天德 and 月德 — Heavenly
and Monthly Virtue

Among the dozens of marker stars of Shen Sha (神煞 — shén shà — "spirits and punishments") in the BaZi system, there are two that masters single out especially. These are not stars of wealth, not stars of fame, not stars of passion. They are stars of protection. They are called 天德 (tiān dé — "heavenly virtue") and 月德 (yuè dé — "monthly virtue"). If even one of them stands in a person's chart, a BaZi master sighs with relief: this destiny carries an invisible protective dome.

The classic treatise 三命通會 (Sān Mìng Tōng Huì — "The Complete Compendium of the Three Fates") says of them: «天月二德, 乃眾煞之主, 能解諸凶» — "The two virtues, Heavenly and Monthly, are the masters of all afflictions: they are able to dissolve any misfortune." In other words, these are antidote stars. Wherever a dangerous configuration lurks in the chart, the virtue stars soften its blow.

1 What noble stars are in BaZi

Before discussing the two Virtues, one must understand the category itself. In Chinese metaphysics there is a concept called 貴人 (guì rén — "noble people") — literally "a precious person," meaning a patron, a protector, someone who appears at just the right moment and saves the day. Noble stars (貴人星 — guì rén xīng — "stars of noble people") mark the presence of such a force in a person's destiny.

Noble stars fall into those that attract helpers (such as 天乙貴人 — Tianyi Guiren — "the heavenly noble"), and those that endow the person themselves with protective virtue. Tian De and Yue De belong to the second group. Rather than sending you a savior, they make you yourself the carrier of grace, someone who "just happens" to stand outside the blast radius when the fates around them are collapsing.

It's important to understand the hierarchy. In the Shen Sha system, stars are either favorable (吉神 — jí shén — "auspicious spirits") or unfavorable (凶煞 — xiōng shà — "malevolent afflictions"). The two Virtues are the pinnacle of the favorable stars, and with a unique property besides: they directly dampen the action of malevolent stars, something almost no other noble star does.

2 天德 — Heavenly Virtue: protection from above

天德 (tiān dé — "heavenly virtue") is grace descending "from above," from Heaven (天 — tiān — "heaven"), from higher powers, from the cosmic order. Metaphysically, it is a sign that a person stands under the patronage of the universe itself.

A carrier of a strong 天德 receives help from what seems like nowhere at the moment of crisis. When every door is shut, a crack opens that no one knew about. When a diagnosis seems like a sentence, a doctor turns up who sees it differently. When things head toward bankruptcy, an unexpected offer arrives. The classics called this «逢凶化吉» (féng xiōng huà jí — "meeting misfortune, turning it into fortune").

In character, 天德 shows up as moral strength. Carriers of this star rarely stoop to baseness — not out of fear of punishment, but because uprightness is built into their nature. Deceiving others is "distasteful" to them. They intuitively choose the honest path, and it is precisely this honesty that becomes their protection: Heaven watches over the one who does not break its laws.

3 月德 — Monthly Virtue: gentle protection

月德 (yuè dé — "monthly virtue") is weaker in strength than the Heavenly one, but has a different, warmer nature. Where 天德 is protection "from above," somewhat cool and majestic, 月德 is protection "from inside and alongside," maternal, human, arriving through the Moon (月 — yuè — "moon"), the symbol of the feminine, nurturing Yin principle.

A carrier of 月德 is protected not so much by miracle as by the kindness of those around them. They are loved. People take care of them. Family, friends, colleagues support them in hard times — not out of calculation, but because they inspire genuine warmth. This star grants the gentle charm of a decent person.

In character, 月德 shows up as compassion, gentleness, a readiness to help others. These are "harbor" people, whom others are drawn to for warmth. They are not ambitious in an aggressive sense, but the world seems to part before them, because people wish them well. In women's charts, 月德 often points to a harmonious marriage and caring motherhood.

4 How to find 天德 and 月德 in a chart

Unlike most Shen Sha stars, which are counted from the day stem, both Virtues are calculated from the month branch (月令 — yuè lìng — "the month's command") — that is, from the branch of the month pillar, which determines the season of birth. This makes sense: virtue arrives "in season," in harmony with the year's rhythm.

For 天德 (Tian De), a specific heavenly stem or earthly branch is sought in any of the chart's pillars, based on the month branch. For 月德 (Yue De) — a specific heavenly stem, tied to the seasonal triad of elements (三合 — sān hé — "triple combination").

The logic of 月德 is easy to remember through the triple combinations of elements: for the Fire triad (寅午戌 — Yin, Wu, Xu), Monthly Virtue is 丙 (Bing, Yang Fire); for the Water triad (申子辰 — Shen, Zi, Chen) — 壬 (Ren, Yang Water); for the Wood triad (亥卯未 — Hai, Mao, Wei) — 甲 (Jia, Yang Wood); for the Metal triad (巳酉丑 — Si, You, Chou) — 庚 (Geng, Yang Metal). In other words, 月德 is always the chief Yang stem of the seasonal element.

Example. A person is born in the 午 month (Wu, Horse, the height of summer). Their 天德 is the branch 亥 (Hai), and their 月德 is the stem 丙 (Bing). If the branch Hai appears anywhere in their chart, their Heavenly Virtue is active. If the stem Bing appears, the Monthly Virtue is active. If both are present, this is a case of "double virtue."

5 What having these stars gives you

The chief gift of both Virtues is the softening of misfortune. They are often called the chart's "guardian angel." Concretely, this shows up as:

• Turning misfortune into fortune (逢凶化吉). What should have become a catastrophe turns into merely a scare or moderate losses.
• Softening malevolent stars. Dangerous Shen Sha configurations lose much of their power in the presence of a Virtue.
• Protecting reputation. Even in a scandal, a Virtue carrier comes out "clean" — they are believed, they are forgiven.
• Help in hopeless situations. When logically there is no way out, an unexpected path appears.
• Longevity and resilience. These stars are linked to protecting life during dangerous periods.

The effect also differs by position within the chart:

6 天德 + 月德 together — double virtue

When both stars are present in one chart at once, this is called 二德 (èr dé — "the two virtues"), or "double virtue." This is a rare and especially favorable combination. The classics considered it a mark of a person of outstanding moral purity and near-invulnerable protection.

A carrier of double virtue combines the majestic protection of Heaven and the warm protection of people. Destiny watches over them, and those around them love them. Such people often become figures of moral authority — others come to them for a fair judgment, their word carries weight, their reputation is nearly unassailable.

7 These stars and character: nobility and moral authority

Beyond protection, both Virtues shape a recognizable character. These are people who radiate a sense of decency. It's hard to picture them as a con artist or a traitor — not because they are "saints," but because baseness contradicts their very nature.

• Moral uprightness. An inner compass that is hard to throw off course.
• Compassion. A natural inclination to help the weak.
• Calm dignity. They don't fuss, don't panic, they radiate steadiness.
• Moral authority. People trust their judgment and come to them for advice.
• An inner peace. Even in a storm they keep a center of calm.

This link between character and protection is no coincidence. In Chinese philosophy, 德 (dé — "virtue") is not a moral decoration but a force, accumulated moral capital that genuinely shapes the course of destiny. The Virtue stars in a chart are a sign that this capital was already laid into the person at birth.

8 Protection in dangerous years: softening 沖 and 七殺

The most valuable function of the Virtues reveals itself precisely in dangerous periods — when destructive configurations arrive in the luck pillars (大運 — dà yùn — "the great luck") or in the year pillar (流年 — liú nián — "the current year").

Two chief threats that the Virtues soften:

• 沖 (chōng — "clash") — a direct confrontation between two earthly branches, disrupting a pillar's stability. It strikes at whichever area of life corresponds to that pillar. With a Virtue present, the clash "hits softer": a move instead of a catastrophe, a quarrel instead of a divorce, a loss instead of ruin.
• 七殺 (qī shā — "seven killings") — the most aggressive of the ten gods, a symbol of pressure, enemies, violence, extreme stress. Left unmanaged, it can "flatten" a person. Virtue acts as a buffer: it "tames the killer," turning the destructive force of 七殺 into discipline, a trial, a point of growth.

When analyzing a dangerous year, BaZi masters always check first: is there a Virtue in the chart, and is it active during this period. If yes — the forecast softens. If not — special caution and "artificial" protection are recommended (see section 10).

9 The link to accumulating good deeds — 陰德

Here we arrive at the deepest and most beautiful part of the teaching on the Virtues. In Chinese metaphysics there is a concept called 陰德 (yīn dé — "hidden virtue") — good deeds done in secret, with no expectation of reward or recognition. It is believed that hidden virtue has the strongest influence of all on destiny.

The classics directly linked the stars 天德 and 月德 to the accumulation of 陰德. There is a famous saying:

This is a striking idea: protection that birth did not grant you can be earned through your actions. Here, BaZi stops being fatalism. The chart is your starting conditions, but 陰德 (yīn dé) is the lever with which a person builds out their own protection. Helping a stranger without boasting; saving an animal; supporting someone who will never repay you — every such act, the teaching holds, "writes in" virtue in the invisible layer of destiny.

10 How to "activate" the protection of these stars

Having 天德 or 月德 in your chart is potential. For it to work at full strength, the protection needs to be "activated." And if the stars aren't there, their influence can be partly recreated. Here are the practical paths.

If the Virtue is in your chart

• Live by your conscience. The main condition. The virtue stars "switch off" if the carrier goes against their own moral nature. Baseness extinguishes the protection.
• Help without expecting anything back. Activation happens through 陰德 (yīn dé) — hidden good deeds. The more quiet help you give others, the stronger your own shield.
• Don't abuse the protection. The star is not a license for recklessness. Use it as insurance, not as an excuse to court danger.
• Trust your intuition in a crisis. The "saving crack" often arrives as a quiet thought or a strange coincidence. Notice it.
• Be grateful. Gratitude is fuel for the noble stars. Whoever takes help for granted loses it.

If the Virtue is not in your chart

• Accumulate 陰德 (yīn dé). The most direct path, prescribed by the classics themselves. Quiet help, charity without publicity, kindness to those who will never repay you.
• Surround yourself with "virtuous" people. Mentors, spiritual teachers, honest friends can partly play the role of a protective star.
• Cultivate the character of Virtue. Compassion, uprightness, calm dignity can be cultivated. Character changes how destiny responds.
• Activate the star in a favorable year. If 天德 or 月德 "arrives" through a luck pillar or the year pillar, this is a window of special protection. Plan important matters for such periods.
• Lean on 用神 (yòng shén — "the useful god"). A properly strengthened useful element in the chart creates a stability of its own, close to the effect of a Virtue.

In the classical Ziping school system of BaZi, the two Virtues — 天德 (Tian De) and 月德 (Yue De) — hold a special place, not because they bring wealth or power, but because they embody the deepest principle of Chinese metaphysics: the one who carries good within is protected. These are stars not of luck, but of grace. Not of acquiring, but of preserving.

If they are in your chart, this is a precious gift. Guard it with honesty and quiet good deeds. If they are not, don't despair: the classics say directly that virtue can be grown through 陰德 (yīn dé). And in this, perhaps, lies the main lesson of these stars: the most reliable protection is the one you earned yourself, by helping others.
