In the BaZi system, besides the five elements and the ten gods, there is another layer — Shen Sha (神煞), or "spirits and punishments": special marker stars calculated by fixed formulas that bring particular qualities into a chart. Among them are favorable ones (吉神) and unfavorable ones (凶煞). And right at the top of the favorable list stands one — Tianyi Guiren (天乙貴人 (tiān yǐ guì rén — "heavenly noble")).
The classic 三命通會 says: «天乙者, 乃天上之神, 在紫微垣閶闔門外, 與太乙並列» — "Tian Yi is a heavenly deity, dwelling by the gates of Ziwei (the Purple Forbidden Enclosure), on par with Tai Yi." This means that in the celestial hierarchy Tianyi stands on the same level as Tai Yi, the supreme star-emperor. Metaphysically, it is the noblest of all the chart's auxiliary stars.
1 What the Tianyi Guiren star is
Tianyi Guiren (天乙貴人), translated literally, means "the sole heavenly noble person." "Tian" (天) is heaven, "Yi" (乙) here carries the sense of "the sole, the outstanding one," and "Guiren" (貴人) literally means "a precious person" — that is, a person of high status, a mentor, a patron.
This star embodies in the chart the principle of help from above, unexpected rescue, the arrival of the right person at the right moment. When a BaZi master sees Tianyi in a chart, they immediately note: this person has an "invisible safety net" — even if they run into trouble, someone will be there to lend a hand.
Historically, this star traces back to the ancient Chinese cult of the Big Dipper and the Purple Forbidden Enclosure (紫微垣). According to legend, Tian Yi was the assistant of Tai Yi, the chief deity of the celestial court, and it was Tian Yi who carried Heaven's will to people, rescuing the righteous. That is why Tianyi in a chart is a sign of heavenly justice and intercession.
2 How Tianyi Guiren is calculated
The Tianyi Guiren star is calculated from the Day Master (the heavenly stem of the birth day) and is looked for in the earthly branches of the whole chart — year, month, day, and hour. It can also be checked in the luck pillars (Da Yun) and in the year pillars (流年 (liú nián — "the current year")).
The classic formula was already handed down in the Tang era in verse form (歌訣):
丙丁猪鸡位, 壬癸兔蛇藏,
庚辛逢虎馬, 此是貴人方»
Translated: "Jia, Wu, Geng — the Ox and the Goat; Yi, Ji — the Rat and the Monkey; Bing, Ding — the Pig and the Rooster; Ren, Gui — the Rabbit and the Snake; Geng, Xin — the Tiger and the Horse — these are the directions of the noble people."
| Day Master (day stem) | Tianyi Earthly Branches | Carrier's Element |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia / 戊 Wu / 庚 Geng | 丑 Chou (Ox) / 未 Wei (Goat) | Earth |
| 乙 Yi / 己 Ji | 子 Zi (Rat) / 申 Shen (Monkey) | Water / Metal |
| 丙 Bing / 丁 Ding | 亥 Hai (Pig) / 酉 You (Rooster) | Water / Metal |
| 壬 Ren / 癸 Gui | 卯 Mao (Rabbit) / 巳 Si (Snake) | Wood / Fire |
| 庚 Geng / 辛 Xin | 寅 Yin (Tiger) / 午 Wu (Horse) | Wood / Fire |
A note for practitioners: there are two classic systems — the "day" and "night" Tianyi. The day one is for people born between sunrise and sunset, the night one for those born in the dark hours. But in most modern schools (especially the classical Ziping school's) both branches are considered equally valid, so the table is simplified to two universal branches.
A calculation example. If your Day Master is Bing (丙, Yang Fire), your Tianyi Guiren are the branches Hai (亥) and You (酉). If your chart has at least one of them (in the year, month, day, or hour), the star is active. If both are present, this is the rare case of "double Tianyi," especially favorable.
3 Tianyi's position in the pillars
Exactly where Tianyi sits in the chart matters enormously. The same calculation carries a different meaning depending on the position.
The Year Pillar (年柱)
Tianyi in the year pillar means an "ancestral blessing." This person was born into a family with figures able to help — parents, uncles, a grandmother or grandfather with resources, connections, wisdom. Even if the family was not wealthy, there was someone in it (a teacher, a relative, a neighbor) who proved decisive for the rest of their life. In childhood and youth (ages 0-15) this person received support that shaped their trajectory.
The Month Pillar (月柱)
The strongest position for Tianyi. The month pillar is the "zone of career and social fulfillment" (ages 15-30). Tianyi here means that a mentor, an angel investor, a guide always shows up at work. This person rarely builds a career alone — they are "advanced" from above. Such people often find that they have "strangely good luck" with bosses and partners.
The Day Pillar (日柱)
Tianyi in the day branch is a special configuration. Here the star merges with the carrier's own personality. Such a person becomes a "Guiren" for others themselves — they naturally help, mentor, rescue. People often confide their secrets in them; they have "the face of someone you can come to." In the day pillar, Tianyi also means help from a spouse — a marriage to someone who literally brings rescue.
The Hour Pillar (時柱)
Tianyi in the hour affects old age, children, and students. Such a person receives help from the younger generation — from their own children in old age, from students, from younger colleagues carrying on their work. This is also spiritual Tianyi: help from teachers, gurus, higher powers, guardian angels. Many religious practices and a strong intuition are linked to Tianyi in the hour.
4 Strong expressions of Tianyi Guiren
When Tianyi works at full strength, the star's expressions are concrete and recognizable:
- Luck at critical moments. When it seemed "all was lost," a solution, a person, a circumstance suddenly appears. They are saved from being fired, from an accident, from bankruptcy, from illness.
- Influential acquaintances. Without much effort they acquire contacts in high circles. Meetings happen "by chance" — at a wedding, in a line, on a plane.
- Patrons and mentors. Older, successful, well-known people take them under their wing. They teach for free, recommend them, help with money.
- Help from strangers. When it's needed, a random person happens to be nearby and solves the problem. An old man with the right medicine, a driver who gives them a lift to the hospital, a passerby with the right advice.
- Attractiveness to others. People are drawn to such carriers for advice, for help, for "energy." They naturally inspire trust.
- "Blind luck" in travel and moving. They find an apartment, a job, fellow travelers as if by miracle.
- Ease in crises. When everything is falling apart for others, Tianyi carriers "somehow manage."
- The capacity to become a Guiren themselves. With age they discover their purpose is to be such a mentor for others. The circle closes.
5 Weak expressions — when Tianyi doesn't work
The star can be "dormant" or even "broken." This happens under several conditions.
The breaking of Tianyi
- A clash (沖, chōng) — if the Tianyi earthly branch is struck by its opposite branch (for example, Chou-Wei, Zi-Wu, Yin-Shen, Mao-You, etc.) in the chart, a luck pillar, or a year. This "knocks out" the star.
- Punishment (刑, xíng) — if the Tianyi branch falls into a "punishment" configuration with other branches. The star is "bound" and loses its power.
- A tomb (墓庫, mù kù) — if the star is "buried" in Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei and that tomb is not "opened" in the Da Yun, the help doesn't arrive.
- Voided (空亡 (kōng wáng — "emptiness"), Kong Wang) — falling into "the void," a special zone of the chart where elements lose their power.
When help doesn't arrive
- Tianyi is present, but the person lives in isolation, doesn't socialize, doesn't go out — there's no one around to help them. The star "sleeps."
- Tianyi is in the chart, but the Day Master is too weak or too strong — there's no proper "tuning" to receive the help.
- Tianyi is in "the void" (Kong Wang) — help is promised but doesn't arrive. Friends promise to help but forget. Mentors appear, then vanish.
- A chart with a strong "Jie Sha" (劫煞, robbery) star or "Yang Ren" (羊刃 (yáng rèn — "ram's blade"), blade) star — Tianyi can lead into traps, fake mentors, con artists disguised as rescuers.
6 Tianyi's combinations with other stars
Tianyi's power grows many times over when it combines with other favorable stars. And conversely, it is lost when it crosses paths with destructive ones.
Favorable combinations
- Tianyi + Wenchang (文昌 (wén chāng — "star of literary flourishing")) — "the heavenly mentor + the literary star." A teacher arrives and opens up an academic path. Careers in science, education, literature.
- Tianyi + Tian De (天德) + Yue De (月德) — "a triple heavenly blessing." A very rare and powerful configuration. A life under the protection of higher powers.
- Tianyi + Jiangxing (將星 (jiāng xīng — "the general star"), general star) — a leader with helpers. A military commander, the head of a large company, a politician who always has "their own retinue" and patrons from above.
- Tianyi + Huagai (華蓋 (huá gài — "flower canopy"), canopy) — a wise loner whom others come to for advice, and who is themselves helped by higher powers. Often mystics, healers, spiritual teachers.
- Tianyi + Tianyi (double) — a double blessing. Help arrives from two sides at once — for example, from both family and career mentors.
Difficult combinations
- Tianyi + Tao Hua (桃花 (táo huā — "peach blossom"), peach blossom) — help arrives through romantic connections. The partner becomes the Guiren. This can be a blessing, or a curse, if the connection is questionable.
- Tianyi + Yi Ma (驛馬 (yì mǎ — "the traveling horse"), horse star) — help arrives through travel, moves, and foreigners. Very favorable for those working abroad.
- Tianyi + Yang Ren (羊刃, blade) — ambivalent. Help arrives, but through harsh, sometimes painful circumstances. A "surgeon" who saves you while causing pain.
7 Activation of Tianyi in the Da Yun and the year pillars
The most practically important part is the activation of Tianyi in the luck pillars (大運 (dà yùn — "luck pillars")) or in the year pillars (流年). This means that during a certain period of life the star "lights up," and the carrier receives help especially vividly.
Activation through the luck pillars
If one of your 10-year luck pillars carries a branch that is Tianyi Guiren for your Day Master, this is a "decade of noble help." During this time:
- The right people appear.
- The career gains patronage from above.
- Financial help arrives when it's needed.
- In critical situations, luck arrives "magically."
- You may meet a spouse who becomes a Guiren for life.
Activation through the years (流年)
When a specific year carries the Tianyi branch — for example, 2025 (the year Si 巳) for a Ren Day Master or a Gui Day Master — that year becomes a "year of rescue." Especially if the person found themselves in a crisis the year before. Tianyi arrives "right on time."
Activation through combinations of branches
Tianyi can also "activate" through a combination with a branch already present in the chart. For example, if a Bing Day Master has You (Tianyi) in the chart, and Chen arrives in the Da Yun, they combine (辰酉合金), and Tianyi is strengthened. These are very subtle techniques that a BaZi master reads from the full chart.

Carriers of an active Tianyi Guiren often choose (or are "led by" life into) professions where they themselves become such "heavenly helpers" for others.
Ideal fields for Tianyi carriers
- Medicine and healing — especially the fields where people are "rescued": intensive care, oncology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, palliative care.
- Social work, charity — helping orphans, the homeless, the severely ill.
- Mentoring, coaching, guidance — business consulting, life coaching, academic tutoring.
- Psychology and psychotherapy — people literally "come to them" in a hard moment.
- Law, especially advocacy and human-rights work — defending those who can't defend themselves.
- Education, especially working with troubled teens or the gifted — opening a path for others.
- Diplomacy, international organizations — mediation in crises.
- HR and recruiting — literally "finding people jobs," i.e., acting as Guiren.
- Financial consulting, business banking — saving businesses from bankruptcy.
- Religious and spiritual service — priests, monks, spiritual mentors.
- Journalism that exposes injustice — "rescuing" through information.
- Venture capital, angel investing — literally "business angels."
Professions where Tianyi is especially valued by clients
A carrier of a strong Tianyi attracts trust. So in fields where trust is the foundation of the sale, they become stars:
- Private bankers for VIP clients.
- Family lawyers with a client base built over decades.
- Personal physicians to well-known people.
- Matchmakers and marriage counselors.
- Family elders whom everyone comes to for decisions.
9 Famous carriers of Tianyi (abstract case types)
While the actual charts of specific celebrities are a contested subject, BaZi masters recognize typical case types in which a strong Tianyi Guiren was clearly at work:
The "Mother Teresa" case
Chart type: a missionary, a spiritual mentor, whose life was a chain of "rescues" of others — and of their own rescue from severe trials. Such people often have Tianyi in both the hour pillar and the day pillar at once, turning their whole life into the service of a "heavenly helper."
The "healer everyone comes to" case
The archetype of the old Eastern doctor, a healer in traditional medicine. People come to them when modern medicine hasn't helped. Such people have Tianyi in the month pillar plus Huagai (the canopy) — the configuration of a wise loner with a healing mission.
The "philanthropist tycoon" case
A businessman who, upon growing rich, founded a charitable fund. Such people often combine Tianyi with wealth stars and the Tian De star, creating the pattern "received in order to give."
The "universal mentor" case
The archetype of a person whom both presidents and beggars come to for advice. Surprisingly, cases show that such people often come from humble origins, yet have "a face that says 'come to me.'" This is Tianyi at work in the day pillar.
The "saved at the last moment" case
Not only do such people become Guiren themselves, but their own biography holds a chain of stories of "miraculous rescue." An illness caught by chance. An accident narrowly avoided. A financial collapse averted by an unexpected phone call. Such people often have Tianyi activated in several luck pillars in a row.
10 Practical application — what to do if you have Tianyi
Knowing that Tianyi is in your chart isn't passive information. It's a tool. Here's how to work with it.
If Tianyi is present and active
- Don't close yourself off. The main mistake of Tianyi carriers is isolation. If you stay home, trust no one, and talk to no one, help won't find you. Open the door.
- Ask for help. Tianyi doesn't work if you stubbornly "do everything yourself." That's not "weakness," it's the star's activation. Learn to say "I need help."
- Listen to your intuition about people. If someone appears "strangely" in your life, pay attention. It might be the very Guiren.
- Be grateful. Don't take the help for granted. Gratitude is Tianyi's "fuel." Those who don't give thanks lose the star.
- Become a Guiren yourself. Help others without expecting anything back. This multiplies the power of your own Tianyi.
- Use the activation period (Da Yun). If your Tianyi activates in your current decade, this is the time for bold decisions, because "support from above" is with you.
If Tianyi is absent or broken
- Activate it through your environment. Find a mentor, a guide, a therapist — literally "hire" a Guiren.
- Wear the Tianyi branch. Talismans with the corresponding Chinese zodiac animal (for a Ren Day Master, the Rabbit or the Snake, and so on).
- Activate the Tianyi direction in Feng Shui. Place your workspace or sleeping spot facing the direction that corresponds to your Day Master's Tianyi branch.
- Move into fields where a Guiren shows up naturally. Military service, government structures, large corporations with mentorship programs, academia — "heavenly mentors" turn up more often there.
- Cultivate "the face of a Guiren" yourself — help, teach, support. By the mirror principle, helpers will come to you too.
In the classical Ziping school system of BaZi, the Tianyi Guiren star is considered "first among the noble" (第一吉神) not because it is the most "magical," but because it recalls the most important principle: destiny unfolds through people. Not through abstract luck, not through "stars," but through a specific person who turned out to be in the right place at the right moment.
If Tianyi is in your chart, that doesn't mean your life will be easy. It means that at the hardest moments, you will not be left alone. Someone will lend a hand. Sometimes an old acquaintance. Sometimes a complete stranger. Sometimes a circumstance that looks like a miracle. Your task is to be open, grateful, and ready to receive.
And if you don't have Tianyi, don't despair. The Shen Sha stars are just one layer of the chart. Far more important is the overall structure, the balance of the five elements, the luck pillars. And even without Tianyi, a person can build an "artificial network of noble people" around themselves through conscious service, teaching, openness. Tianyi can be born, or it can be grown. Heaven answers to both paths.
