1 What the Year of the Horse 午 means
When someone says "I was born in the Year of the Horse," they mean the chart's year earthly branch is 午 (wǔ — Horse). This is the seventh of twelve branches, and one of the strongest. Unlike the "storage" signs (Dragon, Goat), the Horse is a cardinal branch, a pure concentration of a single element at its peak.
In classical BaZi, the Year branch belongs to the pillar of ancestors and family — it describes "where you came from": the energy of your family, the first 16 years of life, the social environment of childhood. If your Year branch is the Horse, your family carries a "fiery" imprint: energetic, noticeable, passionate, sometimes quick-tempered.
But it's important to understand: this is only the background. The actual personality unfolds through the day of birth — that's where the Day Master, "you yourself," sits. That's why two "Year of the Horse" people can be complete opposites if they have different Day Masters.
2 The Horse's hidden stems 藏干
The real depth of any earthly branch is its hidden stems (藏干 (cáng gān — "hidden heavenly stems")). These are heavenly stems "packed" inside the branch, revealing its true nature. On the surface it's "the Horse," but a specific combination of elements hides inside.
Inside the Horse 午, two stems are hidden:
- 丁 (dīng — Yin Fire) — the primary, dominant stem. This is "candle" Fire: bright, warming, glowing from within. It's exactly what makes the Horse so "fiery."

When a stem related to a hidden one appears in the chart, "rooting" occurs (通根, tōng gēn — "the root reaching into the branch"). 3 Character: the year layer only
Let's repeat the caveat: what follows is not a personality portrait, but the influence of specifically the year Horse branch. Personality is read from the Day Master. But as a background layer, the Horse in the year adds recognizable traits.
What the year branch 午 brings
- Energy and movement. The Horse can't stand stagnation. The Fire 丁 (dīng) inside gives a constant inner "burning," a drive toward action, sport, travel.

7 Strengths and weaknesses
At the level of the year layer, the Horse gives a characteristic set of strengths and vulnerabilities. Let's emphasize once again: these are tendencies of the branch, not a diagnosis of personality.
