空亡 Kong Wang — Void
The Star of Absence, Loss and Spiritual Seeking

Classical BaZi has stars that are described beautifully — "Red Phoenix," "Great Ultimate," "National Seal." And then there's one whose very name sounds unsettling: Kong Wang 空亡 (kong wang — "void"). Translated literally: "Empty Loss," "Absent Nothing," "That Which Does Not Exist." The character 空 (kōng) means "emptiness," and 亡 (wáng) means "disappearance, demise, loss." Together — "empty non-being."

Many books and popular bloggers scare people: "You have Kong Wang — that means everything will fall apart, relatives will die, money will vanish!" In reality, Kong Wang is a far subtler and more philosophical star than its surface-level name suggests. In the hands of a master, it's a tool of deep understanding of destiny. In the hands of a fearmonger, it's a way to scare a client and sell a "protective amulet."

Let's work out what this star actually means in the canon of the Zi Ping (Ziping) school, how to calculate it correctly, and how to work with it without fear or illusion.

1 What Kong Wang is — the concept of "the void"

The concept of Kong Wang traces back to the ancient system of the "Sixty Jia-Zi" (六十甲子) — the sixty-cycle that underlies the whole of Chinese metaphysics. The 60 combinations of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches are divided into six decades of 10 pairs each. And in each decade, a peculiar thing happens: the 10 stems "cover" only 10 branches, while there are exactly 12 branches needing partners. This means that 2 branches in each decade remain "without stems" — without a partner. These are the empty branches, Kong Wang.

Metaphysically this means: in these positions there's no "roof," no heavenly support, the stem doesn't cover the root. The energy, so to speak, "leaks into the void," never reaching completion.

In the classic Yuan Hai Zi Ping (淵海子平) — the foundational treatise of the Ziping school — Kong Wang is described this way: "Kong Wang is the place where the Heavenly Stem does not reach the Earthly Branch. In this place, actions bear no fruit, accumulations do not hold, and events occur and dissolve like a dream."

In the Buddhist interpretation, actively used in Taiwan and Hong Kong, Kong Wang is linked to the concept of "shunyata" (空, emptiness) — a fundamental concept of Zen Buddhism. Bearers of a strong Kong Wang often become monks, philosophers, and spiritual teachers precisely because the material world "doesn't stick" to them.

2 How to calculate Kong Wang — a table of decades

Unlike most noble stars, Kong Wang is calculated not from the Year Branch, but from the Day Pillar — that is, from the pair "Heavenly Stem + Earthly Branch of the birth day." This makes Kong Wang a highly individual star, tightly bound to the Day Master itself.

All 60 Jia-Zi pairs are divided into 6 decades. Each decade begins with Jia (甲) and runs for 10 pairs. In each decade, two branches remain "empty."

The algorithm for finding your Kong Wang:

1. Find your Day Pillar (for example, 丙午 — Bing-Wu).
2. Determine which of the six decades it belongs to. Bing-Wu belongs to the Jia-Chen decade (the third decade from the top, starting at 甲申, since Bing-Wu is the seventh pair in that decade... or more simply: scan row by row until you find your Day Pillar).
3. Take the empty branches for that decade. For Bing-Wu, these are Chen (辰) and Si (巳).
4. Now check whether these branches appear in the other pillars of your chart — in Year, Month, or Hour. If they do, Kong Wang is active.

Example: a person was born with the Day Pillar 丙午 (Bing-Wu). Their Kong Wang is the branches 辰 (Chen) and 巳 (Si). If, say, their Hour Branch is 辰, then their birth hour falls into Kong Wang. This means the sphere of the Hour pillar (late life, children, creativity) is marked by "emptiness."

3 Kong Wang in the different pillars of the chart

The effect of Kong Wang differs greatly depending on which pillar it appears in. Each pillar governs its own sphere of life and its own age range.

Kong Wang in the Year Pillar

The Year is the pillar of parents, ancestors, and early life. Kong Wang here often means:

• Relationships with parents (especially the father) are troubled, distant, formal.
• Early childhood was "emotionally empty" — a lack of warmth, support, recognition.
• Family resources (inheritance, parents' connections) don't work in the person's favor.
• A feeling of "lost roots," "no home," emigration, or estrangement from parents.

This isn't a sentence, but a pointer: work on your emotional roots, don't wait for help from the past, build your own "home" from scratch.

Kong Wang in the Month Pillar

The Month is the pillar of career, environment, and social status. Kong Wang here means:

• The career develops along "indirect paths," with frequent changes of profession.
• Social status isn't fixed — sometimes a rise, sometimes a fall, no stable footing.
• Effort at work goes long without visible results, "as if into a void."
• Such people often work in atypical fields — art, spiritual practices, freelancing, remote work.
• Their circle consists of varied, unconnected people; there's no "tribe" in the usual sense.

A paradox: people with Kong Wang in the Month often excel precisely in creative and spiritual professions, where "emptiness" is a resource, not an obstacle.

Kong Wang in the Day Branch — a special case

Technically, the Day Branch can't fall into the Kong Wang of its own Day Pillar (it's defined relative to itself). But in rare cases, when we analyze the Day Branch from the perspective of the Year Pillar (some masters do this), Kong Wang in the Day can mean:

• Emotional distance from the spouse, "a marriage without a soul."
• Inner emptiness, depressive tendencies.
• A deep inclination toward spiritual seeking, meditation, philosophy.

Kong Wang in the Hour Pillar — the most important position

Most masters of the classical Ziping school consider Kong Wang in the Hour pillar the most significant and dangerous configuration. The Hour governs:

• Children and the continuation of the family line — the void here often means childlessness or difficult relationships with children.
• The late stage of life (after 50) — it can mean loneliness in old age, the loss of savings.
• Creative legacy — "leaving no trace" in the material sense.
• The soul and spiritual realization — conversely, an "ideal position" for a spiritual teacher.

Here we see Kong Wang's duality: what's bad for the material world is wonderful for the spiritual one.

4 The bright side — what Kong Wang gives its bearer

A good BaZi master will never tell you "you have Kong Wang — that's bad." They'll say: "you have Kong Wang — let's see how to use it correctly."

A capacity for radical transformation. Because Kong Wang "resets" the past, bearers of this star can "reinvent" themselves multiple times over a lifetime — changing careers at 40, starting a new life at 50, moving to another country at 60. For ordinary people, such turns are impossible — they're "attached" to their past. For Kong Wang, it's the natural state.

Immunity to social pressure. Bearers of Kong Wang barely register "social expectations." They don't much care "what people will say," "what's customary," "what's expected." This gives enormous freedom in making unconventional decisions.

Deep compassion. An understanding of the illusory nature of the material world makes such people less greedy, less selfish, more inclined to help others. Many great philanthropists and social workers have an active Kong Wang.

5 The dark side — real dangers

The dark side of Kong Wang can't be ignored either. It's a real factor that, without a conscious approach, can wreck a life.

The inability to accumulate material wealth

The main practical problem of Kong Wang is "resource leakage." Money comes and goes. Career achievements don't compound into cumulative success. Nearly every time, the person has to start almost from zero.

This is especially painful if Kong Wang sits in the Month pillar, which governs wealth through work. A person may earn large sums, but within 5-10 years nothing remains of them.

Emotional emptiness and depression

Bearers of a strong Kong Wang often suffer from existential emptiness. "What's the point of any of this?" is the tormenting question of their life. Without proper spiritual practice or creative fulfillment, this can slide into depression, apathy, and addiction.

Difficulties in relationships

The emotional "non-attachment" of Kong Wang is wonderful for spiritual practice, but agonizing for loved ones. Partners and children of such a person often feel that they're "not here," "not engaged," "indifferent." Marriages break apart precisely because of this.

Losses in activation years

When the Kong Wang branch activates in Da Yun or Liu Nian (especially if it's also in a Chong clash with the Day Master), it's often a year of serious losses — financial, relational, health-related, or of status.

The inability to "settle"

Kong Wang often shows up as an inability to "put down roots" — a constant change of cities, professions, relationships. For some, this is a blessing of freedom; for others, it's an agonizing inability to build anything lasting.

6 Combinations of Kong Wang with other stars

Kong Wang rarely works in isolation. Its effect depends heavily on other stars and combinations in the chart.

Kong Wang + Tian Yi Gui Ren

When "emptiness" combines with the chief noble star, Tian Yi, the void fills with spiritual meaning. This is the classic combination of true spiritual teachers: emptiness creates a "container," and Tian Yi brings wisdom from above into it. Many meditation teachers and high-level monks carry this combination.

Kong Wang + Hua Gai

Hua Gai is the "hermit's star," a pull toward solitude and spiritual seclusion. Combined with Kong Wang, it produces the classic pattern of a monk or mystic. Bearers of this combination often leave secular life for spiritual practice, art, philosophy. In ordinary secular life they seem "strange," but within their niche, they're geniuses.

Kong Wang + Tao Hua

A paradoxical combination: the "peach blossom" of seduction meets the "void" of detachment. This often shows up as a string of passionate but short-lived romances — the person attracts others but doesn't become attached themselves, and relationships "dissolve" within a few months.

Kong Wang + Wang Shen

A dangerous combination. Wang Shen is the "star of death/loss," and Kong Wang is "the void." Together, they amplify the theme of loss, separation, disappointment. This requires conscious spiritual work for transformation.

Kong Wang in the Wealth pillar

When Kong Wang "eats" the Wealth pillar (Cai Xing), it's the classic pattern of the "eternally poor genius." Talented, intelligent, capable people who never grow rich. Money doesn't interest them, and fate answers accordingly.

7 Activation of Kong Wang in Da Yun

When a branch matching your Kong Wang arrives in a Da Yun (a major luck cycle) or in an annual pillar (Liu Nian), the star "lights up" during those years. What does this mean?

Possible events during activation years:

• Financial losses or abrupt restructuring — especially if you're investing large sums in long-term projects during this period.
• Breakups, divorce, the end of a partnership — Kong Wang "empties" the sphere of relationships.
• The loss of loved ones — illness or the passing of parents or older relatives, especially if the Kong Wang activation falls in years relevant to elderly family members.
• An identity crisis — "why am I doing this?", "who am I?", "where am I going?" become central existential questions.
• The opening of a spiritual path — starting meditation, yoga, philosophical inquiry, turning to religion.
• A creative breakthrough — for artists, writers, musicians, this is often a period of great works.
• Emigration, a radical change of residence — a literal "emptying" of the previous life.

How to move through a Kong Wang activation

1. Don't invest major resources in material projects during this period — the risk of loss is high.
2. Go deeper into spiritual or creative practices — this is the "right" channel for Kong Wang's energy.
3. Pay attention to loved ones — if there are worrying signs in a parent's health, don't delay caring for them.
4. Accept losses consciously — let what must go, go. Resistance triples the suffering.
5. Use the period for "clearing" — discard the excess, drop unnecessary obligations, reset the old.

8 Careers and industries for people with an active Kong Wang

Bearers of an active Kong Wang find especially vivid fulfillment in fields where "emptiness" is a resource, not an obstacle.

Spiritual practices and religion

Teachers of meditation, yoga, qigong. Priests, monks, spiritual directors. Kong Wang gives a natural grasp of the idea of "letting go of attachment" and the ability to guide others along that path.

Philosophy and theoretical science

Philosophers, theoretical physicists, mathematicians working in "pure" theory without practical application. Kong Wang is the "empty space of mind" needed for abstract thought.

The fine arts

Abstract painters, poets, experimental musicians, directors of auteur film. Those whose art is "not for the market," but for art's sake. Kong Wang works perfectly here — emptiness is needed for novelty to be born.

Psychotherapy and helping professions

Especially existential psychotherapists, grief specialists, crisis psychologists. Kong Wang gives the ability to sit with another person's emptiness without being afraid of it.

Archaeology, history, the antiques trade

Working with "the past," with "what's gone" — the literal domain of Kong Wang. Archaeologists, restorers, museum staff often have this star active.

Hospices, palliative care, funeral services

Working with death and the dying lies deep in Kong Wang's element. This is difficult work, but people with Kong Wang are precisely the ones able to avoid burnout in it, because they see the boundary between life and death differently.

What to avoid

• Banking, investment, trading — Kong Wang "eats" savings.
• Retail, small business — there's no "ground" underfoot.
• Politics at the state level — Kong Wang holds power poorly.
• A family business built on a long dynastic line — Kong Wang "breaks" lineages.

9 Well-known bearers (archetypal patterns)

Although one cannot claim, without a full birth date, that a specific person has an active Kong Wang, patterns in which this star is likely can be described.

Great spiritual teachers. People whose lives are defined not by "achievement," but by "renouncing the world" and spiritual revelation very often carry a strong Kong Wang. The Buddha, Lao Tzu, many saints across traditions — this is the archetype of Kong Wang.

Avant-garde artists. Creators whose works were ahead of their time and misunderstood by their contemporaries often have Kong Wang in the Month or Hour. Their art "didn't fit" the material world of their era.

"Poet-suicides." A tragic pattern — brilliant creators with deep existential pain who couldn't cope with the void and took their own lives. This is an example of how a strong Kong Wang without a spiritual anchor destroys its bearer.

"Accidental millionaires" who lost everything. People suddenly struck by wealth (an inheritance, a lottery, an early business success) who lost it all just as quickly. Kong Wang "doesn't hold" material things.

Great theoretical scientists. Those who discovered the fundamental laws of nature without aiming for practical application — Einstein, Kant, many mathematicians — often have a strong Kong Wang in the Month pillar.

Long-lived hermits. Paradoxically, among very elderly people living well past 100 in simplicity and solitude, an active Kong Wang is not uncommon. A "lightness" of relation to the world gives longevity.

10 Practical application — how to work with Kong Wang

Knowledge of Kong Wang must translate into concrete life decisions. Here's a step-by-step plan.

Step 1. Determine where your Kong Wang is

Using the table of decades in section 2, find your empty branches. Check all four pillars of your chart, as well as your current Da Yun and year.

Step 2. Determine the strength of the activation

• If Kong Wang is in your natal chart AND in your current Da Yun, the star is working powerfully at all times.
• If it's only in the natal chart, it's a background program, activating in years when the matching branch arrives.
• If it's only in the Da Yun, it's a temporary 10-year "stretch" — it's important to use it consciously.

Step 3. Choose a working strategy

Strategy A — Spiritual integration. Accept that material success isn't your main axis. Develop spiritual, creative, philosophical practices. Find a profession where "emptiness" is a resource.

Strategy B — Compensation. If you want material success, consciously compensate for Kong Wang: build "two layers of protection" for your money (savings + insurance), surround yourself with reliable partners, have a "Plan B" for everything.

Strategy C — Using "emptiness" as an advantage. In negotiations, in strategy, in difficult situations, you can "disappear" — not respond to provocations, not fall for manipulation, stay at "zero point." This is a powerful weapon.

Step 4. Manage your activation years

Knowing when your Kong Wang will activate in the future, prepare in advance:

• Don't plan major financial risks for those years.
• Don't enter marriage or partnership based solely on material calculation.
• Deepen your spiritual or creative practice before the activation.
• Be ready to let go of what must leave.

Step 5. Work with the emotional side

Kong Wang isn't only about external events, but also inner states. A regular practice of meditation, mindfulness, or psychotherapy helps transform "emptiness" from a source of suffering into a source of strength. This isn't a "fix" for the problem — it's a new relationship with the world.

Kong Wang and compatibility

In the analysis of compatibility between two charts, Kong Wang plays an important role:

• If one partner's Day Branch falls into the other's Kong Wang, the relationship is often "emotionally empty," without deep connection.
• If both partners have a strong Kong Wang, it can be either an incredibly harmonious "union of two hermits," or "two ghosts passing through one another."
• If one partner has an active Kong Wang and the other doesn't, it matters that the one without it understands the partner's "different logic" and doesn't demand "ordinary" behavior from them.

Kong Wang is, perhaps, the deepest and most philosophical star in the BaZi system. It reminds us that at the foundation of everything lies emptiness, and that this emptiness isn't frightening — it is, on the contrary, a space of possibility. In every era there have been people who turned their Kong Wang into a source of creativity, wisdom, holiness. And there have been those who, not understanding it, suffered.
