Between the pair of wealth stars — 正財 and 偏財 — the first is the "proper" one (正, zhèng — direct, lawful, official). This is wealth with no surprises: a salary that arrives on the first of the month, rental income at a regular rate, a business model with predictable cash flow. There's none of 偏財's (piān cái — "indirect wealth") thrill, but there is what 偏財 often loses: stability.

正財
Zheng Cai · Direct Wealth
zhèng cái · Direct Wealth · Proper Money

The mechanics: 正財 is the element your 日主 (rì zhǔ — "the master of the day") controls, with the opposite polarity. If your 日主 is 甲 Jia (Yang Wood), then 正財 is 己 Ji (Yin Earth, which Wood controls, with an opposite polarity). You "manage" 正財, and it obeys predictably.

1 The 正財 archetype: who earns this way

2 正財 as "the wife" in a man's chart

In the traditional BaZi system, for a man, 正財 is the star of the official, lawful wife (正妻星, zhèng qī xīng). Unlike 偏財, which points to informal or inconstant connections, 正財 speaks of a registered marriage, a stable partnership, official status.

A strong, clean 正財 in a man's chart is a sign of a serious, responsible attitude toward marriage. The wife is financially stable, or brings stable income to the family. A weak 正財, or a 正財 attacked by 比肩 (bǐ jiān — "shoulder to shoulder") or 劫財 (jié cái — "rob wealth"), signals risk in the marriage, instability in the relationship.

💍 For women: In a woman's chart, 正財 is not the husband star (that's the function of 正官 or 七殺). For a woman, 正財 is her personal money and expenses. A strong 正財 for a woman means financial independence and the ability to manage a personal budget.

3 When 正財 is weak: chronic instability

Weakness in the chart's 正財 (few signs of the controlled element, or a 日主 too weak to control it effectively) shows up as:

4 When there's too much 正財: conservatism as a trap

Paradoxically, an excess of 正財 also creates problems. If a chart has a lot of 正財 and little 偏財 (piān cái), the person becomes overly conservative. Afraid to take risks. Misses opportunities that demand a fast decision. Sits on cash under the mattress instead of investing it.

5 正財 + 正官 (zhèng guān): the ideal career pair

The best combination for a stable, well-paid career: 正財 + 正官. 正官 (direct officer) grants a position, authority, career advancement. 正財 is the stable income from that position. The charts of people in senior government or corporate positions with reliable compensation often carry this pairing.

正財如土地,耕耘即有收穫 — "正財 is like land: sow it, and you will reap." There's nothing romantic about this formula. But it's exactly what builds fortunes.
