Picture a typical morning in a household where he is a Tiger and she is a Dragon. Or the other way around. One has already sketched three weekend plans and recorded a voice message for the contractor. The other is quietly sorting through documents, because an answer is impossible until the whole picture is visible. From outside it looks like different tempos, but really it is a difference of function: the Tiger 寅 (yín) launches, the Dragon 辰 (chén) collects and keeps. Spring in the cycle of branches first opens, then fills, and these two branches stand for the beginning and the consolidation.
Classically there is no harmony, no clash and no harm between them. What connects them is the Directional Combination 三會 (sān huì) 寅卯辰: the Tiger, Rabbit and Dragon make up the Wood of spring, but in our pair the Rabbit is absent. The rest is decided by the elements: by the five-element cycle, the Tiger's Wood controls the Dragon's Earth. That sounds like a relationship of "the one who presses and the one who is pressed," but reality is subtler, because the Dragon is not plain Earth.
As always in these articles, a caveat: these are birth-year signs, one layer out of the eight characters of a chart. They set the general background but do not replace a comparison of two full charts. At the end we show where that comparison comes in.
1 Two branches, one season
In the circle of twelve branches 辰 stands third in the spring row, right after the Rabbit. It is the end of spring, a period when growth has been gathered and summer has not yet arrived: roughly 5 April to 5 May by the solar calendar. Unlike the Tiger and Rabbit, which are pure Wood, the Dragon counts as Yang Earth, but Earth of a special kind: a "storehouse" (庫, kù). It has three hidden stems: 戊 (wù, Yang Earth, the main one), 乙 (yǐ, Yin Wood) and 癸 (guǐ, Yin Water). The classics call 辰 the water storehouse and add that the residual qi of spring Wood lies here too.
This explains why the Tiger–Dragon pair cannot be reduced to the formula "Wood beats Earth." The Dragon keeps in reserve the very things that nourish the Tiger: Water (癸) feeds Wood, and its own 乙 speaks the same language as the Tiger's 甲. The Dragon both restrains the Tiger and supplies him. In a good arrangement this works like the relationship of a founder and a strategist-accountant: one rushes ahead, the other knows where the company keeps the resources for the next step.
| 寅 Tiger | 辰 Dragon | |
|---|---|---|
| Main element | Yang Wood | Yang Earth (storehouse) |
| Hidden stems | 甲, 丙, 戊 | 戊, 乙, 癸 |
| Phase of the season | early spring | late spring |
| Role in the pair | initiative, breakthrough | accumulation, holding, resources |
| Elemental relation | Wood controls Earth: the Tiger "presses" on the Dragon, but 乙 and 癸 inside the Dragon work for the Tiger | |
2 The character of the pair: who pushes whom
On the surface the pair looks unequal. The Tiger speaks loudly; the Dragon answers with weight. The Tiger has the energy of pressure; the Dragon has mass, and mass of that kind moves reluctantly. But once the Dragon has moved, it is hard to stop. These two often see in each other what they lack themselves. The Tiger likes that the household can be left with the Dragon without worry. The Dragon values that the Tiger actually initiates instead of talking about intentions.
But the hidden problem is plain to see as well: control. In the cycle Wood "breaks" Earth, and the pair is prone to a situation in which one pushes and the other resists. The Tiger says "let's do it right now," the Dragon goes defensive, and later it turns out the Dragon was right. Or the reverse: the Dragon stubbornly brakes, the Tiger does it his own way and suffers the consequences. Neither side is to blame; it is the mechanics of the elements. To live with it you need an agreement about roles, not a search for who is "right." It helps to write down on paper who is responsible for what: who decides about money, who about time, who about people. Until the list exists, roles are distributed by themselves, and each person believes the other is interfering in their area.
There is one more subtlety. Because of the seasonal combination 寅卯辰, the pair shares a "spring" flavor: an interest in growth, learning and novelty. The Tiger and the Dragon rarely get bored together at the start. Boredom usually comes from repetition, which is why a change of scene matters: travel, moves, new tasks. There is a classical detail too: for the Dragon (the 申子辰 group) the branch 寅 serves as the Traveling Horse 驛馬 (yì mǎ, the "post horse") when counted from the birth year. Some practitioners see this as the reason a Dragon more readily decides on moves and trips beside a Tiger. More in the article on the Traveling Horse star.
3 Love and marriage
In a romantic couple the Tiger usually lights the fire and the Dragon keeps the flame even. If the partners' rhythms are close, the relationship can be strong: the Dragon has the patience to survive the Tiger's flare-ups, and the Tiger has the generosity to make up for the Dragon's stubbornness. In pairs where the Tiger is the man and the Dragon the woman, the image of "a strong woman beside a charismatic leader" often appears; in the reverse arrangement the Dragon man often takes on the substance of life and the Tiger woman its dynamics. These are observations, not laws: in practice everything comes down to the Day Masters.
What is definitely worth knowing about the everyday side: the Dragon tolerates pressure on matters of honor and reputation poorly, and the Tiger tolerates inaction poorly. When the Tiger reads the Dragon's pause as indecision, he pushes, and when the Dragon reads the Tiger's drive as disrespect, it withdraws. The way out is prosaic: say aloud what silence means for you. "I need a night to digest this" is a perfectly normal sentence that saves several quarrels a year.
If the day branches in the partners' charts form exactly this link, with the Tiger and the Dragon in the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng), the couple gets that spring background at the level of closeness. If 寅 and 辰 stand only in the year pillars, the influence is weaker and amounts to a family backdrop: how you grew up and what you expect from a union. For more on how the palace reads in marriage, see marriage in BaZi.
4 Friendship, work, business
This is one of the most practical working pairs among the "neutral" ones. The Tiger opens the market, negotiates and reaches out to people. The Dragon is in charge of the system: accounts, contracts, data storage, processes. The classic example is a studio run by two people, where one sells and the other ensures delivery. It is in this role that the Dragon is valued: it is not afraid of long deadlines.
The risk sits at the border of authority. If the Tiger begins to decide the Dragon's questions of storage and bookkeeping ("it's fine, we'll sort it out later"), a hidden debt accumulates in the form of papers, taxes and documents. If the Dragon brakes the Tiger's new ideas too hard, the company does not grow. A clear zone of responsibility and a weekly meeting with a short agenda settle it: what we launch, what we close, what is missing. We collected more on what to check in future partners' charts in the article on business compatibility.

"You're pressing" and "you're braking." Set up two-stage decisions: first the Tiger formulates the idea, then the Dragon has a week to criticize it, after which the decision is made on the results, with no rewinding.
The Dragon's pride. 辰 often carries a vivid sense of its own status. Criticize the work, never the person. The Tiger usually does this easily, but it is worth remembering.
Hoarding and spending. The Dragon saves; the Tiger spends on the go. Split the budget: a shared part, a personal part for each, and a "free spending fund" with no reports.
Different ideas of urgency. For the Tiger "urgent" means today; for the Dragon it means by the end of the month. Name three levels: "on fire," "this week," "this quarter."
Different ways to rest. The Tiger rests by moving, the Dragon through quiet and order. Alternate weekends: one active, one at home.
6 Tiger and Dragon in 2027: the Fire Goat 丁未
The year 2027 is 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat. It begins around 4 February 2027 (立春), and Tai Sui 太歲 is the branch 未. For both of our signs there are no direct links with this branch, so it is a neutral year. This pair has no harmony with 未, as the Horse or the Rabbit does, and no clash 丑未, as the Ox does: they watch the year almost from the audience.
But there is the element. The stem 丁 (dīng) is Yin Fire, and the branch 未 contains Earth, so the year as a whole "warms and dries." For the Tiger's Wood it is a year of expenditure (Wood gives birth to Fire), so drive is best spent on what truly matters. For the Dragon's Earth, by contrast, the year's Fire is a nourishing element: Fire gives birth to Earth. The Dragon usually has more chances this year to consolidate what has been done, and the Tiger has more temptations to scatter himself.
Month by month, this pair meets several noticeable points.
| Month in 2027 | What it highlights |
|---|---|
| 壬寅, 4 Feb – 5 Mar | The Tiger's month: 寅 is doubled and forms half of the seasonal gathering with the Dragon. A good window for launches. |
| 甲辰, 5 Apr – 5 May | The Dragon's month: for the Tiger, 寅 and 辰 give half of the gathering; for the Dragon, 辰 is doubled, which the classics assign to self-punishment 自刑 (zì xíng). Not a cause for alarm, only a reminder not to overload yourself. |
| 乙巳, 6 May – 5 Jun | For the Tiger, the harm 寅巳 and half of the punishment 寅巳申; the Dragon is neutral. |
| 戊申, 8 Aug – 7 Sep | For the Tiger, the clash 寅申; for the Dragon, 申辰, half of the Water triple 申子辰. |
| 己酉, 8 Sep – 7 Oct | For the Dragon, the Six Harmony 辰酉; the Tiger is neutral. |
| 庚戌, 8 Oct – 6 Nov | For the Dragon, 辰戌 is a clash 冲; for the Tiger, 寅戌 is half of the triple 寅午戌. Noticeable movement, especially for the Dragon. |
| 壬子, 7 Dec 2027 – 5 Jan 2028 | Water: 子辰 form half of the triple 申子辰 for the Dragon, and for the Tiger Water feeds Wood. A calm, restorative month. |
The table shows an asymmetry. The Tiger's uneven months (乙巳 and especially 戊申) fall at the end of spring and the end of summer, the Dragon's in autumn, when 庚戌 collides with its branch. They are almost never shaken both at once, which is useful: while one is in motion, the other can hold the house. In summer the Dragon should take on the paperwork and planning, because in August it is easier for the Tiger to leave or reshuffle plans than to sit over an estimate. In autumn the roles swap: in October the Dragon more often revisits agreements and decisions, and then the Tiger is better off not rushing it for answers but taking on the outside errands. The calmest months for joint decisions are 己酉, when the Dragon has the harmony 辰酉, and 壬子, when Water gathers for the Dragon and feeds the Tiger's Wood.

7 Why the birth-year sign does not answer the question
Take two Dragons. One has the Day Master 戊, and Earth is the foundation of that personality; this one really is a "warehouse" and a practical person. The other has the Day Master 乙 and a lot of Wood in the chart; inside, that Dragon is flexible, gentle and finely sensitive, although born in the same year. Beside a Tiger the first will behave as a pillar, the second as an ally in growth. The same pair of signs creates two different pairs of people.
That is why a professional assessment rests on five checks, described in detail in the compatibility guide:
Day Masters 日主: how the elements of the two "selves" relate to each other.
Day branches, the Spouse Palaces: whether there is a harmony, clash, harm or punishment between them.
Needed elements: what each person receives from the other in the chart's balance.
Relationship stars: temperament and boundaries.
Luck Pillars 大運: whether the rises and pauses coincide.
There is no percentage here. There is a map: where the pair has support, where the work zone is, and where you simply have to agree in advance.
8 What to check yourself
A practical set for anyone who wants to understand their couple without a consultation. Find out the day branch and the month branch for both of you. If one has 戌 there and the other 辰, that is the clash 辰戌; read about it in the article on clashes between branches and work out which area of life it lands on. See whether there is Metal and Fire in the charts: in a pair with a lot of Wood on both sides, stability comes precisely from them, while Water only feeds the extra Wood. And look at the periods: if one of you is in a decade of active growth and the other in a long pause, an asymmetry appears in the pair, and it is better to agree about it in advance.
And last, check the Day Masters. If the Tiger has 甲 and the Dragon has 己, there is a stem combination 甲己合 between them, and personal attraction may prove stronger than anything said about the signs. If one has 庚 and the other 甲, Metal chops Wood at the level of the "selves" themselves, and the agreements about roles are needed twice over. This is exactly the depth that the birth-year sign does not show. A free chart is a quick way to see your own: calculate it here.
9 Frequently asked questions
Are the Dragon and the Tiger a good match?
Between 寅 and 辰 there is no harmony, clash, harm or punishment. It is a neutral pair with a shared spring season 寅卯辰. The elements and the full charts decide.
Is it true that the Tiger suppresses the Dragon?
By the control cycle Wood does control Earth, but the Dragon stores hidden 乙 and 癸, which support Wood. So in practice everything depends on each person's role and on the Day Masters.
What will the Goat year 2027 bring this pair?
Neither the Tiger nor the Dragon has a direct link with 未, so the year is neutral. For the Tiger it is more a year of spending energy, for the Dragon one of consolidating what has been done. Notable points are the months 甲辰 (from 5 April) and 庚戌 (from 8 October).
Can they run a business together?
Yes, if roles are distributed: the Tiger launches and sells, the Dragon is responsible for the system and resources. The risk lies in unclear boundaries and unspoken expectations.
Is this the final answer on compatibility?
No. The birth-year sign is one of eight characters. The couple is finally assessed by Day Masters, day branches, elements, stars and periods.
