Ask anyone familiar with Chinese astrology which pair counts as the most "homey," and they will probably name the Rat and the Ox. On calendar illustrations it looks simple: the Ox pulls the plow while the Rat sits between his horns and points out the road. It is a charming picture, but it has little to do with the real classics, and the classics are more interesting than the picture.
In the theory of earthly branches, 子 (zǐ, the Rat) and 丑 (chǒu, the Ox) are linked in two ways at once: through the Six Harmony 六合 (liù hé, a paired fusion) and through the Directional Combination 三會 (sān huì, a seasonal gathering) 亥子丑 with the Pig 亥 (hài): three winter months in a row. For a couple this is a strong combination, though not an unconditional one. What "sits well" in a diagram still needs deeds and conversations in real life.
One more caveat, this time about 2027. The year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Goat, touches both of you at once: the Rat receives the harm 子未, and the Ox receives a head-on clash, 丑未冲. So an article about this pair has to talk about the union and about the load placed on it. The year sign, meanwhile, stays only the top layer of the picture.
1 What 子丑合 is and where the praise comes from
In the Six Harmony system the branches combine in pairs: 子丑, 寅亥, 卯戌, 辰酉, 巳申, 午未. They are often matched to "Yin and Yang": the Rat (Yang Water) and the Ox (Yin Earth) differ in polarity, and that difference is their attraction. A classical commentary adds that the union of 子丑 "strives" to transform into Earth (合化土, hé huà tǔ), although in real charts the transformation seldom happens: it needs conditions that most people do not have.
Look at the hidden stems. The Rat holds one stem, 癸 (guǐ, Yin Water). The Ox holds three: 己 (jǐ, Yin Earth), 癸 (guǐ) and 辛 (xīn, Yin Metal). The shared 癸 is their "bridge," the water that is present in both. The Ox is damp Earth, a storehouse in which water and metal do not freeze through but wait for spring. That is why people say this pair shares a "cellar": supplies, patience, a reluctance to waste.
The second link, the winter Directional Combination 三會 亥子丑 (Water), is only half present in the pair: the Pig is missing. If a third person in your family or team carries the branch 亥, a "winter triangle" of great elemental strength appears.
2 Love and marriage: two people who know how to preserve
The strongest side of the Rat and Ox pair is domestic reliability. The Ox does not throw words to the wind, and the Rat senses moods and offers a way out at the right time. Usually one of you takes "strategy" (where to live, what to buy) and the other takes "tactics" (how to do it). That is why such unions are good at buying a home, renovating, raising children and saving money.
But let me name at once what the calendars do not mention. At the level of elements, Earth controls Water (土克水, tǔ kè shuǐ). In a pair where the Ox is in effect a "wall" for the Rat's current, a skew appears: the Rat may feel that her mobility is being restricted, and the Ox may feel that he is being "flowed around" and bypassed. This is not conflict in the classical sense but a different sense of rhythm. The Ox likes the order "first A, then B," while the Rat skips.
A practical rule for the marriage: the Ox does better not to take the Rat's flexibility for frivolity, and the Rat does better not to take the Ox's stubbornness for stupidity. In both cases it is an element, not a personal choice. As for money and household, in such pairs the question "who owes whom" seldom comes up, because the shared household is felt as one whole. That is convenient, but it has a flip side: it is easy to miss that one of the two has been carrying more for a long time. Once every six months it is worth naming each person's contribution, including the invisible kind: care, planning, emotional work. If after three years you still remember how cozy the first year felt, the union is working; if the coziness has hardened into routine, it is time to refresh the outside environment (a trip, a change of scene), not the relationship.
3 Work and shared business: who leads, who counts
In a business pair of Rat and Ox the division of roles is almost natural. The Rat finds opportunities, negotiates and feels the market. The Ox carries the work through to the end and holds the quality. For a small business, a workshop, a studio or a family firm this pair is classically regarded as fortunate.
The weak spot is the speed of decisions. The Rat sees three options in a minute; the Ox wants a week to think. If you do not agree in advance, the Rat will "push" and the Ox will dig in. A rule that works: urgent decisions (within a day) are made by the Rat, long-term ones (a year or more) by the Ox. Each gets a territory.
Another tension is money. The Ox thinks in accumulation, the Rat in turnover. One feels that money should lie still, the other that it should "work." The way out is a shared reserve fund that nobody touches, and working capital that the Rat manages by agreed rules.
It is worth saying a word about children in such a family. The union of 子丑 makes a home predictable on the everyday level, and children feel calm in it: the rules are clear and the boundaries stable. The risk lies elsewhere, in an excess of order. If both parents lean toward routine and thrift, a child may miss spontaneity and the right to make mistakes. It helps to leave some "inefficient" pleasures in the family routine on purpose: a trip without a plan, a purchase with no use, a day off without a list. For a pair in which Earth holds Water, that is exactly the fire and air a winter chart lacks.
In money this pair also has a hidden strength. The Ox is a storehouse (丑 stores Metal and Water), the Rat is a living current, and together they can not only save but also release savings into action at the right moment. Trouble arises when the "storehouse" shuts tight: the Ox holds from caution, the Rat does not insist out of tact, and the opportunity passes. Agree on a simple rule: a "spend or hold" decision on large sums is made within a week and not postponed by silence for months.

4 Friendship and family roles
Friendship between a Rat and an Ox rests on long memory. They do not talk often, but when they meet after a year they pick up where they left off. For the Ox this matters: he dislikes "hurrying" a relationship. For the Rat it is convenient: there is no pressure.
In a family where the parent is an Ox and the child a Rat (or the reverse), roles fall out like this: the Ox sets the frame and the Rat tests its strength. An Ox parent should explain rules in words, not in a silent "that's how it is." A Rat parent should remember that an Ox child needs a predictable schedule, and that surprises are better given in portions.
If the pair are siblings or friends since childhood, the Six Harmony shows as a short path to each other in a hard moment: help comes fast and without questions. What they share here is that both detest demonstrative support.
5 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them
The pair stumbles most often on three plots. Tempo. Solution: discuss large purchases and moves on the "week to think" scheme, writing down arguments for and against. Resentment without words. Both the Rat and the Ox can store grievances, but differently: the Rat returns to the subject with hints, the Ox silently "freezes." Solution: agree that a hint already counts as the start of a conversation, and that silence lasting more than a day calls for a direct question. Control. The Ox tends to take responsibility and, with it, the right to decide; the Rat dislikes reporting. Solution: draw a clear line around what each is responsible for, and do not interfere in the other's area.
An elemental piece of advice from the classics: a pair with an excess of cold and damp (winter charts) is helped by Fire, by warmth. In practice that means hot shared dinners, light, sunny holidays and active summer pastimes. But the element you truly need is found from the full charts, not from the sign.
6 Where your Ox or your Rat hides in the chart
A union of branches weighs differently depending on the pillar it sits in. A partner's Rat in your year pillar is a shared family background, similar origins and similar values. In the month pillar it is a union at the level of career and parental family: you understand each other on questions of profession and duty. In the day pillar, the most important place, the Spouse Palace: if you have 子 in the day and your partner has 丑 (or the reverse), the Six Harmony works on the level of everyday life. In the hour pillar it concerns children, later years and shared plans for the future.
So two people who are "Rat and Ox" by year may live in opposite realities. One gets the union in the Spouse Palace, the other only in the year branch, where it remains a beautiful formality. This is exactly where the full chart is needed: the year sign will not tell you on which floor of the house your union stands.
7 2027: the union under load, with 子未 harm and 丑未 clash
In the year 丁未 the year branch 未 (wèi, the Goat) touches your two signs differently. For the Rat it brings harm 六害 (liù hài, 子未害): quiet damage, a weakening of trust. For the Ox it brings a clash 六冲 (liù chōng, 丑未冲), the most visible of the six. Besides that, 丑 and 未 belong to the three-branch punishment 三刑 丑戌未 (the "ungrateful punishment," 無恩之刑) together with the Dog 戌 (xū): if a Dog is present in the charts of the pair, the load rises.
What does this mean for the couple? Both branches are loaded by the same year sign at once, though not equally: for the Ox it is noisy, for the Rat quiet. A typical picture: the Ox leaves the comfort zone more often that year (a job change, a move, a review of plans), and the Rat silently accepts this but accumulates sediment. The union of 子丑 does not go anywhere, it is just harder to feel as "convenient."
Month markers (boundaries ±1 day). The month 丁未 (7 July to 7 August 2027) repeats both the harm and the clash, which makes it a good period for not taking big decisions. The month 癸丑 (6 January to 3 February 2028) still belongs to the 2027 year: in it the branches 子 and 丑 meet face to face and the Six Harmony works, but the clash 丑未冲 is still fresh this year. None of this is a prediction of events, only a general background.
Here is how the branches of the 2027 months fall on your two signs (boundaries ±1 day):
| Month | For the Rat 子 | For the Ox 丑 |
|---|---|---|
| 甲辰, 5 Apr to 5 May | half Three Harmony 申子辰 | destruction 辰丑破 |
| 丙午, 6 Jun to 6 Jul | clash 子午冲 | harm 丑午害 |
| 丁未, 7 Jul to 7 Aug | harm 子未害 | clash 丑未冲 |
| 己酉, 8 Sep to 7 Oct | destruction 子酉破 | half Three Harmony 巳酉丑 |
| 庚戌, 8 Oct to 6 Nov | no link | punishment 丑戌未 (partial) |
| 壬子, 7 Dec to 5 Jan | repetition 伏吟 | Six Harmony 子丑合 |
You can see that the months do not coincide for the two of you: when one has a hard time, the other may have an easier one, and the reverse. For planning the year that is a useful hint: support in June and July is better sought not only from each other but from outside resources.
What to do? Agree beforehand that the changes the Ox starts are not met "with bayonets" by the Rat in the first two weeks. The Rat, for her part, does not stay silent when something displeases her but puts it into words within three days.
8 Why the year sign is only the top layer
A Rat and an Ox by birth year may turn out to be an ideal pair or a heavy one. The reason is simple: the year sign is one of four branches in the chart. The decisive layers lie in the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ), in the day branch (the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮), in the elemental balance and in the Luck Pillars 大運.
An example: you are a Rat by year with 午 in the day, your partner is an Ox by year with 子 in the day. The year signs are friendly, while the Spouse Palaces clash, 子午冲. In reality such a pair lives vividly and argumentatively, not "quietly and conveniently." Or the other way round: both have 子 and 丑 in the day while the year is further from a union, and it is exactly that pair that turns out to be the most stable.
That is why serious work checks compatibility through five layers on two full charts. There are no percentages: the output is a description of where you lean on each other and where conscious work is needed.
9 Frequently asked questions
Is it true that the Rat and the Ox are an ideal pair?
In classical theory 子丑 is a Six Harmony, one of the gentlest unions of branches. But "ideal" depends on the other seven characters of the chart. The year sign is only the beginning.
What does 合化土 mean?
It is the theory that the fusion of 子丑 transforms into the element Earth. In practice the transformation happens rarely and needs special conditions in the charts, so it should not be taken as a guarantee.
Why is 2027 hard for the Ox and the Rat?
"Hard" is not quite the word. For the Ox, 丑未冲 is a year of change and shifting; for the Rat, 子未害 brings quiet misunderstandings. It is a background that can be passed calmly if the rules are agreed beforehand.
Should a wedding be moved because of 丑未冲?
The decision is made by the classical rules of date selection based on both charts, not by one sign. For that there is a separate Wedding Date Selection reading.
How do I check a Rat and Ox pair properly?
You need the date, time and place of birth of both people. Then the Day Masters, day branches, elemental balance, stars and Luck Pillars are calculated.
