Ask someone when their year begins and they will say January 1. Ask a BaZi practitioner and they will reach for the table of solar terms and look for 立春 (lì chūn, "the establishment of spring"). In 2027 that term falls around February 4, and two things start together: the year 丁未 and its first month, 壬寅 (rén yín). Until that moment it is still the Horse year, even if, by the lunar calendar, families are already setting the table for a celebration. Chinese New Year in 2027 lands on February 6.

The 壬寅 month runs until March 5. In it, great Water meets young Wood, and above both of them stands the year's stem 丁, thin Fire, a candle flame. In this article we look at how the energy of the month is built, which of the twelve animal signs it supports and which it presses on, what the stem 壬 means for each of the ten Day Masters, and how to live with it in practice: work, negotiations, rest.

One caveat before we start. A month is general background, not a schedule of events. It describes the weather, not what will happen to you personally. How that weather settles on your chart depends on the other seven characters in it, and the last section is devoted to exactly that. If you do not have your chart yet, you can calculate it for free in a minute.

1 Where the February 4 boundary comes from

Monthly pillars in BaZi are not cut by calendar dates. They follow twelve "node" terms out of the twenty-four solar terms. The Tiger month opens with 立春, the Rabbit month with 驚蟄 (jīng zhé, "awakening of insects") around March 6, and so on around the wheel. That is why 壬寅 in 2027 occupies the window from February 4 to March 5, give or take a day: the exact hour depends on the moment the Sun reaches 315 degrees of ecliptic longitude.

The practical consequence is simple. If someone was born on February 3 or 4, their chart may belong to the previous year, and their birth month will turn out to be the last month of winter, 丑. A very common mistake in do-it-yourself calculations is to take the year from Chinese New Year and the month from the Gregorian calendar. The role of the month branch for the whole chart is covered in our article on 月令, the month command, and the full grid of all twelve months of 2027 is in the 2027 calendar by month.

2 What stands in the 壬寅 pillar

The upper character is 壬 (rén), Yang Water. This is not a brook or a shower. It is a river, a sea, a large mass of water that flows and carries things with it. The lower character is 寅 (yín), the Tiger branch, the beginning of spring and an element of Wood. Inside 寅 sit three hidden stems: 甲 (big Wood, the main one), 丙 (Yang Fire) and 戊 (Yang Earth). Spring has only just begun and it is still cold outside, but the branch already holds Fire and Earth inside, the raw material for further growth.

The interaction within the pillar is easy to read: Water generates Wood (水生木). The stem 壬 feeds the branch 寅, so the pillar comes out "fluid" and growing. In the classics, an arrangement where the upper character produces the lower one is considered harmonious: force moves from top to bottom without resistance. For us that means February 2027 feels like a month of beginnings rather than a month of clearing out. Trying to brake it is pointless, and so is waiting for a "convenient moment": the launch is already under way.

The four pillars of your own chart are read the same way. Our piece on hidden stems explains that every branch has an underwater part, and it is that part that often decides how a month actually works out.

3 How 壬寅 sits on the year 丁未

The year stem is 丁, Yin Fire. The month stem is 壬, Yang Water. Between them there is 丁壬合 (dīng rén hé), a combination of Heavenly Stems. In theory such a combination "transforms" into Wood, but in practice the transformation rarely happens, and what we usually see is something else: the year stem ends up bound. The Fire of 丁 offers a hand to the Water of 壬 and stays what it is. In short, this is the month in which the year first "gets acquainted" with you, and the acquaintance is a gentle one. The mechanics of stem combinations are described in the article on 天干合, combinations of the Heavenly Stems.

Now the branches. 寅 and 未 form no direct classical relationship: no combination, no clash, no punishment. It is a neutral pair. But the hidden stems show some kinship: 丙 from the Tiger and 丁 from the Goat are both Fire, 甲 and 乙 are both Wood, 戊 and 己 are both Earth. That is not a "link" in the strict sense, yet the background is related and nothing contradicts anything else. For a Fire Goat year, the Tiger in the first month neither interferes nor actively helps.

The takeaway for mood: a start without friction. There is no clash to burn energy on, but there is also no ready-made union to do half the work for you. Whatever you begin in this month stands on your own effort and on your personal chart.

It also helps to keep the annual scale in mind. February is the gate of the year 丁未: the tone set in the first month carries through the next eleven. Classical readers often treat the first month of a year as a "seed", not out of superstition but from simple logic: habits, contacts and projects started at the beginning have the most time to develop. So in 壬寅 it is wiser not to grab everything at once, but to choose one or two directions that Water and young Wood will help to grow naturally, and calmly put the rest aside. For people who have useful Water or Wood in their chart, February is usually the easiest month of the year. For those who already have these elements in excess, the same month can feel like too fast an acceleration that you want to slow down.

4 The twelve signs in the Tiger month

First, the "surface" layer: how the month branch 寅 relates to each of the twelve branches. What matters in reality is not only your birth-year sign but each of the four branches in your chart, especially the day branch (partner, inner world) and the month branch (work, environment). If the branch in question sits in your day pillar, the link is felt noticeably more strongly.

Sign branchLink with 寅What it means in the 壬寅 month
子 Ratno direct linkNeutral. The Rat walks beside the Tiger without friction, and Water is fed: a good background for work with information.
丑 Oxno direct linkNo direct links. A calm month, but the Ox may feel that someone else is setting the pace.
寅 Tiger伏吟 fu yin, doublingYour own month. Your themes are amplified, there is more visibility and more demand for you; watch for overload.
卯 Rabbithalf 三會 Directional CombinationTwo members of the spring trio 寅卯辰 (the third is 辰): a pull toward Wood, growing confidence and speed. Good for beginnings, harder on patience. The full gathering happens only if 辰 stands in your chart.
辰 Dragonhalf 三會 Directional CombinationAlso two members of 寅卯辰 (卯 is missing): team support and something already begun to lean on. The full gathering needs 卯 in the chart.
巳 Snake害 harm, 刑 punishmentA heavy combination: the Snake and the Tiger give harm and punishment at once. Hidden grudges and unpleasant surprises are possible.
午 Horsehalf 三合 Three HarmonyTwo members of the Fire trio 寅午戌 (the third is 戌): energy, enthusiasm, courage. Beware of too much fire; the full Fire union forms if 戌 is also in the chart.
未 Goatno direct linkA neutral pair, but this is your own year: the month breaks nothing and only highlights your theme.
申 Monkey冲 clash, 刑 punishmentThe sharpest: 寅申冲 plus 刑. Roads, change, arguments; a risk of hasty decisions, so check against your chart.
酉 Roosterno direct linkNo direct link. Metal as control over Wood is weakened; a tolerable month without sharp corners.
戌 Doghalf 三合 Three HarmonyTwo members of the Fire trio 寅午戌 (午 is missing): warm understanding, good relations with people. The full union needs 午 in the chart.
亥 Pig六合 Six Harmony, 破 destructionA combination and a destruction at once: 寅亥 合 and 破. Closeness arrives together with small breakages; do not rush to conclusions.

The hardest combination in the table is the Tiger and the Monkey: 寅申冲 (yín-shēn chōng) is joined by 刑 from the trio 寅巳申, the punishment of power. A clash by itself is not a catastrophe. It is movement that demands a decision. How such pairs are read is explained in the articles on clashes 沖 and punishments 刑.

5 What the stem 壬 means for different Day Masters

The Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) is the stem of your day pillar, the "you" in the chart. Each of the ten turns 壬 into one of the Ten Gods. The Ten God column is calculated from the cycle of generation and control of the Five Elements; the right-hand column shows what that looks like in practice.

Day Master壬 for themHow it sounds this month
Yang Wood (甲)偏印 Indirect ResourceWater nourishes you as an Indirect Resource: unconventional knowledge, teachers, ideas from outside. Good for study and for changing approach.
Yin Wood (乙)正印 Direct ResourceSupport, patrons, a sense of footing. Suited to paperwork, training and recovering strength.
Yang Fire (丙)七殺 Seven KillingsWater becomes control and influence over you: pressure from outside, but also a chance at status if you work within the rules.
Yin Fire (丁)正官 Direct OfficerDirect influence and recognition: a serious stimulus, though it comes with responsibility and a sense of other people's expectations.
Yang Earth (戊)偏財 Indirect WealthMoney comes through hands-on work and initiative; a good month for practical decisions, with some risk of overload.
Yin Earth (己)正財 Direct WealthSuited to careful financial steps and order in your affairs; calmest for those who avoid haste.
Yang Metal (庚)食神 Eating GodThe theme of talent, ideas, public self-expression. A month friendly to creative work, presentations, teaching.
Yin Metal (辛)傷官 Hurting OfficerVivid self-expression, a sharp tongue, a tendency to argue with authority; good for creativity, worse for subordination.
Yang Water (壬)比肩 FriendYou are doubled with your own element: lots of energy, but it needs a channel. Discipline and a clear task list help.
Yin Water (癸)劫財 Rob WealthHelp and support from people nearby, an exchange of resources, but also blurred borders between personal and shared money.

The names of the Gods are not verdicts. "Hurting Officer" is not necessarily a scandal, and "Rob Wealth" is not necessarily a loss of money. They are roles the month tries on you. What the Ten Gods are in general is explained in the overview article, and the same layer at the scale of the whole year is covered in the 2027 forecast.

6 In practice: work, negotiations, rest

Work. The month suits launches, but not a "big bang". Water feeds Wood, so gradual build-up goes better than a sudden jump. If you have been putting off a project for a long time, it is best to start with a small step in the first days rather than wait for the perfect moment: the branches do not interfere and the year stem is on your side.

Negotiations. The 丁壬 combination at the level of the stems works well for face-to-face conversation where flexibility is needed. With contracts that have rigid deadlines, be more careful around the edges of the month: in the first days after 立春 the change is happening at the level of the season, and people are still "coming out of winter". Sign after February 8–10 rather than on the day of the node itself.

Rest. The Tiger means movement, so a quiet lie-down holiday works worse this month than a short trip, a walk, or a change of scene. If you are a winter, watery person by sign or by chart, you will most likely crave warmth and sunshine, and that is normal.

Breaking the month into weeks helps you keep the pace. The first week after 立春, roughly February 4 to 10, is a time for a quiet start: the year has only just taken effect, people are still "living out" winter, and sharp moves fall flat. From the second and third weeks, when the Water of 壬 is confidently feeding the Wood of 寅, meetings go well, small products can be launched, and postponed negotiations can be revisited. Toward the end of the month, nearer 驚蟄 and the change of pillar to 癸卯 around March 6, you feel a sense of acceleration, and that is a normal transition. It is better to sign important things before the very border of the month rather than leaving them for the day of the node, when the "weather" is unsettled.

If the Tiger is in your chart. When 寅 stands in the day pillar, the month stops being a general background: the branch repeats in the most personal place of the chart and sounds louder. When the Tiger stands in the month pillar, it is 伏吟 with your month command. In both cases a template will not do, and you need to check against the full chart.

7 Stars and companions of the month

The branch 寅 plays a noticeable role as 驛馬 (yì mǎ, the Traveling Horse) for those whose birth year or day belongs to the trio 申子辰: Monkey, Rat, Dragon. For them the Tiger month is a month of movement: trips, moves, a change in work rhythm. More on the star is in the article on the Traveling Horse.

For those born in the years of the Tiger, Horse or Dog (寅午戌), everything feels familiar this month: the Tiger is theirs here, while the Horse and the Dog pull with it into the Fire trio 寅午戌, so the month supplies the missing link to what is already in their chart. When all three branches gather in one chart, this "hot" configuration is sometimes called a hot head, and February gives these people a reserve of energy. They simply should not spend it all in the very first week.

The Pig 亥 is double-natured here: 寅亥 gives both 合 (a combination) and 破 (a destruction). It is one of those cases where a pair behaves as "yes and no" at once. For the Pig the Tiger month is convenient in communication and close relationships, but prone to small, irritating breakages in those same relationships.

8 How to check the month against your own chart

Any general forecast for a month is an average over all people. For yourself, something else is more useful: compare 壬寅 with your full chart. Check which Day Master you have, where Water and Wood stand in the chart, whether 寅 or 申 is there, and which luck pillar you are currently in. If Water is needed in your chart as the useful god (用神 yòng shén), the month can turn out to be one of the easiest of the year, and the other way round.

Let us work through an example of how the layers add up. Suppose the Day Master is 丙 (Yang Fire), and the chart contains 子 (Rat) and 申 (Monkey). The month stem 壬 for 丙 is 七殺, Seven Killings: pressure from outside and, at the same time, a chance at status. The branch 申 in the chart enters 冲 and 刑 with the month's 寅 at once. The conclusion is not "February will be hard" but something more precise: the month brings external pressure and movement, trips, arguments, a sharp change of tasks, and the one who acts by the rules rather than on impulse wins. If instead of 申 the same person had 午 (Horse), the picture would read differently: 寅 and 午 would lean toward the Fire trio, and the pressure of Seven Killings would turn into excitement and initiative. The same 壬寅 pillar gives an almost opposite coloring on two charts, which is why a general forecast and a personal reading are different things.

Remember that a forecast for a sign or for a month is general background, not fate and not a calendar of events. There is no room here for "in February you will meet someone, lose something, get rich". The month amplifies or weakens themes that already exist in the chart. The precise picture comes only from the full chart: date, time and place of birth.

A month gives the weather. Your chart decides whether you are dressed for it.

For comparison: the next month, 癸卯, adds a half Wood union to the Water, and it is described in a separate article of the series. The general logic of reading monthly pillars inside a year is gathered in the material on 流月, the monthly pillar.

One last reminder about the border: the year 丁未 begins in BaZi charts on February 4, 2027, and January still belongs to the Horse year. Anyone born in the first days of February is a case to calculate carefully, not to guess.

9 Frequently asked questions

When does February begin in BaZi in 2027?

The 壬寅 month opens with the node 立春, around February 4, 2027, and lasts until March 5. The exact time depends on the hour and minute of the astronomical moment.

What does 丁壬合 mean in this month?

It is a combination of Heavenly Stems: the year stem 丁 joins the month stem 壬. In a real chart it does not automatically transform into Wood; rather, it softens the contact of Fire and Water and makes the month more flexible for negotiations.

Which sign has the hardest time in February 2027?

The Monkey: the branch 申 forms 寅申冲 with the Tiger and 刑 within the trio 寅巳申. Second-order difficulties belong to the Snake (害 and 刑) and the Pig (合 and 破 at once). This is general background, and a personal chart can smooth it or strengthen it.

Is this a good month to launch a business?

The month favors beginnings: Water feeds Wood and there is no direct clash with the year. But a launch date should be chosen from the full chart, not from a single month, and without expecting guarantees.

Why not go by Chinese New Year on February 6?

In BaZi the year and month are counted by solar nodes, not by the lunar calendar. That is why in 2027 the year 丁未 begins around February 4, before Chinese New Year.
