The last month of any year in BaZi is a little like the last working day before a holiday: everything seems finished, yet on that very day questions surface that nobody raised for weeks. In 2027 this effect is strengthened by the construction of the pillar. The month 癸丑 (guǐ chǒu) stands exactly opposite the year 丁未: 癸 against 丁, 丑 against 未.
The period of the month is approximately January 6 to February 3, 2028. It begins with the term 小寒 (xiǎo hán, "Lesser Cold"), passes through 大寒 (dà hán, "Greater Cold") and ends before 立春, when the next cycle starts. The calendar January here belongs entirely to the old year of the Goat, and that is one more reason why "New Year" resolutions in a chart often turn out to be premature.
Below we look at what a "mirror" pillar is, how it connects with storehouses, whom January makes harder and whom easier, and what stem 癸 means for each Day Master. As always, this is a background and not a destiny: the full chart overrides the general picture.
1 Lesser and Greater Cold: the last month of the cycle
Branch 丑 in the seasonal calendar corresponds to the coldest time of the year, when the ground is frozen, the waters have iced over and nature has gone still. The month stands on the threshold of a transition, and many feel a lull before the exit. Many people notice that in January fatigue rolls in even though there are few events: this is how the rhythm accumulated over the year works.
Branch 丑 is by its meaning a container, a warehouse. Its Earth is damp, heavy and clayey (濕土, shī tǔ). It holds: warmth, water, seeds. The classics say that 丑 "stores" Metal (金庫, jīn kù), which means that in January a hidden reserve goes into preparing the spring. The general principle of months in which the Sun stands at a certain point of the cycle is analysed in the article on the Month Command.
2 Ice on damp earth: the elements of 癸丑
Stem 癸 is Yin Water: dew, rain, mist, an underground stream. It is soft and penetrating. Above branch 丑 with its Yin Earth the picture is this: Earth controls Water, but the Earth is damp, so it does not absorb, it retains. Inside the branch there are three hidden stems: the main one 己 (Yin Earth), 癸 (Yin Water) and 辛 (Yin Metal). The month stem 癸 is among the hidden ones, which means it has a root. The Metal 辛 inside 丑 feeds Water: the chain Earth, Metal, Water works toward preservation.
The pillar turns out secretive and stable but with a cold shade. In the 納音 (nà yīn) system the pair 壬子 and 癸丑 is called 桑柘木, "Mulberry Wood", that is, a winter tree waiting for its leaves. This is an important image: in winter, January gives birth to what will become visible only in spring. If you hurry the process, haste is what you get.
3 The mirror of the year: 癸丑 against 丁未
Now the most interesting part. The year stem 丁 is Yin Fire and the month stem 癸 is Yin Water. The classics call the pair 丁癸 a stem clash (天干相冲, tiān gān xiāng chōng): Water puts out Fire, and this pair belongs to the obligatory list of classical stem clashes (along with 甲庚, 乙辛 and 丙壬). The year branch 未 and the month branch 丑 form the branch clash 丑未冲 (chǒu wèi chōng, the Ox–Goat clash). When both stems and branches clash, they speak of a "returning echo" 反吟 (fǎn yín): the pillar turns out to be the exact mirror of another pillar.
What does this mean in practice? Not a catastrophe but a turn. The year 丁未 was built on the theme of Yin Fire and Yin Earth: painstaking, attentive, household energy. The month 癸丑 as if turns it through a hundred and eighty degrees: dark water, cold earth, results. Such a turn is not harmful in itself: every year ends by opposing itself, and that makes room for the next.
There is one more detail that is easy to overlook. Branch 未 contains the hidden 己, 丁 and 乙, while branch 丑 contains 己, 癸 and 辛. The shared stem is one, 己 (Yin Earth). The rest form clashes: 丁 against 癸 and 乙 against 辛. It turns out that everything hidden in the branches also stands against each other, with the common Earth as the point of support. That is why the clash 丑未 is called in the classics "opening the storehouses": 未 stores Wood, 丑 stores Metal, and their clash releases what has been accumulated. On storehouses, read the article on 墓庫.
It is important not to read 反吟 as "a bad month". That the last month of the year mirrors the year itself is not a failure but a regularity of the cycle. Any movement toward its limit turns back: the year 丁未 began warm and gathering, and it ends cold and taking stock. That is the work of a mirror: to show the accumulated from the other side so that it can be let go. In practice such a pillar is good for an honest assessment: what you built over the year and what you only imitated; where you held on to a matter by inertia and where it is truly yours. People often make a long-overdue decision precisely in January: to leave, to stay, to finish, to begin differently. The mirror does not push toward an abyss, it returns the gaze to oneself.
4 The partial punishment group 丑戌未
One more link is added to the clash. Branches 丑 and 未 belong to the punishment group 丑戌未 (the "ungrateful punishment", 無恩之刑, wú ēn zhī xíng): friction between close people and long-standing allies, a disappointed expectation of gratitude, coldness where support was counted on. A full group requires branch 戌: it appeared in October 2027 (the month 庚戌) but not in January. So the group does not come together at once, and for most people this link stays in the background. For those who have 戌 in the chart, January will complete it. If a Dog stands in your chart, pay attention to this.
The difference between a clash 冲 and a punishment 刑 is that a clash is quick and direct, while a punishment presses slowly and from inside. In January they act together: first a feeling of changed surroundings, then long pressure connected with obligations and expectations. More in the articles on clashes and punishments.
5 The twelve signs in the month of the Ox
The table is built on the classical rules: 六合, 三合, 三會, 六冲, 六害, 六破, 刑. Group links are marked as partial, since only two of the three branches meet in the month.
| Your sign | Link with the month branch 丑 | How it usually feels |
|---|---|---|
| Rat 子 | 六合; 三會 亥子丑 (partial) | Union 子丑 and the winter Directional Combination: a warm, supportive position, resources nearby |
| Ox 丑 | same branch (伏吟, fu yin) | Your sign in the month branch: the Ox's themes sound louder, winter as your own season |
| Tiger 寅 | no direct link | No direct link; the month acts through the elements |
| Rabbit 卯 | no direct link | No direct link; a neutral position |
| Dragon 辰 | 六破 (destruction) | Destruction 辰丑: restructuring, a review of plans and of the order built earlier |
| Snake 巳 | 三合 巳酉丑 (partial) | Partial Metal group 巳酉丑: focus, support for the work |
| Horse 午 | 六害 (harm) | Harm 丑午: quiet friction, things left unsaid, fatigue with duties |
| Goat 未 | 六冲 (clash); 三刑 丑戌未 (partial) | Clash 丑未 and punishment 丑戌未: the most visible position of the month, the year at its limit |
| Monkey 申 | no direct link | No direct link; working neutrality |
| Rooster 酉 | 三合 巳酉丑 (partial) | Partial Metal group 巳酉丑: collectedness, clarity, bringing things to completion |
| Dog 戌 | 三刑 丑戌未 (partial) | Partial punishment 丑戌未: pressure through obligations and other people's expectations |
| Pig 亥 | 三會 亥子丑 (partial) | Partial winter combination: accumulation, an inner rhythm |
The Goat gets the hardest position: both a clash and a punishment. For it 2027 is the own year (本命年, běn mìng nián), and January closes it at its sharpest point. This is not a forecast of trouble but advice: do not make decisions in January that cannot be recalled, keep a reserve of time and resources, and move big starts to after 立春. How the own year is built is described in the article on the Goat in 2027.
The Dog receives a partial punishment group: pressure is felt through position and obligations. The Horse falls into the harm 丑午, a mild but unpleasant link: fatigue with duties, things unsaid in communication. The Dragon gets the destruction 辰丑: an order that was built comes apart. That is not necessarily bad: often what is destroyed had long been asking for a review.
The Rat finds itself in the warmest position: the Six Harmony union 子丑 and the partial winter group 亥子丑. For it January becomes supportive. The Pig receives the same winter group without the union, so the support is quieter. The Snake and the Rooster form with the Ox the Metal group 巳酉丑 (partial): collectedness, clarity, the ability to bring things to an end. The Ox itself meets its sign: its own season, its themes sound louder. The Tiger, Rabbit and Monkey are outside the direct links.
6 Stem 癸 and the ten Day Masters
Stem 癸 is Yin Water. For each Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) it turns into a different one of the Ten Gods.
| Day Master | Stem 癸 for it | What it brings this month |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 正印 Direct Resource | Mentors, support, documents and a foundation |
| 乙 | 偏印 Indirect Resource | Research, solitary study, unconventional sources |
| 丙 | 正官 Direct Officer | Order, position, formal recognition |
| 丁 | 七殺 Seven Killings | Seven Killings and the stem clash 丁癸: pressure, inspections, but also tempering |
| 戊 | 正財 Direct Wealth | Direct wealth and the union 戊癸: income, agreements, a pull of circumstances |
| 己 | 偏財 Indirect Wealth | Flexible money, exchange, side jobs |
| 庚 | 傷官 Hurting Officer | A sharp tongue, talent, conflict with authority |
| 辛 | 食神 Eating God | Soft self-expression, creativity, care for loved ones |
| 壬 | 劫財 Rob Wealth | A rival for resources; be careful with shared spending |
| 癸 | 比肩 Friend | Colleagues and friends, an equal pace, support |
Two stem links need to be named separately. For a 戊 Day Master, stem 癸 forms the classical union 戊癸合 (wù guǐ hé) and at the same time gives Direct Wealth. This is one of the most pleasant cases of the month: a pull of circumstances, agreements, income. For a 丁 Day Master, stem 癸 is the Seven Killings and the stem clash 丁癸冲: for people whose stem matches the year stem, January reminds them that the year has ended and asks for an answer. The other gods are covered in the overview of the Ten Gods.
What 癸丑 does to your own chart
The Goat's clash, the Dog's punishment and the Rat's union depend on whether those branches already stand in your pillars. Year Ahead 2027 follows the year on your own chart, month by month, with no event guarantees. The Standard reading shows your eight characters and covers the year in which you order it, not 2027.

- A review. The storehouse 丑 loves order: go through documents, subscriptions, contracts and unfinished projects. Close what should be closed.
- The conversations you postponed. A clash of storehouses releases what has built up. It is better to begin yourself, in a calm tone, than to wait until the question comes out in an argument.
- A margin on deadlines. Especially for the Goat, the Dog, the Horse and the Dragon: add days to the schedule and money to the budget.
- Do not start from January. Big projects are wiser to launch after 立春, around February 4, when the new cycle begins. January suits preparation.
- A warm environment. Water and Earth together are cold. Keep Fire nearby: people, food, light, movement. This is not medical advice but an image of the balance of the elements.
The lunar New Year in 2028 falls at the end of January, that is, also inside the month 癸丑. So if you celebrate it, remember that in the chart the year has not yet changed. The reference point remains 立春.
Something should be said bluntly about the elements and well-being in January. Water over cold earth is a pillar without warmth, and for people with an already "cold" chart (a lot of Water or Metal and little Fire) January comes harder: it pulls toward hibernation, apathy, endless thinking without action. The classics' recipe here is literal and domestic: add Fire, meaning light, warm food, movement, living people nearby rather than a screen. Those whose chart, on the contrary, has a lot of Fire get from this month a welcome pause and an ability to finally slow down. Separately about 丁 Day Masters: for them the month is especially personal, since 癸 strikes right at their stem. That is no reason for anxiety but an invitation to close the year consciously: to sum up, to thank what worked and not to drag into the new cycle what has exhausted itself. And, as always, what decides is not the sign of the year but the full chart: where 丑 and 未 stand in it and which element is lacking.
8 An example: how the mirror shows in living charts
Suppose a person has 未 in the month pillar and a 丁 Day Master. For such a chart January is arranged almost mirror-fashion: the month's 丑 meets 未 in the work pillar, and stem 癸 clashes with the Day Master itself. The classics call this combination a direct hit: the working role, the habitual hierarchy and one's own sense of self are set in motion at the same time. In practice it may look like an offer to change position, a reorganization, a wish to move to another place.
A second example: a 戊 Day Master with neither 丑 nor 未 in the chart. Stem 癸 forms a union with it and gives Direct Wealth, while the branches of the month and the year pass by. For such a person January will go noticeably more calmly than expected by someone who has read only the general background. Not infrequently exactly such people conclude a contract in January, receive money or agree on something important. The same month, the same year, opposite experience, and this difference illustrates why a general forecast must be read together with the chart.
9 What January does not promise
A mirror pillar sounds dramatic, but in practice it nearly always shows itself in everyday things: a change of the habitual rhythm, an unexpected conversation, plans moved. A clash shows a direction, not an event. The expectation of "something terrible" itself creates a tension that might not have existed.
The main thing to remember: the month is read together with the chart, the 大運 decade and the year. If you have 丑 or 未 in your pillars, January activates them. If not, it stays a general background. Which situation is yours is shown by the chart, not the table. A look at all twelve periods is given by the 2027 calendar.

When does the 癸丑 month begin and end?
It begins around January 6, 2028, at the term 小寒 (Lesser Cold), and ends around February 3, 2028, before 立春. From 立春 the next year, 戊申, begins. The borders can shift by a day.
What does the 丑未 clash in the last month of the year mean?
The month branch 丑 stands opposite the year branch 未. Both are storehouse signs: 丑 stores Metal and 未 stores Wood. The classics say that a clash of storehouses "opens the storeroom": what has accumulated and not been said comes out.
What is a mirror pillar?
It is a pillar whose stem and branch both oppose the year pillar. Here 癸 opposes 丁 (a stem clash) and 丑 opposes 未 (a branch clash). The classics call such a pair 反吟, the "returning echo". It is a strong link, but it describes the tension of time and not a specific event.
Is it a bad month for new beginnings?
The month suits completion, review and preparation. Big starts are wiser to schedule after 立春, when the new year begins. But this is general advice and not a ban: the chart decides. To check your own pillars, calculate them on the free chart page.
Is it equally hard for all signs?
No. The Goat has the hardest time, then the Dog, the Horse and the Dragon. The Ox gets its own month, the Rat a union, the Snake and the Rooster a partial Metal group. The Tiger, Rabbit and Monkey are outside the direct links, and the Pig gets only a quiet partial winter group.
