Among the twelve "special stars" of classical BaZi, there is one that makes a modern master picture an airport, a wheeled suitcase, and a departures board. This is Yi Ma — "the Travelling Horse" (驛馬, yì mǎ — "travelling horse"), known in English-language literature as the Travelling Horse or the Postal Horse. The star of motion, relocation, long journeys, and the inability to sit still.
If Jiangxing focuses on hierarchy and authority, Huagai on silence and spirit, and Xue Ren on the blade and strength, then Yi Ma directs all its energy toward one thing: never standing still. Its carriers are perpetual passengers, transporters, diplomats, emigrants, foreign correspondents, digital nomads, sailors, long-haul truckers, pilots. Any life in which motion matters more than any single point.
1 What the Yi Ma star is
The character 驛 (yì) meant, in ancient China, a "postal relay station" — a place where imperial mail couriers changed horses while delivering dispatches across the whole empire. 馬 (mǎ) means "horse." Together — "the postal horse," "the horse from the relay station." Literally, a horse that doesn't graze in one field, but constantly gallops from city to city, carrying letters and orders.
The image is remarkably precise. The Yi Ma carrier is "the postal horse of destiny." They carry themselves between cities, countries, cultures, professions, relationships. They turn up where others don't. They meet people the locals will never encounter. Their home is a suitcase or, in the modern version, a backpack-worn-as-office.
In the classic Ziping (子平) school, each element has a triad of three branches: birth → flourishing → completion. Yi Ma is not that opening (生, birth) branch itself — it is the branch that clashes (沖) with the triad’s opening branch, the jolt that sets the whole triad in motion. It's the collision, not the origin.
In its pure form, Yi Ma is linked to:
- long journeys and emigration — carriers often live somewhere other than where they were born;
- moves and changing cities — over a lifetime they change residence 3, 5, even 10 times;
- international work — import-export, diplomacy, translation, tourism;
- changing professions and partners — restlessness shows up not only geographically, but in social ties too;
- transport and logistics — literal work with movement;
- remote work — the modern digital form of the "travelling horse."
2 How Yi Ma is calculated
Yi Ma is determined by the earthly branch of the birth year or day. The logic: take your branch, find its triad, then find the triad's opening (生, birth) branch — the branch that clashes (沖) with it is Yi Ma. Not to be confused with the triad's own middle branch, which is a different star, Jiangxing (將星).
| If your year/day branch is: | The Yi Ma star: | Logic |
|---|---|---|
| 巳 Si · 酉 You · 丑 Chou (Metal) | 亥 Hai (Pig) | Clashes with the opening branch (巳 Si) |
| 申 Shen · 子 Zi · 辰 Chen (Water) | 寅 Yin (Tiger) | Clashes with the opening branch (申 Shen) |
| 亥 Hai · 卯 Mao · 未 Wei (Wood) | 巳 Si (Snake) | Clashes with the opening branch (亥 Hai) |
| 寅 Yin · 午 Wu · 戌 Xu (Fire) | 申 Shen (Monkey) | Clashes with the opening branch (寅 Yin) |
Notice: Yi Ma is always one of the four "moving" branches: Hai, Yin, Si, Shen. These branches correspond to the four seasonal transitions in the Chinese calendar: the Pig, the start of winter; the Tiger, the start of spring; the Snake, the start of summer; the Monkey, the start of autumn. Each of them is a branch of change, transition, beginning. They naturally carry the energy of motion.
A feature: Yi Ma always "clashes" with the opening branch
Unlike Jiangxing (將星), which rests at the triad’s own middle branch, Yi Ma is always the branch that clashes (沖, chōng) with the triad's opening (生) branch — the point where the element is born. This clash is the star's "engine." The tension between the quiet beginning and the branch that collides with it is precisely what pushes the carrier into motion their entire life.
3 Yi Ma's position in the pillars
The same star reveals itself differently depending on which pillar it sits in.
Yi Ma in the year means travel is woven into the family history. These are often the children of diplomats, military personnel, sailors, scientists on assignment. The family moves with the child, or the child leaves early (ages 5-10) for another city to study. A suitcase habit from childhood.
Yi Ma in the month ties the career to motion. This is "I travel for work" — an export manager, a foreign correspondent, a regional company representative, a traveling coach, a touring performer. The office desk sits empty, because the carrier is there five days a year.
Yi Ma in the day is the most powerful position. The star sits "right inside the person." These are people who physically cannot stay in one place for long. After 2-3 years in any city, things start feeling "tight." A year or two, and they're back on the road. Marriages are often cross-cultural, since partners are met in different countries too.
Yi Ma in the hour means travel in the second half of life. Such people often start traveling actively after 50 — "time to see the world" arrives. Sometimes, late-life emigration, moving abroad to be with children, a long journey as a "new chapter" of life. Their children often emigrate too.
4 Positive expressions of Yi Ma
When the star finds a noble use, it grants its carrier a whole range of qualities unavailable to "settled" people.
The gifts of the Travelling Horse
"A courier between worlds"
The chief function of a Yi Ma carrier is to be a bridge between different "worlds." Between countries, cultures, industries, generations. They bring ideas from Japan to Europe, technology from Silicon Valley to Asia, Eastern practices to Western clinics. Without them, civilization would be fragmented and provincial.
That's why, in the age of globalization, Yi Ma is one of the most in-demand stars. What in feudal China was "the oddity of the postal courier" has, in the 21st century, become "the career of a successful internationalist." The digital economy is native ground for Yi Ma carriers.
5 The dark side of Yi Ma
Constant motion has a price. And if the star hasn't "found itself a job," its energy turns into a source of chronic problems.
The dangers of the road
- The inability to put down roots. After two or three years, any city starts feeling "stifling." Friendships don't have time to deepen. Neither does love. The carrier changes city, and their social circle resets to zero.
- Superficial relationships. When the people around you constantly change, emotional investment drops. "Why get attached if I'm leaving in a year." This is a defense mechanism — but it also creates loneliness.
- Difficulties with children. Constant relocation is hard on children: changing schools, losing friends, language barriers. Children of Yi Ma carriers often experience this as trauma.
- Financial instability. Without a fixed point and savings built in one place, it's hard to build a material foundation. Money "leaks" into flights, moves, new furniture in every apartment.
- Emotional burnout from switching contexts. Every move brings dozens of new names, bureaucratic procedures, culture shocks. After 5-10 years of this rhythm, exhaustion sets in.
- Accidents on the road. Especially in activation years (see the section on Da Yun) — a heightened risk of car accidents, problems with planes, trains, ships. The carrier is literally on the road a lot, and the statistics catch up.
- "Fleeing instead of resolving." Any difficulty becomes a reason to leave. A divorce? Leave. A career crisis? Leave. This turns into an avoidance pattern that never lets the problem actually get worked through.
6 Yi Ma's combinations with other stars
The star of motion reveals itself differently depending on which other configurations "sound" alongside it.
Yi Ma + 財 (Wealth Stars)
"A horse carrying money." The most favorable combination. The carrier earns through motion: import-export, trade between cities and countries, international deals. Many successful merchants, past and present, carry exactly this combination. Every move becomes a new source of income.
Yi Ma + 正官 (zhèng guān — "direct officer") (Zheng Guan — Direct Officer)
"A horse in the service of the state." Diplomacy, international representation, work at a foreign ministry, trade missions, assignments from state bodies. The carrier gains legitimacy for their motion through an official mission.
Yi Ma + 印 (Resource Stars)
"The scholar-wanderer." Education in different countries, academic assignments, international research. Carriers are often scholars with a PhD from a foreign university, professors with three affiliations, experts lecturing around the world.
Yi Ma + 七殺 (qī shā — "seven killings") (Qi Sha — Seven Killings)
"The military traveler." Military missions, special forces, peacekeeping operations, security work in conflict zones. Also, foreign correspondents covering military conflicts, humanitarian workers in crisis areas.
Yi Ma + 桃花 (táo huā — "peach blossom") (Tao Hua — Peach Blossom)
"The wanderer of love." Numerous romances in different countries, cross-cultural marriages, frequent partner changes tied to relocations. On one hand, a rich personal life; on the other, difficulty building a stable family.
Yi Ma + 沖 (a clash of branches)
A double chong is "a wheel spinning out of control." The carrier is almost never home: one assignment out of another, one flight out of another. Sometimes, a chain of accidents and instability.
Multiple Yi Ma
If a chart has two or three Yi Ma branches (for example, both Shen and Yin at once), this is a "hyper-wanderer." Life is literally lived in motion: deep-sea sailors, pilots, touring performers, professional emigrants. They often live in several countries at once.

Calculate my chart for free →7 Yi Ma in the Da Yun — the activation of moves
Yi Ma is one of the most "activatable" stars. Its triggers in the Da Yun and the Liu Nian literally predict moves, emigrations, and major relocations.
Activation scenarios
- A luck pillar brings the same branch. For example, your Yi Ma is Shen, and a decade arrives carrying the Shen branch. This is "the decade of the road": a move, emigration, extended business trips, a shift to "on-the-road" work.
- A year brings the same branch. Every "own" year brings concrete movement: a move, a long trip, a new job somewhere else, an extended journey.
- A clash of branches (沖). When the opposite branch arrives (Shen ↔ Yin, Hai ↔ Si), Yi Ma "triggers" sharply. Sudden moves, force-majeure emigrations, emergency trips, sometimes accidents.
- Triad activation. When all three branches of the Yi Ma triad gather in a pillar or year (for example, for a Fire-triad Yi Ma of Shen, Zi and Chen both arrive), this is "the full union of the road": a major life shift tied to geography.
Specific activation years
| Your Yi Ma | Strong years (activation) | Clash (chong) |
|---|---|---|
| 亥 Hai (Pig) | 2031, 2043 | 2025, 2037 (Snake) |
| 寅 Yin (Tiger) | 2034, 2046 | 2028, 2040 (Monkey) |
| 巳 Si (Snake) | 2025, 2037 | 2031, 2043 (Pig) |
| 申 Shen (Monkey) | 2028, 2040 | 2034, 2046 (Tiger) |
Yi Ma activation years typically bring:
- a move to another city or country;
- a shift to "on-the-road" work — business travel, remote work, relocation;
- a long journey, a dream saved up for years;
- emigration, applying for residency or a second citizenship;
- meeting a future partner while traveling (often a cross-cultural marriage);
- studying abroad, an exchange program, an internship;
- buying a car, motorcycle, or boat — a new "horse."
In clash (chong) years, Yi Ma often brings:
- a forced move (for example, losing a job → relocation);
- accidents, travel mishaps, transport problems;
- divorces and breakups tied to geographic separation;
- emergency emigrations due to external circumstances.

9 Archetypes of Yi Ma: famous carriers
The "great explorer" archetype
Image: an explorer who traveled every continent. Marco Polo, Ferdinand Magellan, Jacques Cousteau, Thor Heyerdahl. Their charts hold a strong Yi Ma, activated during years of expedition. Home, for them, is a tent, a ship, a sleeping bag.
The "generational diplomat" archetype
Image: a person who lived their life across ten embassies. The children speak four languages, each holds passports from two countries. The family is a "little UN." This is the composite image of dynastic diplomats.
The "digital nomad" archetype
Image: a developer, 30-40 years old, working from a laptop in Bali, then Lisbon, then Mexico City. Money in crypto, several passports, friends scattered across group chats in every timezone. This is the new, digital type of Yi Ma, appearing en masse after 2020.
The "touring performer" archetype
Image: an opera singer who has played every major stage in the world. Or a jazz musician playing clubs from New York to Tokyo. Life in suitcases, dressing rooms, hotel rooms. This is the classic theatrical Yi Ma.
The "emigrant with a story" archetype
Image: a person born in one country, raised in a second, educated in a third, married in a fourth, running a business in a fifth. Not because of war or poverty, but because "that's how it went." These are the typical international careerists of the 21st century.
The "war-zone correspondent" archetype
Image: a journalist who spent 20 years in war zones — from Bosnia to Syria, from Iraq to Ukraine. Yi Ma + Seven Killings + blade stars. These are the "sharpest" Yi Ma carriers.
10 Practical application: how to work with Yi Ma
A few practical recommendations for those with this star active — or for those close to them.
If your Yi Ma is active
- Don't resist the motion. If you're a carrier, don't try to "settle down" at 25 in one place until retirement. This is an attempt to cheat the star, and it strikes back — with depression, illness, boredom.
- Build a "mobile base." Don't buy a huge house full of furniture in the first year of your career. Learn to live light, so moves stay easy. Digital banking, digital storage, minimalism are your tools.
- Earn "moving money." Remote work, freelancing, a business "on wheels," investments in assets easily transferred between countries. Avoid businesses with heavy infrastructure tied to one place.
- Use your "own" years. When a luck pillar activates your Yi Ma (see the table), this is the best time for major relocations. Use the window, don't miss it.
- Learn languages. Every language is a new country open to you. A Yi Ma carrier with three or four languages is a "citizen of the world" with real freedom.
- Set "anchors of connection." 2-3 close friends you call once a week regardless of where you are. Without this, a Yi Ma carrier drifts into loneliness.
- Take care during activation years. When Yi Ma is "burning," take extra care while driving, flying, in unfamiliar places. Insurance, trusted drivers, tested routes.
- Don't use the road as an escape. Every move should be "toward," not "away from." If you're leaving a problem behind, the problem travels with you in your suitcase.
If your partner or child has Yi Ma
- Don't try to "tie them down." It's pointless. The star is stronger than your efforts. Better to become their "road partner," someone who travels with them.
- Prepare Yi Ma children for a mobile life. Languages, flexibility, the ability to make friends quickly. Don't fear changing schools — for a Yi Ma child, it's less traumatic than it seems.
- Accept that they're "not like everyone else." You can't teach them to "live at home like normal people." They are normal — just different. Their normal is the road.
- Create "home everywhere." Don't tie the meaning of "home" to walls. Home is rituals, relationships, shared traditions that can travel anywhere.

Its carriers are global citizens, cross-cultural bridges, carrying ideas and people between points on the planet. They often pay for this in loneliness and a lack of "roots," but in exchange they get what the settled will never see: an enormous, many-colored, inexhaustible world.
If this star is yours, don't fear the road. Fear missing its call. A travelling horse denied its gallop falls ill. A horse galloping its own path is the freest creature in the world.
