You've probably heard this from a friend, from a therapist, or said it to yourself: "I'm a magnet for the wrong people." At first everything seems different — different faces, different stories. And then, months later, you suddenly recognize a familiar pain. The same coldness. The same unavailability. The same criticism. The same ending.
In the BaZi system (八字, bā zì — "eight characters"), this isn't described with the word "bad luck." It's described with the word pattern. Your chart is eight characters, four pillars: the year, month, day and hour of birth. And within those eight characters is already encoded the logic of who you choose, who you're drawn to, and why specifically to that type of person. The good news: the pattern can be seen. And what you can see stops controlling you blindly.
1 💔 This isn't chance — it's a chart pattern
When something repeats three, four, five times, it's no longer a coincidence. Psychology calls this a "script." BaZi calls it the configuration of the partner star. Both say the same thing: inside you there's a stable setting that, time after time, leads you to the same type of person.
In the chart there's a specific character (or several) responsible for your partner — we'll break it down below. If that character is under pressure, surrounded by conflicting signs, weakened, or, conversely, overabundant — your relationships will keep reproducing exactly that dynamic. Not because "it's simply fated," but because you unconsciously seek the energy that feels familiar to you. Even if that energy causes pain.
2 ⚔️ The partner star under attack: 沖 and 刑 on 正官 and 正財
First, the foundation. In your chart there's a "partner star" — one of the Ten Gods (十神, shí shén — "ten deities") symbolizing your spouse:
Now imagine this partner star in your chart sits next to a sign that attacks it. In BaZi there are two main "strikes":
- ⚡ 沖 (chōng — "clash") — a head-on confrontation between two earthly branches, like two trains headed for each other. When 沖 strikes the partner star, relationships are unstable: a turbulent start, a sharp breakup, emotional swings, "on-again, off-again."
- ⚡ 刑 (xíng — "punishment") — a more insidious, hidden conflict. Not an open quarrel, but slow mutual erosion: grievances, resentment, accumulated irritation, a feeling of "being used."
If your 正官 or 正財 was born "under attack" from 沖 or 刑, you'll often be drawn precisely to the people who reproduce this inner turbulence. A calm, reliable person seems "boring" to you — while someone who triggers old pain feels "real." This is the mechanics of the pattern.
3 🌹 For women: 傷官 — the pull toward "problematic" men
This is one of the most common and most painful configurations in women's charts. 傷官 (shāng guān — "Hurting Officer") is the Ten God responsible for creativity, rebellion, sharpness of mind, expressiveness... and for a direct attack on the husband star 正官.
Among the five elements, 傷官 literally suppresses 正官. Energetically this means: a woman with a strong 傷官 intuitively doesn't respect the "proper," stable, rule-abiding man. She's drawn to those who are dangerous, unavailable, talented-but-destructive, charismatic-but-unreliable. To "bad boys," to geniuses with a dark side, to those who "need saving."
And the other side of the same coin is criticism. 傷官 grants a sharp tongue and the highest standards. Even when a good person turns up, a woman with active 傷官 unconsciously starts "improving" him: pointing out flaws, comparing, devaluing. The partner feels like he's never enough — and leaves. The pattern closes the loop: "all men are either bad or weak."
4 🎭 Too many partner stars: 官杀混杂 and "emotional whiplash"
Sometimes the problem isn't that the partner star is missing or under attack, but that there's too much of it. In a woman's chart this is called 官杀混杂 (guān shā hùn zá — "mixing of officers and killers"): both 正官 (the proper husband) and 七殺 (the vivid, harsh man) are present at once, and there are several of them.
What does this bring in real life? A constant presence of multiple candidates. An inability to settle on one. Inner tossing back and forth: "reliable and predictable, or passionate and dangerous." Relationships in which you're always doubting, always comparing, always feeling that "there's something better out there." Emotional whiplash — one moment up, the next down.
For men, the equivalent is an excess of 財 (cái — "wealth," the woman star): many infatuations, difficulty with fidelity, a sense that "I can't choose just one." In both cases the chart creates not scarcity but the chaos of abundance — and it's exactly that chaos that gets in the way of building depth.

日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day"), also known as the Day Master, is you yourself — the central character of the whole chart, the heavenly stem of your birth day. The strength or weakness of your 日主 determines how "stable" you are inside a relationship.
When 日主 is weak — meaning the chart has little support for its own element and a lot of pressuring, controlling elements — a person subconsciously looks for someone who will "hold," "lead," "decide." At first this looks like protection and strength: "he's so confident," "it's so calming with her, she takes care of everything." But the line between support and control is thin.
A weak 日主 is especially vulnerable when the chart has a strong 官殺 (guān shā — "officers-and-killers," the energy of control). Then you're literally drawn to dominating, jealous, controlling partners — because that energy is energetically "familiar" to you and feels like the norm. You can go years without noticing that the relationship you call "passionate" is, in fact, suppressive.
6 🕳️ The partner star "in the grave": 墓 and emotional unavailability
There's another subtle but very telling configuration. In BaZi there's a concept called 墓 (mù — "grave," "storage") — a special state of an earthly branch in which an element is, in effect, "hidden," "buried," locked inside.
When the partner star falls "into the grave" 墓, that's about emotional unavailability. Either you attract partners who are closed off, cold, unable to express feelings, who "hide" themselves. Or you yourself become that kind of person in relationships — loving, but not showing it; needing, but not letting anyone in; present in body, but "buried" inside.
This is often about people who learned early not to show vulnerability. On the outside — self-sufficiency and calm. Inside — a locked safe of feelings whose key has been lost. Such people's partners complain: "it's like I'm knocking on a closed door." And the person themselves genuinely doesn't understand what's wanted of them — because they do love, it's just "in the grave."
7 🔄 How 大運 changes the pattern: hope for a turning point
This is exactly why BaZi isn't a sentence — it's navigation. The birth chart is static, but 大運 (dà yùn — "great luck," the 10-year Luck Pillars) keeps changing the picture. Every ten years a new decade arrives with its own heavenly stem and earthly branch, and it rewrites the balance of your stars.
This means concrete things:
- 🌅 A decade that strengthens a weak 日主 makes you inwardly steadier — and you stop being drawn to controlling people. The same people who used to seem "strong" now look "suffocating."
- 🌅 A decade that tames 傷官 (bringing 正印 or 財) reduces its destructiveness — the criticism quiets down, and a good person finally becomes "interesting."
- 🌅 A decade that "unseals the grave" 墓 of the partner star opens up emotional availability — and closeness arrives that wasn't there for decades.
- 🌅 A decade that brings a "clean" partner star free of 沖/刑 attacks gives you a "window" for healthy relationships — marriages often happen precisely in such periods.
That's exactly why two people with similarly "difficult" charts can live very different love stories: it all depends on which decade they're currently in, and whether they're aware of it. The turning point isn't abstract — it has dates.
8 ✨ How to break the cycle: awareness + the right timing
Let's put it all together. The "wrong partners" pattern breaks at the intersection of two things — inner work and time.
And above all — be gentle with yourself. You aren't "broken," and you aren't "cursed in love." You've simply been following a setting for a long time that no one ever explained to you. The chart isn't a diagnosis of "hopeless." It's a mirror in which, for the first time, you can see why you choose the way you choose. And to see it is to gain the ability to choose differently.
What about your specific partner?
Compare your chart with the chart of the person beside you: where you have harmony, and where there's a karmic lesson. A compatibility analysis will show whether this is your "wrong partner" pattern again — or finally "the one."
