Suppose you have worked for more than a year with someone who backs you: takes you onto projects, defends you at meetings, signs off your requests. And suddenly in April they move to the next department, and a new manager arrives with people of their own. Nothing dramatic has happened, nobody fired you. But the support has gone.
That is the working texture of 子未害 (zǐ wèi hài, the Rat–Goat harm) for the Rat in 2027. The year is called 丁未, between the Rat's branch 子 and the year's branch 未 lies a 害 (hài, "harm"), and it works through allies leaving, people being pulled away, role boundaries blurring. So a conversation about the Rat's career this year is a conversation about the people around you, not about job titles.

1 Why 害 strikes at working alliances
The Rat 子 has a natural ally, the Ox 丑 (子丑合, Six Harmony). The year's branch 未 stands opposite the Ox and clashes with it (丑未沖). The classical explanation of 害: the branch that "knocks out" an ally also harms the partner branch. As a result the Rat is left without its usual support, and support at work means a manager, a mentor, a team, reliable contractors.
Unlike a head-on clash, 沖 (chōng), a harm creates no conflict. Nobody is against you. People are simply busy, their priorities have shifted, and the arrangements that depended on personal relationships have weakened. For an office this is the most treacherous variant, because there is nothing to contest: there is nothing to take issue with.
From here comes the first practical rule of the year. Do not hang your career on one person. If your growth depends on one patron or one key client, 2027 is a reason to widen the circle.
And at once a reservation about the strength of the chart. A sturdy Day Master takes the departure of allies as a reason to build new ties: unpleasant, but manageable. The exact month boundaries: 壬寅 from February 4, 癸卯 from March 6, 甲辰 from April 5, 乙巳 from May 6, 丙午 from June 6, 丁未 from July 7, 戊申 from August 8, 己酉 from September 8, 庚戌 from October 8, 辛亥 from November 7, 壬子 from December 7, 癸丑 from January 6, 2028 (give or take a day).
A working principle follows from this picture: important approvals, a move to a new team and serious negotiations are better scheduled for April and for August through November, while in June–July you finish what you started and avoid launching big schemes. The general rule for the whole year is simple: in calm months, actions and agreements; in sharp ones (June–July), completion of what is under way and observation. The Rat is strong because it can wait and see the whole layout; in 2027 that ability is worth more than speed.
3 The month of March: 子卯刑 and "no manners"
A separate word about March, because many Rats run into it unexpectedly. The punishment 子卯刑 (zǐ mǎo xíng) is called in the classics 無禮之刑 (wú lǐ zhī xíng), "the punishment without courtesy," or the rude punishment. It is about tone, not substance: words said with irritation; a missed "thank you"; a joke that stung; a reply without a greeting. In work correspondence these look like trifles, but they are exactly what surfaces later in evaluations.
The practice is simple. In March correspondence, reread the email before sending; on calls, do not answer a provocation at once; in assessments of colleagues, thank people explicitly. This is not magic but politeness, which you will have to keep up consciously this month.

4 The Rat's stars at work: 驛馬, 將星, 華蓋
In the 申子辰 group, to which the Rat belongs, three stars work that matter for a career.

Let me add to what was said about the Officer and Killings. If the year arrives as Eating God or Hurting Officer (Day Master 乙 or 甲), 2027 is good for showing your craft and reaching a new audience, but harder with the bosses: Hurting Officer sits badly with a rigid hierarchy. And if 丁 becomes Wealth for you (壬 or 癸 through 丁, or 甲 and 乙 through the hidden 己), your career this year is more tightly tied to money and a concrete result than to status. The question "leave or not" comes up for many Rats in a 子未害 year. A ready answer is impossible, but a line of reasoning can be offered.
- The reason for leaving. If you are leaving because your patron has left and you like the work, wait two or three months: a new ally often appears. If you have long wanted to change field, the year gives a push.
- The timing. Windows are February (Traveling Horse), April, and August through November. June and July are awkward for a move: emotions outweigh arguments.
- The terms. In a harm year the employer's verbal promises have to be turned into written ones: salary, probation period, area of responsibility. This is the most sensitive point.
- A reserve ally. Before leaving, keep in touch with at least two people from your former field. If the new job turns out not to be right, returning will be easier.

7 Three working roles: employee, manager, self-employed
The employee. Watch your position on the "map of influence." Who supports you, who makes decisions, who can replace you. Make a habit of recording results: figures, feedback, emails of thanks. In a harm year this is your "portfolio of allies."
The manager. Your risk zone is subordinates who leave or get "pulled away" by neighbouring departments. Give more personal attention to key people, set transparent goals and clear areas of responsibility. The General Star and the month of December 壬子 are a good time for strong personnel decisions.
The self-employed and the entrepreneur. The client base is unstable: some clients leave, some arrive. Spread income across several sources, build in prepayment and do not base the whole plan on one large order.
A common thread for all three roles: in 2027 the winner is not the one with the most connections but the one whose connections do not converge on a single point. One boss, one client, one contractor is a single point of failure, and that is exactly where 害 strikes. Two or three reliable contacts in each important zone turn a year of risks into a year of opportunities.
8 Salary, promotion, negotiations: how to behave in a harm year
The most frequent mistake of Rats on this subject is to rely on the atmosphere. The manager smiles, says "we value you," mentions a salary review "after the quarter." In an ordinary year such a signal is enough to prepare. In a 子未害 year it guarantees nothing: in a quarter the manager may be in another department, and the new one will not know about the promises.
So do three simple things. First: after any verbal talk about money or position, send a short email with a summary, along the lines of "glad we discussed such-and-such review in such-and-such month." Second: collect results in figures so that any new manager can see your work without knowing you personally. Third: raise the subject of promotion in "supportive" months, that is, in April, August or November, not in the middle of the June bustle.
If you are joining a new company, clarify not only the salary but the people: whom you report to, who your direct manager is, how long they have been in the post. The ally you receive at the start shapes the year more strongly than the pay itself.
9 Fields where the Rat's Water feels more confident
The branch 子 is Water, and Water in BaZi is tied to the movement of information, to connections, adaptability and the knack of getting through where there is no straight road. This is not a verdict on a profession, but a hint about working style. Rats are usually comfortable where one has to find one's bearings fast: analytics, sales, communications, logistics, mediation, research. In a harm year the same qualities become insurance: a person who knows many people and keeps several channels depends less on one patron.
The flip side is fragmentation. When Water spreads across several tasks at once, the result is left without "banks." So it helps to choose two or three main lines for the year and consciously decline the rest. 10 The year's mistakes
Underestimating "quiet" signals. When conversations with the manager get shorter and invitations to projects rarer, that is a reason to discuss your role, not to wait.
Sorting out relationships in June. The month of 子午沖 is good for action but not for looking for the guilty.
Leaning on a single patron. If they leave, your position collapses too.
A harsh tone in March. 子卯刑 makes sharpness more noticeable than you expect.
Waiting for the market to "decide for you." The year favours active, clearly formulated steps; passivity will show up as "somehow I was passed over."
Nursing a grudge against the ally who "left." A manager who moved to another department rarely did so against you. In a harm year, taking offence at such departures means losing a potentially useful contact. It is better to preserve the relationship: today's "departed" patron may open a door in a new place tomorrow.
In short: in 2027 the Rat does well to hope less that "it will sort itself out" and to build alliances more deliberately.
