The Horse and the Monkey look like a pair made for travel. Both signs are mobile, curious, fond of novelty and bad at putting up with monotony. At a party they find each other by their laughter and energy, at work by the speed of their thinking. They talk fast, think fast and usually take offense only briefly.
But in the table of branch links there is no combination, no clash and no harm between 午 and 申: the pair is neutral. What, then, keeps them together or pulls them apart? The answer lies in the elements and the hidden stems. The Horse's Fire controls the Monkey's Metal, and deep inside the branches there is an unexpected link, 丁壬合, that changes the whole picture.
We will sort out what works in this combination, where it lets the pair down, and how 2027, the year of the Fire Goat, which is arranged differently for each of the two signs, lies on it.
1 Why there are no classical links, and what it means
In BaZi the main interactions between branches are of six kinds: Six Harmony 六合, Three Harmony 三合, clash 沖, harm 害, punishment 刑 and destruction 破. For 午 and 申 there is no entry on that list. Between them, as practitioners say, "there is no direct link."
Neutrality means the relationship has no preset scenario, neither favorable nor tense. We see only what comes from the people themselves, from their elements and from the other pillars of the chart. This is freedom and responsibility at once: the partners cannot refer either to "fate" or to "incompatibility of signs."
The Monkey 申 also plays a special role for the Horse: it is its Traveling Horse 驛馬 (yì mǎ). For people from the group 寅午戌 (Tiger, Horse, Dog), the branch 申 is the star of movement: trips, relocations, change of surroundings. That is why next to a Monkey the Horse often feels a need to move and to change the familiar. More in the material on the star Traveling Horse 驛馬.
Fire and Metal: the tension of control
The Horse 午 is Fire, the Monkey 申 is Metal. In the controlling cycle Fire melts Metal. If we look only at this layer, the Horse is "senior": it sets the conditions that the Monkey has to adapt to. Is that good? It all depends on how control is used. Fire applied skillfully turns ore into a tool. Fire applied crudely leaves the metal deformed.
In daily life it may look like this. The Horse offers an idea, the Monkey finds a weak spot in it and suggests an optimization. The Horse takes that as criticism, the Monkey as help. The pair lives in a constant dialogue in which one "ignites" and the other "polishes." If both accept the roles, the cooperation is very productive. If not, there are mutual jabs.
| Branch | Hidden stems 藏干 | Role in the pair |
|---|---|---|
| 午 Horse | 丁 (Yin Fire, main), 己 (Yin Earth) | Warmth, recognition, public life; Earth 己 as support |
| 申 Monkey | 庚 (Yang Metal, main), 壬 (Yang Water), 戊 (Yang Earth) | Agility, calculation, resourcefulness; Water 壬 as "cooling" |
2 The secret thread: 丁壬合
The most interesting thing is found inside the branches. 午 hides the stem 丁 (Yin Fire), and 申 hides the stem 壬 (Yang Water). These two stems form the combination 丁壬合 (dīng-rén hé), one of the five Heavenly Stem combinations. The classics call it a "union of attraction": the sides are drawn to each other and find each other interesting although their characters differ.
An important qualification: this concerns hidden stems, which do not come to the surface of a chart unless they are expressed in the Heavenly Stems. So the link works as an undercurrent of attraction rather than as an open union. It is noticed most often as a feeling of "something holds us together, although we are so different."
Note the reverse side as well. Water 壬 controls Fire 丁. So attraction here sits next to control: one minute the partner feels interesting and desirable, the next like someone who "puts you out." That is typical of combinations in which controlling elements take part. More on hidden stems is in the material on hidden stems 藏干.
The practical outcome: this pair has a quiet mutual interest. If it shows up, do not lose it: notice what exactly attracts you in the partner. When the feeling arises while you are in the middle of a quarrel, remember that the attraction has not gone anywhere, it is just covered by the present conflict.
3 Love and marriage
In a relationship the Horse and the Monkey are a pair of bright emotions and frequent changes. The beginning is usually easy: they talk a lot, laugh and dream up plans. The Horse captivates with directness and warmth, the Monkey with wit and resourcefulness. The first months resemble an adventure.
With time, a difference is revealed. The Horse is straightforward and emotional: it says what it feels and expects the same. The Monkey leans toward cunning, maneuver and irony, and sometimes hides its feelings behind a joke. The Horse perceives that as dishonesty, the Monkey as normal protection. Distrust arises easily here, although neither side wants to deceive.
An agreement about openness in what matters helps: when it is a question of feelings, money and plans for the future, jokes and evasions are set aside. For both sides that is a hard discipline, but it works.
Remember that the real picture of a relationship is determined by the day branch, the Spouse Palace. A Horse with 子 on the day branch and a Horse with 卯 on the day branch behave differently in marriage. More in the article on marriage in BaZi.

The Couple Compatibility Reading ($14.90) sets two whole charts side by side: Day Masters, day branches, useful elements and relationship stars.
Couple Compatibility Reading · $14.904 Friendship
The friendship of the Horse and the Monkey is built on shared interests and movement. They like to travel, meet people and try the unusual. It is not dull for the two on a train, in a cafe or at an exhibition. The friendship often begins with a shared activity and then grows into close ties.
The weak spot is competition in small things and differing views on promises. The Horse treats an agreement as an agreement, while the Monkey treats it as a working version open to revision. That causes hurt: "but you promised." An easy solution is to clarify how firm it is: "is this a promise or a plan?"
5 Work and business
In the business sphere this pair can be very effective. The Horse is the public face, negotiator and motivator of the team. The Monkey is the tactician, the technical mind, a master of finding workarounds. In sales, marketing, event organization, startups and consulting, they can move quickly and adapt to circumstances.
- Strength: speed, adaptability, resourcefulness.
- Weakness: both tend to change the plan on the fly, and the work easily loses structure.
- Risk: different attitudes to formal obligations. The Horse builds its reputation on its word, the Monkey on results.
- What helps: written agreements, fixed dates for revising plans, an "earth" person on the team.
For business unions, see the material on business compatibility.
Roles in the pair: who is responsible for what in practice
A pair with neutral branches gains when roles are distributed consciously. Here is a typical arrangement that works well for the Horse and the Monkey if neither has special contradictions in the chart.
| Sphere | Horse | Monkey |
|---|---|---|
| Dealing with people | First contact, public speaking | Details of negotiations, nuances of contracts |
| Plans | Idea and direction | Method of realization and a fallback |
| Money | Big spending, investing in people | Optimization, finding favorable terms |
| Home life | Organizing events and trips | Technical questions, repairs, gadgets |
This scheme is not dogma: swap the rows to suit yourselves. The main thing is that each person knows what is in their charge and does not take the other's interference as distrust.
6 How the pair may develop
A neutral pair can go different ways, and it is useful to understand how they look.
The "adventure" path. The two choose a mobile life: moves, travel, changing projects. The 驛馬 link supports this variant, and the pair gets what it needs, which is movement. It works as long as both are ready to live without hard anchors. If one wants to stop, a crisis follows.
The "team" path. The pair turns into a working duet: a common cause, common goals, a division of roles. The personal relationship is fed by the project's successes. The danger is that the work will eat the personal side, and feelings will be remembered only on vacation.
The "parallel lives" path. Both are busy with their own affairs and meet at weekends. The neutrality of the branches allows such independence, but it requires trust and regular checks, "are we still together?" Without them the pair gradually drifts apart without drama.
Which path becomes yours is determined not by the year signs but by the wishes of the people and their charts. The sign shows only possibilities, from which you choose.
7 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them
- Directness against maneuver. The Horse speaks bluntly, the Monkey goes around. The solution: agree on what is discussed without detours.
- A promise and a "working version." The solution: clarify at once how firm the agreement is.
- A fight for attention. Both like to be at the center. The solution: take turns in company, giving the other the stage.
- Control. The Horse may press, the Monkey may slip away from pressure. The solution: clear zones of responsibility and a right of veto for each.
- Boredom. Pairs with this tempo need new impressions. The solution: joint projects, travel, learning. A routine in which there is nothing to discuss destroys faster than quarrels do.
8 The Horse and Monkey pair in 2027
2027 is the year 丁未 (the Fire Goat), beginning around 4 February 2027 (立春, lì chūn). The branch 未 is the Tai Sui 太歲.
For the Horse 午 the branch 未 forms the Six Harmony 午未合 and belongs to the Directional Combination 巳午未. It is a supportive backdrop: people find it easier to meet you halfway, agreements come more easily, and more warmth and help may appear in the surroundings.
For the Monkey 申 there is no direct link with 未: no combination, no clash. The year is neutral. Interestingly, the year stem 丁 reaches toward the hidden 壬 in 申 (丁壬合): a subtle undercurrent that may feel like a heightened interest in the themes of the year, but creates neither bright events nor problems. The Earth of 未 generates Metal, so the backdrop for the Monkey is rather soft.
For the pair this is an uneven year. The Horse is calmer and has it easier, while the Monkey moves in its ordinary mode. So it is important not to take the Horse's lift for a lift of the pair as a whole: the Monkey may feel that the partner is "flying" without it. Say this aloud and share the year's opportunities.
The months worth attention are 丙午 (6 June to 6 July 2027), the month of the Horse, the peak of its rise, and 戊申 (8 August to 7 September 2027), the month of the Monkey, when its own branch is most active. The dates are approximate, give or take a day. This is a general backdrop, not a forecast of events. More in the materials on the Horse and the Monkey in 2027.
What to do if you are already together
If the Horse and the Monkey are already in a relationship or a shared business, begin not with an analysis of the signs but with three practical questions. What in our communication charges us both? What regularly irritates, and is it about the person or about the situation? Which decisions do we make quickly, and which would we like to make more slowly? The answers will show where the branches and elements really work, and where you yourselves hold the pair in a familiar rut.
After that it is useful to build both charts and look at the day branches and Day Masters. It often turns out that the cause of friction lies nowhere near where it was sought: not in the Fire and Metal of the signs but, say, in a clash of palaces or in the same excess of one element.
9 Why the year sign is only the top layer
We have spoken of the year branches, but a real chart has four of them, and four stems too. A Horse with Day Master 甲 (Yang Wood) and a Horse with Day Master 癸 (Yin Water) are two different people. A Monkey with Day Master 庚 (Yang Metal) and a Monkey with Day Master 丁 (Yin Fire) likewise.
A serious assessment checks five layers.
- Day Masters 日主: how the elements of the two relate.
- Day branches, the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮: combination, clash, punishment or harm.
- Useful Gods 用神: what each gives the other.
- Relationship stars: Peach Blossom 桃花, and the stars of marriage and solitude.
- Luck Pillars 大運: synchronicity of the next ten years.
The result is a map of the pair, not a percentage. The method is described in detail in the compatibility guide. To get to know the character of the signs, see the materials on the year of the Horse and the year of the Monkey. You can build your own chart for free.

Full Couple Compatibility · $29.9010 Frequently asked questions
Are the Horse and the Monkey a compatible pair?
There are no direct classical links between 午 and 申, so the pair is neutral. By the elements Fire controls Metal, but among the hidden stems there is 丁壬合, which draws the sides toward each other. The outcome depends on the full charts.
What does 丁壬合 mean in a Horse and Monkey pair?
The stem 丁 is hidden in 午, and the stem 壬 is hidden in 申. The stems 丁 and 壬 form the combination 丁壬合. The classics call it a "union of attraction": it creates pull and interest but does not guarantee a merging.
Who dominates, the Horse or the Monkey?
By the elements the Horse dominates: Fire controls Metal. But the Monkey is armed with the hidden Water 壬, which itself controls Fire. In life the roles are distributed by situation, and nobody keeps the lead for long.
What does 2027 mean for the pair?
For the Horse, 2027 is a year of the union 午未合, a supportive backdrop. For the Monkey 申 there are no direct links with 未, so the year is neutral, although the year stem 丁 reaches toward the hidden 壬 in 申. The pair gets a year uneven in tone: easier for the Horse, quieter for the Monkey.
Does such a pair suit a business?
Often yes: the Horse gives energy and visibility, the Monkey agility and practical thinking. But clear rules are needed, because both tend to change the plan on the fly.
