The Great Ultimate — the star of wisdom and esotericism

In the system of Chinese philosophy there is a symbol known to everyone in the world — the famous black-and-white "Yin-Yang" monad with two dots inside it. This symbol is called Taiji (太極) — "the Great Ultimate." It denotes the fundamental unity of opposites, the source of all that exists, the point from which the whole cosmos is born.

In a BaZi chart there is a star bearing the name of this most profound philosophical concept — Taiji Guiren (太極貴人 (tài jí guì rén — "the great ultimate")), "the Noble Person of the Great Ultimate." They are not interested in "what will happen," but in "why anything happens at all." 1 What Taiji Guiren is — essence and history

Taiji Guiren belongs to the class of "noble stars" (Guiren, 貴人) — special markers in a chart that grant a person patronage and special qualities. Unlike the chief noble star, Tianyi Guiren (which grants "helpers" in the material world), Taiji Guiren grants something subtler: patronage in the spiritual and intellectual sphere.

This star is first described in detail in the treatise 三命通會 ("San Ming Tong Hui"), which says: "Taiji Guiren is the star of those born to grasp the great principles. Its carriers are drawn to the I Ching, medicine, astrology, the philosophy of Confucius and the Dao. They become scholars, physicians, advisors to emperors."

In the modern interpretation of the classical Ziping school this star is reinterpreted more broadly. Today "the great principles" are not only the I Ching and the Dao. They are any deep system of knowledge: quantum physics, mathematics, psychoanalysis, theology, esotericism, metaphysics. Carriers of Taiji Guiren often become theoretical scientists, practicing philosophers, esoteric masters, psychoanalysts, researchers.

An interesting etymological note: Taiji 太極 literally means "the extreme limit" or "the supreme fullness" — the point where Yin and Yang meet, where everything is born. The logic of this star rests on four "anchor points" (子午卯酉, zǐ-wǔ-mǎo-yǒu) — the "cardinal" earthly branches symbolizing north, south, east, west — and on four "corner points" (辰戌丑未, chén-xū-chǒu-wèi) — the "earth" branches symbolizing the transitional seasons.

The Year is the pillar of ancestors. Taiji here points to:

• A special relationship with a grandparent as a "sage" (often precisely they become the main influence).
• A sense of being "chosen," an understanding already in childhood that "I need to seek answers to the big questions."

Taiji Guiren in the Month Pillar

The Month is the pillar of career and social fulfillment. Taiji here means:

• A career tied to deep systems of knowledge.
• Often an academic career — university, research institute.
• Or an esoteric career — tarot reader, astrologer, metaphysics master, Chinese medicine expert.
• The ability to "see deeper" in one's field — even if the profession is not "philosophical," the person looks at it through the lens of the bigger picture.
• Often becomes a consultant, advisor, expert — rather than an "executor."

Taiji Guiren in the Day Branch

This is one of the most powerful positions. The Day Branch is the "partner" and the Day Master itself. Taiji here:

• A deeply introspective, philosophical, reflective personality.
• The partner is often a "teacher" or a "student" — a relationship built through intellectual and spiritual communication.
• Often marriages between two "researchers," people from an academic or spiritual milieu.

4 The bright side — what Taiji Guiren gives its carrier

Taiji Guiren is one of the most "noble" stars in the chart. What does it give?

Deep intellectual honesty. Carriers of Taiji Guiren are unable to settle for superficial answers. If they are told "because that's how it's done," they do not calm down. This trait makes them wonderful scientists and difficult employees — they ask the questions others don't ask.

The ability to find meaning in suffering. Even the hardest life trials are perceived by carriers of Taiji Guiren as "material for understanding." This does not make them insensitive, but it keeps them from being crushed.

5 The dark side — the real dangers

Every gift has a price. Taiji Guiren, for all its nobility, carries its own problems.

Social isolation

The main problem is difficulty communicating with "ordinary" people. Carriers of Taiji live at a different depth of conversation. When others discuss TV shows, shopping, or sports scores, such a person feels "out of place." The result is a narrow social circle, a feeling of being an "alien," sometimes chronic loneliness.

"Analysis paralysis"

Taiji + Huagai

Huagai — the "hermit star," the "canopy," a tendency toward solitude and spiritual seclusion. Combined with Taiji it produces the classic archetype of the monk-philosopher. Taiji + Kongwang

A paradoxical and fruitful combination. Kongwang — "emptiness," Taiji — "depth of understanding." Together they create the archetype of the "wise hermit". The carrier is not attached to worldly goods, yet possesses deep wisdom. Many Eastern teachers and Zen masters have this combination.

Taiji + Eating God (食神 (shí shén — "eating god"))

If your Taiji Guiren is active, stop trying to be "like everyone else." Your nature is depth. Recognize that:
