If you have ever noticed that a morning in mid-August smells different from one in July, the BaZi calendar agrees with you, and fairly precisely. Around August 8 the Sun passes the solar term 立秋 (lì qiū, "Start of Autumn"), and the month of the Goat 未 gives way to the month of the Monkey 申. The heat is still there and the markets are still full of watermelon, but in the Chinese system the element in charge has changed: summer Fire has handed power to autumn Metal.

In 2027 this month carries the pillar 戊申 (wù shēn): stem 戊, Yang Earth, above branch 申, Yang Metal. You do not need a birth date in this window to read the general background. You need two things: how the pillar relates to the year 丁未, and how branch 申 talks to each of the twelve animal signs. That is what this article covers.

One caveat up front, so that nobody leaves with the wrong expectation. Everything said here about signs is general background for the month. The precise picture for a particular person is set by all eight characters of the chart and by the current ten-year luck pillar (大運, dà yùn). A month in BaZi does not replace a chart. It lies over the chart the way weather lies over terrain.

1 Where the month begins, and what "branch 申 in command" means

Months in BaZi are not counted by the calendar or by the Moon but by twelve solar terms. The 申 month begins at 立秋, around August 7 or 8, 2027, and each term can shift by a day in either direction. If you or your child were born on this border, the date alone is useless: you need the hour and minute, and for a birth very close to the start of a month you sometimes need the city as well.

The border matters for events too. A negotiation held on August 6 still belongs to the month of the Goat 未, while one on August 9 already falls in the month of 申. The difference is real. In 未 the stored energy is Earth with some leftover Fire; in 申 you already have the clean "autumn" energy of decision and selection. The principle is explained in the article on 月令, the Month Command, and the overall picture of all twelve periods is in the 2027 calendar.

2 The elements of 戊申: Earth that feeds Metal

In the classics stem 戊 is compared to a mountain, a dam, a city wall. It is Yang Earth: heavy, immobile, inclined to hold its shape. Branch 申 is Yang Metal, "the sword and the lever", the very autumn in which people decide what has been harvested and what stays in the field. Earth produces Metal, so the stem feeds the branch. The pillar is whole: there is no struggle inside it and no arm-twisting. It is calm, dense and a little stiff.

Three stems are hidden inside 申. The main one is 庚 (Yang Metal), followed by 壬 (Yang Water) and 戊 (Yang Earth). The third hidden stem is the same as the month stem, which means 戊 stands on its own roots in 申. For schools that care about rootedness, this marks a dependable pillar, one where words do not drift away from deeds. The pair 庚 and 壬 adds movement: Metal gives birth to Water, which is why 申, unlike the drier 酉, already holds the beginning of the water element. The classics say that in 申 Water is "born" (長生, cháng shēng, the first stage of the twelve-phase cycle).

The traditional name of this pillar in the 納音 (nà yīn) system is 大驛土, "Earth of the Great Post Station". The image fits: a place where horses are changed and from which roads fan out. It matches the fact that branch 申 carries the 驛馬 (yì mǎ, Traveling Horse) star for the Three Harmony group 寅午戌. For the Tiger, Horse and Dog, this month is more often than others tied to roads and movement.

3 戊申 and 丁未: how the month reads the year

The year stem 丁 is Yin Fire: a candle, a lamp, a forge burning in a closed room. Fire produces Earth, so 丁 feeds 戊. The year branch 未 is Earth, and it in turn produces the Metal of branch 申. That gives a long chain: Fire to Earth to Metal. The year feeds the month step by step, and the month turns that nourishment into structure and results.

For comparison, 未 and 申 are neighbours on the calendar, but neither allies nor opponents. There is no classical link between them: not among the six unions, not among clashes, harms, destructions or punishments. Branch 未 belongs to the southern seasonal group 巳午未, while 申 opens the western group 申酉戌. The month acts as a bridge between two seasons rather than as a conflict. The hidden stems of 未 are 己, 丁 and 乙, and since 己 is also Earth, it directly "confirms" stem 戊 in charts where branch 未 stands together with a 申 month. If you want a refresher on how these layers work, see the article on hidden stems.

That does not mean the month is without intensity. Earth in both the year branch and the month stem strengthens the theme of "hold and put in order". If you suddenly feel like tidying up finances, deadlines and paperwork in August 2027, you are reading the month correctly. If you instead feel like running off on holiday without warning, you are probably a Tiger, a Snake or someone with 寅 or 巳 in an important pillar.

4 The twelve signs: who has it easier, who has it harder

Below, each sign is compared with the month branch. The links are counted by classical rules: the six unions 六合 (Six Harmony), the Three Harmony groups 三合, the Directional Combinations 三會, the clashes 六冲, harms 六害, destructions 六破 and punishments 刑. For group links the table says "partial", because only two of the three branches meet in one month, and the classics treat such a pair as weaker than a full group.

Your signLink with the month branch 申How it usually feels
Rat 子三合 申子辰 (partial)Supportive: water gathers around 申, ideas find resources
Ox 丑no direct linkNeutral; a working month without surprises, and without gifts
Tiger 寅六冲 (clash); 三刑 寅巳申 (partial)The toughest combination: a clash plus a partial punishment group
Rabbit 卯no direct linkNo link; the month passes by, and "stability" is the right word
Dragon 辰三合 申子辰 (partial)Gentle support: part of the water group gives a sense that things line up
Snake 巳六合; 六破; 三刑 寅巳申 (partial)A union with a thorn: closeness, but with punishment and destruction inside it
Horse 午no direct linkNo direct links; a calm month that acts through the elements
Goat 未no direct linkNo direct link; the year is yours, the month is next door, so look at elements rather than branches
Monkey 申same branch (伏吟, fu yin)Your own sign in the month branch: everything gets louder and more personal
Rooster 酉三會 申酉戌 (partial)Partial autumn Directional Combination: Metal strengthens, the load grows
Dog 戌三會 申酉戌 (partial)Partial autumn combination: the month branch sets the pace and you adapt
Pig 亥六害 (harm)Harm: small misunderstandings, hurt feelings, things out of step

Notice that the most visible links belong to the Tiger and the Snake. The Tiger gets 寅申冲 (yín shēn chōng), a head-on clash of axes, plus a seat in the punishment group 寅巳申, the "punishment of power" (恃勢之刑, shì shì zhī xíng), which the Snake also belongs to. The Snake holds a rare mixed position: 巳申 is at once a union (合), a punishment and a destruction. In the classical texts such "pulls and pricks at once" pairs are described as a closeness in which someone ends up offended over time. In daily life it looks familiar: you found a common language with a person quickly, and two weeks later it turned out you had understood the agreement differently.

The Rat and the Dragon form a partial water group 申子辰 with branch 申. For them the month is usually mild: what they started earlier receives support from outside. The Pig 亥 sits in the 申亥 harm, but harm is the smallest of the classical links. It does not break anything; it spoils the mood and produces roughness in communication. The Rooster and the Dog, together with the Monkey, make up the western group 申酉戌 (partial), so for them the month feels like a rising tide of autumn element rather than an outside event.

The Goat has a special place in this list. For the Goat, 2027 is the own year, 本命年 (běn mìng nián), and the month 戊申 arrives straight after "its" month 丁未. There is no direct link, so after the density of July, August often feels like an exhale. More on that in the article about the Goat in 2027.

5 Stem 戊 and the ten Day Masters

The branch speaks for the surroundings and the people around you, while the month stem speaks first of all to your Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ). Stem 戊 turns into a different one of the Ten Gods depending on who you are. The table below was checked against the rules of production and control among the elements; the readings are general.

Day MasterStem 戊 for itWhat it brings this month
甲偏財 Indirect WealthMoney comes through risk and turnarounds: a profitable but uneven deal is possible
乙正財 Direct WealthStraight income and tidy earnings; good for paperwork and reconciliations
丙食神 Eating GodA time of generosity and creativity: ideas, presentations, cooking, teaching others
丁傷官 Hurting OfficerWords cut sharper than usual: strong writing, but be careful with criticism
戊比肩 FriendEven, supportive energy: lean on colleagues, friends and your own reserves
己劫財 Rob WealthA struggle over resources: a temptation to overspend or reach into someone else's share
庚偏印 Indirect ResourceReliance on knowledge and mentors, though someone else's instructions may irritate
辛正印 Direct ResourceA month of support and calm; good for study and for finalizing documents
壬七殺 Seven KillingsPressure and control: inspections, deadlines, a strong boss
癸正官 Direct OfficerOrder and status: official matters, agreements, responsibility

Read a table like this without fatalism. For a 壬 Day Master, stem 戊 gives the Seven Killings, but that is not "an enemy and danger"; it is pressure, under which people who know pressure tend to work well. For 甲 it is Indirect Wealth: money or opportunity, with a warning about risk. For 戊 itself and for 己, the table shows the Friend and Rob Wealth, which is the theme of resources shared with equals. We have separate articles on each of these gods, and the overview of the Ten Gods is the easiest place to start.

What 戊申 does to your own chart

A month reads differently depending on which branches already stand in your pillars. Year Ahead 2027 is built from your own chart: the year as a whole, its months one by one and practical steps, with a January–December calendar and no event guarantees. The Standard reading shows your eight characters, your Day Master and where in your chart branch 申 lands, and it describes the year in which you order it, not 2027.

6 Practice for the month: work, negotiation, rest

Work. Earth over Metal likes structure: contracts, budgets, schedules, clearing out the archive. Close what has been dragging on since July. The month of the Goat accumulated; the month of the Monkey asks for a report. Anything whose result can be measured and put on the table goes well.

Negotiation. Metal likes clear wording. Ambiguity that could be smoothed over with a smile in July comes back in August as the question "what exactly did we decide?" Come with figures and dates. People with 寅 or 巳 in the chart should write down the outcome right after a meeting: in exactly these positions, by the classical reading, people tend to remember what was said differently afterwards.

Money. 戊 over 申 is not about the lottery. This is a month of saving and careful rebuilding, but without guarantees: make market decisions by your own rules, not by a Chinese calendar. The BaZi calendar describes the quality of time, not the movement of prices.

The road. For Tigers, Horses and Dogs, branch 申 carries the 驛馬 Traveling Horse. If a trip has been asking to be put in the plans, this month is broadly favorable to it. For the Tiger itself, because of the clash, it makes sense to build slack into the schedule for delays and connections: do not cancel the trip, but expect the route to change slightly.

If your sign is the Monkey. August 2027 repeats your own branch: this is 伏吟 (fú yín, "hidden echo"), when a sign meets itself. The classics describe such a position not as an outside event but as a turning up of the volume: everything already present in your character and circumstances sounds more distinctly. Decisiveness gets sharper, and so does your habitual bluntness. It is a good month to finish what has long been leading you in particular, and a poor one for reconsidering a decision you already made for the hundredth time. If 申 stands in your day or month pillar and not only in the year, the effect is more noticeable, and then reliance on the full chart matters more than any general table.

Rest. Earth plus Metal tends toward dryness. Water puts it in order: the sea, a bathhouse, cold rivers, simply lying beside a lake. This is not magic but a working metaphor of the elements: in charts that lack Water, August would wear a person out more than in charts with plenty of Water. Here again the chart helps, not the general table.

A separate word on money for Day Masters 甲 and 乙. For them stem 戊 is Wealth (偏財 and 正財), and August often tosses up a financial theme: an offer, a side job, a deal. But the combination of Earth over Metal in the pillar 戊申 itself says that money arrives here through structure rather than luck: through a project, a calculation, a well-built piece of work, not a bet placed at random. Direct Wealth for 乙 likes accuracy: a contract, deadlines, transparent terms. Indirect Wealth for 甲 responds more readily to flexibility and turnover, but its risk is higher too. In both cases branch 申 with its travel signature hints that this month's deal is often connected with movement, a partner from another city, or logistics. And again the caveat: this is general background, not a promise of income. The ten-year pillar and the full chart decide. If you want to see how that layer works, read about the luck pillars 大運.

7 What this month does not promise

A month in BaZi cannot be read apart from three other levels: the year, the ten-year cycle and the chart itself. If your 大運 is currently running through Metal or Earth, 戊申 will strengthen those elements. If your chart already contains 寅申冲, say between the day and the month, August is not a new theme at all but a repetition of an existing one. For how these levels stack, see the article on 流月, the monthly forecast.

One more clarification that often gets lost in popular horoscopes. A link between your branch and the month branch is important, but it is not an "event". A clash of branches does not mean a quarrel, and a punishment does not mean a court case. These are directions in which the system tends to move under certain conditions, and in most cases they show up in small, everyday things: a change of plans, a renegotiated agreement, fatigue with the same rhythm.

So a sensible way to use a forecast like this is to mark the month border in your calendar, find your pair and your stem in the tables above, and then look at what stands next to 申 and 戊 in your own chart. What you find there is the real forecast; the rest is only a frame.

8 Frequently asked questions

When does the 戊申 month begin in 2027?

Around August 8, 2027, at the solar term 立秋 (Start of Autumn), and it lasts until September 7. The borders depend on the exact moment of the term, so for births and events right at the border you need the exact hour of the term.

Is it a bad month, since it follows the month of the Goat?

No. Between 申 and 未 there is no clash, no punishment and no harm. It is a neutral pair: the Earth of the year feeds the Metal of the month. Tension appears only for certain signs, such as the Tiger and the Snake.

Why is the month considered hard for the Tiger?

Branch 寅 clashes with 申 along the classical axis 寅申冲, and both also belong to the punishment group 寅巳申. This is not a guarantee of trouble but a heightened mobility: moves, changes of plan, abrupt decisions.

Is my sign enough to understand the month?

No. The sign of your birth year is only one of eight positions in the chart. The links of branch 申 with the branches of your month, day and hour are usually more important. The exact picture comes from the full chart, using your date, time and place of birth. You can calculate it for free on the free chart page.

Can I plan important matters for this month?

Yes, if you check against your own chart. The 戊申 month does not forbid signing, negotiating or travelling, but for the Tiger and the Snake it makes sense to leave a margin on deadlines. A monthly forecast is a general background, not a prediction of events.
