If 七殺 (Seven Killings) is the commander on the battlefield, 正官 (Zheng Guan) is the chief judge in the courtroom. Both control — but in entirely different ways. 正官 acts within the bounds of law, tradition, and the social contract. It doesn't break systems — it embodies and protects them. Classic texts call 正官 貴人 (guì rén) — "a noble person," because this very star governs reputation, social status, and the capacity to hold high office.
The name "Direct" is key here. In the Ten Gods system, "direct" (正) always means matched, predictable, working by the rules. As opposed to "improper" (偏) — indirect, unpredictable, breaking norms. 正官 controls your Day Master — but it's from "your own camp," and its control is felt as fair.
1 The mechanics: how 正官 is calculated
正官 is the element that "controls" (克) your Day Master, while carrying the opposite polarity (Yin controls Yang, or Yang controls Yin).
| Day Master | 正官 | 七殺 (for comparison) |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia (Yang Wood) | 辛 Xin (Yin Metal) | 庚 Geng (Yang Metal) |
| 乙 Yi (Yin Wood) | 庚 Geng (Yang Metal) | 辛 Xin (Yin Metal) |
| 丙 Bing (Yang Fire) | 癸 Gui (Yin Water) | 壬 Ren (Yang Water) |
| 丁 Ding (Yin Fire) | 壬 Ren (Yang Water) | 癸 Gui (Yin Water) |
| 戊 Wu (Yang Earth) | 乙 Yi (Yin Wood) | 甲 Jia (Yang Wood) |
| 己 Ji (Yin Earth) | 甲 Jia (Yang Wood) | 乙 Yi (Yin Wood) |
| 庚 Geng (Yang Metal) | 丁 Ding (Yin Fire) | 丙 Bing (Yang Fire) |
| 辛 Xin (Yin Metal) | 丙 Bing (Yang Fire) | 丁 Ding (Yin Fire) |
| 壬 Ren (Yang Water) | 己 Ji (Yin Earth) | 戊 Wu (Yang Earth) |
| 癸 Gui (Yin Water) | 戊 Wu (Yang Earth) | 己 Ji (Yin Earth) |
2 正官 vs 七殺: what the difference is
3 The 正官 archetype: who these people are
Carriers of a strong, clean 正官 are the people others call "reliable." You can count on them. They keep their promises, respect hierarchy, build a reputation over years. This doesn't mean they're boring — it just means their word carries weight.
- 🏛️ Statesmen and civil servants — native ground for 正官;
- ⚖️ Lawyers, judges, notaries — work with law and fairness;
- 🏥 Chief physicians, deans, directors — responsible management;
- 📊 Corporate executives — systemic thinking, authority;
- 🎓 Academics, professors — especially when 正官 combines with 正印.
4 正官 in a career
正官 is "the promotion star." Periods when your decade or year carries the 正官 sign are times of career growth, gaining positions, recognition from superiors. If your chart's 正官 is strong and clean (not attacked, not tied up in a combination), such periods bring a genuine career leap.
5 正官 and relationships
For women: the husband through 正官
In the traditional BaZi system, for a woman, 正官 is the star of the lawful husband. An official relationship, a registered marriage, public recognition of the partnership — all of this runs through 正官. If a woman has a strong, untouched 正官, she typically builds an official, stable relationship. The partner is a serious, responsible, socially established person.
If 正官 is attacked or weakened, the relationship can be unstable, the husband unreliable or socially unsettled. Too many signs of 正官 and 七殺 together mean competition among "husbands" (frequent partner changes, or parallel relationships).
For men: reputation and social standing
For a man, 正官 is his reputation in society, his social status. A strong 正官 means people respect him and trust him with leadership roles. A weak 正官 means difficulty getting recognized, trouble with superiors or authorities.
6 When 正官 is weak or attacked
Weakness in the chart's 正官, or an attack on it during the year pillars, shows up as:
- Trouble with the law, authorities, tax agencies — despite acting in good faith;
- Difficulty getting a position, even with the right competencies;
- Reputational blows — false accusations, gossip, distrust;
- Job loss or a demotion during "官杀混杂" periods (a mixing of 正官 and 七殺);
- For women, trouble in a marriage or with an official partner.
7 正官 and health
As a control principle, 正官 in health relates to the organs and functions that "govern" the body: the nervous system, the spine, immunity (distinguishing "self" from "other"). A weakened 正官 in the chart can point to reduced immunity, spinal issues, disorders of nervous regulation.
8 Activation in the Da Yun: a time of career growth
A 正官 decade — if your Yong Shen favors it — is one of the best career periods of your life. Recognition, promotions, new positions of responsibility. Especially if your natal chart's 正官 is clean and strong.
If 正官 isn't your Yong Shen (for example, for a weak Day Master that needs support, not control), such a decade can feel oppressive: responsibility grows, but the resource isn't there to match it.
