BaZi masters usually call this pair an axis rather than a union. The Tiger 寅 (yín) and the Monkey 申 (shēn) stand opposite each other on the circle of twelve branches, and between them runs the classical Six Clash 六沖 (liù chōng). In addition, both belong to the triple of punishments 寅巳申, which lacks only the Snake. For the compilers of "compatibility tables" that is enough to raise a red flag. In practice the picture is more interesting: a clash in BaZi means first of all movement, and many of the most vivid, eventful passages in people's lives run along exactly such axes.

Below we look at what exactly collides in these two branches, how this pair differs from other "conflicting" ones, and how to handle it without drama. As always, the birth-year sign is one branch out of four, about one-eighth of a chart. The Tiger and the Monkey in the year pillars set a family backdrop but do not decide the fate of a couple: you need to look at the day branches and at everything else, discussed at the end.

A separate section covers 2027. For both signs it is a neutral year, yet the monthly calendar of the pair turns out to be eventful.

1 What collides in 寅 and 申

A clash of branches is in fact a clash of their hidden stems. In the Tiger 寅 the hidden ones are 甲 (jiǎ, Yang Wood, the main one), 丙 (bǐng, Yang Fire) and 戊 (wù, Yang Earth). In the Monkey 申 the hidden ones are 庚 (gēng, Yang Metal, the main one), 壬 (rén, Yang Water) and 戊. Look at the pairs: 甲 and 庚 are the classical stem clash, Metal chopping Wood. 丙 and 壬 are Fire and Water, also opposition. Only 戊 is shared. So at one point of the circle two strong, mature elements meet that, in everything except Earth, speak different languages.

The element of the main branch also acts: the Metal of 申 controls the Wood of 寅. In a relationship this ratio shows itself as a cutting, critical, precise partner beside a growing, impulsive one. The Monkey tends to see imperfections, draw conclusions and offer edits, while the Tiger perceives edits as an attack on his initiative. But on the other hand it is Metal that gives Wood its shape, and in the hands of a good craftsman, a sculptor or a gardener, the axe becomes a tool of creation.

2 A clash as movement

In the classics the branches 寅 and 申 belong to the "four births" (四生, sì shēng), the beginnings of the seasons: 寅 opens spring, 申 opens autumn. A clash of two beginnings is a situation in which neither side yields by definition, yet neither freezes. The branches 寅申巳亥 are also called the "lands of the horse" (四馬地): it is on them that the travel star 驛馬 (yì mǎ), the Traveling Horse, falls. For people of the 寅午戌 group it stands at 申; for the 申子辰 group, at 寅. So many practitioners connect the clash of this axis with moves, trips, a change of places and work in different cities; this is an observation of schools, not a law. More in the article on the Traveling Horse star.

At the level of a couple this can show itself in different ways. For some it is the stormy character of the relationship: passion, quarrels and quick reconciliation. For others it is physical distance: both are often on the road, they see each other in snatches, but between meetings they keep a strong bond. For others still, it is change in the way of life itself: moves, a change of job, sudden decisions. What exactly shows depends on where in the chart these branches stand. We gathered general information on clashes in the article on the Six Clashes 沖, and on the triple of punishments in the article on Punishments 刑.

A clash is not a break. In the classical texts it is interpreted as a "shift": what stood still comes into motion. For a stagnant couple it can be a medicine; for a fragile one, a strain. That is why 寅申 can be called neither a good nor a bad link: it is an intense link, and it must be read together with the rest of the chart.

3 Love and marriage

In love the Tiger and the Monkey are usually vivid. Their romance often begins swiftly: a challenge, an argument, a joke, a mutual interest in someone who does not bend. Both are independent, and neither likes to be led. For the first year or two such couples live as if on a stage, but then it turns out that you have to build daily life together, and daily life breaks the script.

The main difficulty that such couples describe most often is that the Tiger expects directness while the Monkey leans toward subtle tactics. The Monkey is cunning in a good way: able to get around difficulties, find loopholes, negotiate. The Tiger perceives going around as distrust. The reverse picture: the Tiger acts directly, and the Monkey sees rudeness in it. As a result both are offended at different things. The way out is to name your intention before acting: "I want this and will do it this way," "I will do it differently, but with the same goal."

Another important observation: in such couples the Monkey's critical streak is easily taken for coldness. If the Tiger hears edits as "I don't like you," it is worth asking a clarifying question. Most often the Monkey is simply thinking aloud. As for the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng): if 寅 and 申 stand in the day branches, the clash lands right in it, and then you should turn to the full chart. 4 Distance, the road, different cities

The axis 寅申 often shows up literally: one partner lives and works in another city, flies often or regularly goes on long trips. For such pairs the classics see no tragedy. Movement that on another axis would lead to a quarrel goes here into geography. If you are a Tiger and a Monkey living at a distance, that is more a natural mode of the pair than a sign of weakness.

What helps in practice. Agree on a rhythm of contact and keep to it: a short daily contact matters more than a long weekly one. Plan meetings in advance, because spontaneity at a distance turns into disappointment. Discuss not only affairs but mood: the Monkey, used to a businesslike tone, sometimes forgets that the Tiger is waiting for words about feelings. And be sure to ask yourself about the future: movement needs a purpose (a shared city, a shared project), otherwise the axis turns into endless farewells.

5 Friendship and work

In a working context the 寅申 axis often turns out to be productive. The Tiger generates direction; the Monkey optimizes and finds workarounds. Good fields for such a pair are consulting, development, trade, engineering, projects needing speed and a critical eye. Together they can bring an idea to a working prototype in the time other pairs are only starting their meetings.

The risk arises when there is no shared goal and each pulls the project in his or her own direction. Then the Tiger accuses the Monkey of maneuvering, and the Monkey accuses the Tiger of stubbornness. For a long partnership three things are needed: written agreements (who is responsible for what and how income is split), a regular review of results and each person's right of veto in their own zone. With such a frame the clash becomes a competition of ideas. We wrote about what to check in partners' charts in the article on business compatibility.

6 Typical conflicts and ways to defuse them

Criticism against initiative. The Tiger hears the Monkey's edits as a ban. Agree that edits come after the initiative has been brought to a draft, not instead of it.

Directness against maneuver. The Tiger dislikes workarounds; the Monkey cannot do without them. Agree on the goal aloud and leave the method to the doer.

A struggle for independence. Neither likes to be subordinate. Divide zones, not positions: "money is mine, travel is yours."

Distance and the road. If the pair is often traveling, set up rituals of contact: a daily call, a shared calendar, a mandatory meeting once a month.

Sharp reactions. A clash of branches sometimes shows itself in flashes. A cooling rule: "nothing important in writing while angry."

7 2027: a neutral year with a lively calendar

The year 2027 is 丁未 (the Fire Goat), beginning around 4 February (立春), and Tai Sui 太歲 is the branch 未. Neither the Tiger 寅 nor the Monkey 申 has a direct link with it, so for both signs the year is neutral. The stem 丁 adds Fire: the Tiger's Wood gives birth to it, that is, gives away strength, while for the Monkey's Metal it is the controlling element (Fire melts Metal), so the year asks a little more composure of the Monkey. Details for each sign: the Tiger in the Goat year and the Monkey in the Goat year.

The monthly calendar of the pair, however, is noticeably lively, because the axes 寅申 and 寅巳申 are regularly stirred by the branches of the months.

Month in 2027What it highlights
壬寅, 4 Feb – 5 MarThe Tiger's month: 寅申 collide, felt more by the Monkey. Changes of plan and trips are possible.
乙巳, 6 May – 5 JunThe Snake arrives: 寅巳申 assembles in full (if both signs are present), plus the harm 寅巳 for the Tiger.
戊申, 8 Aug – 7 SepThe Monkey's month: the clash 申寅 is now felt more by the Tiger. A time for careful wording and for postponing hard decisions.
己酉, 8 Sep – 7 OctFor the Monkey, half of the autumn gathering 申酉戌 (Metal); neutral for the Tiger.
辛亥, 7 Nov – 6 DecFor the Tiger, 寅亥 is a harmony and a destruction; for the Monkey, 申亥 is a harm.

The month 乙巳 is built more cleverly than the table suggests. For the Monkey, 巳 is at once the harmony 巳申合 and the destruction 巳申破: the classics read this as "closeness with conditions." It happens that in May the pair agrees on something important, and a couple of weeks later finds out that each understood the agreement in their own way. So anything agreed in that month is better written down. For the Tiger the same weeks bring the harm 寅巳, that is, small grievances out of nowhere.

There are calm windows too. In 丙午 (6 June to 6 July) the Tiger gets half of the Fire triple 寅午戌 while the Monkey lives evenly: a good time for a vacation for two and for conversations that were postponed in spring. In 庚戌 (8 October to 6 November) the Tiger gets support through 寅戌 and the Monkey through the autumn row 申酉戌; it is a convenient month to sum up the year and plan the next. The practical rule for all of 2027 is simple: do not schedule major decisions about a move, a wedding or shared money for 壬寅 and 戊申, when the axis 寅申 is excited most strongly.

8 How to live on the axis: practical things

The simplest thing is to know your risk zone. In a couple on the axis 寅申 it is, as a rule, one and it repeats. It may be money, jealousy of other people's attention, or the question "who makes the decision." Name it aloud and agree how you will act when it flares up.

Then a few rules. First, do not give the clash a mystical meaning. If the couple has quarrels, they are usually quarrels about money, daily life and respect, not an "effect of branches." The branches merely explain where your sensitive spots are. Second, use the movement: set shared goals that require action, trips, study, something new. A couple on the axis 寅申 lives longer in project mode than in rest mode. Third, protect personal territory: each of you needs your own work, your own room, your own friends. Fourth, do not postpone conversations that are piling up: the accumulation of irritation is exactly what is most dangerous in this link.

And finally, remember that the "punishment" 寅巳申 in full arises only with three branches. If the couple's charts have no Snake, and the Snake appears only as a month (乙巳 in 2027), it is a temporary strengthening, not a permanent background. If you do not have your chart yet, a free chart is a quick way to see which branches you actually carry.

9 Why the birth-year sign is only the top layer

Take two Monkeys. One has the Day Master 壬, Yang Water: flexible, resourceful, with many inner resources. The other has the Day Master 庚: direct, hard, chopping. Beside the same Tiger the first will behave as an ally, the second as an opponent. The sign is the same, but the people are different.

So real compatibility is checked on the five levels described in the compatibility guide: Day Masters, day branches as Spouse Palaces, needed elements, relationship stars, Luck Pillars 大運. BaZi gives no compatibility percentages. A pair with "difficult" branches can be sturdier than an "ideal" one, because it knows its thin places and builds mechanisms for relieving tension into the union in advance.

10 Frequently asked questions

Are the Tiger and the Monkey incompatible?

Between 寅 and 申 there is the clash 六沖 and the incomplete punishment 寅巳申. This is an intense but not necessarily destructive link. The conclusion comes from comparing the full charts, not only the birth-year signs.

What does a clash mean in BaZi?

It is dynamics, not a sentence: changes, moves, a revision of agreements. For a stagnant situation a clash can be a useful shift.

How does the Goat year affect this pair?

Neither the Tiger nor the Monkey has a direct link with 未, so the year is neutral. The notable months are 壬寅 (from 4 February), 乙巳 (from 6 May) and 戊申 (from 8 August).

Can they work together?

Yes, with clear zones of responsibility, written agreements and a regular review of results. The combination of the Tiger's speed and the Monkey's critical eye gives strong results.

What should we do if we quarrel often?

Set cooling-off rules, speak about intention before acting and keep personal territory. If the quarrels repeat in one pattern, it makes sense to look at both full charts.
