Two Rabbits at one table: both try not to escalate, both speak more quietly than they think, and both wait for the other to be first to mention what hurt. The conversation lasts an hour and consists of "whatever you say" and "I don't mind". An outsider might decide this is perfect harmony. In fact it is a kind of dead end, and couples with identical signs meet it especially often.
It is too early to draw conclusions. The repetition of the same branch is called 伏吟 (fú yín) in BaZi, literally "a hidden moan", in meaning "repetition". By itself it is neither bad nor good. It is a situation in which the same branch appears twice, and it can show up as deep understanding, as stagnation or as boredom, depending on the other pillars.
We speak here only about the year sign, one branch out of eight. For two Rabbits that is an especially important qualification: an identical birth year almost never means an identical chart, and at the end of the article we show why.
1 Who the Rabbit 卯 is in BaZi
The branch 卯 (mǎo) is the middle of spring, the peak of the Wood element. Inside it is a single stem, 乙 (yǐ, Yin Wood), with no admixture. The branch is considered "pure": there is nothing to dilute its quality, and it appears directly. 乙 is not a mighty oak but grass, a vine, a flower: a plant that bends, goes around obstacles and finds a way where a straight trunk would hit a wall.
Hence the familiar traits: flexibility, diplomacy, a sense of tact, a tendency to avoid open confrontation, artistic taste. A Rabbit is easy to underestimate: behind the soft manner is the persistence a plant shows when it pushes up through asphalt. In the year pillar, 卯 speaks of an environment in which courtesy, the ability to negotiate and outward restraint were valued. The sign is covered in detail in the Year of the Rabbit in BaZi.
2 What 伏吟 means when a branch repeats
In classical texts 伏吟 is mentioned most often in connection with time: when a year or a Luck Pillar repeats a branch already standing in the chart. Such repetition is held to "amplify" the theme of that branch and sometimes to give a feeling of stagnation, repeating situations, a return to what has been passed.
For a pair of identical year signs it means this. The quality of 卯 in the couple is doubled. The good side: mutual understanding, shared taste, similar reactions, no need to explain the obvious. The difficult side: shared blind spots. If a Rabbit badly tolerates direct confrontation, two Rabbits together will avoid it twice as much, and accumulated dissatisfaction will sooner or later come out as an explosion or a quiet withdrawal.
For elements it is simple: Wood with Wood. In the five-element cycle this relationship is called "equal": no production, no control, no exhaustion. It holds both support and rivalry at once. Two people live in one rhythm and one elemental "climate", but each lays claim to the same territory.
| What we compare | Rabbit 卯 | Rabbit 卯 |
|---|---|---|
| Branch element | Yin Wood | Yin Wood |
| Hidden stem | 乙 | 乙 |
| Season | mid-spring | mid-spring |
| Strength | tact, taste, flexibility | tact, taste, flexibility |
| Shared weak spot | avoiding conflict | avoiding conflict |
3 Love and marriage
Two Rabbits usually come together gently. There is no bright assault and no dramatic scenes: first conversations, then evenings together, then it turns out you already live together. The feeling "as if we had always known each other" is common in such couples, and it is real: both have a similar tempo, similar preferences in surroundings, a similar attitude to silence.
The main feature of life together is that both tend to smooth things over. In daily life it is pleasant: few conflicts, an even tone, a cozy home. Deeper down it can lead to a situation where important things go undiscussed for years. Someone wants to move but does not say so, because they do not want to upset the other. Someone is unhappy with how chores are divided but stays silent to keep the peace. After a while such "peace" turns into accumulated fatigue.
What helps:
- an agreement about "uncomfortable conversations": for example once a month discuss what has not been discussed, and treat that as normal rather than a quarrel;
- the habit of saying "I" instead of "you": "I need", "I am tired", rather than "you again";
- personal space: Rabbits need time alone, and in a couple of two Rabbits this has to be planned for;
- outside energy: a shared outdoor hobby, trips, anything that brings movement, because at home two calm branches fall asleep easily.
4 Friendship
The friendship of two Rabbits is usually very comfortable. There is no game of leadership and no expectation that one will lead and the other follow. They sense each other's mood well and know when to stay silent. The downside: such a friendship can turn out too "homey". It is good when friends have a shared project or an outside interest, otherwise meetings become an endless discussion of the same subjects.
A separate case is the friendship of Rabbits of different generations. Between neighboring Rabbit years there are exactly twelve years; the branch is shared while the year stems differ, and this is visible in manner: an older and a younger Rabbit rarely behave in the same way. More on this in the section on three examples below.
5 Parent and child
A special case is when a parent and a child are both Rabbits, which happens fairly often when the age gap is a multiple of twelve. Then the house is quiet: both avoid shouting, both dislike pressure. A Rabbit child next to a Rabbit parent feels understood without words, and that is precious. The risk is that the unspoken stays unspoken for years. The teenager does not talk about problems because "the parent is upset already", and the parent does not ask because "I don't want to press".
The practical solution is simple and requires nothing esoteric: build family rituals of conversation. A weekly walk, cooking together, a car ride where talking is easy because both look ahead. For Rabbits side-by-side contact, when people are busy with a shared task and not sitting face to face, usually works better than "let's talk".
6 Work and a shared business
At work two Rabbits make a calm and tactful tandem. Consulting, creative professions, education, service and design tasks go well, wherever taste and the ability to deal with people matter. Conflicts between them are rare, and clients feel an atmosphere of goodwill.
There is one weak spot: making hard decisions. Firing an employee, refusing a client, talking about money: two Rabbits tend to postpone these. For a shared business it helps to divide zones in advance so that one partner takes the "unpleasant" side, and to put it in the agreement.
Another trap is shared blind zones. If both dislike numbers, nobody counts them. If both dislike advertising, nobody learns about them. A good move for such a tandem is to bring in a third party for the missing function.
Two identical signs are not two identical people
A Couple Compatibility Reading compares all eight characters of both partners and shows how your charts differ and where that works in your favor.

To see how little a sign alone means, take birth years. Recall that in BaZi the year changes at 立春 (lì chūn) around February 4, so those born in January and early February belong to the previous year.
- 1987 (丁卯) and 1999 (己卯). Both have the branch 卯, but the year stems are 丁 (Fire) and 己 (Earth). Fire produces Earth, so on the top layer there is even nourishment: the older "Fire" Rabbit warms the younger "Earth" one.
- 1975 (乙卯) and 1987 (丁卯). The stems are 乙 (Wood) and 丁 (Fire): Wood produces Fire. Here the older one's year stem matches the branch 卯 in element, so he has twice the Wood and "gives" it to the younger one.
- 1999 (己卯) and 2011 (辛卯). The stems 己 (Earth) and 辛 (Metal): Earth produces Metal, and Metal controls the Wood of 卯. One link is enough for "identical" Rabbits to behave differently.
This is not compatibility yet, only an illustration. Year stems, like everything in the year pillar, describe a backdrop, not a person. But they show that the words "we are both Rabbits" guarantee nothing. A shared sign gives one shared trait, and the rest is determined by the birth day, the hour and all the pillars together.
8 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them
Quiet accumulation
This is the main problem. Conflicts do not come out until there are too many. A working rule: any irritation lasting more than a day should be spoken. The wording is simple: "this particular thing stung me, let's discuss it".
"You decide"
Both avoid responsibility for a decision because they fear it will turn out badly. Then an ordinary "where shall we have dinner?" becomes a two-hour run through options. Alternation helps: today one decides, tomorrow the other, and nobody grades the choice.
Shared stagnation
Two equally cautious people can postpone change for years. An external deadline helps here: agree that by a certain date a decision on moving, a child or a job change will be made. A date removes the endless "later".
9 Two Rabbits in 2027
2027 is 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, beginning with 立春 around February 4. The year is interesting for a Rabbit: the branches 卯 and 未 belong to the Wood Three Harmony 三合 亥卯未. The Pig 亥 is missing, so the triangle is incomplete (半三合). The classics read such a combination as support and strengthening of Wood, extra connections and a sense that affairs "move together". Both partners have this reserve in the year, and it is a shared plus for the pair.
If one of your charts has a Pig 亥 (in the year, month, day, hour or a Luck Pillar), the triangle closes. In the monthly calendar the Pig month 辛亥 falls from November 7 to December 6, 2027 (boundaries within a day), and for a Rabbit couple it is a month when shared plans are discussed more easily. The Rabbit's own month 癸卯 runs from March 6 to April 4: the month branch matches yours, and the fu yin situation shows up as heightened attention to the theme of "who are we to each other". In those weeks it is useful to say aloud what usually stays unsaid.
There are also months in 2027 that touch both Rabbits equally, simply because they share one branch. The most noticeable is 己酉 (September 8 to October 7): 卯酉冲, a direct clash with the Rabbit's branch. When both are "shaken" at once, it is hard for either to stay the support, so major shared decisions are better not scheduled for those weeks. Also sensitive are 甲辰 (April 5 to May 5, the harm 卯辰害), 丙午 (June 6 to July 6, the destruction 卯午破) and 壬子 (December 7 to January 5, the punishment 子卯刑, which the classics call 無禮之刑, wúlǐ zhī xíng, the "rude punishment"). Calmest are the month 丁未 (July 7 to August 7), where the year branch repeats and the Wood half-combination 卯未 sounds louder, and the month 庚戌 (October 8 to November 6) with the combination 卯戌合: after September's tension it helps to come to terms.
The year stem is 丁 (Yin Fire). Wood produces Fire, so in 2027 both Rabbit charts "give out" energy. Practically this means the year can be full and costly: many tasks, contacts, movement. Couples with this chart do well to protect time for rest.
All of this is a general backdrop. How exactly the year lands on you is determined by the whole chart, not by the year sign.
10 Why the year sign is only the top layer
Two Rabbits by year are two shared branches and nothing more. The other six characters differ, and they decide whether the pair is "mirrored" or complementary. These are the five checks made on full charts.
- The Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ). In two Rabbits it can be any of the ten stems. If one has 甲 and the other 辛, the pair is nothing like one where both have 乙.
- The day branches, the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮. They show far more about life together than the birth year does.
- Elemental balance. Two people with one year branch can need completely different elements. One needs Water, the other Fire, and then each brings the other what was missing.
- Links between all pillars: combinations, clashes, punishments, harms. For example 卯 is friendly with 戌 (卯戌合) but clashes with 酉 (卯酉冲).
- Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn): whether your rises and falls coincide.
A single compatibility percentage does not exist in BaZi. There is a map: what the pair shares, what differs, and where it stands on two legs and where on one.
An honest caveat. A pair of identical year signs is not necessarily "mirrored". That is only an assumption, checked against the charts. Decisions about marriage, moving or a shared business should be made from full charts, not from two Rabbits. For a first look at two dates there is the compatibility tool, and the method is set out in the five layers of BaZi compatibility.

11 Frequently asked questions
Are two Rabbits compatible?
Identical branches create a situation called fu yin 伏吟 (repetition). The elements coincide, so the pair usually understands each other well but shares blind spots, above all the avoidance of conflict. The final picture depends on the Day Masters and the other pillars.
What is fu yin (伏吟)?
It is the repetition of the same branch, for example when one sign appears both in a chart and in time. It strengthens the theme of that branch. In a pair of identical signs it means a doubling of quality: of strengths and of shared blind spots alike.
What awaits two Rabbits in 2027?
For each of them the branches 卯 (mǎo) and 未 (wèi) form a half of the Wood Three Harmony 亥卯未. The Pig 亥 is missing. It is a generally favorable backdrop that closes fully if 亥 is in a chart or arrives in time. It is not a prediction of events.
Can two Rabbits have completely different characters?
Yes. The birth year gives only one branch out of eight. The Day Master, the elemental balance and the other pillars can differ sharply. Two Rabbits born in 1987 and 1999 do not even share the year stem: 丁卯 and 己卯.
How can a Rabbit couple avoid getting stuck?
Agree on regular "uncomfortable conversations", take turns deciding, and set external deadlines for important decisions. That breaks the habit of postponing and storing up dissatisfaction.
