When a BaZi master looks at a chart, they don't see "characters." They see ten archetypal roles — the Ten Gods (十神, Shi Shen), which immediately tell the whole story of a person: where their strength lies, where their money is, who their partner is, what they avoid, what career suits them. This is the densest analytical language in the entire Four Pillars system.
This article is an in-depth breakdown of all ten Gods: what each one means, how to spot it, and why the very same god can be a blessing or a curse depending on the chart's balance.
1 What the "Ten Gods" are
In the BaZi system there is one central element — your Day Master (日主 (rì zhǔ — "the master of the day")), the heavenly stem of your birth day. This is "you." All seven other elements in the chart (three stems + four branches) stand in some relationship to the Day Master. These relationships are what's called the "Ten Gods."
The logic is simple and geometric. Between two elements, five relationships are possible: they are the same, one gives birth to the other, one is born from the other, one controls the other, one is controlled by the other. Each relationship comes in two variants — friendly (the same polarity: Yang-Yang or Yin-Yin) and hostile (opposite polarity: Yang-Yin). That gives 5 × 2 = 10 Gods.
2 The five basic families
The Ten Gods split into five pairs. Each pair is one "family," but with two "faces": friendly and hostile.

This table already shows the whole logic: the friendly god is support, a soft influence, a resource that comes with ease. The hostile god is the same type of energy, but carries tension, struggle, something to overcome. Hostile doesn't mean "bad": it's often precisely this god that produces leaders, rebels, breakthroughs.
Next comes each of the ten gods individually, with its own character, careers, and warnings.
3 Bi Jian 比肩 — "Shoulder to Shoulder"
Archetype: a brother, sister, comrade, kindred spirit. The one who stands beside you and lifts you up.
What it gives: self-confidence, willpower, the ability to work for a long time, physical endurance, a readiness to fight for your own interests. Bi Jian strengthens the Day Master — the chart becomes sturdier, the person more resistant to pressure.
The dark side: with an excess of Bi Jian, a person grows stubborn, stops listening to others, loses money (Bi Jian "eats" Wealth, see below). May be a loner, unable to work within a team that has a hierarchy.
Careers: sport, martial arts, independent practice, craft, physically demanding work, freelancing.
4 Jie Cai 劫财 — "Rob Wealth"
Archetype: a half-sibling, a rival, a false friend who reaches for the same resources. In relationships, a rival for the partner.
What it gives: a fighter's character, charisma, the ability to lead crowds, strength in competition. Many politicians, entrepreneurs, and athletes have a strong Jie Cai.
The dark side: envy, conflict with those close to you, losing money through partners and associates, jealousy, family splits. If Jie Cai is uncontrolled, the person keeps losing what they earned.
A danger sign: Jie Cai + Yang Ren 羊刃 (yáng rèn — "ram's blade") (a special "blade-sword" in the chart) = a very intense energy that, under poor luck pillars, can lead to serious losses, conflict, accidents.
Careers: business with partners (with caution!), negotiation, politics, sport, sales, the military.
5 Shi Shen 食神 — "The Eating God"
Archetype: a child, a student, the fruit of your labor. Creative self-expression without aggression.
What it gives: talent, creativity, a sense of humor, a love of life, a gastronomic palate, the ability to produce good things and share them. This is the god of artists, chefs, actors, writers, singers.
Psychologically: a Shi Shen person is someone who feels good in life. They know how to enjoy themselves, appreciate beauty, are non-aggressive, seek harmony. Often "the life of the party."
The dark side: in excess — laziness, hedonism, weight gain, a loss of ambition, dependence on pleasure. Too much Shi Shen means "too much delicious food."
Careers: the arts, cooking, music, literature, psychology, hospitality, design, any creative profession.
6 Shang Guan 伤官 — "The Hurting Officer"
Archetype: a genius, an inventor, a revolutionary, a scandal-prone artist. Someone who doesn't fit into the system, but creates something new.
What it gives: extraordinary talent, charisma, the ability to tear down the outdated, oratory skill, wit, unconventional thinking. Many great scientists, philosophers, and artists have a strong Shang Guan.
Psychologically: Shang Guan cannot stand bosses or rules. It's smarter than those around it, and often knows it. Can be sharp, may wound with words, cannot bear being underestimated.
The dark side: conflicts with authority, legal trouble, wrecking one's own career through bluntness, scandal, reputational loss. The classic formula: "Shang Guan wounds Zheng Guan" — the rebel destroys their own position.
The rescue: Shang Guan needs to be "tamed" through Wealth (Cai) — directing the talent into earning money and creative production, rather than fighting the system for its own sake.
Careers: science, research, journalism, advertising, IT, invention, provocative art, political analysis.
7 Zheng Cai 正财 — "Direct Wealth"
Archetype: a salary, real estate, a lawful wife (for a man), a stable business. Long-term, reliable resources.
What it gives: financial stability, the capacity for long-term planning, thrift, reliability in business. Zheng Cai is "the honest wage."
Psychologically: a person with a strong Zheng Cai is a homebody, a family person, a responsible employee, a pragmatist. Doesn't like risk, likes predictability.
The dark side: greed, stinginess, a fear of change, a dull life, no sense of excitement. With a weak Day Master, Zheng Cai becomes a heavy load — "the money crushes."
For a man: Zheng Cai in the chart is the lawful wife. Where it sits, and how strong it is, says a great deal about the marriage.
Careers: finance, accounting, banking, real estate, leasing, civil service, trading in stable goods.
8 Pian Cai 偏财 — "Indirect Wealth"
Archetype: business, investment, speculation, winnings, inheritance, romantic adventures (for a man).
What it gives: an entrepreneurial spirit, a taste for risk, luck at gambling, generosity (Pian Cai spends easily and earns easily), wide connections, an easy way with money.
Psychologically: a person with Pian Cai is a gambler, an adventurer, the life of the party. They don't count pennies, they think in big deals. Often wealthy, but can also go broke and rise again.
The dark side: losing money through gambling, affairs, risk, an inability to save. Pian Cai is drawn to pleasure and often creates hidden relationships.
For a man: Pian Cai often symbolizes "outside women" — flirtation, mistresses, affairs outside the marriage. A strong Pian Cai with a weak Zheng Cai equals an unstable marriage.
Careers: entrepreneurship, investment, trading, show business, advertising, real estate flipping, anything tied to risk and capital.
9 Zheng Guan 正官 — "Direct Authority"
10 Qi Sha 七杀 — "Seven Killings"
Archetype: an enemy, a tyrant, a crisis, extreme pressure, a lover with no commitment (for a woman). A force that either cripples, or hardens.
What it gives: an iron will, a commander's charisma, the ability to act under extreme conditions, courage, an extraordinary quality. Many generals, surgeons, and empire founders have a strong Qi Sha.
Psychologically: a Qi Sha person lives "on the edge." They aren't afraid of pain, aren't afraid of conflict, push straight through. In ordinary life, such a person is hard to fit into the rules.
The dark side: injury, illness, violence, an early death under a poor balance. Uncontrolled Qi Sha is an unmanageable destructive force, directed at oneself or at others.
The key formula: Qi Sha must be "tamed" — either through Shi Shen (creative expression), or through Resource (Yin — protection). Tamed Qi Sha equals a great leader. Untamed equals tragedy.
Careers: the military, security forces, surgery, law, high-performance sport, crisis management, emergency medicine.
11 Zheng Yin 正印 — "Direct Resource"
Archetype: a mother, a teacher, a mentor, a diploma, an academic title, real estate, documents. Protection and legitimization.
What it gives: the capacity to learn, an academic mind, moral authority, the reputation of a sage, a love of tradition, care for others, immunity (literally — Yin grants health and longevity).
Psychologically: a person with a strong Zheng Yin is a teacher, a sage, a librarian of the soul. They accumulate knowledge, protect those close to them, value culture and history.
The dark side: in excess — passivity, dependence on parents, "the eternal student," indecisiveness, a reluctance to earn (Yin "smothers" Wealth). Too much protection means an inability to live independently.
Careers: education, science, medicine, law, library and archival work, spiritual practice, psychology, literary work.
12 Pian Yin 偏印 — "Indirect Resource" (Xiao Shen)
Archetype: a stepmother, a stepfather, a mystical mentor, a narrow specialist, an esotericist, a psychoanalyst. Knowledge acquired "by an indirect route."
What it gives: a unique mind, an aptitude for narrow, unconventional disciplines (metaphysics, astrology, programming, a narrow medical specialty), intuition, the ability to sense the hidden, a talent for research.
Psychologically: a Pian Yin person is often strange, withdrawn, "not of this world." Deep, but slow to connect with people. Loves rare books, esotericism, impractical knowledge.
The dark side: Pian Yin is also called Xiao Shen (枭神, "the Owl God") — "the devourer of Shi Shen." If a chart has both Shi Shen (the creative god) and Pian Yin, the latter can destroy the creative expression, leading to depression, eating disorders, a loss of income.
Careers: metaphysics, esotericism, narrow science, programming, psychoanalysis, spiritual practice, research work in complex fields.
13 How to read a chart through the 10 gods
When a master looks at a finished chart, they don't count characters. They immediately see which of the 10 Gods in the chart are strong, which are absent, which conflict, which support each other. This gives an instant "portrait" of the personality and destiny.
The algorithm for reading a chart through the 10 gods:
- Step 1. Determine the Day Master's strength (strong or weak, by season, roots, support).
- Step 2. Find all 10 gods in the chart — on the stems, in the visible branches, in the hidden branches.
- Step 3. Determine the chief god (Yong Shen, 用神 (yòng shén — "useful god")) — the one useful for the balance of the whole chart.
- Step 4. Determine the divine enemy (Ji Shen, 忌神) — the one that gets in the way.
- Step 5. Look at the luck pillars (Da Yun): which decades bring the useful gods, which bring the hostile ones.
This scheme is the foundation of all BaZi analysis in the Ziping school. If you master reading through the 10 gods, you'll have mastered 70% of the whole system.
14 Combinations of gods — where great destinies are born
Individual gods give a rough portrait. The real power of BaZi analysis lies in combinations. A few classic ones:

Knowing your 10 gods, you can:
- Choose a career. If Zheng Guan dominates your chart, go corporate, not freelance. If it's Shang Guan, go creative, not bureaucratic.
- Understand your relationships. Where Zheng Cai (for a man) or Zheng Guan (for a woman) sits in the chart, how strong it is, whether there's conflict — this is a basic forecast for married life.
- Determine your financial style. Zheng Cai means steady income, save it. Pian Cai means business and risk, don't sit in an office.
- Find your vulnerable spot. The gods that are hostile in the chart (for example, Qi Sha with no Shi Shen to tame it) are risk zones you need to be especially careful about during certain luck pillars.
- Read your yearly forecast. Every year activates a specific god. A Jia Shen year for a Bing Day Master is a strong Pian Yin + Pian Cai rolled into one, and that will be a very particular year for creativity and finances.
