If you are a Horse and your person is a Rooster (or the other way round), classical BaZi hands you no ready-made verdict. Among the six harmonies, six clashes, six harms and six destructions, the pair 午 (wǔ, the Horse) and 酉 (yǒu, the Rooster) does not appear. It is a neutral neighbourhood: two branches with no scenario written in advance. For some readers that is dull news, for others a relief. Nobody promises you a "perfect match" or a "cursed pair".
Neutral does not mean empty, though. There is a link at the level of the elements: the Fire of the Horse controls the Metal of the Rooster. There is a difference of rhythm: 午 is noon, the double-hour from 11:00 to 13:00, the sun at its peak, while 酉 is the early evening double-hour from 17:00 to 19:00, sunset and the tallying of the day. And there is a curious detail about the Peach Blossom star, which comes up below. Together they make a fairly lively picture.
One caveat before going further, because nothing after it makes sense without it. The year sign is the branch of the year pillar, one eighth of a chart. It describes an inherited background and a general style, not how you actually live as a couple. Everything below is a tendency of two signs, not a diagnosis of your particular pair. The last section covers what to check in the full charts; if you do not have yours yet, you can build a free chart here.
1 Two branches and what is inside them
Start with the construction. The Horse 午 is Fire at its highest point. Two hidden stems sit inside it: 丁 (dīng, yin Fire, a candle or a lamp) as the main one and 己 (jǐ, soft yin Earth) as the secondary one. The Rooster 酉 is pure yin Metal, the "jewel" type, and holds a single hidden stem, 辛 (xīn, yin Metal as jewellery, a needle, a goldsmith's tool). No admixtures.
| Feature | Horse 午 | Rooster 酉 |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Fire | Metal |
| Hidden stems | 丁 (main), 己 | 辛 (the only one) |
| Time of day | 11:00-13:00, noon | 17:00-19:00, sunset |
| Season | midsummer (the 午 month runs roughly 6 June to 6 July) | mid-autumn (the 酉 month runs roughly 8 September to 7 October) |
| Style | openness, drive, brightness | precision, form, self-regard |
Look at the hidden stems. The main stem of the Horse is 丁, and 丁 set against 辛 is "heat that melts a jewel". In the Ten Gods cycle, for a Day Master of 辛, the stem 丁 appears as 七殺 (qī shā, Seven Killings), meaning pressure and control from outside. If your Day Master is 辛 and your partner's chart shows a strong 丁, you will tend to feel that person as a permanent inspector. That holds for particular charts, though, not for the signs in general.
2 Fire and Metal: what actually happens between the elements
In the controlling cycle of the five elements, Fire overcomes Metal: it melts, shapes and softens it. The textbook line reads "the Horse presses on the Rooster". Practitioners look deeper. Metal without fire stays ore or an ingot, with no sword and no ring. Fire without metal is just a flame with nothing to work on. The classical image of fire tempering metal fits here better than fire burning metal.
The difference lies in the dose. The gentle fire of 丁 (a lamp, a forge) works for metal. The unshaded heat of noon 午 is close to making the metal run. In a couple this looks as follows: the Horse offers an idea and the Rooster brings it to a finish. As long as the Horse does not hurry and demand "come on, why are you dragging this out", and the Rooster does not answer with cold criticism, the contact is productive. The moment the Horse pushes the pace, the Rooster goes defensive, starts picking at details, finding flaws and haggling over wording.
3 Love and marriage: the role of the Peach Blossom
The most interesting detail of this pair lies in the stars. In the 桃花 (táo huā, Peach Blossom) system, the star of charm and romantic occasions, the branch 午 is the Peach Blossom for people of the 巳酉丑 group (Snake, Rooster, Ox). Put simply, for a chart with a Rooster in the year or day position, the Horse is the "peach" branch. That does not make the Horse your destiny, but it explains why Roosters so often notice Horses before Horses notice them: the energy strikes them as bright, attractive and memorable.
In marriage the picture runs like this. The Horse brings warmth, a readiness to travel and act, the habit of calling first and gathering people in. The Rooster brings order: the schedule, the finances, a home that looks the way it should. At the start this is a complement, one lights the fire and the other organizes. After a few years the typical tension shows up. The Horse feels that the Rooster "grounds" every decision she makes, and the Rooster feels that the Horse scatters herself and does not value the work of organizing a shared life.
A simple agreement about territories helps. The Horse is responsible for events (trips, guests, celebrations), the Rooster for the routine (budget, house, timetable). Both understand that this is not a hierarchy but a division of poles. It also matters that the Rooster does not turn care for order into constant correction of the partner, and that the Horse does not take every remark as a personal verdict.
The hidden reef is the self-assurance of both signs. The Horse is one of the branches that meet 自刑 (zì xíng, self-punishment) when doubled in a chart: 午午. The Rooster is on the same list: 酉酉. If both of you have these branches twice (say, in the year and in the day), people tend to stage crises for themselves, and in a couple this works as an amplifier: each waits for the other to "stop winding themselves up".

Couple Compatibility Reading — $14.904 Friendship: the easiest form of this pairing
As friends, the Horse and the Rooster often do better than they do as spouses. The reason is clear: in friendship each keeps a private space, and the differences work as interest. The Horse pulls the Rooster into trips, events and circles of new acquaintances. The Rooster is, for the Horse, the person who will tell the truth about her plan without fearing to spoil the mood.
A good sign in such a friendship is quarrels about substance, without offence about form. The Horse waits out the Rooster's cold criticism because there is more use than venom in it. The Rooster puts up with the Horse's emotional flare-ups, knowing they pass quickly: fire burns brightly and goes out without smoke. If one of you tends to store up grievances (the Rooster sometimes remembers an old remark with remarkable accuracy), the friendship cracks. The remedy is regular short conversations: "that bothered me", said without the pile-up.
5 Work and business: who launches, who answers for the result
In a shared venture the pair arranges itself quite naturally. The Horse is the generator: sales, negotiation, public presence, quick decisions. The Rooster is the operator: quality control, reporting, contracts, the final look after which the product is not embarrassing to show. Fire moves things, metal forms them.
The risks are predictable too. The Horse promises clients faster than the Rooster is ready to deliver, and the Rooster delays a release over details the buyer will never notice. The working solution is a written protocol: agree in advance on deadlines, on the criteria for "good enough", and on each person's right to say "stop" in their own zone. Split the money into two circuits: the Horse is in charge of growth, the Rooster of reserves and expenses. One person who both expands and controls will burn out.
If more than the two of you take part in the business, remember that the Horse likes to be seen and the Rooster likes to be right. Two "public" positions in one team collide. Decide beforehand who is the face of the project and who answers for the content, and put it in writing where you can.
6 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them
Four storylines are characteristic of this pair. Each has a simple working remedy.
- "You criticize everything." This is the Horse's complaint about the Rooster. Remedy: attach specifics to the criticism ("I don't like that the weekend is booked without us; I suggest...") instead of judging the person. The Horse takes in an idea but resists a character reference.
- "You are always in a hurry." The Rooster's complaint. Remedy: the Horse names deadlines early and leaves time for checking, rather than demanding a result "by tonight". The Rooster, for her part, names a real date instead of going silent.
- Public against private. The Horse needs guests, the Rooster needs a home without random people. Agree on open-door days and on days when it is only the two of you.
- Money. The Horse spends emotionally, the Rooster counts. Split the shared budget from personal money that needs no accounting, and the arguments about purchases disappear; only the arguments about large investments remain.
In a chart, conflicts grow worse when one partner has an excess of Fire and the other has too little Water to cool things down. Then you both "burn" and there is nobody to chill the conversation. A plain household insurance: agree beforehand on a twenty-minute pause in any argument, after which the discussion resumes.
7 The pair in 2027
2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat. It starts at 立春 (lì chūn, the Beginning of Spring) around 4 February 2027, not on 1 January. That matters for people born in January or early February: their year may turn out to be the previous one.
For the Horse, the year branch 未 brings two contacts. The first is 六合 (liù hé, Six Harmony) 午未: Fire and Earth are drawn together into a pair, a warm and supportive combination. The second is 三會 (sān huì, Directional Combination) 巳午未, the seasonal gathering of summer: with the Snake 巳 and the Horse 午, the Goat 未 closes the summer set. For the Horse the year usually feels dense, warm and full of people and obligations. The only thing to watch is that it does not become too hot: the directional combination strengthens Fire, and impulsive decisions cost more than usual.
For the Rooster there is no direct link with the year branch 未. That is a neutral background, neither support from the branches nor a clash. But the year carries the stem 丁, yin Fire, and by the Ten Gods rules, for a Day Master of 辛 it becomes 七殺 (Seven Killings). If your Rooster partner has exactly 辛 as the Day Master, outside pressure may be harder to take in 2027: inspections, expectations, demands. For other Day Masters, the stem 丁 reads by its own rules.
For the couple this means an asymmetry. The Horse lives in a warm, "rising" year, the Rooster in an even or slightly more demanding one. A practical consequence: in 2027 the Horse should ask more often about her partner's rhythm and not demand the same tempo. Three months deserve separate attention. The month 丙午 (roughly 6 June to 6 July 2027) is the Horse's own month, with Fire at its peak. The month 己酉 (roughly 8 September to 7 October) is the Rooster's month, bringing more clarity and voice. The month 丁未 (7 July to 7 August) is the Goat's, when both feel a dense, hot summer.
If you want the general yearly context for your own chart rather than for the sign, see the 2027 article for the Horse and the one for the Rooster.
8 Why the year sign is only the top layer
A Horse and a Rooster by birth year can turn out completely different in a couple. Suppose you are a Horse by year, but the day pillar carries a Dragon 辰 and the Day Master is soft Water 癸. Then you live differently from the "typical Horse": less drive, more sensitivity. Your Rooster may have 午 in the day pillar and show a thoroughly fiery temperament. That is why real compatibility is built on other layers.
- Day Masters 日主 (rì zhǔ). How the elements of the two "selves" relate: feeding, control, stem combination.
- Day branches. The Spouse Palace 夫妻宮: harmony, clash, punishment or harm between them.
- Elemental balance. What each of you supplies to the other's shortage.
- Relationship stars. The Peach Blossom and others shape temperament and the occasions for tension.
- Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). Whether the highs and lows line up over the next decade.
This kind of analysis yields no compatibility percentage, which is more honest. The result is a map of the union: where you have support, where the work zones are, and what can be done in advance. The method is described in detail in BaZi Compatibility: 5 Layers of the Real Method. To see what the yearly layer does for each sign on its own, read the portraits of the Horse and the Rooster.

Are the Horse and the Rooster compatible in Chinese astrology?
There is no direct classical link between 午 and 酉: it is a neutral pair, with no harmony 合 and no clash 沖. The outcome is decided by the elements (Fire controls Metal), by character, and by the full charts of both partners.
Why do people say the Horse "melts" the Rooster?
In the controlling cycle of the five elements, Fire controls Metal. That describes pressure between elements, not a sentence: Fire makes metal fit for work as long as the heat is measured.
Can a Horse and a Rooster build a strong marriage?
They can, if the Day Masters and the Spouse Palaces in the charts fit together. The year signs only tell you about the background, so a serious conclusion needs the date, time and place of birth of both people.
How should a Horse and a Rooster run a business together?
Separate the roles: the Horse handles launch, sales and people; the Rooster handles precision, bookkeeping and quality. Agree in advance who makes the final decision on money.
What does 2027 change for a Horse and Rooster couple?
For the Horse the year brings the harmony 午未 and the seasonal set 巳午未, so life becomes denser and warmer. For the Rooster there is no direct link with the year branch 未. The asymmetry of background shows in the mood of the couple but does not determine its fate.
Are year signs enough to judge compatibility?
No. The year sign describes one pillar out of four. It is sturdier to compare the Day Masters, the day branches, the elemental balance, the relationship stars and the Luck Pillars of both partners.
