A three-legged table stands because of all three legs. Remove one and it still stands, but differently: you slip a piece of cardboard under it and put the cups down more carefully. Something like that image comes up when BaZi looks at the Tiger 寅 and the Dog 戌. These two branches belong to the classical Three Harmony 三合 (sān hé) 寅午戌 (yín-wǔ-xū), the Fire alliance. The third leg, the Horse 午, is absent from the pair, and that defines almost everything said below.

A Three Harmony is the warmest of the branch relationships: a shared aim, shared fuel, a feeling of "we are on the same side". When two of the three branches are present, it is called a half-triangle, 半三合 (bàn sān hé). The pull exists, but it does not realize itself: a third branch is needed, and a year, a month or a Luck Pillar can bring it. That is why the Tiger and Dog pair is interesting: its strength depends on circumstances and on time.

Here we talk about year signs, meaning one branch out of eight. It is the top layer: it describes a general outline but does not replace the charts. Still, it works as a place to start a conversation.

1 Where Fire comes from in Wood and Earth

At first glance it looks odd: the Tiger is Wood, the Dog is Earth, and the alliance is called "Fire". The explanation lies in the hidden stems. Inside 寅 are 甲 (jiǎ, main, Wood), 丙 (bǐng, Fire) and 戊 (wù, Earth). Inside 戌 are 戊 (main, Earth), 辛 (xīn, Metal) and 丁 (dīng, Fire). So both branches hold a reserve of Fire: the Tiger a bright 丙, the Dog a smoldering 丁. In the triangle 寅午戌 Fire moves in order: it is born in 寅 (where Wood kindles it), reaches its peak in 午, and goes into storage in 戌. The Dog is the "Fire storehouse", autumn earth in which fire is kept like coals in a stove.

As an image: the Tiger lights the campfire, the Horse holds the strongest flame, the Dog keeps the heat. Without the Horse the flame is not at maximum, but the lighting and the keeping are already linked. That is why a pair of these two signs feels a commonality of tasks and "one direction", though a bright flare is not always there.

2 Elements and the character of the link

By element, Wood controls Earth: 寅 (Wood) stands above 戌 (Earth). This is a second layer, running in parallel with the Three Harmony. On one side there is a shared Fire nature; on the other, the Tiger's habit of pressing and leading and the Dog's habit of standing its ground. The Dog is dense, dry earth that is not inclined to yield; the Tiger is rooted Wood that breaks through soil.

The result in life is often this: Tiger and Dog find a common language quickly on big questions (values, fairness, loyalty) and argue about method. Both are direct and both dislike hypocrisy. The Tiger is ready to bend a rule for the goal, the Dog is not. That is where friction appears, and that is where life tests the pair.

3 Love and marriage

If you look for a single formula for this couple, it is "we are on the same side". Tiger and Dog rarely betray each other of their own will. For both, loyalty is a matter of honor. The Tiger protects, the Dog guards, and in a hard situation they stand together without long negotiation. That is serious capital for a marriage, because reliability counts for more than ease.

The difficulties are of another kind. The Dog tends to see the weak link in a close person and to test it for strength. The Tiger may read that test as distrust and react sharply. In good couples both learn early to speak plainly: "this particular thing stings me". Both find an open conflict easier than a silent tension.

What draws them closer:

What wears the bond down: distrust over small things, jealousy without cause, the Tiger's habit of deciding "for both" and the Dog's habit of expecting a trick in advance.

4 Friendship and family

In friendship this tandem is sturdy. The Tiger pulls the Dog out of the familiar zone, and the Dog holds the Tiger back from the most reckless schemes. It is a good "team in spirit": together they take on work that means something to both. Boring formal relationships do not last between them; they need a shared interest.

In a family where one parent is a Tiger and the other a Dog (or a child and a parent), the similarity of values helps, but remember that the Dog reacts more strongly to injustice and the Tiger more strongly to restriction. A Tiger child with a Dog parent may feel there is too much "you may not", and a Dog child with a Tiger parent that there is too much "let's risk it".

5 How to live in a half-triangle

When a couple has the pull but not the closure, it helps to do for yourselves what the "third branch" would do. The Horse in 寅午戌 stands for publicity, movement and a bright gesture. So Tiger and Dog couples benefit from going out together: joint projects, trips, events where results can be shown. They need domestic comfort, but if it is the only support, the union gradually becomes quiet and muffled.

The second rule is about tempo. The Tiger is faster, the Dog is more reliable. If the couple sets its clock only by the Tiger, the Dog tires and goes on the defensive. If only by the Dog, the Tiger gets bored and looks for adventure outside the home. A workable scheme: big decisions are made at the Dog's pace (sleeping on it), small reversible ones at the Tiger's pace (fast and without a report). This split regime removes the main share of arguments.

The third rule concerns words. The Dog badly tolerates things left unsaid, the Tiger badly tolerates interrogation. A condition that works for many couples: a question is asked once and gets a direct answer once. No second approaches and no "I told you so".

6 Work and a shared business

For work this pair suits projects where both speed and team loyalty matter. The Tiger launches and sells, the Dog guards reputation and obligations. The strength of the duo is that the partner will not run at the first difficulty.

Problems arise in two places. The first is risk. The Tiger needs excitement, the Dog needs guarantees. The "experiment limit" rule works here: an amount and a period are agreed in advance within which the Tiger may act without approval. The second is control. The Dog tends to check, the Tiger tends not to report. The solution is a short weekly review in a clear format rather than a talk "by mood".

If it is specifically a shared business, look not only at signs but at which functions are stronger in each chart. The Day Master and the Ten Gods show that, and the year sign does not.

What the half-triangle means in your couple

A half-triangle is a blank, not a finished alliance. What actually closes in your pair shows in the eight characters of each partner, and a Couple Compatibility Reading works that out from both charts.

7 The third leg: where the Horse appears in life

The Three Harmony 寅午戌 closes when a Horse 午 appears in a chart or in time. That can be:

When the third branch arrives, the half-triangle becomes a full one, and the shared Fire energy gets an outlet. People usually feel it as a period when "everything comes together": you want to act together, ideas match, each gains resolve. At the same time an excess of Fire can bring a short temper and overheating, so this is an amplification, not "luck", and amplification has to be directed.

If a Horse sits in one of your charts (especially the day pillar, the Spouse Palace), the pair gets a ready triangle on a permanent basis. This is why two people who are Tiger and Dog by year can be either very close or cool to each other. What decides it is not the year but what stands beside it in the charts.

8 Tiger and Dog in 2027

2027 is 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat year, starting with 立春 (lì chūn) around February 4. For the Tiger the branch 未 forms no direct link. For the Dog it is different. Between 戌 and 未 there is a destruction 六破 (liù pò), and together with 丑 they form the punishment 刑 of the triad 丑戌未 (the "ungrateful punishment"). In 2027 the Dog gets two branches of three (戌 and 未), and the backdrop of the year calls for care: it is usually felt as heightened sensitivity to criticism, to other people's promises and to one's own commitments. This is a general backdrop that lands differently on different charts. If your chart contains an Ox 丑, the punishment is assembled more fully, and then it is all the more worth looking at the whole chart.

For the Tiger and Dog couple this means the following. The Dog is more vulnerable in 2027, and it is sensible for the Tiger to show more gentleness than usual, especially in commitments, money and family agreements. On the other hand, the Fire stem 丁 feeds both Fire branches of the triangle, so the sense of a shared aim in the pair does not go away.

Now by months (boundaries within one day). The month 丙午 runs from about June 6 to July 6: the Horse appears in the monthly pillar, and the triangle 寅午戌 completes for the pair. It is a time when shared plans are easier to discuss and both have more drive; at the same time there is a lot of Fire in these weeks, and arguments can easily rise in volume. Right after comes the month 丁未 (July 7 to August 7): the year branch repeats in the month, the 戌未 link sounds louder, and the Dog again needs caution.

The Dog has several more sensitive points. The month 甲辰 (April 5 to May 5) brings 辰戌冲, a direct clash with its branch. The month 己酉 (September 8 to October 7) brings 酉戌害, a harm. The Dog's own month 庚戌 (October 8 to November 6) again links 戌 with 未. And the month 癸丑 (January 6 to February 3, 2028) brings the missing Ox, so the punishment 丑戌未 in the general backdrop is fully assembled. That does not mean something will happen in January 2028, but heavy conversations and big commitments are better not scheduled for these weeks without a look at the Dog's own chart.

The Tiger has its own months. Supportive are 丙午 (half of the Fire triangle) and 辛亥 (November 7 to December 6, the combination 寅亥合). Tense are 乙巳 (May 6 to June 5; 寅巳害 and part of the punishment 寅巳申) and 戊申 (August 8 to September 7; 寅申冲). For the pair the easiest is June, when the same month helps both; harder is autumn, where the Dog has 己酉 and 庚戌 back to back, and the Tiger has not yet recovered from August.

All of this describes a general picture, not a prediction of particular events. How the year lands on your pair is visible from the two charts, especially the day pillars and the current Luck Pillars.

9 Why the year sign is only the top layer

Everything above concerns the year branches. The birth year is the pillar of ancestors and environment, one of eight characters. The real levers of compatibility lie elsewhere, and these are the five checks a practitioner makes with two full charts.

  1. The Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ). What element each has and how they relate: feeding, control, combination.
  2. The day branches, the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮. If the day branches form Six Harmony or Three Harmony, the weight on that side can strengthen the pair's Fire commonality.
  3. Elemental balance: what each chart lacks and who supplies it. A Fire triangle is a gift to people who need Fire, and overheating to people who already have too much.
  4. Links between all pillars: combinations, clashes, punishments, harms and destructions across every pairing, not only in the year.
  5. Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn): whether the next ten years of the two people are in sync.

There is no compatibility percentage in BaZi. There is a map of supports and weak points, and it needs exact dates, preferably birth times as well.

An honest caveat. At the level of signs the Tiger and Dog pair has a warm, loyal outline, but at the level of full charts it can turn out very tense. Do not decide about marriage or a joint business from two animals. If you want a first look at two dates, use the compatibility tool, and read about the method in the five layers of BaZi compatibility.

10 Frequently asked questions

Are Tiger and Dog compatible?

On the branch level 寅 (yín) and 戌 (xū) belong to the Three Harmony triangle 寅午戌 (Fire), but it is a half-triangle: the Horse 午 is missing. A pull toward shared goals and loyalty is usually well marked. How far it becomes a strong union depends on whether a Horse shows up in the charts or in time.

What is a half-triangle (半三合)?

It is a combination of two branches out of three in a Three Harmony. The attraction and the shared element are there, but a third branch is needed to complete the circuit. It can be brought by a year, month, day, hour, Luck Pillar or a branch in the other partner's chart.

How do Tiger and Dog go through 2027?

For the Tiger the year branch 未 (wèi) forms no link. For the Dog it is a destruction 戌未破 plus two of the three branches of the punishment 丑戌未, so the Dog needs care with commitments and the Tiger benefits from gentleness. June 2027 (the month 丙午) completes 寅午戌: shared plans are easier to discuss in those weeks. This is a backdrop, not a forecast of events.

Who has a harder time in a Tiger and Dog couple?

The Tiger more often struggles with the Dog's checking and control, the Dog with the Tiger's risky decisions. Direct talk and boundaries agreed in advance help both.

Can a couple be judged by year signs alone?

No. The year sign shows one branch out of eight. A reliable conclusion needs two full charts: Day Masters, Spouse Palaces, elemental balance, links between all pillars and Luck Pillars.
