Popular zodiacs usually dispose of the Snake and the Pig in a line: "incompatible." In BaZi it is more complicated and more interesting. The branches 巳 and 亥 do form a clash, 巳亥沖 (sì-hài chōng), one of the six classical 沖. But a "clash" is not the same thing as "hostility." It is about movement, change and a tension that can be put to use.

People in such a pair often tell similar stories: passion starts at speed, arguments are stormy, reconciliations are quick, and they move, change jobs and come back to each other. It is never boring. The question is whether that mode survives everyday life, and what it takes.

We will look at the mechanics of the clash, then at love, friendship and work, and finally at 2027, a year that works differently for each of the two signs, and at why the year sign should never be the only basis for decisions.

1 Anatomy of the clash 巳亥沖

The branches 巳 (Snake) and 亥 (Pig) stand at opposite ends of the zodiac circle, exactly six positions apart. That position is called 沖, chōng, a "blow head-on." When two branches meet in a clash position in a chart, their elements and hidden stems collide directly.

What lies inside these branches? 巳 hides 丙 (Yang Fire, the main one), 庚 (Yang Metal) and 戊 (Yang Earth). 亥 hides 壬 (Yang Water, the main one) and 甲 (Yang Wood). Set the stems against each other and an interesting picture emerges.

From 巳From 亥What lies between them
丙 Yang Fire壬 Yang WaterA direct collision, 壬丙: the sharpest contact
庚 Yang Metal甲 Yang WoodA collision, 甲庚: Metal chops Wood
戊 Yang Earth壬 Yang WaterEarth dams Water: pressure
庚 Yang Metal壬 Yang WaterMetal generates Water: a secret supply
甲 Yang Wood (from 亥)丙 Yang Fire (from 巳)Wood feeds Fire: also a supply

The last two rows deserve attention. The clash 巳亥 is not pure enmity: inside it there are lines along which each side feeds the other. That is why pairs with such a 沖 often have an unusually strong bond, one in which leaving is hard and staying is hard. The contact runs both ways: it presses and it nourishes.

A general description of this type of interaction is in the article on clashes 沖. In brief: a clash shakes loose what was standing still. It breaks familiar patterns and forces movement.

2 Water against Fire: the elements of the pair

The Pig is Water (亥 is "great water," the start of winter) and the Snake is Fire (巳 is the start of summer). Water controls Fire, so if we compare only the elements, the Pig outweighs. In everyday terms, the calmer and deeper partner influences the faster and brighter one.

But as we saw above, each branch holds a hidden supply for the other. Wood from the Pig feeds the Snake's Fire, and Metal from the Snake feeds the Pig's Water. So the picture of "Water puts out Fire" is too crude. It is more like two strong characters who charge and drain each other in turn.

One more detail: 巳 and 亥 are the "traveler" branches, the Traveling Horse 驛馬 (yì mǎ, literally "post horse"). For people whose birth years belong to the trine 亥卯未 (Pig, Rabbit, Goat), the Traveling Horse is the Snake, and for 巳酉丑 (Snake, Rooster, Ox) it is the Pig. So this pair is bound up with the theme of movement, relocation and change of place. More in the material on the star Traveling Horse 驛馬.

3 Love and marriage

In romance the Snake and the Pig start with strong attraction. The Pig is open, generous and sensual; the Snake is mysterious and selective. Each sees in the other what they lack: the Snake likes the warmth and sincerity of the Pig, the Pig likes the depth and concentration of the Snake.

The first problems appear when novelty fades. The Pig expects emotional openness, while the Snake keeps part of itself closed. The Pig senses what is left unsaid and starts pressing with questions; the Snake feels the pressure and withdraws. It is the classic "chase and flight," in which both are right in their own way.

A clash often shows itself as a pair who split and reunite, change city and revise plans. If you recognize yourselves, do not be frightened: in BaZi this is one of the typical patterns of a 沖 in the marriage palace. But what decides whether the clash becomes a cause of separation or an engine of growth is found next door, in the day branches.

4 Friendship

In friendship the clash works more gently. The Snake and the Pig can be excellent companions for occasions when something needs doing together: a trip, a project, an event. In daily life they rarely "live next door": each has an orbit of their own, and meetings are bright rather than regular.

The minus of such a friendship is sharp disagreement. The Pig may say too much in a moment of emotion, and the Snake may strike a person out of its life without explanation. That is why the habit of "cool down and come back" helps this pair as friends: no final decisions on the same day as a quarrel.

5 Work and business

In a business partnership 巳亥沖 often gives a dynamic union with high risk. The Snake brings analysis, strategy and a sense of timing; the Pig brings energy, generosity and the knack of bringing people together. Together they can launch projects quickly and find unexpected moves.

The danger is that each wants to manage in their own way. The Snake tends to decide alone and report afterwards, while the Pig trusts and expects the same, then feels pushed aside. Conflicts in business usually form around control, money and openness of information.

AreaRisk of the clashWhat helps
MoneyDifferent approaches to risk and spendingSeparate budgets by direction, a shared reserve fund
DecisionsThe Snake decides alone, the Pig takes offenseA list of questions discussed only by the two of them
TempoSharp changes of courseCheckpoints once a quarter instead of changes by mood
PeopleDifferent demands on the teamA clear split between hiring and management

6 When the clash works for the pair

In the classical texts a 沖 is judged by context. If a chart lacks movement, with a structure that is too static, many combinations and repetitions, then a clash "breaks the ice" and brings needed change. If a chart already carries a lot of tension, an extra blow adds to the chaos. The same is true of a couple: two calm, stable charts that join through 巳亥沖 gain the liveliness they lacked, while two charts that are already stormy turn into an endless roller coaster.

So one of the first questions for any pair with a 沖 is: what is there more of in your charts, calm or movement? A person with many "earth" branches and a frozen career may experience a Pig partner as liberation. A person whose chart is full of moves and changes will tire of instability next to an equally restless Snake. The year sign says nothing about this, and the chart does.

Another practical observation: a clash is usually felt in the areas of life tied to the position of the branch in the chart. If 巳 and 亥 stand on the day branches, it shows in marriage; if on the month branches, in work and parenting themes; if on the year branches, in relations with the surroundings and the family of origin. So when we say "the Snake and the Pig clash," it matters to specify where.

7 Typical scenes and what stands behind them

"You don't hear me." The Pig speaks emotionally and expects an emotional reply. The Snake answers to the point and without emotion. Both feel misunderstood. Behind it is the difference of Water and Fire: one is healed by conversation, the other by a decision.

A sudden departure. After a quarrel one of the two leaves for a few days to stay with friends or to travel. For a 沖 this is a normal release, not a betrayal. Agree that "leaving" is an acceptable move, and give a date of return.

Jealousy of freedom. The Pig wants closeness and the Snake wants space. If it is not discussed, each will decide that the partner has cooled.

A fight about money. The Pig's generosity against the Snake's calculation. A way out is a separate "joy fund" for each, with no accounting.

8 How to soften the clash: practice

9 The Snake and Pig pair in 2027

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat. The year begins at 立春 (lì chūn) around 4 February 2027. The branch 未 is the Tai Sui 太歲.

For the Snake 巳 the branch 未 belongs to the seasonal Directional Combination 巳午未 (summer). The full picture assembles if 午 is present in a chart, but two signs are already enough for a "fiery" backdrop: energy, initiative, a wish to act. That strengthens the Snake's Fire, and next to the Pig's Water it raises the temperature.

For the Pig 亥 the branch 未 forms a half Three Harmony 亥卯未 (Wood). Without the central branch 卯 the link is weak, but if there is a Rabbit in the chart it becomes more noticeable. The backdrop for the Pig is supportive: help, backing, opportunities. And Wood, as we know, feeds Fire, so it potentially feeds the Snake.

The months when the clash 巳亥 may be felt more sharply are 乙巳 (6 May to 5 June 2027), the Snake's own month, and 辛亥 (7 November to 6 December 2027), the Pig's month, which stands directly opposite the Snake's branch. The dates are approximate, give or take a day. In those periods it is better to avoid abrupt decisions and big conversations at the height of emotion.

Overall, 2027 does not create a new conflict for the pair, but it does not cancel the old one either. Each sign receives support on its own side, and the temptation arises to "win" an argument. It is more useful to use the lift in shared projects. What the year means for each sign separately is in the materials on the Snake and the Pig.

10 Why the year sign is only the top layer

The clash 巳亥 here applies only to the year branches. In a real chart everyone also has month, day and hour branches, and those decide what actually happens between people. You may be born in a Snake year while your day branch forms a combination with someone's day branch. Then the "clash of signs" remains a backdrop, and life follows the combination.

That is why a serious assessment of a pair checks five layers.

  1. Day Masters 日主: how the elements of the two people relate.
  2. Day branches, the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮: combination, clash, punishment or harm.
  3. Useful Gods 用神: who "heals" what in the other's chart.
  4. Relationship stars: Peach Blossom 桃花, and the stars of marriage and solitude.
  5. Luck Pillars 大運: synchronicity of the next ten years.

The final picture is not a compatibility percentage but a map of the link: where the pair is solid and where it needs attention. The method is described in the compatibility guide, and you can build your own chart for free. 11 Frequently asked questions

Why are the Snake and the Pig considered a conflict pair?

The branches 巳 and 亥 stand opposite each other on the zodiac circle and form the clash 巳亥沖. Fire and Water, and the hidden stems, work against each other. It gives a vivid, mobile and often tense dynamic.

Can a Snake and Pig couple be happy?

Yes. A clash describes a style of interaction, not an outcome. Much depends on the day branches, Day Masters and useful elements of both. Some couples with a similar dynamic have lived together for decades precisely because they learned to manage the tension.

How do you soften the 巳亥 clash?

A "buffer" of a third element or a third branch helps. For Fire and Water that is Wood (it is nourished by Water and feeds Fire), or shared projects and space for each person. In practice that means separate areas of responsibility, personal time and an agreement not to discuss sharp questions in the middle of a quarrel.

What does 2027 mean for the Snake and the Pig?

For the Snake, 2027 strengthens the seasonal Fire 巳午未, and for the Pig the branch 未 forms the half trine 亥卯未. Each gets its own "reinforcement," and the clash between the signs turns into a rivalry of two supported sides. This is a general backdrop, not a forecast of events.

What matters more, the clash of signs or the Spouse Palaces?

The Spouse Palace (the day branch) matters more. If the partners' day branches form a combination 合, it can outweigh the clash of the year branches. And the reverse: well-matched signs will not save a couple whose palaces clash.
