One of them starts three projects in a week and by Friday has forgotten what the first one was for. The other spends the same week going through paperwork, finds a typo in a contract, and quietly resents that everything is "always on the fly". If that sounds like your household and you are a Tiger with a Rooster, do not rush to diagnose yourselves from two animals. But do not wave it away either: there is a concrete mechanism behind this pattern, and BaZi can describe it without horoscope generalities.

The Tiger is the branch 寅 (yín), the first branch of spring: young Wood at the starting line. The Rooster is 酉 (yǒu), the middle of autumn: pure Metal at its peak, fine, polished and used to trimming away the excess. There is no classical relationship between them. They form no 六合 (liù hé, Six Harmony), no 六冲 (liù chōng, Six Clash), no 六害 (liù hài, Six Harm) and no punishment 刑 (xíng). Pairs like this are called neutral: the branches give no ready-made hint, and you have to judge by elements, stems and the rest of the pillars.

This article is about the top layer, the birth year. It gives a general outline but does not replace the charts. How a year sign differs from real compatibility is covered at the end; let us start with the signs themselves.

1 Who they are on their own

Inside 寅 sit three hidden stems: 甲 (jiǎ, the main one, Yang Wood), 丙 (bǐng, Yang Fire) and 戊 (wù, Yang Earth). This is Wood with a reserve of warmth and soil: it does not only grow, it burns with the wish to go somewhere. Hence the famous Tiger initiative. In BaZi this is not a "character trait on the passport" but a quality of the branch: a person with 寅 in the year pillar often grew up in an environment that valued courage, independence and the ability to start from zero.

Inside 酉 there is a single stem, 辛 (xīn, Yin Metal), with no admixture. The branch is called "pure" because there is nothing to dilute its quality. This is precious metal, like jewelry or a surgeon's instrument: small, exact, demanding about conditions. The Rooster likes order, form, a clean line and clear criteria. The Rooster hour is sunset, the time of summing up, and that evening tone is often felt in these people: they tend to check things and lay them out in sequence.

Put them together. Spring against autumn, beginning against completion, impulse against assessment. In general terms the Tiger sets the direction and the Rooster sets the standard. As long as they work on different territories, the couple functions. When both want to run the same territory, friction starts.

2 Elements: Metal against Wood

In the five-element cycle Metal controls Wood (the axe fells the tree). The relationship here is direct: 酉 is Metal, 寅 is Wood. Formally the Rooster is the "controlling" side in this pair. In practice it means the Rooster is inclined by nature to evaluate, correct and prune the Tiger, and the Tiger experiences that as pressure.

It helps to recall the twelve growth phases 十二長生 (shí'èr cháng shēng). Take the Yang stems as a reference (schools count the Yin stems differently, and that is a separate debate). For 庚 (gēng, Yang Metal) the branch 酉 is the phase 帝旺 (dì wàng, "emperor's peak"), the maximum of strength, while 寅 is 絕 (jué, "severance"), where Metal is at its weakest. For 甲 (Yang Wood) the same 寅 is 臨官 (lín guān, "taking office"), mature strength. This is an image rather than a compatibility rule: on its own ground the Tiger is sturdy, and Metal has little to lean on there. That is why the Rooster's pressure is often weaker than it looks from outside: the Tiger does not bend, and that irritates the Rooster.

Add the stems. The Tiger's main stem 甲 is a large, straight tree; the Rooster's main stem 辛 is thin metal. The classical metaphor is "甲 is chopped by the axe 庚", but 辛 is closer to a jeweler's knife: it does not fell the trunk, it cuts the detail. The conflicts of this pair are rarely loud. They live in small reproaches: "not on the list again", "you complicate everything".

3 Love and marriage

In a romance the Tiger usually appears first: noticed, called, proposed. The Rooster watches at the start, and this is not coldness but a habit of checking. For the Rooster, courtship is a reliability test. If the Tiger understands this and does not hurry, the couple moves onto a stable line. If the Tiger takes the caution for a refusal and walks away, the story ends before it begins.

In a long relationship the most valuable thing is a household agreement about who does what. The Tiger has a reserve for big gestures: a trip, a move, a job change, a shared project. The Rooster has a feel for detail: budget, schedule, deadlines, cleanliness. These zones do not overlap. Trouble starts when the Tiger brings improvisation into the household ("let's do it without a plan") or the Rooster begins to "improve" the big decisions ("let's first calculate everything one more time").

What helps in such a union:

If your pair has a strong 桃花 (táo huā, Peach Blossom) or several combinations 合 between other pillars, all of this softens. In such questions the year sign is a background, not a verdict.

4 Friendship

Tiger and Rooster can be friends firmly and without drama, precisely because they share few territories. The Tiger brings ideas and energy, the Rooster can bring them to a presentable state. Friends on this scheme often work like an author and an editor. Conflict arrives when the author is tired of edits and the editor feels unheard.

A good friendship practice is not to split responsibility in half but to write out the sections: who handles the tickets, who the route, who the money. With clear roles a "neutral pair" becomes a convenient one: no attraction pulling toward extremes and no repulsion getting in the way of conversation.

5 Work and a shared business

At work this duo can be strong. The Tiger generates direction and takes on negotiation, risk and launch. The Rooster builds the process, watches quality and keeps the records. If the functions are split this way, the pair covers both halves of the cycle: beginning and completion.

There are three typical problems. The first is tempo. The Tiger wants to decide and move on; the Rooster wants to verify. A written rule solves it: which decisions need a check and which are fine on a spoken word. The second is money. The Rooster tends to save, the Tiger tends to invest. Here a shared budget with a capped allowance for the Tiger's experiments works. The third is recognition. The Rooster rarely asks for thanks, but if the contribution goes unmentioned, resentment accumulates for years.

If you are starting a business together, look beyond the signs. Business roles are read from each partner's Day Master and Ten Gods structure, and the year sign says nothing about that. See the Ten Gods for how those structures work.

6 What the Tiger should do, and what the Rooster should do

If you are the Tiger and the Rooster is next to you, start by showing your plan. Not because the Rooster will forbid anything, but because a plan is the Rooster's way of feeling safe. Three lines in a messenger, "where, when, how much", remove half the complaints. Along the way, get used to finishing small things: the Rooster reads unfinished business as a sign that you cannot be relied on, whereas you most likely just got carried away by the next idea.

If you are the Rooster and the Tiger is next to you, learn to separate assessment from correction. Correction is needed when a mistake is expensive. In other cases it is more useful to say "that turned out well" and stay silent about what could have been better. The Tiger is not touchy, but badly tolerates the feeling of being followed with a ruler, and at some point will stop sharing ideas.

Both of you: do not try to change the partner's tempo, change the schedule instead. The Tiger needs periods of acceleration, the Rooster needs periods of quiet. When a week contains both, the couple stops fighting for the same hour.

7 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

Three scenarios come up more often than others.

"You criticize everything"

The Tiger hears judgment where the Rooster is only clarifying. For the Rooster a clarifying question is a way of being useful. One sentence at the start cures it: "I am not against it, I need to understand." The more specific the question, the less it resembles a complaint.

"You dropped it again"

The Rooster sees an unfinished task as a personal insult to order. For the Tiger an unfinished task is often finished in meaning; interest simply ran out. A shared list of "live" tasks with a named owner helps. While the Tiger is responsible for two tasks rather than nine, they get done.

"We rest differently"

The Tiger wants movement, the Rooster wants order and calm. The solution is alternation: one week "the Tiger's way", one week "the Rooster's way". It sounds primitive, but in practice couples who agree on alternation store up fewer grievances than those who try to find a compromise on the spot every time.

8 Tiger and Rooster in 2027

2027 is 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat year. It begins with 立春 (lì chūn, the Start of Spring) around February 4. The year branch 未 forms no direct relationship with the Tiger 寅 or the Rooster 酉, so neither sign gets a classical "blow" or "gift" from the branch itself. Still, the general backdrop will be noticeable. The stem 丁 is Yin Fire, which is fed by Wood and melts Metal. In plain language: a Tiger usually has more outside fuel for initiatives in such a year, while a Rooster has more "heat" that calls for careful handling. This is a backdrop, not a prediction of events.

The year branch is neutral, but the months of 2027 relate to each sign differently, and those links can be seen in the calendar in advance. Boundaries below are accurate to within one day.

For the Tiger 寅 the calmest stretches are the month 丙午 (June 6 to July 6), where 寅 and 午 make half of the Fire triangle 寅午戌, and the month 辛亥 (November 7 to December 6), where the combination 寅亥合 works (the same pair is also listed under 六破, destruction, but the combination is normally treated as the leading one). Tense points are 乙巳 (May 6 to June 5; 寅巳 is both a harm 害 and part of the punishment 寅巳申) and especially 戊申 (August 8 to September 7): 寅申冲, a direct clash. The month 壬寅 (February 4 to March 5) is the Tiger's "own" month, the branch repeats, and initiative comes more easily in those weeks.

For the Rooster 酉 the picture is almost mirrored. Supportive are the month 甲辰 (April 5 to May 5, the combination 辰酉合) and two months of the Metal triangle 巳酉丑: 乙巳 (May 6 to June 5) and 癸丑 (January 6 to February 3, 2028). Difficult are 癸卯 (March 6 to April 4, 卯酉冲), 庚戌 (October 8 to November 6, 酉戌害) and 壬子 (December 7 to January 5, 子酉破). The Rooster's own month 己酉 (September 8 to October 7) is ambivalent: 酉酉 is among the self-punishments 自刑, and fussiness toward oneself and others can run high in those weeks.

What follows for the couple. In May interests match poorly: the month helps the Rooster and hinders the Tiger. In late summer (戊申) the Tiger is the more irritable one, in autumn (己酉, 庚戌) the Rooster. If you know this in advance, it is easier not to take the other's tension personally and not to schedule heavy family talks in those weeks. This is not event prediction: a month sets the weather, and how it lands on a particular person is visible only in the full chart.

The practical conclusion is simple: 2027 creates no new classical links between you, so whatever happens will grow out of your charts and your behavior. If you want to see how the year sits on your own pillars, look at the annual context for your chart. Without a birth date and time, no "forecast for Tigers" can tell you more than the general atmosphere.

9 Why the year sign is only the top layer

The birth year is one branch out of the eight characters of a chart. It describes the "ancestors' pillar": the environment a person came from and, to some extent, the outward manner. The character of a couple is determined by other things, and these are the five checks a practitioner makes when both charts are available.

  1. The Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ). A Tiger and a Rooster by year may have completely different Day Masters. If, say, one Day Master is Wood and the other Fire, Wood feeds Fire, and that link works regardless of birth year.
  2. The day branches. The day branch is the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fūqī gōng). If your day branches are in Six Harmony or Three Harmony, the weight on that side can outweigh the neutrality of the year branches.
  3. Elemental balance and what each chart lacks. A partner who brings the needed element feels "one of us", even when the signs formally do not match.
  4. Links between all pillars: combinations, clashes, punishments and harms across every pairing, not only in the year.
  5. Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). Compatibility in time: one partner may be in an upswing while the other is in a pause.

We do not name a compatibility percentage, because the system has none. What exists is a map of a couple's strong and weak places, and it cannot be drawn from year signs.

An honest caveat. Everything above about the Tiger and the Rooster describes a general pattern. A specific couple of these signs can be very harmonious or very hard, depending on the other six characters in the charts. Do not make decisions about marriage, moving or a shared business by year signs.

10 Frequently asked questions

Are Tiger and Rooster compatible?

There is no classical branch relationship between 寅 (yín) and 酉 (yǒu), so the pairing is considered neutral. By element, Metal (Rooster) controls Wood (Tiger), which in daily life shows up as the Rooster's habit of correcting and evaluating. It works best when the roles are divided. The final picture depends on all eight characters of both charts.

Who leads in a Tiger and Rooster couple?

By element the controlling side is the Rooster, but the Tiger's 寅 is a strong position for Wood, so in practice neither dominates. A split of "the Tiger owns direction, the Rooster owns process" works better than a fight over general leadership.

What does 2027 hold for Tiger and Rooster?

The year branch 未 (wèi) forms no combination, clash or harm with either 寅 or 酉. The Fire Goat year 丁未 (dīng-wèi) gives a general backdrop: Fire is fed by Wood and melts Metal. That is atmosphere, not a prediction of events, and it lands differently on different charts.

Is Tiger and Rooster a good match for marriage?

The birth-year sign is too small a unit for that verdict. For marriage, practitioners look at the Spouse Palaces (the day branches), the Day Masters, the elemental balance and both partners' Luck Pillars. Couples with "awkward" year signs often do well when the other pillars support them.

Can a Tiger work with a Rooster?

Yes, if the functions are divided: the Tiger launches and negotiates, the Rooster runs the process and the quality. Trouble comes from tempo and from money, so it helps to write down decision rules and a shared budget in advance.
