Among the Ten Gods (十神, shí shén — "ten gods/spirits"), 正印 (zhèng yìn, literally "direct/proper imprinting") holds a special place. This is the star of nourishment — the element that gives birth to your Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ — "the master of the day") with the same polarity (Yin-Yin or Yang-Yang). If your 日主 is you yourself, 正印 is whoever "feeds" you on the level of spirit and knowledge.

正印's image in classic texts is 母親 (mǔ qīn — "the mother"): the one who nourishes unconditionally. But this isn't only the literal mother — it's any source of support that gives you a resource without asking anything back. A wise mentor, an academic education, state benefits, an inheritance, a spiritual tradition — all of these are expressions of 正印 in your life.

In the Wu Xing system (五行, wǔ xíng — "five movements/elements"), each element gives birth to the next: Wood (木, mù) gives birth to Fire (火, huǒ), Fire gives birth to Earth (土, tǔ), Earth gives birth to Metal (金, jīn), Metal gives birth to Water (水, shuǐ), Water gives birth to Wood. The element that gives birth to your 日主 with the same polarity is your 正印.

For example: if your 日主 is 甲 Jia (jiǎ — "the first heavenly stem," Yang Wood), Water "gives birth to" you. Yang Water — 壬 (rén) — is your 正印. Yin Water — 癸 (guǐ) — is your 偏印 (piān yìn — "indirect resource").

A strong 正印 in the chart is almost always a sign of a love of education, and the ability to receive it. Such people learn easily, absorb academic material well, and respect diplomas and titles (their own, and other people's). Education for them isn't just a certificate — it's a way of thinking.

If 正印 is your 用神 (yòng shén — "useful god," the chart's chief resource), periods of study, earning diplomas, and taking courses will be the most productive of your life. Investments in knowledge pay off many times over.

4 正印 for women: support and motherhood

For a woman, 正印 symbolizes a supportive mother (既是母星亦为护身符 — both the mother star and a talisman of protection). A woman with a strong 正印 usually grew up in an atmosphere of support and care, or carries that care into the world herself. She intuitively understands other people's needs, and knows how to give without asking anything back.

In the context of motherhood: 正印 for a woman is one of the favorable signs for a child, especially combined with 食神 (shí shén — "the eating god"). This is the chart of a nourishing, wise mother.

For a man, 正印 is above all mentors and support from above. Men with a strong 正印 in their chart often find patrons — people older or higher in status who open doors and provide resources. This is also the star of inheritance: material, intellectual, spiritual.

Weakness in the chart's 正印 feels like being "on your own." Help doesn't arrive on time, there are no mentors, education comes with difficulty. A 正印 period in the 大運 (dà yùn — "great movements," the decades of destiny) is a time when support comes to you. Opportunities to study, mentors, state benefits, an inheritance. If 正印 is your 用神 (yòng shén), such a decade can be a turning point: resources you never had suddenly appear. People who help not because they must, but because they want to.

If 正印 isn't your 用神 (you're too strong a 日主, for whom support is excessive), such a period can mean dependence, passivity, excessive comfort. This is a period when you need to take the initiative yourself, rather than lean on outside help.
