For most people the year 2027 will end on December 31. For BaZi it does not. The calendar New Year means nothing in the system of Four Pillars: the year 丁未 holds until the solar term 立春 (lì chūn, "Start of Spring"), around February 4, 2028. So the month 壬子, which begins around December 7, 2027 and lasts until January 5, 2028, runs straight through New Year's Eve and remains within the same year of the Goat.

The pillar of the month is 壬子 (rén zǐ). Stem 壬 is Yang Water, and branch 子 is Yin Water. Two waters in a row, one of the most "watery" combinations among the sixty pairs. With the year branch 未 there is a single link, and an unpleasant one: the harm 子未 (六害, liù hài). With the year stem 丁, though, the link is pleasant: the stem union 丁壬. In a single month attraction and friction meet, and that is exactly why it is worth analysing in detail.

As in the other articles of this series, what follows is the general background of the month. It will help you orient yourself but will not replace reading a full chart from date, time and place of birth.

1 Great Snow and the winter solstice

The term 大雪 (dà xuě, "Great Snow") falls on December 7. Two weeks later, around December 22, comes the winter solstice 冬至 (dōng zhì). In the Chinese tradition this is the point where Yin reaches its limit and the return of Yang begins: "one Yang is born" (一陽生, yī yáng shēng). The month 子 is regarded in the classics as the turning one: the darkest, coldest and deepest water, under which the reverse movement has already begun.

In household terms it is a time when the year sums up and the family gathers. BaZi ascribes kinship qualities to this month: warm company, domestic seclusion, a tendency to reflection. Combined with a string of holidays, the month is unexpectedly "homely" for such a strong element.

Because of the solstice the month is convenient to divide in two. The first half, from 大雪 to 冬至, is a decline: water thickens, Yin builds up, and one is drawn to quiet, to settling accounts, to completion. This is the best time in December to close things rather than open them. The second half, after December 22, carries the "born Yang": a first, still weak impulse to move forward appears. That is why it is psychologically easier to sketch plans for next year in the second half of the month, nearer the holidays, when the inner pendulum has swung back toward Yang. The classics treat this moment with respect: many schools count the turn of the annual cycle from 冬至 itself, without waiting for the calendar date.

2 Water over Water: the elements of 壬子

Stem 壬 is a broad river, the sea, a flood. Branch 子 contains a single hidden stem, 癸 (Yin Water), "clean" water without admixtures. Stem and branch share one element: Water is fully rooted, with no conflicts inside. For this reason the pillar is called concentrated, and in the 納音 (nà yīn) system the pair 壬子 and 癸丑 bears the name 桑柘木, "Mulberry Wood". The image is curious: on a frozen bank stand trees that in spring will give leaves for silkworms.

Branch 子 also has a more technical property: for a 壬 Day Master it is the seat of the 羊刃 (yáng rèn), the "Ram's Blade", the peak of Yang force. Read about the star in a separate article on 羊刃. For other Day Masters this detail does not matter, but it underlines the character of the pillar: there is a lot of water in it, and the water is strong and brakeless.

Now compare it with the year. The year stem 丁 is Yin Fire, a quiet candle. Next to the might of 壬子 the candle looks weak: Water controls Fire. This can be read as "in December the fire of the year is muted", that is, the energy of the year is at a minimum. But let us not hurry, because the stem link 丁壬 makes the picture more interesting.

3 The 丁壬 union and the 子未 harm: two signals in different directions

Stem 壬 in the month and stem 丁 in the year enter the classical stem union 丁壬合 (dīng rén hé). In the school it is called the union of "Wood" (丁壬化木), since in a transformation the element would change into Wood. In practice transformation requires conditions: the support of the season, the absence of opponents, suitable branches. In winter Water on its own outweighs, so the classics tend to regard such a union as 合而不化, a union without transformation. The stems are drawn to each other but remain themselves. To the reader it looks like an attraction without a guarantee of result.

The branches say something else. 子 and 未 form the harm 六害, also called "piercing" (穿, chuān). Earth 未 in ordinary logic controls Water 子, but harm is felt not as control but as a quiet, pinpoint pain: things left unsaid, hurt feelings, awkwardness. You can read about harm in BaZi in the article on 害. Harm is considered the mildest of the negative links, and this is important to remember: it does not break, it spoils the mood.

The result is a month in which the stems are friendly and the branches quarrel a little. It is an image familiar to everyone: a beautiful festive gathering where someone is sure to say the wrong thing. Nothing terrible, but it is worth being ready. For the general principle of how stems and branches combine, see the article on stem combinations.

4 The twelve signs in the month of the Rat

The table is built on the classical rules: 六合, 三合, 三會, 六冲, 六害, 六破, 刑. Group links are marked as partial, because only two of the three branches meet in the month.

Your signLink with the month branch 子How it usually feels
Rat 子same branch (伏吟, fu yin)Your sign in the month branch: the Rat's themes sound louder, winter as your own season
Ox 丑六合; 三會 亥子丑 (partial)Union 子丑 and the winter Directional Combination: a warm, dense bond, support from loved ones
Tiger 寅no direct linkNo direct link; the month acts through the elements
Rabbit 卯刑 子卯 (punishment)The rude punishment 子卯: sharpness, tactless words, friction in communication
Dragon 辰三合 申子辰 (partial)Partial Water group 申子辰: support, resources are drawn in
Snake 巳no direct linkNo direct link; a neutral position
Horse 午六冲 (clash)Clash 子午: the sharpest position of the month, a change of rhythm and plans
Goat 未六害 (harm)Harm 子未: quiet friction, small hurts; the year is yours (本命年) and the month presses on it
Monkey 申三合 申子辰 (partial)Partial Water group 申子辰: support, a feeling of a tailwind
Rooster 酉六破 (destruction)Destruction 子酉: small agreements fall apart, double-checking is needed
Dog 戌no direct linkNo direct link; working neutrality
Pig 亥三會 亥子丑 (partial)Partial winter combination: accumulation, a quiet rhythm, home affairs

The Horse has the most visible position. The clash 子午 (zǐ wǔ chōng) is the axis of Water and Fire, north against south, and it is considered one of the strong ones. In December the Horse may feel its habitual rhythm falter: plans are revised, the schedule changes, unexpected tasks appear. For more on the types of clashes, see the article on 冲.

The harm 子未 is particularly familiar to the Goat: branch 未 is its sign, and in 2027 it is the own year. For the Goat, December continues the theme of the year, though in a milder form. If October brought pressure, December brings rather things left unsaid, which are worth putting into words before the year ends.

The Rabbit receives a special case: the punishment 子卯, which the classics call the "rude punishment" (無禮之刑, wú lǐ zhī xíng). It relates not to laws but to manner of communication: blunt words, tactless jokes, sharp remarks. The Rooster gets the destruction 子酉, which shows itself in trifles: mixed-up dates, agreements that fell through. The Ox gets the warmest link: the union 子丑 and the partial winter group 亥子丑. A nocturnal, homely, supportive energy.

The Dragon and the Monkey form the Water group 申子辰 with the Rat. In December two of the three branches are present, and the support is noticeable: resources are drawn in and circumstances fall into place. The Pig enters the winter group 亥子丑. The Tiger, Snake and Dog are outside the links. The Rat itself meets its sign: this is 伏吟, when its themes sound louder.

5 Stem 壬 and the ten Day Masters

Stem 壬 is Yang Water. For each Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) it looks different, and this is the table to read in order to understand the personal shade of the month.

Day MasterStem 壬 for itWhat it brings this month
甲偏印 Indirect ResourceStudy, research, quiet work alone
乙正印 Direct ResourceMentors, support, documents and a foundation
丙七殺 Seven KillingsSeven Killings and the stem clash 丙壬: pressure, inspections, but also tempering
丁正官 Direct OfficerDirect Officer and the union 丁壬: status, agreement, a pull of circumstances
戊偏財 Indirect WealthFlexible money, exchange, risks and opportunities
己正財 Direct WealthTidy income, calculations, obligations
庚食神 Eating GodSoft self-expression, creativity, care for loved ones
辛傷官 Hurting OfficerSharp words, talent, conflict with authority
壬比肩 FriendEquals in strength, shared affairs, but also rivalry
癸劫財 Rob WealthShared spending, other people's shares; be careful with loans

Two stem links need separate mention. For a 丁 Day Master, stem 壬 is the Direct Officer and, simultaneously, the union 丁壬. This is the one case in the table in which a stem union is laid over a thoroughly positive god: status, recognition, the support of authority. For a 丙 Day Master, by contrast, stem 壬 is the Seven Killings and the stem clash 丙壬冲. Yang Fire meets Yang Water, and the pressure is felt directly. But the Seven Killings, supported by the chart, often turns into strength and discipline. The other gods are described in the overview of the Ten Gods.

How 壬子 lands on your chart

The Horse's clash, the Goat's harm and the Rabbit's punishment all depend on whether those branches already stand in your pillars. Year Ahead 2027 follows the year on your own chart, month by month, with no event guarantees. The Standard reading shows your eight characters and covers the year in which you order it, not 2027.

6 Practice for the month: summing up the year, family, trips

Summing up. Water loves depth, so December suits an honest review: what came of the year, where you spent more than it was worth, which relationships were left unanswered. Write it down. You can sum up by the calendar year, but remember that in the chart the year is still going on.

Family. The Rat and the Ox, the Dragon and the Monkey receive support, while Goats and Rabbits meet subtle friction. If you are going to a family dinner knowing in advance that one relative "pricks" with words, move the conversation about contested things to another day. The harm 子未 and the punishment 子卯 love a festive table.

Trips. The clash 子午 concerns the Horse, but the mobility of the month in general is high: winter trips, flights on holidays, connections. Book with a margin and keep all confirmations.

Money. A lot of water without warmth turns to ice. A practical version: do not freeze working capital, leave a cash reserve, and do not make decisions under festive mood. This is not financial advice but a general metaphor of the elements.

Rest. Water should be warm, with Fire nearby. Warm food, a bathhouse, a fireplace, candles (incidentally, 丁 is precisely a candle), evenings at home. Do not get chilled, either literally or emotionally.

A separate word for those whose Day Master is 壬 or 癸, in other words the element of Water itself. December 2027 for them is double water on an already watery base, and that is not always comfortable. An excess of Water in a chart the classics link with too much "thinking": a person turns over options, postpones, and drowns in possibilities instead of acting. For a 壬 Day Master, branch 子 in addition gives the 羊刃, the peak of one's own strength, which without application easily turns into abruptness and stubbornness. The recipe here is not "less water" but "more fire and wood": concrete tasks, live company, physical movement, warm meetings. Those with little Water in the chart, by contrast, receive in this same month a rare resource: clarity, depth and the ability to finally hear themselves. One pillar 壬子, two opposite experiences: it all depends on what your chart lacked before December.

7 An example: two charts in one December

Imagine a person with a 丁 Day Master and branch 午 in the day pillar. For them December looks like this: stem 壬 gives the union 丁壬 and the Direct Officer, that is, recognition, support and a feeling that circumstances come to meet them. But branch 子 clashes with 午 in the most personal pillar. The outcome: pleasant external events and, at the same time, inner instability and a wish to bolt. Such a person often remembers December as a month that was "both good and anxious".

Now a second person: a 癸 Day Master with neither 午 nor 未 in the chart. For them stem 壬 is Rob Wealth, and branch 子 repeats their own element. December passes in a warm but too "own" environment, with a lot of water and few outer impulses. Here the opposite advice is needed: add fire, that is, company, movement, new people. One and the same month asks for different actions, and which ones suit you can only be found from the chart.

8 How not to confuse the background of the month with an event

Harm 子未 is easily taken for a quarrel and the clash 子午 for a catastrophe. In fact classical links describe a tendency, and it shows itself in everyday things: a disrupted schedule, an unlucky phrase, a postponed trip. If your chart already has pairs of branches from the table, the effect is strengthened. If not, you will most likely notice it by the general feeling rather than by events.

There is also a purely practical consequence of the fact that the month 壬子 steps over the calendar New Year. A child born on December 30, 2027 and a child born on January 2, 2028 arrive, by BaZi, in the same year, the year of the Goat 丁未, and in the same month 壬子. Their year and month pillars will coincide; only the day and hour will differ. But someone born on February 5, 2028 falls already in the next year, 戊申, because by then 立春 will have passed. This is a typical beginner's trap: counting the year from January. If there are "New Year" children in your family, or if you were born on those days yourself, determine the year strictly by 立春 and not by the chimes.

For the overall picture it is worth reading the month together with the year and with the 大運 decade. The principle is analysed in detail in the article on the Month Command. A look at all twelve periods is given by the 2027 calendar, and the features of the sign itself are in the article on the Year of the Rat.

9 Frequently asked questions

When does the 壬子 month begin, and why does it cross New Year?

Around December 7, 2027, at the term 大雪 (Great Snow). It continues until January 5, 2028. For BaZi the calendar New Year changes nothing: the year 丁未 will change only around February 4, 2028.

What is the 子未 harm in BaZi?

It is one of the six links 六害. It describes quiet friction between two branches: not a clash but things left unsaid, resentment, awkwardness. For the Goat and the Rat it is felt in communication and in small decisions.

Why does 丁壬合 not guarantee a good month?

A stem union gives attraction but not necessarily a transformation into a new element. By the classics transformation needs the support of the season, and winter Water in December outweighs on its own. Often the union remains simply a link: the stems are drawn to each other.

What should Horses do in December?

The clash 子午 means heightened mobility and a change of rhythm. Leave a margin on deadlines, do not overload the schedule at year's end, and record agreements in writing. This is not a forecast of trouble but a recommendation against haste.

Can I plan important matters for the New Year holidays?

Yes, if you check against the chart. The month forbids neither trips nor signing nor celebrations. But there is no need to rely only on the calendar New Year: in the chart the year is still the same. You can look at your own pillars on the free chart page.
