Monkeys have a reputation for ease in love. They meet people quickly, light up quickly and find a common language with almost anyone. People call them the life of the party, and there is some truth in that. But in BaZi the ease sits on top of a specific structure. The branch 申 (shēn, the Monkey) hides three stems: 庚 (Yang Metal), 壬 (Yang Water) and 戊 (Yang Earth). Metal brings directness, Water brings mobility and the knack of adapting, Earth brings a floor under the feet. The result is a person who can meet you halfway and can also cut a conversation short the moment they feel cornered.

Now the year. 2027 is 丁未 (dīng wèi, the Fire Goat), and between 申 and 未 the classics list no union, no clash, no harm and no destruction. It is tempting to read that neutrality as "nothing will happen," and that would be a mistake. The year is read through the elements instead: the Earth of 未 produces the Metal of 申, while the Fire of 丁 on top presses on Metal. And love has one more layer that sign-by-sign overviews rarely mention, the romance stars. For the Monkey, the 紅鸞 (hóng luán, Red Phoenix) star sits exactly in the branch 未. The year does not just pass by; it arrives carrying that star.

This article is about the emotional side of 2027 for the Monkey. The general forecast for the sign is in The Monkey in the 2027 Fire Goat Year, and the overview across all twelve signs is in Love in 2027: the Fire Goat Year 丁未. Everything below is background by birth year. It does not replace your full chart, and there is a section on that further down.

1 Who counts as a Monkey: a clarification first

In BaZi the birth year starts at 立春 (lì chūn, "Start of Spring"), around February 4, not on January 1 and not at Chinese New Year. So in 2027 a "Monkey" is someone born between early February 1980 and early February 1981 (庚申), in 1992–1993 (壬申), 2004–2005 (甲申), 1968–1969 (戊申), 1956–1957 (丙申), and so on in steps of twelve years. A person born in January 1993 still belongs to the Monkey of 1992 (壬申), because that year ended only in February 1993. Settle this up front, or everything after it gets read for somebody else.

The second clarifying question is whether 申 appears only in the birth year or elsewhere in the chart too. For love, the main address is the day branch, the Spouse Palace (配偶宮, pèi ǒu gōng). If the Monkey sits in your day pillar, everything written below about 申 touches your personal life directly. If it appears only in the year pillar, it is background: family, social circle, the expectations of the people around you. That does not mean nothing is happening; it means what happens happens "outside" the couple.

2 紅鸞 in the year branch: what the star is and what it does

The stars 紅鸞 and 天喜 (tiān xǐ, Heavenly Happiness) are treated in the classics as a pair tied to marriage, engagement, weddings and joyful family events in general. They are counted from the branch of the birth year. For 申, the Red Phoenix is in the branch 未 and Heavenly Happiness is in the branch 丑. That means in 2027 (丁未) the Red Phoenix is activated by the year itself, while Heavenly Happiness comes later, with the branch 丑: the month 癸丑, which begins on January 6, 2028, and then the Ox year 癸丑 in 2033.

What does this mean in practice? When a year brings your Red Phoenix, the theme of relationships is more likely to become visible. Single people more often meet someone, fall in love or return to an old attachment. People in a couple more often face questions about marriage, engagement, a shared home, a child. For those already married, the theme tends to arrive as family events: a friend's wedding, a christening, a parent's anniversary. The star does not decide anything for you. It turns on the stage lights; you still play the part.

One caveat is essential. A Red Phoenix in the year shows the activity of the theme, not its outcome. A year with the phoenix can be the year of a wedding, and it can equally be the year a couple separates so that a new one can form later: the event is likely to be noticeable, and its sign depends on the whole chart. Statements like "in 2027 you will get married" have nothing to do with the classics, and you should not believe them, however nicely they are packaged. More on the star itself in Hong Luan 紅鸞 — Red Phoenix Star in BaZi, and on its partner in Tian Xi 天喜 — Heavenly Happiness Star in BaZi.

3 What the elemental background does to feelings

Now the layer that does not depend on stars. The year 丁未 is made of Yin Fire in the sky and dry Earth on the ground. For Metal (and the Monkey is Metal) that is a double story.

From below, the Earth of 未 produces Metal (土生金, tǔ shēng jīn). The year branch hands some of its strength to your branch. In Ten Gods terms this is resource logic: support, care, the sense that there is something solid nearby. Inside 未 lies 己, which is the Direct Resource (正印) for a Day Master of Yang Metal 庚 and the Indirect Resource (偏印) for Yin Metal 辛. Many Monkeys notice in such years that they accept care more calmly and play the "independent one" less often. In a couple it looks like softening: less need to prove something.

From above, the Fire of 丁 presses on Metal (火克金, huǒ kè jīn). For 庚 the stem 丁 is the Direct Officer (正官); for 辛 it is the Seven Killings (七殺). In relationships the "officer" is read as norms, obligations and expectations; in the classical tradition, for a woman's chart, the officer stars are also linked with the image of a partner. The modern reading is more careful: this is the zone where demands are made of you, and where you measure the other person against a strict scale.

Some schools add a rider to the "Earth produces Metal" scheme: 燥土不生金 (zào tǔ bù shēng jīn), dry, overheated summer Earth does not feed Metal well. It is applied with judgment, not mechanically, by checking whether the chart contains Water to moisten that Earth. The Monkey has Water inside, in the hidden stem 壬, so for the Monkey the rider sounds softer than it does for the Rooster: the year's support stays, only quiet and not instant. If your chart has a lot of Fire and no Water, there will be less support from 未 than the scheme promises.

The resulting background: warmth and a floor from below, higher demands from above. In love this usually sounds like "I want something more serious, and I also ask more sharply."

4 The months of 2027: when it is softer, when it is sharper

Here are the monthly pillars of 2027 as they touch the Monkey. The boundaries are approximate, give or take a day.

PeriodPillarLink with 申What it means for feelings
Feb 4 – Mar 5壬寅寅申冲 (clash)The most visible clash of the year: change, trips, sudden decisions; 寅 is also the Traveling Horse 驛馬 for the Monkey
Mar 6 – Apr 4癸卯none directCalmer; with the year's 未 it forms a half Wood combination
Apr 5 – May 5甲辰申辰 (half Water Three Harmony)Gentle closeness, good for conversations and shared plans
May 6 – Jun 5乙巳巳申 combine, but also destructionPull toward union, but agreements made now can cost a lot later
Jun 6 – Jul 6丙午none directFire at its peak; 午未 Six Harmony with the year; feelings run brighter
Jul 7 – Aug 7丁未none directThe month repeats the year; the background is loudest
Aug 8 – Sep 7戊申申申 (same branch)Your branch doubled: reckoning, self-check, a "back to myself" feeling
Sep 8 – Oct 7己酉桃花The star of charm and attraction; a convenient month for meeting people
Oct 8 – Nov 6庚戌申酉戌 if 酉 is in the chartFatigue, closing off; 戌 and 未 form a destruction
Nov 7 – Dec 6辛亥申亥 harmSmall hurts, things left unsaid
Dec 7 – Jan 5壬子申子 (half Water Three Harmony)A warm, bringing-together month
Jan 6 – Feb 3, 2028癸丑天喜The joy star; 丑未 clash with the year branch (the 丁未 year runs until 立春 2028) recalls what is unfinished

Now the substance. February, the month 壬寅. 寅申冲 (yín shēn chōng) is the Monkey's only direct clash in 2027. It arrives right after the year begins, and many people find the shift happens in the first weeks: a change of housing, a sudden decision to move in together or to part, a proposal that changes the plans. The month stem 壬 forms a stem combination 丁壬合 with the year's 丁, which softens the picture a little. Still, do not take irreversible decisions in February while you are strongly worked up. Write them down and come back after a week.

May, 乙巳. The pair 巳申 is linked in three ways at once: it forms a Six Harmony (六合), it counts as a destruction (六破), and it is part of the triple punishment 寅巳申 (the punishment of power). Which of the three stories is loudest depends on your chart. Practically it is a month when you feel drawn to a quick agreement, and when that agreement deserves a few days of checking.

September, 己酉. For 申 in the 申子辰 group, the 桃花 (táo huā, Peach Blossom) star sits in the branch 酉. This is the month of attraction: you are more noticeable, more pleasant to talk to, and people lean toward you. For single people it is the most convenient month for meeting someone. For those in a couple it is a reason to remember what courting feels like.

October to early November, 庚戌. This is the most tired stretch of the year for relationships. 戌 and 未 form a destruction (破), small and unpleasant friction, and if your chart contains 酉, the month 戌 completes the Directional Combination of Metal 申酉戌. There is too much Metal, and it comes out as sharpness: short sentences, closing off, cutting with sharp corners.

December, 壬子. The warmest month of the year's end: 申 and 子 form half of the Water Three Harmony, and if the chart contains 辰 it closes completely. A time to make up, to travel somewhere together, to agree on plans for the next year.

How 2027 lands on your own chart

A year sign is one of eight parts of a chart. Year Ahead 2027 reads the Fire Goat year 丁未 against your full chart: the year as a whole, its months one by one, practical steps and a January–December calendar. It describes background and timing, not events. If you want to look at a relationship, the compatibility reading compares two full charts.

5 Three scenarios in 2027: single, in a couple, after a breakup

If you are on your own for now. There are two points of activity: February (movement, new circumstances) and September (charm, Peach Blossom). Between them lies a long June-to-August stretch when the year sounds loudly with its own background, and meetings usually bring less. In February, acquaintances tend to come through a change of scene: a move, a trip, a new job. In September they come through shared company and events. If you expect the Red Phoenix to bring someone to you on its own, that will not happen: the star raises the probability of a meeting but does not replace leaving the house.

If you are in a couple. The "what next" topic will probably come up. Wedding, engagement, a shared home, a child: whichever of these has been hanging in the air becomes a question for both of you in 2027. A sign that you are moving at the right pace is that you can talk about it calmly, at least once a month. A sign that you are not is that the topic comes up only in arguments. The Fire of 丁 on top gives these conversations an edge of demand; what helps is the formula "I say specifically what I need" instead of "you never...".

If you have recently split up. The Red Phoenix works here too: a return to an ex, a new meeting, including a sudden one. That is not a reason to rush into a new relationship before the old one has been lived through. The month 寅 in February and 亥 in November (申亥 harm) are places where it is easy to hurt and to be hurt; be careful with public statements and with messages written in an emotional state.

A moment of recognition. You suddenly catch yourself asking your partner, or someone new, questions you used to avoid: about plans for the next five years, about children, about attitudes to money. This is typical behavior for a Monkey in a year with the Red Phoenix: lightness gives way to seriousness, if only for a while.

6 Where 申 sits in your chart: the Spouse Palace and other addresses

The birth year (Monkey) is only one of eight characters. How the year 丁未 touches your personal life depends strongly on which pillar 申 stands in.

Where 申 isSphereHow 2027 reads
Year pillarFamily, circle, expectations of othersFamily and friends take more interest in your relationships; you get advice nobody asked for
Month pillarWork, parents, environmentWork and private life compete for your time; meetings through colleagues are possible
Day pillarYou and your partner (Spouse Palace)The most direct response: the February 寅申冲 touches the couple itself, the September Peach Blossom lights you up
Hour pillarChildren, later plansThemes of the future, children, shared investments

If 申 stands in the day pillar and the chart also has 辰 or 子 nearby, the halves of the Water Three Harmony (申子辰) form in April and in December 2027, and those months sound softer. If 申 is in the day and the neighbor is 寅, February will feel sharper, because 寅 and 申 already sit side by side in the chart and the year only repeats their link. And if the chart contains 巳, then 巳午未 forms in June 2027: the branches 巳 and 未 are already in place and the month 午 closes them. That is a Directional Combination of Fire, and for Metal, Fire means pressure. In that case June becomes the hottest month of the year for private life.

Put concretely: if your chart has 巳, June promises a lot of emotion; if it has 寅, February is the sensitive month; if it has neither, you pass through these points more quietly than the general table describes. Not better and not worse, just differently.

7 Typical Monkey mistakes in a year like this

Monkeys like to act fast, and that works until speed outruns consequences. In 2027 you can expect four typical mistakes.

Rushing in February. 寅申冲 creates a sense that you must decide now, today, before it is lost. In practice most of February's "urgent" looks different by April.

Taking politeness for seriousness. The September Peach Blossom makes you more attractive, but the same star raises the frequency of light flirting. Not every interest in you turns into a relationship, and not every one carries responsibility.

Answering a hard conversation with a joke. This is the Monkey's standard defense: when things get awkward, you change the subject. In a year when the theme of serious relationships puts itself on the agenda, the trick stops working, and a partner reads it as avoidance.

Using October fatigue as grounds to end things. In October and November, 庚戌 and 辛亥 bring extra irritability, and decisions made on that wave are most often reconsidered in December.

8 What to do: a short plan for the year

This is practice that suits almost any Monkey regardless of chart. In February: move, change the scenery, meet people, but do not sign anything irreversible in the first two weeks after 立春. From April to June: discuss plans, build, clarify expectations. July and August: do not demand too much from the relationship, since those months are loud and tiring. September: socialize actively, go to events, accept invitations. October and November: look after yourself and do not hand down verdicts. December: agree and make up.

These suggestions are ordinary and do not require belief in BaZi. The point is that the calendar has an inner rhythm, and it matches how people live: in spring they meet and plan, in summer they tire, in autumn they run out of breath, in winter they gather together. The classics simply give that rhythm the names of the branches.

A year with no direct link to 未 is not an empty one: for the Monkey it arrives together with the marriage star.

In short, 2027 for the Monkey in love is a year when the theme of relationships is likely to be in plain view, though for different reasons. Which side of that theme comes forward is shown only by the full chart: where 申 stands, what is next to it, what your Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) is, and how 丁 and 己 land on it.

9 Frequently asked questions

Is it true that a Monkey will marry in 2027?

No, that is a promise of events that the classics do not make. For the Monkey the Red Phoenix 紅鸞 sits in the branch 未, and the year 丁未 activates it, so the theme of relationships and marriage is put in view. What actually happens depends on the chart, age and circumstances.

Does the Monkey have a conflict with the year branch 未 in love?

There is no direct link: no combination, no clash, no harm, no destruction, no punishment. The year is read through the elements: the Earth of 未 produces the Metal of 申, and the Fire of 丁 presses on Metal. The Monkey's only direct clash of the year comes with the month 寅 in February (寅申冲).

Which months of 2027 are best for a Monkey to meet someone?

Most often September is named (己酉, where the Peach Blossom for 申 sits) and February (壬寅, the Traveling Horse 驛馬, the star of movement, although 寅申冲 is there too). December (壬子) suits closeness in an existing couple.

Which month is the most tense for the Monkey in relationships?

Most often October to early November (庚戌), where 戌 and 未 form a destruction and, if the chart holds 酉, there is too much Metal. February comes next because of 寅申冲.

Is the year sign enough to understand my relationships in 2027?

No. The year sign is one of eight parts of the chart. The Spouse Palace is the day branch, and its link with the year matters more. You can work out your free chart from your date, time and place of birth in the free BaZi chart, and to look at a pair, try the compatibility tool.
