By May many people are ready to declare summer, but in BaZi summer begins strictly at the node 立夏 (lì xià, "the establishment of summer"), around May 6. With it the Snake month 巳 (sì) comes in, and from a warm spring we move into the first real wave of Fire. In 2027 this is especially noticeable: the year itself is fiery, 丁未, and when the season joins the year, the result is amplification.

The month pillar is 乙巳 (yǐ sì). The upper character 乙 is Yin Wood: grass, vine, flower, everything flexible, twining, clinging. The lower one, 巳, is the Snake branch, Fire, and inside it hide 丙, 庚 and 戊. With the year branch 未 the month forms two thirds of the seasonal trio 巳午未, the 三會 (sān huì), the Directional Combination of summer Fire.

The whole month rests on one question: what do you do when the climate of the chart gets hotter? That is what follows, together with the usual set: signs, Day Masters, practice. The month, as always, is general background and not a calendar of events. If you would like to see how much Fire your own chart holds, you can calculate it for free.

1 Why summer begins in May

The familiar seasons of the Gregorian calendar are shifted against BaZi by about a month to a month and a half. In BaZi, spring occupies the months 寅卯辰 (February to April), summer 巳午未 (May to July), autumn 申酉戌 and winter 亥子丑. Summer opens with 立夏 around May 6, the middle of the month falls on 小滿 (xiǎo mǎn, "lesser fullness") around May 21, and it closes on the eve of 芒種 (máng zhòng, "grain in ear") around June 6.

This is not an abstraction: the month branch determines the "month command", 月令, of a whole chart. If you were born between May 6 and June 5, your Day Master was born in the season of the Snake. What this means for the strength and weakness of the Day Master is explained in the article on 月令. For everyone else the branch 巳 works as an external seasonal background.

2 乙 over 巳: fuel for the fire

Here is the classical metaphor: grass 乙 grows by hot stones. From the point of view of generation of the elements, the stem 乙 feeds the branch 巳; Wood is laid into Fire (木生火). The pillar turns out "combustible": not explosive but even, because 乙 is soft Wood and not the thick log of 甲.

Inside 巳 there are three hidden stems. The main one is 丙 (Yang Fire), the "sun". Next to it are 庚 (Yang Metal) and 戊 (Yang Earth). An interesting detail: the 庚 in 巳 and the 乙 above it form the combination 乙庚合, so the pillar is joined to itself from inside. The classics speak of such an "inner pair" cautiously: it gives this combination a coherence, almost an agreement between flexible Wood and hard Metal. The mechanics of stem combinations are in the article on 天干合.

The year stem 丁 and the month stem 乙 form neither a combination nor a clash. But 乙 feeds 丁, which means it gently nourishes the fire of the year. Nothing unexpected: an even rise in temperature.

For different Day Masters this fuel means different things, and it is worth pausing here. If your Day Master is Fire (丙, 丁), the month adds strength and visibility, but easily overheats: you are pulled to take on too much, to argue, to prove. If your Day Master is Water (壬, 癸), the fiery season pulls your energy toward controlling wealth (財): there are many tasks and much money in play, but it is important not to burn out serving other people's goals. For a Day Master of Earth (戊, 己), the fire of the month through 巳 arrives as a Resource (印): support, learning, patrons, a good time for gaining knowledge. And a Metal Day Master (庚, 辛) should be more attentive: Fire melts Metal (火克金), and in the hot season such people tire faster and react more sharply, so a pause and "water" in daily life help them especially.

3 巳午未: two of the three so far

Now the assembly. The trio 巳午未 is called 三會 (sān huì), "three meetings", or the seasonal gathering. It collects the branches of one season, summer, into a single element, Fire. At the moment the calendar of the year has 巳 (month) and 未 (year), and 午 is not yet there. The Horse branch arrives with the next month, 丙午, and then next to the year's 未 will stand not the Snake but the Horse, and with an additional union 午未. All three branches will not meet at once in the calendar; a full trio forms only where the missing member stands in your chart. But the build-up is felt month by month: May prepares, June carries on, July, 丁未, reaches the peak.

For your personal chart this means the following. If it contains 午, this pair with 巳 and 未 gives a full Fire gathering here and now. If not, the month remains a pair, but with a distinct lean toward heat. We explained the difference between 三合 and 三會 in the article on the Three Harmony: 三合 is a union by element, 三會 is by season and denser.

4 The climate of the chart and 調候

The principle of 調候 (tiáo hòu, "adjusting the climate") says that a chart should be neither too hot nor too cold, neither too dry nor too damp. A hot chart is treated with Water, a cold one with Fire. If you were born in winter months, the fiery summer of the year can be healing for you, like a warm room. If you were born in summer or already have a lot of Fire in the chart, the summer of the year strengthens the imbalance.

The season of birth gives a quick estimate, though it does not replace a full calculation. For those born in winter months (亥, 子, 丑, roughly November to January), the fiery half of 2027 is most often helpful: a freezing chart needs Fire, and May with its acceleration gives the first real warmth. Those born in summer months (巳, 午, 未, roughly May to July) should, conversely, build "water" into daily life in advance, meaning rest, coolness, unhurriedness, because the season adds heat where there is already plenty. Those born in spring and autumn go through May more gently: their chart is closer to balance, and they feel the fiery month more as a change of scenery than as an overshoot. This is a rough but useful map of the terrain; the exact tuning of climate comes only from reading the full chart with the Day Master and its strength.

The practical conclusion: in the 乙巳 month, look at whether you are accumulating "heat" in your affairs: overload with projects, irritability, struggle for status. These are images, not medical diagnoses. Everything that gives "water" in the everyday sense (rest, cool heads, a pause in correspondence) works better than pressure in such a period. More on the concept is in the article on 調候.

5 The twelve signs in the Snake month

The relationships of the month branch 巳 with the twelve branches. This is a surface layer by the year sign, while real meaning comes from all four branches of your chart, above all the day branch.

Sign branchLink with 巳What it means in the 乙巳 month
子 Ratno direct linkNo direct link. The Rat stays aside from the summer wave, and Water is worth its weight in gold here.
丑 Oxhalf 三合 Three HarmonyHalf of the Metal trio 巳酉丑 (酉 is missing): the Ox gets resource, clarity and support. Good for plans and order.
寅 Tiger害 harm, 刑 punishmentHarm and punishment at once: the Tiger and the Snake can catch on each other. Watch for hidden grievances.
卯 Rabbitno direct linkNo direct link. The Rabbit receives Wood's nourishment from Fire; the mood is even.
辰 Dragonno direct linkNo direct link. The Dragon goes in parallel; the Earth of the month increases its reserve without interfering.
巳 Snake伏吟 fu yin, doublingYour own month. The Snake is more visible and sharper, and the attention of others is higher than usual.
午 Horse三會 Directional CombinationTogether with the year's 未, a Horse branch in your chart completes the summer gathering 巳午未: energy, activity, brightness. Beware of overheating in work and conversation.
未 Goathalf 三會 Directional CombinationTwo thirds of the summer gathering (午 is missing): the Goat in its own year gets one more layer of Fire. A rich but even month.
申 Monkey六合 Six Harmony, 刑 punishment, 破 destructionA combination, a punishment and a destruction in one link. Attraction together with difficult moments; clarity and honesty are needed.
酉 Roosterhalf 三合 Three HarmonyHalf of the Metal trio (丑 is missing): the Rooster gets support and a sense of order. Suited to projects and learning.
戌 Dogno direct linkNo direct link. The Dog looks from the side, but in the Goat year its load is high anyway.
亥 Pig冲 clashA direct clash of the Snake and the Pig: Water puts out Fire. Roads, changes, arguments, a good reason to revise plans.

The hardest pair is the Snake and the Monkey: 巳申 is at once a combination, a punishment and a destruction, three layers in one link. The classics call such a pair "both love and quarrel". The Tiger has a similar knot: 巳寅 gives both harm and punishment. For the Pig, 巳亥冲 is a direct clash. More about the types of links is in the articles on clashes, punishments and destructions.

6 What the stem 乙 means for different Day Masters

The stem 乙 comes to each Day Master in the role of one of the Ten Gods. The left column is calculated from generation and control, the right one shows the feeling:

Day Master乙 for themHow it sounds this month
Yang Wood (甲)劫財 Rob WealthYour kin by element are nearby. Good teamwork, but it is worth dividing resources in advance.
Yin Wood (乙)比肩 FriendYou among your own. Cohesion, support from friends and colleagues, but also noticeable competition.
Yang Fire (丙)正印 Direct ResourceA warm, supporting influence, teachers and a foundation. Suited to learning and recovery.
Yin Fire (丁)偏印 Indirect ResourceUnconventional knowledge and help from the side. A month for self-education.
Yang Earth (戊)正官 Direct OfficerRules, status, responsibility. A socially active month that profits from order.
Yin Earth (己)七殺 Seven KillingsPressure, deadlines, hard competition. With discipline it brings results.
Yang Metal (庚)正財 Direct WealthThe combination 乙庚 and Direct Wealth: income, partnership, useful contacts. A warm month for deals.
Yin Metal (辛)偏財 Indirect WealthIndirect Wealth and a 乙辛 clash: opportunities along with sharp turns. Be careful with risks.
Yang Water (壬)傷官 Hurting OfficerA sharp tongue, criticism, creative rebellion. Good for ideas, worse for subordination.
Yin Water (癸)食神 Eating GodTalent, gentle self-expression, pleasure in the process. A month for creative projects.

Special cases. The Day Master 庚 receives 乙庚合, a combination, and a very personal one. The Day Master 辛 faces the clash 乙辛冲 (Metal cuts grass), which is sometimes felt as sudden criticism or "interference with a knife". The ten roles in general are described in the overview of the Ten Gods.

7 Tempo, tasks and rest

Work. The month suits an even build-up. Fire pulls upward, but the Wood of 乙 does not allow an explosion, so the best results come from regular short pushes, not a week-long marathon. If you are a designer, teacher or editor, anything that demands delicacy comes out better than usual.

Negotiations. The Snake is a strategist who watches for a long time and rarely repeats itself. With people in such a month a conversation tends to succeed if you have prepared in advance: a written agenda, clear questions. Improvisation on hot emotions leaves a residue, while a calm, well-thought-out conversation in May goes especially well.

Money and projects. The Metal 庚 hidden in 巳 hints at the theme of calculation and structure: May is good not only for inspiration but also for turning ideas into estimates, schedules, concrete steps. Fire gives enthusiasm, and the hidden Metal advises putting it into a plan, otherwise the fuel burns off in vain. For those whose money in the chart comes through Fire or Earth, late May is a convenient window to launch what brings income in the warm season. But, as always, choosing a specific date for a big deal is separate work on the full chart, not on a single monthly background.

Roads and moves. For those born in the years of the Pig, Rabbit and Goat (亥卯未), the branch 巳 is the Traveling Horse, 驛馬 (yì mǎ): the theme of travel, change of place, business trips. For the Goat this is all the more interesting because the year is its own. More on the star is in the article on the Traveling Horse.

An honest caveat. Talk of a "hot" and "cold" climate of the chart is figurative. It helps you choose the tone of the month, but it does not replace a doctor's advice and diagnoses nothing. Health is a question of a different level.

Rest. Summer comes into force, and for many the best decision is to move exertion to the morning rather than the heat of the day. This is everyday wisdom, not a prescription, a choice in favor of a rhythm that does not scorch.

By weeks, May reads as acceleration. The first week after 立夏 (around May 6) is still a transition: affairs are "coming out" of the spring 甲辰, and the first days are better given to tuning rather than a sprint. The middle of the month, around 小滿 (about May 21), when "lesser fullness" gathers strength, is a convenient window for active actions: negotiations, presentations, launches designed for the warm season. The last week, before 芒種 (about June 6), already feels the approach of the double Fire of June, and if you are preparing a big start, it is sensible to finish preparation in May and set the launch for early summer, when the pair 午未 comes together.

8 How to check the month against your own chart

A further word on the stem 乙. In the classics its image is a vine, a flower, grass by a wall. It is flexible and tenacious, and reaches its goal by a roundabout route. In negotiations such people, and such months, get results not by pressure but by persistent presence: remind, offer a variant, approach from another side. That is the tactic worth choosing in May: a direct attack in the manner of 甲 would give less here than a patient indirect movement.

If, however, you notice that flexibility is turning into yielding, where you give more than you get, look at the Day Master column above: it shows where the month pushes you in particular.

Let us see on an example how this comes together. Let the Day Master be 壬 (Yang Water), with 午 (Horse) and 申 (Monkey) in the chart. The month stem 乙 for 壬 is 傷官, vivid expression and ideas that want to come out. The branch 午, together with the month's 巳 and the year's 未, completes the full gathering 巳午未: there is noticeably more Fire in such a chart, and for a watery Day Master Fire is wealth and affairs (財), that is, a lot of work and temptations. The branch 申 meanwhile catches the complex knot of combination, punishment and destruction with 巳. The result is composite: the month gives energy to speak up and to earn, but requires you to watch that you do not overheat or quarrel on level ground. Replace 午 with 子 (Rat), and the picture becomes colder and calmer: there is more water in the chart, and the fiery month is felt as welcome warmth, not as overload. One pillar, 乙巳, two different scenarios.

A monthly forecast averages everyone. To see what the month does to you in particular, check who your Day Master is, how Fire and Water are distributed in the chart, whether you have 午, 寅, 申, 亥 and 酉 (branches entering links with 巳), and what stands in your current luck pillar. If Fire and Wood are useful to you, it is one of the easiest periods of the year; if they are harmful, the summer demands care.

Remember that both the month and the year describe general background, not fate. The full picture comes only from the chart by date, time and place of birth. You can compare it with the other months of 2027 in the calendar, and how monthly pillars are read is told in the article on 流月.

Fire needs fuel and a place to breathe. The question for May is which of the two you are short of.

9 Frequently asked questions

When does the Snake month begin in 2027?

The 乙巳 month opens with the node 立夏, around May 6, 2027, and lasts until June 5, on the eve of 芒種. The date can float by a day depending on the moment of the astronomical transition.

What is 巳午未 and why is only a pair gathered in May?

It is the seasonal gathering of summer, three branches of one element, Fire. In May the calendar holds 巳 (month) and 未 (year), and 午 arrives only in June, with the month 丙午.

What does 乙庚合 mean in the pillar 乙巳?

Inside 巳 the stem 庚 is hidden, and it forms a combination with the upper 乙. This inner pair gives the pillar coherence. It promises no additional events.

Which sign has the hardest May?

The Pig: 巳亥冲 gives a direct clash. The Tiger and the Monkey are not easy either, because the Snake forms complex knots of harm, punishment and destruction with them.

Why does the article talk about the climate of the chart?

In BaZi the principle of 調候 teaches balance between heat and cold. A fiery month intensifies the imbalance in hot charts and warms cold ones, so the general background sounds different for each reader.
