One of the most down-to-earth branches in the calendar is 辰 (chén), the Dragon. In the other zodiac signs people look for character and amplitude, but in BaZi 辰 is most often read as a warehouse: damp earth where water accumulates and where the remains of spring Wood are kept. The Dragon month begins with 清明 (qīng míng, "clear and bright") around April 5 and ends on the eve of 立夏, May 5. In the middle stands 穀雨 (gǔ yǔ, "grain rain"), around April 20, when seeds are sown and when, by the classical image, the earth most needs water.

In 2027 the month pillar is 甲辰 (jiǎ chén). The upper character 甲 is Yang Wood, a big tree, a trunk without bends. The lower one is Earth, but not dry: damp, with a reserve of water. The month has an interesting feature: right beside it, in the year pillar, stands another "storehouse", 未, the Goat. Two storehouses in one room is what the third part of this article is about.

As always, everything said here is the general background of the month, not a schedule of events. Personal meaning appears when you lay it over your own chart, and that has its own section too. If you do not have the chart yet, calculate it for free.

1 What 辰 is: not only the Dragon

The branch 辰 belongs to the four "storehouses", 四庫 (sì kù): together with 戌, 丑 and 未 it does not belong to one season but "glues" their borders together. These are the Earth branches, and each of them keeps the remains of the element of the season that has just passed. 辰 stores Water (by the formula of the trio 申子辰) and the remnants of spring Wood.

The three hidden stems of 辰 are 戊 (Yang Earth, the main one), 乙 (Yin Wood, the remainder of spring) and 癸 (Yin Water, the reserve of moisture). By the classics, the Dragon "holds" Wood, Water and Earth itself, so the branch is often called "wet earth": everything grows from such soil. How these reserves are read is described in the material on hidden stems and 墓庫 storehouses.

For reading a chart in practice, these hidden stems matter more than they seem. For a person who needs Water, 辰 in the chart or in the month provides a quiet but real reserve of moisture through the hidden 癸: not a rushing stream, but groundwater to lean on in a dry Fire year. For someone who needs Wood, the hidden 乙 is useful: a remnant of spring, a rootlet that growth can cling to. And for those who already have plenty of Earth, an extra 辰 adds weight and inertia: things go thoroughly but slowly. That is why the same Dragon month sounds like relief for a watery chart and like a need to clear accumulated matters for an earthy one. What from the hidden reserve will "fire" in your case depends on which stems of your chart are already on the surface.

2 甲 over 辰: a stem on top of a storehouse

Now let us join the floors. 甲 over 辰: Wood stands on Earth, and by the formula of control Wood overcomes Earth (木克土). But 辰 has its own root of Wood, 乙, so the big tree is not hanging in the air here. The second reserve is Water, 癸, nourishing the roots. The result is a pillar of "a strong tree on fertile soil": growth, rooting, a feeling that things have a foundation.

For the Fire of the year, 丁, the stem 甲 is a parent: Wood burns and feeds Fire (木生火). So in this month a helping force stands, in the classical sense, over the Fire Goat. The effect is not a "gift" but rather a resource: fuel appears, but it needs to be used. If you know in advance where to invest your strength, the month pays off; if not, it leaks away on trifles.

The month pillar is the general command of the season, described in the article on the month command. How the stem 甲 behaves in your own case depends on who you are in the chart.

3 Two storehouses: 辰 in the year 未

Now the main feature of the month. The year branch 未 is also a storehouse, and a storehouse of Wood at that (the last branch of the trio 亥卯未), while the month branch 辰 is the storehouse of Water. Between themselves they form no union, no clash and no punishment, so they are classically neutral. But the proximity of two storehouses in one calendar window creates a characteristic theme: what has been accumulated lies in plain view, and the question is what to do with it.

BaZi practice knows the "opening of a storehouse" (開庫, kāi kù): by a widespread interpretation the contents of a storehouse come out when the storehouse branch receives a direct clash 冲 (less often the same is said of punishment 刑, and schools disagree here). Between 辰 and 未 there is no such clash, since 辰未 are not among the six 冲, so the classics do not expect a sharp opening here. But it is important not to push the thought to the extreme: "no 冲" does not mean "the storehouse is locked tight". Two storehouse branches side by side still set the theme of accounting, and preparatory work goes on by itself: inventory, sorting boxes, reconciling accounts. In personal terms it sounds like "what I have been putting off now needs to be laid out", without a dramatic "release", but insistently.

Separately, note that if your chart has 戌, the Dragon month strikes it (辰戌冲), and 戌 already has links with the Goat of the year (未戌破, and the punishment 刑 in the trio 丑戌未). So for people with a Dog in the chart several layers are touched at once. More is in the articles on clashes and punishments.

4 The twelve signs in the Dragon month

The table below shows the relationship of the month branch 辰 to all twelve branches. Read it as a surface layer: what really matters are all four branches of your chart, especially the day branch.

Sign branchLink with 辰What it means in the 甲辰 month
子 Rathalf 三合 Three HarmonyHalf of the Water trio 申子辰 (申 is missing): the Rat receives support and resources. A good month for saving up and for contacts.
丑 Ox破 destructionDestruction: the Ox and the Dragon wear each other down. Old agreements need renewal.
寅 Tigerhalf 三會 Directional CombinationA seasonal gathering of Wood (half, 卯 is missing): the Tiger feels lift and support. The month helps bring what was begun to a result.
卯 Rabbithalf 三會, 害 harmA seasonal gathering and harm at once: support runs alongside small grievances. Watch your words.
辰 Dragon自刑 self-punishmentSelf-punishment: the Dragon meets the Dragon, and inner tension builds up. Give yourself an outlet through action.
巳 Snakeno direct linkNo direct link. The Snake watches and prepares for its own month, which starts in a few days.
午 Horseno direct linkNo direct link. The Horse works at its own pace; the month neither interferes nor pushes.
未 Goatno direct linkA neutral pair of storehouses: the Goat in its own year is calm, and the theme is accounting and order in affairs.
申 Monkeyhalf 三合 Three HarmonyHalf of the Water trio (子 is missing): the Monkey finds a common language with the Dragon, and a resource for communication and plans appears.
酉 Rooster六合 Six HarmonyThe union 辰酉: attraction and cooperation. A good month for deals and joint projects.
戌 Dog冲 clashThe main clash of the month: two storehouses strike each other. Changes, urgent questions, a review.
亥 Pigno direct linkNo direct link. The Pig goes evenly, Water around supports, but decides nothing for you.

This month has two pairs worth watching closely. The first is the Dragon and the Dog: 辰戌冲 (chén-xū chōng) strikes a pair of storehouses and brings long-lying questions to the surface. The second is the Dragon and the Ox: 辰丑破 is milder but unpleasant because of a quiet destruction of agreements. The Rat and the Monkey, on the contrary, belong with the Dragon to the Water trio 申子辰, and the month is more generous for them.

5 What the stem 甲 means for different Day Masters

The stem 甲 turns into one of the Ten Gods depending on who you are in the chart. The God column is calculated; the right-hand column shows the practical meaning:

Day Master甲 for themHow it sounds this month
Yang Wood (甲)比肩 FriendPeople like you are nearby. Support from the like-minded, but also competition for place and attention.
Yin Wood (乙)劫財 Rob WealthResources are shared, friends ask for loans. Protect shared money and keep clear boundaries.
Yang Fire (丙)偏印 Indirect ResourceUnconventional knowledge and help from the side. Suited to self-teaching and a change of angle.
Yin Fire (丁)正印 Direct ResourceSupport, patrons, quiet accumulation of strength. The month restores and teaches.
Yang Earth (戊)七殺 Seven KillingsPressure, deadlines, responsibility. With discipline it gives results; without it, it wears you out.
Yin Earth (己)正官 Direct OfficerThe combination 甲己 and a Direct Officer: status, rules, agreements. A pleasant sense of responsibility and recognition.
Yang Metal (庚)偏財 Indirect WealthIndirect Wealth and a 甲庚 clash: money and opportunities come together with nervous tension and arguments.
Yin Metal (辛)正財 Direct WealthStable income, payment for work, careful financial steps.
Yang Water (壬)食神 Eating GodTalent, pleasure in the work, creation. Suited to creative and craft projects.
Yin Water (癸)傷官 Hurting OfficerA sharp mind, criticism, difficulty with rules. Good for ideas, worse for formalities.

For the Day Master 己 this is 甲己合, a combination of stems, and it is usually felt as a warm attraction: to a person, to a task, to an obligation. For the Day Master 庚 it can be the other way round: 甲庚冲 gives tension between stems, and the month feels like a "quarrel with the boss" or an "argument with yourself". The general structure of the Ten Gods is in the article on 十神, and what the year stem means for each Day Master is covered in the 2027 forecast.

6 Home, documents, money

Home. The damp earth of the month suits everything connected with rooting: planting, repairs, organizing space, buying things "for years". Household tasks go more easily than a race after novelty. If a rearrangement has been hanging over you for a long time, April is suitable.

Documents and money. The storehouse nudges toward accounting. It is a good month for putting papers in order, closing small debts, reviewing subscriptions and expenses, and sorting out tax formalities. Nothing grandiose, but nothing risky either. It is especially fitting for those for whom Earth or Water in the chart are useful elements. The yearly dimension of money is covered in the article on money in 2027.

Health and rhythm, without medical conclusions. The classics associate Wood with the liver and tendons, and the damp Earth of 辰 with digestion and the accumulation of "dampness". This is a system of images, not a diagnosis: we treat and predict nothing. The useful observation from it is more everyday: in a month of damp earth the body is helped by movement, stretching and moderation in heavy food, while long immobility only strengthens the feeling of stagnation. If April makes you sluggish, that is a signal to add activity, not medication, and with real complaints go to a doctor, not to a calendar.

Negotiations. Wood over Earth means that it is better to speak concretely, with numbers and dates. Phrases like "let's see as we go" backfire in this month. April soil likes certainty: a recorded agreement, a written figure, a set date hold firmer than oral intentions, which by May will have dissolved in the Fire rush that begins.

By weeks, April falls into two halves. From 清明 (around April 5) to 穀雨 (around April 20) the earth is only warming up: a good time to tidy up, revise papers and plan, but not to close large deals. The second half, after 穀雨, when "the rains nourish the crops", is already suitable for actions that are expected to pay back: signing a contract, investing in repairs, launching what has been in preparation. Closer to 立夏 (around May 5) impatience appears; that is the next, fiery month 乙巳 already "pulling", and it is wiser to move a big start to early May and leave April for preparation.

The 華蓋 mark. For those whose birth year or day belongs to the trio 申子辰 (Rat, Dragon, Monkey), the branch 辰 is the Canopy, 華蓋 (huá gài). It is a star of solitude, crafts and inner life. In the Dragon month these people feel like closing the door and attending to their own affairs, and that is fine. More about the star is in the article on the Canopy star.

7 The seasonal picture: from 清明 to 立夏

The month is divided into two nodes. The first is 清明, "clear and bright", around April 5, the start of the month: the sky clears and the earth warms. The second is 穀雨, around April 20, the middle of the month: rains nourish the crops. It all ends on the eve of 立夏 (lì xià, "start of summer"), around May 5 or 6, when the Snake month 乙巳 begins.

In the transition from 甲辰 to 乙巳 the element changes from Earth to Fire, and many feel it as a change of rhythm: the April storehouse empties and May demands quick action. If you plan a big start in early summer, the best time to prepare is April.

You can compare it with the other months of 2027 in our calendar by month, and the general logic of reading monthly pillars is explained in the article on 流月.

8 How to check the month against your own chart

Here are three questions worth asking yourself in April. What is lying in my "storehouse" and has long needed sorting: documents, debts, unfinished projects, unspoken conversations? Which single trunk, that is, which one main undertaking, do I want to grow by summer while Wood is strong? And where do I have no soil under my feet: the idea is there, but the resources, time or support are not? These questions have nothing to do with fortune-telling; they follow directly from the image of the month, a big tree on damp earth.

If the answers are obvious, April is simply a pleasant month of putting things in order. If not, that is a reason to look at the full chart and see which of your branches react to 辰: everyone has their own.

A short example of how the layers read together. Suppose the Day Master is 己 (Yin Earth), and the chart has 子 (Rat) and 戌 (Dog). The month stem 甲 for 己 is 甲己合, a combination of stems: it pulls toward commitment, partnership, formalizing and fixing something. The branch 子 forms with the month's 辰 half of the Water trio 申子辰, giving support and a resource. But 戌 catches 辰戌冲 and in addition is already linked to the year's 未 (破 and 刑 in 丑戌未), so along the Dog line the month touches the "old warehouses". The conclusion is not "April is good" or "bad" but composite: the month pushes you to formalize an agreement (the 甲己 combination), gives you a resource for it (the Water trio), but requires you first to deal with what 辰戌冲 opens. Another Day Master with other branches would read the same 甲辰 quite differently.

Any general reading of a month describes an average temperature. To see the personal meaning of 甲辰, answer four questions. Who is your Day Master and what role does 甲 play for it? Does your chart have 戌, 丑, 卯 and 申, 子, 酉, that is, branches that enter unions or conflicts with 辰? Is Wood among your useful elements (see 用神)? And which luck pillar are you in now?

If you need Wood, April can be a strong month of growth and rooting. If your chart has an excess of Wood, the stem 甲 will only add pressure and demand brakes. A month is a general background, not fate: precise answers come only from the full chart built from date, time and place of birth.

Two storehouses side by side do not slam open. They ask you to count what you have.

9 Frequently asked questions

When does the Dragon month begin in BaZi in 2027?

The 甲辰 month opens with the node 清明 around April 5, 2027, and ends on the eve of 立夏, around May 5. The exact hours depend on the astronomical moment of transition.

Why is 辰 called a storehouse?

The branch 辰 is one of the four storehouses 辰戌丑未. Three stems are hidden in it: 戊 Earth, 乙 Wood and 癸 Water, so it is read as damp earth with a reserve of water and the remains of spring Wood.

Which sign has the hardest April?

The Dog: 辰戌冲 gives a clash, and the Dog also has links with the Goat of the year. Less visible but unpleasant for the Ox (辰丑破) and the Rabbit (辰卯害).

What does "opening of the storehouse" mean in this month?

A storehouse opens when its branch is struck directly by a clash. The Dragon and the Goat do not clash, so there is no real opening, but the theme of accounting and sorting out what has accumulated stays relevant.

Is April 2027 good for buying property or renovating?

The general background of the month suits rooting and household tasks, but the date of a transaction is chosen by classical rules and your chart. The month gives no guarantees.
