"Let's go right now." "Where?" "Doesn't matter, we'll figure it out there." If you recognize your couple in that exchange, you may be a Tiger and a Horse. These two branches are counted among the most mobile and most adventurous in the circle. The Tiger 寅 (yín) breaks out of winter; the Horse 午 (wǔ) stands at the summer zenith. Between them lies a classical link called the Fire Three Harmony 三合 (sān hé) 寅午戌, and it is to this link that the pair owes its reputation as "a couple that is never boring."
The combination, however, is incomplete. A genuine 三合 needs three branches, and we have two: the Dog 戌 (xū) is missing. The classics regard such pairs as a half-triple, and it already gives a noticeable attraction, though weaker than the full combination. Curiously, the third branch can arrive at any moment: from the third pillar of a chart, from a year, from a month. That is why the signs in such a pair only sketch a general scenario.
Below we look at how the link is built, at love, work and conflicts, and then at 2027. That year is special for the Horse and hardly touches the Tiger. As always, the birth-year sign is one layer out of the eight characters of a chart.
1 What the Three Harmony 寅午戌 is
In the classics a Three Harmony 三合 binds three branches around the circle at intervals of four steps: 寅 → 午 → 戌. One branch marks the birth of an element, the second its flowering, the third its completion, the storehouse. For Fire it looks like this: 寅 is the birth of Fire (the Tiger holds 丙, Yang Fire, though on the outside the Tiger is Wood), 午 is the peak of Fire, 戌 is its storehouse. Fire begins in spring, reaches its zenith in summer and goes into storage in autumn.
For a couple this means the following. The Tiger and the Horse share a "fire" program: enthusiasm, a need for recognition, quick engagement in an undertaking. The Tiger launches; the Horse brings things to a bright result. The third link, the Dog 戌, is responsible for storage and consolidation; it turns a flash into a stable structure. While it is absent, the pair tends to live in bursts: brightly, fast, sometimes wastefully.
| Stage | Branch | Function in the triple | In the pair? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birth | 寅 Tiger | launch, spark | yes |
| Flowering | 午 Horse | peak, visibility, result | yes |
| Storehouse | 戌 Dog | consolidation, loyalty, holding | no, a third is needed |
For more on how to read such triples, see the article on the Three Harmony 三合.
2 Elements and hidden stems
If we look at the substance of the branches, the Tiger is Wood with 甲 in the main position, as well as 丙 and 戊. The Horse is pure Fire with 丁 (dīng, Yin Fire) as the main stem and 己 (jǐ, Yin Earth) as the second. Wood gives birth to Fire in the cycle, and here a complement is already formed: the Tiger supports the Horse with fuel, and the Horse answers with light. Related are the 丙 in the Tiger and the 丁 in the Horse: two faces of Fire, the big open blaze and the living flame of a lamp. They sense each other well.
There is only one danger: excess. If the charts of the pair already hold a lot of Fire and Wood, the pair is inclined to "burn out." Overheated charts need Water, which cools, and Earth, which takes away surplus heat; in daily life that means rest, sleep, quiet and routine. If, on the other hand, there is little Fire in the charts, the Tiger and the Horse become valuable partners, since they bring the warmth that was missing. Which situation is yours is decided not by the sign but by the balance of all the elements, and that question is answered by calculating the full chart.
3 The character of the pair and love
In relationships the Tiger and the Horse are described as "passion and speed." The pair grows close fast, becomes vivid to the people around it fast, and passes the getting-to-know-you stage fast. The Tiger is bolder at the start; the Horse is more honest in her emotions: if something does not please her, it is visible at once. Shared interests are often connected with movement: travel, sport, events, big company.
The problems begin where patient work on the relationship is needed. Both are a little impatient, both dislike explaining the obvious, both flare up fast. This is not war but flashes: short, loud and shallow. After them, as a rule, joint action is needed (a walk, a trip, a shared project), not a long conversation. The conversation is better postponed to the next day.
Another trait is the pull toward freedom. In the classics the Tiger and the Horse are among the "moving" signs, and the branch 寅 serves as the Traveling Horse 驛馬 (yì mǎ) for people with 申, 子 or 辰 in the chart; we wrote about this in the article on the Traveling Horse star. It makes sense for the partners to talk through how much time each spends apart and to agree not to count separate time as disloyalty to the union. Binding them to each other by "permanent presence" will not work and is not needed.
If 寅 and 午 stand in the day branches of both, the pair gets the incomplete triple right in the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮. Then the effect is stronger: attraction from the first meeting, but also a tendency to instability until a third branch appears in the couple's life (say a Dog in a year, in the hour or in some Luck Pillar 大運). More on how masters read this in marriage in BaZi.
For those who are only getting acquainted, the pair of signs hints at the scenario of the first months. The Tiger and the Horse usually move quickly from liking to joint plans, and it is useful to slow down at the stage when you have not yet seen each other in a bad mood, in illness, or short of money. It is in hard moments that you find out whether the pair has that very "Dog," that is, the ability to stay together without bright signals. Give yourselves half a year without loud decisions, and the picture will become noticeably clearer.
4 Friendship and work
As a working pair the Tiger and the Horse look like an excellent launch team: both take things on easily, both speak convincingly, both can light up the people around them. It shows best in projects that call for visibility, publicity and energy: marketing, events, sales, creative studios, sport, media.
The weak point is finishing. Fire loves the start and the finale and dislikes the middle. So the pair needs a third participant who keeps attention on details, keeps the books and reminds everyone of deadlines. This is the "Dog" in a figurative sense: a person for whom loyalty to the work matters more than the impression. If there is no such person on the team, it helps to introduce outside mechanisms: a schedule, a task table, a check every two weeks.
Money in such a pair is better kept separate, at least as two budget lines. Fire is wasteful, and a shared wallet without rules easily becomes a source of reproaches. More on how to read business compatibility from charts in the article on business partners.
Find out whether your pair has the third branch
The birth-year sign shows only two members of the triple. A Couple Compatibility Reading looks at all the branches of both charts and says whether the combination actually closes.

Since the missing link matters so much, it is useful to know where it comes from. The first option is the chart. Look into the four pillars of each partner: the Dog 戌 can stand in the year, month, day or hour branch. If one partner has it, the triple in the pair is closed, and the Tiger–Horse attraction gets a foundation. The second option is time. The Dog arrives in the large periods 大運 or in the yearly pillars, and in 2027 in the month 庚戌 from 8 October to 6 November. The third option is people: a shared friend, a mentor, a reliable helper in the business takes on the "storehouse" function.
It is important not to give this a magical meaning. The storehouse 戌 is a function: holding, loyalty, bookkeeping, routine. If the pair itself builds these things into life (a shared budget, rituals, a clear schedule), the effect is the same. The classics promise nothing; they simply show what may be structurally missing.
6 Conflicts and ways to defuse them
Hot tempers on both sides. A cooling-off rule: after a flare-up, a pause of at least an hour, preferably with physical activity. You can return to the subject the next day.
A struggle for leadership. Both are used to the role of "first." Divide the zones: who leads in daily life, who in career, who decides about trips. Without a written list you will still find surprises.
Trouble finishing. Agree on finish lines in advance: a date, a criterion of readiness, who checks.
A lack of calm. Build "empty" days into the schedule, with no plans and no people. This is not boredom but cooling the system.
Publicity of the relationship. Do not take quarrels out in public; the Tiger and the Horse are sensitive to reputation and tolerate public criticism from a partner badly.
7 2027: the Horse in the Goat year, with the Tiger beside her
The year 2027 is 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat; it opens around 4 February (立春), and Tai Sui 太歲 is 未. For the Tiger there are no direct links, so it is a neutral year. The Horse, however, receives two links at once: the Six Harmony 六合 午未 and the Directional Combination 三會 巳午未 (Fire, summer), though incomplete, without the Snake 巳. The classics call 午未 "the Sun and the Moon" and regard it as a friendly link: it is easier for the Horse this year to find support, cooperation and shared undertakings. Do not expect an automatic effect: a 合 does not always "transform" the element; often it simply holds the sides together.
The Horse finds herself this year in one of the warmest positions among the signs, and the Tiger beside her gets an indirect gain: in the couple it is felt as a shared lift. At the same time the year's stem 丁 adds Fire to an already hot pair, so the theme of overheating is more relevant in 2027 than usual. More on her year in 2027 for the Horse.
| Month in 2027 | What happens in the pair |
|---|---|
| 乙巳, 6 May – 5 Jun | For the Horse the Snake arrives: 巳午未 closes into a full seasonal combination of Fire. For the Tiger, 寅巳 gives a harm and half of a punishment. |
| 丙午, 6 Jun – 6 Jul | The Horse's month: she has 午午 (self-punishment 自刑), the Tiger has the half-triple 寅午戌. The peak of heat; protect your sleep and routine. |
| 丁未, 7 Jul – 7 Aug | The month's 未 strengthens 午未 for the Horse; a calm period for shared affairs. |
| 戊申, 8 Aug – 7 Sep | For the Tiger, the clash 寅申: trips, changes of plan. The Horse is neutral. |
| 庚戌, 8 Oct – 6 Nov | The Dog 戌 arrives: 寅午戌 assembles fully, if both signs are present in the charts. A convenient window for closeness and joint decisions. |
| 壬子, 7 Dec 2027 – 5 Jan 2028 | The clash 子午 for the Horse, neutral Water for the Tiger. Do not quarrel over trifles. |
| 癸丑, 6 Jan – 3 Feb 2028 | For the Horse, the harm 丑午; neutral for the Tiger. Better to pass the tail of the year without abrupt steps. |
Fold the table into one line and you get a year with a hot center. May, June and July are full for the Horse: the summer combination closes, her branch doubles, the union 午未 stands beside her. This is when she is invited, offered things and praised, and the temptation to agree to everything at once is very great. The Tiger's role in these months is to remind her about sleep and days off, although by nature he likes to drive things himself. In August the situation reverses: 戊申 clashes with 寅, and now it is the Tiger who wants to drop everything and redo it, while the Horse is better off lending a shoulder and not pouring on oil. October, with the arrival of the Dog 戌, is the most collected month of the pair: a good time to sum up, sort out the shared money and agree on the next year. December and January call for caution with words from the Horse: the clash 子午 and the harm 丑午 most often show themselves in things said in the heat of the moment.

8 Why the birth-year sign gives no answer
Two Horses can be completely different. A Horse with the Day Master 壬 (Yang Water) carries a sea inside and puts out her own fire: a quiet, thoughtful person with a fiery exterior. A Horse with the Day Master 丙 is a genuine flame. Beside a Tiger the first gets along calmly, and the second throws a fair. It is the same with Tigers: a Tiger with the Day Master 甲 is direct and stubborn, while a Tiger with the Day Master 癸 is quiet inside, observant and far more patient than his sign promises. The difference is not in the signs.
So the real assessment goes through the five checks of the compatibility guide: Day Masters; day branches as Spouse Palaces; the needed elements of each chart; relationship stars; Luck Pillars 大運. If, for example, the partners' Day Masters are 丙 and 辛, a stem combination 丙辛合 forms, which gives a strong personal attraction regardless of the year branches. If the pair diverges on one of the layers, nothing in the birth-year signs will show it. And conversely, a pair with "ordinary" signs can turn out remarkably well coordinated. 9 Frequently asked questions
Are the Tiger and the Horse a good match?
There is an incomplete Fire Three Harmony 寅午戌 between them: the attraction is there, but without the third branch 戌 the pair stays at the level of an inclination. The final conclusion comes from comparing the full charts.
What is a half-triple?
It is a situation in which two of the three branches of a Three Harmony are present. It is weaker than a full 三合, but it shows a direction and can "close" when the third branch appears in a chart, a period or a year.
What makes 2027 special for the Horse?
The Horse receives the harmony 午未 and an incomplete seasonal combination 巳午未, which closes in the month 乙巳 (6 May to 5 June). This is a favorable general background, but its weight depends on the rest of the chart.
How do you keep a relationship going when both are hot-tempered?
Cooling-off rules, separate time for each, distributed zones of responsibility and rituals for finishing things. Everything else is a matter of the individual chart.
Does the pair need a Dog?
The Dog 戌 closes the triple and gives stability. It may be a person on the team or a branch in a chart; in 2027 the month 庚戌 (from 8 October) brings it.
