Dogs rarely make scenes in love. They choose a person, take on a commitment and hold to it so firmly that, from the outside, it can look like plain stubbornness. The attachment of 戌 (xū, the Dog) is slow and thorough; it takes a break-up harder than many other signs do, and it speaks about its own needs last, usually only once they have piled up. That is why a year that shakes agreements, of all things, feels especially personal to a Dog.
2027 is 丁未 (dīng wèi, Fire Goat), and the branches 戌 and 未 are linked by 破 (pò), "destruction". It is not a head-on collision like a clash (冲, chōng). It is closer to a crack in a wall that you do not notice at first. If your chart also contains an Ox 丑 (chǒu), the crack is joined by 丑戌未, the three-way punishment 刑 (xíng). We come to it below, because its condition is strict and it does not work "for the sign as a whole".
This article covers matters of the heart only. The general reading of the sign is in The Dog in 2027, and the picture for all twelve signs is in the 2027 love and relationships overview. Everything here is general background drawn from the birth-year branch, one of the eight parts of a chart. A precise picture comes only from the full chart: date, time and place of birth.
1 What exactly 戌未破 destroys
The Dog and the Goat are both storehouse signs (庫, kù); they simply store different things. Inside 戌 sit three hidden stems: 戊 (Yang Earth), 辛 (Yin Metal) and 丁 (Yin Fire). By its dominant element it is the Fire storehouse (火庫). Inside 未 sit 己 (Yin Earth), 丁 (Yin Fire) and 乙 (Yin Wood), which makes it the Wood storehouse (木庫). Notice that 丁 appears in both. The stem of the year itself is also 丁, so the Fire note in 2027 is heard more clearly by the Dog than by most signs.
Now the mechanics of 破. In the classics it is the quietest of the unpleasant links: not an explosion but wear and tear. For relationships it looks like this. A couple lives by rules that formed by themselves long ago and were never reviewed: who calls whom, whose family comes first, who decides about money, how the household is divided. A 破 year does not break those rules. It tests them for strength. What rested on genuine agreement holds. What rested on habit and someone's silent patience starts to creak.
Then there is the Fire of 丁 inside the Dog's storehouse. The emotional response, the very warmth the Dog gives a partner, lies deep. The year 丁未 does not pull it out with a jerk, but it makes you more sensitive to a shortage of warmth coming back. Hence the typical sentence of Dogs in 2027: "I'm not asking for anything, so why do I feel hurt?"
2 Where 戌 sits in the chart: addresses and spheres
The same 破 sounds different depending on which of the four pillars holds your Dog. For love, the deciding word belongs to the day branch: it is the "spouse palace" (配偶宮, pèi ǒu gōng), the closest circle of the personality and of the main partner.
| Where 戌 stands | What the pillar describes | How 戌未破 shows up in love |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Family line, social circle, outer image | The way relatives and friends see your relationship is reviewed; old family arrangements ask to be confirmed |
| Month | Parents, work, environment | Work and private life pull time in different directions; complaints like "you're always at work" come up more often |
| Day | You and your partner | The most personal layer: a sense that a reliable union suddenly needs work it never needed before |
| Hour | Children, late plans, inner world | Questions about children, future housing, how you imagine growing old together |
If 戌 stands in several pillars of your chart at once, the theme of erosion is more noticeable and is spread across several areas. If the chart also holds branches that support the Dog, for example 卯 (Six Harmony with 戌) or 午 and 寅 (a half Three Harmony of Fire with it), the blow is softened. And if 戌 stands alone in the hour pillar and is connected to nothing, you may get through the year hardly noticing it in your private life. That is not a polite hedge: it happens quite often.
3 The second layer: 丑戌未 and an honest "if"
The three-way punishment 丑戌未 (Ox, Dog, Goat) is called 無恩之刑 (wú ēn zhī xíng), the "ungrateful punishment" in the classics: one person believes they have done a great deal of good, the other does not feel indebted. It is one of the most quoted and most misunderstood links in popular horoscopes, so let us be exact. For the Dog it switches on only if the chart really holds an Ox 丑, in any of the four pillars or in the luck pillar (大運, dà yùn) you are running now. With no Ox there, there is no full trio, and you should not go looking for it through indirect signs. The pair 戌未 on its own (in the classical wording 戌刑未) carries only a faint shade of punishment, which in 2027 sounds together with the 破 rather than as a separate theme.
If the Ox is there, three branches come together: the Ox and Dog from the chart, plus the Goat of the year. In love this is not a "disaster" but a particular tone in the relationship: a chill, suspicion, conversations along the lines of "after everything I've done for you". Often it concerns an established couple with unspoken scores accumulated between them. One partner believes they invested more; the other does not remember being asked to.
For the months of 2027 this is an important detail. In January 2028, the last solar month of the year (癸丑, Jan 6 – Feb 3), the Ox arrives as a month branch. So for people born in a Dog year (with 戌 already in the year pillar), the 丑戌未 trio forms for the length of that month even without an Ox in the natal chart: 戌 from the chart, 未 from the year, 丑 from the month. More about this link is in our article on the punishments 刑, and the quiet destruction 破 is covered in detail here.
4 The months of 2027: gentler and sharper
The year pillar sets the background; the month pillars supply the relief map. BaZi months run on solar terms, not on the calendar, so the dates below are approximate, give or take a day.
| Period | Pillar | Link with 戌 | For relationships |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feb 4 – Mar 5 | 壬寅 | 寅戌, half of the Fire trio | An even start to the year, interest in people and plans |
| Mar 6 – Apr 4 | 癸卯 | 卯戌合 (Six Harmony) | The gentlest month: the Dog's 桃花 Peach Blossom, easy introductions, reconciliations |
| Apr 5 – May 5 | 甲辰 | 辰戌冲 (clash) | A shake-up: housing, moving, household questions; old matters surface sharply |
| May 6 – Jun 5 | 乙巳 | No direct link; 巳 and 未 lean toward Fire | The Dog's 紅鸞 Red Phoenix: a window for formal steps and serious talks about the future |
| Jun 6 – Jul 6 | 丙午 | 午戌, half of the Fire trio; 午未合 with the year | Warmth and mobility; good for a joint holiday and frank conversations |
| Jul 7 – Aug 7 | 丁未 | 戌未破, 未 doubled | The main month of the year: erosion is loudest, so do not decide the fate of the couple on emotion |
| Aug 8 – Sep 7 | 戊申 | 申戌, half of the Metal Directional Combination | Tension eases; the Dog's 驛馬 Traveling Horse: trips and a change of scenery |
| Sep 8 – Oct 7 | 己酉 | 酉戌害 (harm) | Light pricks in the close circle, small things left unsaid |
| Oct 8 – Nov 6 | 庚戌 | 戌戌, doubling; 戌未破 with the year | A second wave of the year's theme; fatigue, a feeling of "the same thing again" |
| Nov 7 – Dec 6 | 辛亥 | No direct link; the Dog's 天喜 Heavenly Happiness | A warm month: celebrations, reunions, engagements |
| Dec 7 – Jan 5 | 壬子 | No direct link | Neutral and quiet; a time for taking stock |
| Jan 6 – Feb 3, 2028 | 癸丑 | 丑戌未 forms with the year | A chill, the "who owes whom" tally; not the best time for final decisions |
Three months deserve a closer look. April (甲辰) brings 辰戌冲, a direct clash with your branch, and in private life it most often turns into a question about the home: a move, renovation, shared housing, unexpected guests. Against that background both partners' nerves are stretched and small occasions grow large. A good tactic is to take household decisions into a separate conversation and not mix them with the question "do we love each other?"
July (丁未) is the main month of the year. 未 is doubled and the 破 with your branch is at its loudest. It is very typical to hear Dogs say at this time: "Nothing has really happened, and yet I feel uneasy." Do not take it for a diagnosis: the month simply lights up places that have been leaking for a while. If you were planning to start a difficult conversation, it is better to do so in June, when 午 supplies warmth, or in August, when the tension drops.
October (庚戌) repeats your own branch. Dog meets Dog, and the theme of the year returns as a second wave: the questions you raised in spring come up again, but without the edge. Many couples catch themselves in this very month with the feeling that "we're going round in circles". A simple rule helps here: write down what you agreed, so you do not discuss the same thing a third time.
For conversations about the things that matter, March, early summer and November are the most convenient. July, October and January of the following year are the sharpest. May and November deserve separate attention because the marriage stars fall on them, and those come next.
How 戌未破 lands on your couple
The year sign is the surface layer. Real compatibility is worked out from both full charts: five structural checks, the day branches, the elements, and the way 2027 overlays both charts. There are no percentages here, but you can see where you hold each other up and where the year adds friction.

BaZi stars are calculated from the birth-year branch (finer methods also check them against the day branch). The Dog belongs to the 寅午戌 group, the "Fire trio", and for it the stars look like this:
- 桃花 (táo huā, Peach Blossom) is the branch 卯. It is the star of charm and romantic meetings. The month 癸卯 (Mar 6 – Apr 4) also coincides with the Six Harmony 卯戌合, which makes it the most favourable window of the year for meeting people and growing close.
- 紅鸞 (hóng luán, Red Phoenix) is the branch 巳. It is the star of marriage and formal decisions. The month 乙巳 (May 6 – Jun 5) suits a proposal, filing paperwork, or meeting the parents.
- 天喜 (tiān xǐ, Heavenly Happiness) is the branch 亥. It is the star of celebrations, births and gatherings. The month 辛亥 (Nov 7 – Dec 6) is suitable for a wedding or a family celebration.
- 驛馬 (yì mǎ, Traveling Horse) is the branch 申. It is the star of movement: relocations, distance, business trips. The month 戊申 (Aug 8 – Sep 7) is tied to a change of surroundings, including life split between two cities.
These are windows, not guarantees. A star shows when the year "lights up" a theme; it does not say the event will happen. We have separate articles on the stars: Red Phoenix and Peach Blossom.
6 What the year does to the Day Master
The year stem 丁 lands on your Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) and turns into one of the Ten Gods. The stem 己, the main hidden stem of 未, supplies a second, quieter voice. Together they explain why two Dogs share a branch but have different years. For feelings it looks like this:
| Day Master | 丁 / 己 for it | What is heard in relationships |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 傷官 Hurting Officer / 正財 Direct Wealth | Sharpness and bluntness in words; at the same time a pull toward a stable union |
| 乙 | 食神 Eating God / 偏財 Indirect Wealth | Tenderness, a wish to please; light, mobile attractions |
| 丙 | 劫財 Rob Wealth / 傷官 Hurting Officer | Rivalry, jealousy, ill-timed jokes; a "third person" in the conversation |
| 丁 | 比肩 Friend / 食神 Eating God | A drive for independence together with a drive for care; the partner misses you |
| 戊 | 正印 Direct Resource / 劫財 Rob Wealth | A need for warmth and home; resources are shared with parents or children |
| 己 | 偏印 Indirect Resource / 比肩 Friend | Closed off, hard to talk about feelings; you withdraw into yourself |
| 庚 | 正官 Direct Officer / 正印 Direct Resource | For a woman, the husband star: serious intentions, questions of status; support from those close to you |
| 辛 | 七殺 Seven Killings / 偏印 Indirect Resource | For a woman, a strong, tense influence from the partner; decisions come harder |
| 壬 | 正財 Direct Wealth / 正官 Direct Officer | For a man, the wife star; 丁壬合 pulls toward certainty and commitment |
| 癸 | 偏財 Indirect Wealth / 七殺 Seven Killings | For a man, mobile, light connections; inner pressure from his own expectations |
The spouse star in BaZi depends on gender: for a woman it is the Officer star (官殺), for a man the Wealth star (財). In 2027 not everyone receives it. For women with a Day Master of 庚 or 辛 the year stem 丁 supplies it; for women of 壬 or 癸 it comes through the hidden 己 (Direct Officer and Seven Killings, with the theme sounding quieter). For men of 壬 and 癸 the stem 丁 supplies it, and for men of 甲 and 乙 it is 己. Other Day Masters hear the relationship theme indirectly, through self-expression, support or rivalry. All the Gods are described in more detail in our article on the Ten Gods.
7 Three scenarios: singles, couples, long marriages
If you are on your own for now. The first thing to know is that for the Dog there is no "closed door" in dating in 2027. The strong window falls in March, where 桃花 coincides with the Six Harmony 卯戌合. The typical trap is that a Dog who needs a dependable person observes for too long and misses the moment. In this sense a 破 year does not punish, it nudges: those who do not postpone the first step until "everyone is ready" usually get more feedback. But there is no point rushing into commitments in July either.
If you are in a couple. This is the most typical scenario of 2027 for the Dog: an audit of agreements. It usually starts with something small. You need to decide who visits whose parents for the holidays, how to split costs after one of you has had a change in income, at what stage to have children or move. Each small thing is harmless by itself. But in a 破 year they add up to one shared question: "are we even on the same page?" Couples with warm trust at the core pass the test calmly. Couples that ran on habit are forced at last to say aloud what had gone unspoken.
If you have a long marriage behind you. Here the theme of 刑 and "unspoken scores" is heard more often. The partners have been together so long that they stopped asking each other what each wants now, rather than twenty years ago. A year in which something is meant to leak a little is a good one for taking inventory: what in our home no longer works, and who is keeping quiet about it? The unpleasant feeling that comes with this is usually brief and quite productive.
8 What to do: five steps without drama
- Do an inventory together. Sit down with your partner and go through three or four "unwritten rules" of your couple. Do not argue with them, just say them aloud: "we do it this way because..." You will be surprised how many of them neither of you has liked for a long time.
- Pick a month for the serious conversation. March, June and November suit best. Leave July and October for household questions, not fateful ones.
- Talk about needs, not about scores. "I need us to have Sundays just the two of us" works better than "you're always busy". For a Dog used to enduring, this is an unfamiliar genre, but in a 破 year it pays off.
- Make no final decisions in the months of 丁未 and 庚戌. If the matter is serious, let it wait at least a week after the emotional peak.
- Check your chart. Is there a 丑, 卯, 午 or 寅 in it, which stem stands in the day pillar, and which luck pillar is running now? That determines how sharp the year will be for you specifically.
9 Typical mistakes of the Dog in a 破 year
Enduring "out of loyalty". Loyalty is a strength of the Dog, but silently piling up grievances is not loyalty. Patience without a conversation turns into a tally, and sooner or later the tally is presented.
Grabbing for control. When things feel shaky, there is a temptation to fix everything with rigid rules. This usually widens the cracks: the partner feels pressure and starts to pull away.
Testing the partner's loyalty. The Dog is suspicious by nature, and the 刑 and 害 (for example 酉戌害 in September) push toward checking "whose side are you on". It is better simply to ask.
Blaming everything on the year. "It's 破, it always goes like this" is convenient, but it does not answer the question of what exactly has broken in your case. The year branch is one of eight signs in a chart, and without the other seven the conclusions stay general.
In short: for the Dog, 2027 is a year of honestly testing closeness. For those whose agreements were alive, it passes as an audit after which things are clearer. For those who had been keeping quiet and counting, such a year is often the first reason to start talking. Which of the two is closer to you can only be seen from the full chart.

Will Dogs break up in 2027 because of 戌未破?
No, a link between branches does not predict a break-up. 破 points to a zone of wear: agreements that have not been reviewed for a long time are tested for strength. Couples who are ready to talk them over usually get through the year without losses. The whole chart decides, not one sign.
What is 丑戌未 and when does it touch the Dog in love?
It is a three-way punishment that forms when the chart holds an Ox 丑 next to the Dog and the year brings the Goat 未. If there is no Ox in the chart, there is no full 刑. For the length of one month it forms in January 2028 (癸丑), when the Ox arrives as the month branch.
Which months of 2027 suit the Dog best for meeting people and talking about marriage?
March (癸卯, Peach Blossom and the Six Harmony 卯戌合), May (乙巳, Red Phoenix) and November (辛亥, Heavenly Happiness). Be more careful in July (丁未, the peak of 破) and October (庚戌, the theme repeats).
When does the Dog have the marriage star 紅鸞 Red Phoenix?
For the Dog, Red Phoenix is the branch 巳. In 2027 it is switched on by the month 乙巳, from May 6 to June 5. It is a window for formal steps, not a guarantee of an event.
Is the year sign enough to understand my relationships in 2027?
No. The year sign is one of the eight parts of the chart. The spouse palace is the day branch, and its link with the year matters more. You can work out a free chart from your date, time and place of birth in the free BaZi chart calculator.
