For many people September is an unspoken exam session. The holidays are over, the children are back at school, the "light" work regime ends, and suddenly it turns out that the year is almost gone and part of the to-do list lies untouched. BaZi has a precise name for that feeling: the month of the Monkey is replaced by the month of the Rooster 酉, in which Yin Metal, the purest autumn element, passes from gathering the harvest to evaluating it.
In 2027 the month carries the pillar 己酉 (jǐ yǒu): stem 己, Yin Earth, above branch 酉, Yin Metal. It begins around September 8, at the solar term 白露 (bái lù, "White Dew"), and lasts until the start of October. Below you will find what kind of pair of elements this is, how it combines with the year 丁未, which signs receive unions and which receive clashes, and what stem 己 means for each of the ten Day Masters.
A warning that is better heard before the tables. The month sets a general background. It does not know who you are, where you stand or what is in your chart. Any sign marked here as "tense" may pass September quietly if its chart allows, and the reverse is true as well.
1 White Dew: the border of the month and the character of Yin Metal
The term 白露 falls on September 7 or 8. In seasonal terms it is the moment when morning moisture stops evaporating and settles on the grass. In everyday life that is exactly how it goes: the nights are noticeably cooler and summer finally lets go. The equinox 秋分 (qiū fēn) lies inside this month, nearer its middle, which is why the classics call branch 酉 "the middle of autumn", the point where day and night are equal.
The Yin Metal in command here is, in the imagery of the five elements, not a sword but a scalpel, a sickle, jeweller's wire. Yang Metal (the month of the Monkey) cuts, while Yin Metal selects: it keeps what is needed, trims what is superfluous and finishes the surface. For that reason the 酉 month is often called a month of quality and evaluation. It can seem picky, especially to people whose charts already lean toward self-criticism.
2 The vegetable garden and the sickle: the elements of 己 and 酉
In classical imagery stem 己 is not a mountain but cultivated soil: a vegetable plot, a field, a fertile layer. It is soft, absorbent and patient. Above branch 酉 this Earth finds itself in an odd position: Metal is born from Earth, so the stem feeds the branch, that is, it gives. This is called "drain" or "leakage" (洩, xiè): Yin Earth does not fight Metal but nourishes it, and from an excess of Metal it grows thin itself.
One more detail keeps the picture honest. Branch 酉 holds a single hidden stem, 辛 (Yin Metal). Earth 己 has no roots in this branch: neither 己 nor 戊 lies inside it. Unlike the month 戊申, where stem 戊 had support in a hidden stem of the branch, here the stem seems to hover. For that reason the classics describe 己酉 as a beautiful but "thin" pillar: smooth on the outside, with little reserve of strength. For relationships and work this means: count on your own resources, and do not assume that circumstances will carry everything by themselves.
In the 納音 (nà yīn) system the pair 戊申 and 己酉 share one name, 大驛土, "Earth of the Great Post Station", and this conveys the link between the two months well: after the station with the roads comes the station where cargo is counted.
3 The link with the year 丁未: a quiet echo
Here is an unexpected detail that is easy to miss. Stem 己 is present in the year 丁未 not outside but inside: it is the main hidden stem of branch 未. The other two hidden stems there are 丁 and 乙. It turns out that the month of the Rooster "brings out" what lay inside the branch during the year of the Goat. This is neither a union nor a clash but rather an echo: in September what has been audible only faintly since February becomes easier to hear. For the background on how hidden stems work, see the article on 藏干, hidden stems.
Looking at the stems, 丁 (Yin Fire) produces 己 (Yin Earth), so the year stem feeds the month stem. The branches 未 and 酉 have no link with each other: no union, no clash, no harm, no destruction and no punishment. The Earth of the year feeds the Metal of the month, a combination that has always been considered harmonious by element. The only thing that complicates the picture is the fire 丁 above branch 酉: in the classics Yin Fire "melts" Yin Metal, like a forge acting on a jeweller's blank. It does not destroy the metal, it gives it shape, so in autumn 2027 many questions of quality, craftsmanship and refinement will pass through heat and pressure.
4 The twelve signs in the month of the Rooster
Branch 酉 has a more expressive set of links than its neighbours. It takes part in a union, a clash, a destruction, a harm and a self-punishment, plus two groups. The table uses the classical rules: 六合 (Six Harmony), 三合 (Three Harmony), 三會 (Directional Combination), 六冲 (clash), 六害 (harm), 六破 (destruction) and 自刑 (self-punishment).
| Your sign | Link with the month branch 酉 | How it usually feels |
|---|---|---|
| Rat 子 | 六破 (destruction) | Destruction 子酉: agreements and small plans fall apart, so double-check |
| Ox 丑 | 三合 巳酉丑 (partial) | Support: the Ox joins the Metal group, and the month helps to finish things |
| Tiger 寅 | no direct link | No direct link; the month acts through the elements and the stem |
| Rabbit 卯 | 六冲 (clash) | Clash 卯酉: the sharpest tension of the month, change and a review of course |
| Dragon 辰 | 六合 (union) | Union 辰酉: closeness and a willingness to agree, the best position of the month |
| Snake 巳 | 三合 巳酉丑 (partial) | Support: the Snake joins the Metal group, a gain in focus |
| Horse 午 | no direct link | No direct link; a neutral September |
| Goat 未 | no direct link | No direct link; the year is yours, the month is next door, so look at elements |
| Monkey 申 | 三會 申酉戌 (partial) | Partial autumn group: pressure builds, the tempo quickens |
| Rooster 酉 | 自刑 酉酉 (self-punishment) | Self-punishment: the same sign in the month, a tendency to self-criticism and perfectionism |
| Dog 戌 | 六害 (harm); 三會 申酉戌 (partial) | Harm 酉戌 plus the autumn group: sharp words, hurt feelings, excessive demands |
| Pig 亥 | no direct link | No direct link; the month is even, without surprises |
The main event in the table is the pair 卯酉冲 (mǎo yǒu chōng). The Rabbit, and especially people with 卯 in the month or day pillar, meet September as a change of setting. Often it is an external change: a new manager, a reshuffled team, an office move. The classical image is East colliding with West, young Wood meeting autumn Metal. But a clash shows movement, not loss. A branch 卯 that finds itself face to face with 酉 senses that it is time to change shape.
The Dragon gets the opposite picture. The union 辰酉 (one of the Six Harmony pairs) is considered one of the gentlest: a bond of Earth and Metal in which Earth nourishes and Metal responds with precision. In September Dragons find it easier to negotiate, to coordinate and to make peace. The Tiger, Horse, Goat and Pig stay outside the links, and for them the month is read only through the elements. The Rat receives a destruction 子酉: it does not break things so much as "chip" them, small roughnesses where everything seemed smooth.
The Ox and the Snake receive the Three Harmony group of Metal, 巳酉丑, in its partial form. Two of the three branches have met, and the third needs to be present in the chart or in the ten-year cycle. In practice this feels like a support that makes you slightly more collected. The Rooster enters self-punishment 酉酉: the month repeats the sign, and the main problem here is not external but internal, namely your own exacting standards. For how the classics describe such cases see the article on the punishments of the branches.
The Dog is dealt the harm 酉戌 combined with participation in the autumn group 申酉戌. Harm, the most delicate link in BaZi, is more about irritation than about a break. The Monkey belongs to the same autumn group with 酉, but only partially: the month builds up as a continuation of the previous one.
It is useful to remember that the month itself is split in two by the equinox 秋分 around September 23. The first half still keeps the inertia of late summer: tasks drag on, and people finish what they started in August. After the equinox, Metal enters its full force, and that is when clashes and destructions are felt more sharply: reviews of plans, frank conversations, sudden strictness about results. For the Monkey, Rooster and Dog, who assemble the partial autumn group 申酉戌, the second half of September is often the densest in workload: the autumn Metal concentrates in them, and the pace is set by the season rather than the person. That is no reason to cancel plans, but it is a reason not to put everything important in the last week of the month.
5 Stem 己 and the ten Day Masters
The month stem meets your Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) and turns into one of the Ten Gods. For stem 己 the arrangement is as follows.
| Day Master | Stem 己 for it | What it brings this month |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 正財 Direct Wealth | Union 甲己: the month stem combines with your Day Master, and money and agreements go more easily |
| 乙 | 偏財 Indirect Wealth | Indirect wealth: side jobs, deals through acquaintances, flexible earnings |
| 丙 | 傷官 Hurting Officer | A time of beautiful words and sharp taste; you can shine, but it is easy to offend |
| 丁 | 食神 Eating God | Soft self-expression, teaching, cooking, care for others |
| 戊 | 劫財 Rob Wealth | Competition for shared resources: be careful with shares and joint spending |
| 己 | 比肩 Friend | An even shoulder: friends and colleagues nearby, a calm working rhythm |
| 庚 | 正印 Direct Resource | Reliance on a mentor; documents and education go more easily |
| 辛 | 偏印 Indirect Resource | Indirect resource: self-education, unconventional sources of knowledge |
| 壬 | 正官 Direct Officer | Order, position and formal decisions in your favor |
| 癸 | 七殺 Seven Killings | Pressure and control, but discipline pays off |
I would single out the pair 甲己 (jiǎ jǐ). If your Day Master is 甲, stem 己 enters a combination of stems with it, 天干合 (tiān gān hé), which the classics call the union of Earth. Such a union is attractive: you may feel that circumstances are coming to meet you, but the classics warn that what is "drawn in" must not be mistaken for what is chosen. Another feature: the 甲己 union concerns not only the Day Master but any 甲 in the chart, for instance in the month or hour pillar. For more on the system of stem unions, read the article on 天干合.
For a 癸 Day Master, stem 己 is the Seven Killings, and this is where the pressure may be felt most acutely: inspections, control, demands from above. But the Seven Killings in charts often also mean discipline and achievement. For 壬 it is the Direct Officer: orderly, expected authority. If you wonder who the characters behind these names are, the overview of the Ten Gods will help.
How 己酉 lands on your pillars
The clash 卯酉, the destruction 子酉 and the union 辰酉 work most strongly when those branches already stand in the chart. Year Ahead 2027 lays the year over your own chart, month by month, with no event guarantees. The Standard reading shows your eight characters and where branch 酉 falls, and it covers the year in which you order it rather than 2027.

If you need to close a deal or a contract. Yin Metal likes precise wording and dates. Meticulousness works well this month: reread the appendices, check the details, agree on how changes will be handled. Signs with the destruction 子酉 (the Rat) and the clash 卯酉 (the Rabbit) would do well to insure themselves: arrange a second meeting in advance and not count on everything being settled the first time.
If there is tension in the team. September brings out what has built up: people who stayed silent all summer are suddenly breaking through. Do not interpret this as a personal attack. The month of the Rooster inclines to evaluation, and evaluation inevitably stings. It helps to talk in concrete facts and to avoid generalizations such as "you always" and "we never".
If you are your own strict judge. This applies especially to Roosters and to anyone who already has 酉 in the chart. Self-punishment 自刑 in the classics is not mysticism but a description of a tendency to return to the same thing with a grudge against yourself. Set a limit: one revisited decision per week, no more. For the other signs this trap is less relevant.
Rest in such a month should also be meaningful. Yin Earth is drained by Metal, so whatever "returns the soil" works well: plain food, earth underfoot, a vegetable garden, walks in the woods, handwork. Step away from the screen. This is not medical advice but a practice that the tradition associates with this element.
7 Where it is easy to misread the month
The first mistake is reading only the sign of your birth year. If you were born in the year of the Rabbit and branch 酉 appears nowhere else in your chart, the clash 卯酉 through the birth year gives a general shade but does not define the month. Far more important is where 卯 stands in the chart: in the day pillar it speaks of the close circle, in the month pillar of work, in the hour pillar of children and later life.
The second mistake is confusing self-punishment with a verdict. For people with 酉 in the day pillar, September does indeed more often begin with an inner conversation, but it rarely ends in a problem. More often the result is a stricter and more accurate approach to your own work.
The third mistake is waiting for an "event". Classical links speak of direction, not of cases. If you need an accurate forecast, calculate the month on the chart with your ten-year cycle in mind: it can strengthen or soften everything described here. For the general principle of months, look at the article on the Month Command and the 2027 calendar covering all twelve periods.
And there is a fourth, quietest mistake: hurrying a new launch in September in particular. The pillar 己酉, with no roots in the earth, is good for refinement, selection and closing, but not for starting from zero. If you are putting together a new project, it makes sense to spend September on preparation (calculations, a prototype, negotiating the framework) and to plan the first real step for the month 庚戌 or later, when the season changes. This is not a ban but work with the season: Yin Metal evaluates what has already been done far more readily than it gives birth to something new. This applies especially to Earth Day Masters (戊, 己): for them September drains resources, and it is wiser to rely on what has been accumulated than to scatter strength across several fronts at once.

When does the 己酉 month begin in 2027?
Around September 8, 2027, at the term 白露 (White Dew), and it lasts until October 7. The start can shift by a day, so people born on the border of the month need the exact time of birth.
Why is the month of the Rooster considered restless for the Rabbit?
Branches 卯 and 酉 stand opposite each other and form the classical clash 卯酉冲. It is the axis of East against West, Wood against Metal. It most often shows up as a change of course and a review of plans, not as a catastrophe.
What is the self-punishment 酉酉, and does it concern Roosters?
The classics call it 自刑 when a branch in the chart or in time meets itself. For the Rooster the 酉 month repeats its own sign. This is a tendency toward self-criticism and excessive strictness, not a sentence.
Is the month good for the Dragon?
Branches 辰 and 酉 form a Six Harmony union 六合, and usually the month feels gentler than others: it is easier to negotiate and coordinate. A union does not cancel the personal chart, but the background is supportive.
Can I call the month bad because of its link with my birth-year sign?
No. The link with the branch of your birth year is just one of eight positions. Clashes and destructions occur in charts with the branches of the month, day and hour, and they weigh more. A forecast for a month does not predict events; it describes a background. You can see your own full chart for free on the free chart page.
