The Right Work for Each

The single most common question people bring to a BaZi Master: "What should I do with my life?" And the most common answer from bad fortune-telling is something like "you have strong Wood, so do something wood-related — forestry, furniture, paper." That's not the canon. The real canon of the classical Ziping school reads profession through the 10 Gods (十神) and through your Yong Shen (用神 (yòng shén — "Useful God")), the chart's favorable element. This article is a complete guide: which chart structure produces which kind of professional.

1 The principle: your best work = your Useful God

Yong Shen (用神) is the "Useful God," the element a chart reaches toward the way a plant reaches for light. Finding your Yong Shen means finding the axis of your life. A profession that engages your Yong Shen gives you three things at once: financial growth, enjoyment of the work, and health.

Yong Shen is determined by the chart's structure: if the Day Master is weak, the chart needs elements that strengthen it (Friend, Resource). If it's strong, the chart needs elements that "release" the excess energy (Wealth, Officer, Eating God). If the chart has a special structure (Following Wealth, Following Officer, and so on), the Yong Shen can be something else entirely.

The 10 Gods themselves don't split into "good" and "bad." Every god, in the right context, is favorable. But the dominant god of a chart — the one most clearly expressed through the Month pillar or rooted in the branches — shapes your professional archetype. Let's go through them one by one.

2 Direct Officer, 正官 (zhèng guān — "Direct Officer") — corporations, bureaucracy, civil service

The Direct Officer is "proper authority." In a man's chart, it's discipline and position; in a woman's chart, it's her husband. Archetypally, the Direct Officer is the classic climber within a hierarchy: someone who understands the rules, knows how to work within a system, and is willing to serve a corporation or the state.

Ideal professions

• Civil service. Ministries, departments, regulators. A Direct-Officer person in a ministry rises through the ranks logically and predictably.
• Law. Especially civil and corporate law. Not criminal defense (that's Seven Killings), but arbitration, notarial work, corporate counsel.
• Corporate management. Top positions at major companies, banks, insurers.
• Audit and compliance. The Big Four, internal control, anti-fraud.
• Diplomacy. Foreign ministries, international organizations, negotiating roles.
• Educational administration. A university president, a school principal, an education official.

How to spot "your" Direct Officer

A Direct-Officer chart usually has a visible Officer in the Month or Hour stem; a Resource nourishing the Day Master; and a clean structure without excess Hurting Officer (Hurting Officer "wounds" Officer). The Day Master is usually medium-strong to strong — otherwise the weight of the Direct Officer breaks it.

3 Seven Killings, 七殺 (qī shā — "Seven Killings") — the military, law enforcement, extreme professions

Seven Killings, "the seven killings," is the dark twin of the Direct Officer. The same controlling element, but of the same polarity as the Day Master, so it attacks harshly, without rules. It's the star of the warrior, the fighter, the crisis manager.

Ideal professions

• The armed forces and special forces. The military, intelligence services, special operations. Seven Killings gives the ability to act in extreme conditions.
• Surgery and emergency medicine. Especially combat surgery, ambulance work, trauma care.
• Criminal defense and prosecution. High-profile cases, fighting organized crime.
• Crisis management. Turnaround managers, bankruptcy, restructuring.
• Combat sports. MMA, boxing, weightlifting. Coaches and elite-level athletes.
• Startups and venture capital. Paradoxically, the same "throw yourself into the unknown" qualities work in high-risk business too.
• Controlled hazardous industries. Nuclear power, oil and gas, metallurgy.

When Seven Killings "helps," and when it "kills"

If the Day Master is strong and the chart has an Eating God (the star of self-expression that controls Seven Killings), Seven Killings turns from a threat into a tool. This is the formula 食神 (shí shén — "Eating God")制殺 — "the Eating God controls Seven Killings," the classic chart of a general, a commander, a leader in a dangerous field. But if the Day Master is weak and Seven Killings goes uncontrolled, it's the chart of an accident, an early death, prison.

4 Direct and Indirect Resource, 正印 (zhèng yìn — "Direct Resource")/偏印 (piān yìn — "Indirect Resource") — science, education

Resource (印) is the source that nourishes the Day Master. In life, this is your parents (especially your mother), teachers, mentors, knowledge, academia. A Resource chart belongs to the scholar, the teacher, the researcher.

Direct Resource — an academic career

Direct Resource is the "proper" Resource, the classic academic structure. Professions:

• University professor, research fellow.
• Researcher at an R&D lab, pharma, biotech.
• Archivist, librarian, museum curator.
• Man of letters, academic writer, translator of the classics.
• Psychotherapist and psychoanalyst (slow, deep inquiry).
• Clergy, theologian, philosopher.

Indirect Resource — unconventional knowledge

Indirect Resource is the "sideways" Resource, its dark twin. It's tied to esoteric, unconventional, hidden knowledge:

• Astrology, metaphysics, BaZi (yes, the typical BaZi Master has a strong Indirect Resource).
• Alternative medicine, TCM, acupuncture.
• Cryptography, encryption, cybersecurity.
• Investigative journalism, documentary filmmaking.
• Intelligence services and analysis.
• Archaeology, anthropology, under-studied disciplines.

5 Eating God, 食神 — the arts, hospitality

The Eating God is the star of pleasure, expression, and giving. In a chart, this means enjoying life + the ability to create products: dishes, texts, paintings, music, services. It's the "pleasantest" of the ten gods: wherever the Eating God is, there's taste, aesthetics, a warm atmosphere.

Ideal professions

• Fine dining and the restaurant business. Chefs at Michelin-starred restaurants, pastry chefs, sommeliers.
• Hospitality and service. Hotels, spas, boutiques. Creating atmosphere.
• Literature and poetry. Novelists, poets, essayists — not columnists (that's Hurting Officer).
• Music. Composers, performers of classical and folk music.
• Decorative arts. Painters, illustrators, ceramicists, jewelers.
• Psychology and coaching. Supportive, nurturing work with people.
• Yoga, wellness, meditative practice. Teachers of tradition.
• Premium-segment agriculture. Winemaking, cheesemaking, olive oil.

6 Hurting Officer, 傷官 (shāng guān — "Hurting Officer") — creativity, IT, invention

The Hurting Officer, "the one who wounds the officer," is anti-authority, a rebel, an innovator. This star "releases" the Day Master's energy into the world, but through provocation, revolution, breaking the rules. In a chart, the Hurting Officer is the lone genius, the inventor, the rebel.

Ideal professions

• IT and programming. Especially the inventive side: architects, technology founders, R&D developers.
• Design. Industrial design, UX/UI, next-generation graphic design.
• Creative advertising and marketing. Creative directors, copywriters, creators.
• Invention and patents. The Hurting Officer "dreams up what didn't exist before."
• Plastic and reconstructive surgery. Where unconventional technique and artistic vision are needed.
• Showbiz and directing. Film directors, producers, performers.
• Journalism. Especially columns, criticism, investigations.
• Startups. A Hurting-Officer founder builds a product that disrupts the market.

The danger of the Hurting Officer

The Hurting Officer "wounds" the Officer (the star of position and order). In practical terms, this means: a Hurting-Officer person struggles to work for a boss. They criticize, break things, clash. If they haven't founded their own venture, they become "the talented failure" — everyone sees their genius, but no one can work with them.

7 Wealth, 財 — finance, business, trade

The wealth star, as a professional archetype, is the financier, the entrepreneur, the trader. We covered Wealth in detail in the article "Wealth in BaZi"; here, let's focus on the professional angle.

Direct Wealth — corporate finance

• CFO, chief accountant, controller.
• Banker, including investment banking.
• Auditor, appraiser, actuary.
• Tax consultant.
• Managed real estate (REITs, funds).

Indirect Wealth — trading and deals

• An exchange trader, especially in derivatives, FX.
• A real-estate broker, especially in luxury properties.
• An auctioneer, art dealer, antiques dealer.
• A venture investor, an angel investor.
• A serial entrepreneur.
• Import-export, international trade.

8 Rob Wealth and Friend, 劫財 (jié cái — "wealth robber")/比肩 (bǐ jiān — "shoulder to shoulder") — sport, martial arts, politics

These two stars are twins of the Day Master, an "equal shoulder" and a "wealth robber." In a negative light, they're dangerous (as described in the Wealth article), but in the right structure, they give strength, competitiveness, team spirit.

Ideal professions

• Professional sport. Especially team sports and martial arts. Wherever there's rivalry, the Friend shines.
• Politics and social movements. A party leader gathers "equals," builds a coalition.
• Activism, unions, social movements. Defending collective interests.
• Coaching and fitness. Personal trainers, instructors.
• Military service in team formations. Where the shared fighting spirit of comrades matters.
• Co-entrepreneurship. Partnerships, cooperatives, guilds.
• Advocacy law. Where aggressively defending a client is needed.

9 Combinations that mean wealth

Individual stars matter, but real financial destinies are born from combinations. Here are eight classic wealth combinations from the Ziping canon.

食神生財 (Eating God generates Wealth)

The most elegant structure. Creativity produces a product, the product brings money. Archetype: a successful restaurant chef, a brand entrepreneur, a winery owner. Money feels like the "fruit" of the work, without any violence to oneself.

傷官生財 (Hurting Officer generates Wealth)

A brilliant idea turns into a product. Archetype: a startup founder, a patent-holding inventor, a chief designer. Money arrives in waves — a patent, an IPO, a company sale.

財官印三全 (Wealth, Officer, and Resource — all three)

The old school's ideal. Educated, holds a position, has money. Archetype: a professor-consultant, a banker-scholar, a lawyer-minister. The most "complete" lives.

食神制殺 (Eating God controls Seven Killings)

A leader in a dangerous field. Archetype: a hospital's chief surgeon, a general, the owner of a metallurgical plant. The ability to manage threats.

傷官配印 (Hurting Officer paired with Resource)

A genius with the discipline of knowledge. Archetype: an innovating scholar, an inventor-engineer, a physician-researcher. Creates breakthroughs from within an academic system.

正官生印 (Direct Officer generates Resource)

An official with degrees. Archetype: a university president, a minister of education, a chief justice. Power through knowledge.

從財格 (Following Wealth)

A special structure: the Day Master is weak, and the whole chart is Wealth. The Day Master "surrenders" and follows the wealth. Archetype: the wife of a major businessman, a prospector, a professional gambler, a style icon.

從殺格 (Following the Killer)

A special structure: the Day Master is weak, and the whole chart is Seven Killings. Archetype: an army commander, an extreme athlete, a revolutionary leader.

10 Combinations that mean poverty

And unfortunately, there are structures where money consistently doesn't stick. Not "no chance" — but they require enormous work on oneself.

身弱財旺 (A weak body, thriving Wealth)

There's plenty of money around, but it can't be held onto. Debt, loans, bankruptcy. The fix: strengthen the Day Master through education, health, environment. Don't take on major financial responsibilities before strengthening.

傷官見官 (Hurting Officer meets Officer)

The star of rebellion against the star of authority. Constant conflicts with superiors, legal trouble, litigation. Without a special correction (Wealth in between), a career breaks every 5-7 years.

劫財奪財 (Rob Wealth seizes Wealth)

Money leaves through the people close to you. Partners deceive, friends borrow and don't repay, relatives drag you into schemes. The fix: keep distance in financial matters with those close to you.

印多身旺 (Excess Resource, a strong Day Master, no Wealth and no Hurting Officer)

The eternal student. Degrees, no work. Knowledge doesn't turn into money, because there's nowhere for it to "release." The fix: force yourself into practice, sell your knowledge, teach, consult.

比劫成群, 無官無印 (A crowd of Friends, no Officer, no Resource)

The chart of "the outlaw" — lots of energy, no discipline, no resource. Often the fate of a drifter, an adventurer without luck. The fix: harsh external discipline (the military, a monastery, sport) that compensates for the missing inner structure.

Ultimately, your career in BaZi isn't "work" in the Western sense. It's a channel for releasing your energy into the world. Every star has its own channel, and the tragedy of most people is that they "release" their energy through the wrong one. A Hurting-Officer person sitting as an accountant develops liver problems. A Direct-Officer person who throws themselves into crypto trading loses money and stability. An Eating-God aesthete working as a sales manager can't understand why they feel bad "despite a good salary."

Knowing your archetype is the first step. Accepting it is the second. Rebuilding your life around it is the third, and the hardest. But it's exactly at that third step that people become what the Ziping school called 「明命者」 — "those who understand their destiny." They don't fight themselves — they know precisely what they are, and they follow their own channel.
