I will open with the unpleasant part. In any reference on the elements you will find the formula: Water controls Fire. The Horse 午 (wǔ) is Fire at its highest point, the Pig 亥 (hài) is Water at its deepest. Look only at that and the pair is doomed: one puts the other out. It would be so, if astrology boiled down to two words.
Then it gets interesting. Between 午 and 亥 there is no clash 沖 (the Horse clashes with the Rat 子, the Pig with the Snake 巳). There is no harm, no punishment, no destruction. Yet inside each branch there are hidden stems, and those stems are arranged so that they combine with one another. The classics call such a link 暗合 (àn hé, hidden combination). It is invisible on the surface but felt in the very fabric of the relationship.
So the story of the Horse and the Pig is not about "ice and flame". It is about two people who at first look like opposites and then turn out to have more in common than it seemed. The usual caveat still applies: everything said here concerns the year signs, one pillar out of four. A real pair is determined by the full charts, and you can start with your own free chart.
1 What is hidden in the branches: secret combinations
Hidden stems 藏干 (cáng gān, "concealed heavenly stems") are the characters held inside each earthly branch. Here is what our pair holds.
| Branch | Main stem | Others | Combination with the partner |
|---|---|---|---|
| 午 Horse | 丁 (yin Fire) | 己 (yin Earth) | 丁 with 壬, 己 with 甲 |
| 亥 Pig | 壬 (yang Water) | 甲 (yang Wood) | 壬 with 丁, 甲 with 己 |
The combination 丁壬 (dīng-rén) is one of the five classical stem combinations. In theory it transforms into Wood, but in practice what usually counts is not the transformation but the attraction itself, the "bondedness" of two stems. The combination 甲己 (jiǎ-jǐ) is another of the five, leading by the classics toward Earth. Both combinations are present at once: the main stems and the secondary ones. For two branches so different in element, this is a rare, almost excessive link.
What does it give a couple? In the classical treatises such a combination is described as a "secret sympathy". People with this link often feel calmer beside the partner than common sense would suggest. They may find little in common in their interests yet discover a closeness in moments. These are subtle effects, though, which can only be checked on specific charts: a stem combination also needs to be "put into motion", so that the stems actually show.
An honest qualification. In the list of the six harmonies and the standard branch links the pair 午 and 亥 does not appear. The hidden combination counts as a secondary link, and schools differ in how much weight to give it. For our purposes it is enough to say: there is no direct conflict, and there is a subtle extra factor that softens the control of Water over Fire.
2 Water and Fire: how the pressure works
Back to the elements. The Pig is Water 壬 with a touch of Wood 甲. The Horse is Fire 丁 with a touch of Earth 己. Water puts out fire, but that is not always bad. A weak flame is quenched by water, a strong one is softened and cooled, kept from overheating. Everything depends on how much fire and how much water there is in the charts.
There is also a third element that is often forgotten: Wood. In the generating cycle Water feeds Wood and Wood feeds Fire. Inside the Pig there is exactly a 甲, and that is a bridge between the partners. The Pig "feeds" the Wood from which the Horse draws fuel. In good cases the pair in which the Horse feels the Pig's support without a sense of pressure is built precisely along this path. In bad cases the Pig "floods" the Horse with care, and the Horse takes it as control.
3 Love and marriage: who is responsible for what
In a relationship the Horse brings the spark, courage and readiness to begin. The Pig brings warmth, generosity and the ability to accept a person whole. The Horse is often drawn in the Pig precisely to this deep, calm kindness. The Pig values in the Horse her liveliness and directness: beside her life does not stand still.
At the start the pair can look ideal: the Pig listens patiently, the Horse inspires. Problems begin when routine settles over the relationship. The Horse wants movement, events, new people. The Pig wants home, dinner, predictability. Each takes the other's need as a rejection of themselves: "you don't value me if you are bored at home" and "you are smothering me if you want me always beside you".
A simple device helps, the allocation of "orbits". The Horse has the right to evenings away from home, the Pig has the right to days at home without guests. At the same time at least once a week you are alone together, equally engaged, with no phones. The conflict between inner and outer life disappears when each is sure of getting what they need.
One more subject is sensitivity. The Pig is more easily hurt than she shows and remembers grievances for a long time. The Horse cools quickly and sincerely does not understand why yesterday's quarrel still "hangs" in the air. It matters for the Horse to remember: after a dispute, go back to it and say aloud that you have settled things. The Pig should not stay silent but voice the hurt while it is still small.

Couple Compatibility Reading — $14.904 How they talk: two languages of one family
Picture a typical evening. The Horse comes home wound up, with a story that must be told at once. She talks fast, gestures, jumps from topic to topic, and by the middle of the story has forgotten how the problem began. The Pig listens, nods, pours tea. The next day she returns to the story and asks a question the Horse does not remember at all: "And how did you finally settle it with that person?"
For the Horse this is unexpectedly sweet, for the Pig it is natural: she digests impressions slowly and with a delay. If both know about this difference, it becomes a warm habit. If not, the Horse decides she is not being heard ("I told you yesterday!") and the Pig decides she is being rushed. The practical advice is plain: the Horse tells, the Pig answers the next day, and nobody counts that as being late.
A second example: a trip. The Horse wants to leave tomorrow, the Pig wants to choose the hotel, buy tickets and prepare the luggage. If the Horse picks the destination and the date and the Pig takes the comfort and the details, the trip is perfect. If the Horse plans everything, the Pig feels like a passenger; if the Pig plans everything, the Horse loses her excitement. Division of labour wins.
5 Friendship: unexpectedly strong
Friendship between these signs rarely starts with instant chemistry. It is rather a gradual acquaintance, after which it turns out there is no other conversation partner like this. The Pig values in the Horse honesty and energy; the Horse values in the Pig the absence of malice and the ability to listen without judgment.
It works well when you have a shared activity with a clear rhythm: trips, cooking, celebrations, helping friends. It works worse when the friendship rests on talks for two and "confessions of the soul", which the Horse quickly breathes out and the Pig is still living through.
6 Work and business: sharing the risk
In a joint venture the Horse and the Pig complement each other. The Horse is the initiator, the leader of negotiations, the person who is not afraid to declare herself loudly. The Pig is the keeper of resources: she creates a pleasant atmosphere, holds the team together and can bring the interests of different people into line.
Disagreements arise around speed and risk. The Horse tends to launch fast and test on the move; the Pig prefers first to gather resources and make sure there is a foothold. The solution is stages: a small pilot instead of a big launch. The Horse gets movement, the Pig gets insurance.
Money deserves its own note. Both signs know how to spend with pleasure, and a shared budget easily becomes "opaque". It is better to agree on bookkeeping at once: a single spreadsheet, regular calls about finances, a separation of personal expenses from joint investments.
7 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them
- Different tempo. The Horse decides instantly, the Pig "digests". The rule: significant decisions take a day. The Horse does not push, the Pig does not drag beyond the agreed time.
- Directness against delicacy. The Horse speaks plainly, the Pig hears it as an accusation. The formula "observation, feeling, request" helps in place of judgment.
- Jealousy and control. The bright Horse attracts attention, the Pig may suffer in silence. Better to state boundaries in advance than to sort it out afterwards.
- Overheating. Too much Fire and dryness in a chart brings endless arguments and irritation. Water is needed: swimming, trips to the sea, calm rituals.
- Too much Water. Too much Water in a chart brings low mood and passivity. Fire and Wood are needed: movement, creativity, walks in the light.
8 The pair in 2027
2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, and it begins at 立春 (lì chūn, the Beginning of Spring) around 4 February. For this pair the year is interesting because it connects both signs, each in its own way.
The Horse receives 六合 (Six Harmony) 午未 and 三會 (Directional Combination) 巳午未, the summer seasonal gathering. The Pig 亥 forms with the year branch 未 a part of the Three Harmony 亥卯未 of the element Wood: the full triangle is not there (the Rabbit 卯 is missing), so it is an incomplete alliance. The Horse gets warmth and density, the Pig gets growth and gentle support.
The Wood of 亥卯未 is precisely that "bridge" between the Water of the Pig and the Fire of the Horse. In 2027 the calendar strengthens it. That means you have a decent opportunity to make peace, if something did not fit before, to build a joint plan and to agree on the "orbits". It is not a promise, but a favourable background.
The calendar of months in 2027: 丙午 (roughly 6 June to 6 July) is the Horse's month, the peak of Fire and of emotional outbursts. 辛亥 (roughly 7 November to 6 December) is the Pig's month, when the themes of home, resources and quiet are stronger. Between them lies 丁未 (7 July to 7 August), the "double Goat", when the background of the year and of the month coincide.
A warning for both sides: a warm year is no reason to take large decisions without thought. The Fire of the Horse is rising anyway, and two Fires (the year stem 丁 and the hidden 丁 in the chart) can overheat. For the Pig a warm year adds Wood but does not guarantee ease. Read the 2027 article for the Horse and the one for the Pig to see how the year looks for each of you separately.
9 Why the year sign is only the top layer
The superficial reading "Water puts out Fire" breaks against any real chart. A Horse by year may have a Water Day Master, and then she is herself a "Pig" by character. A Pig by year may be born in June amid Fire and be the most fiery person you know. The year sign is the family, ancestral layer.
For a genuine assessment of a pair the following are compared:
- Day Masters 日主 (rì zhǔ). The element of each "self" and how they interact.
- Day branches. The Spouse Palace: 合, 沖, 刑, 害, 破.
- Elemental balance. What each brings the other of what is lacking.
- Relationship stars. Attraction, boundaries, solitude.
- Luck Pillars 大運. Whether the highs and lows line up.
If both charts hold Wood, the pair gets a bridge, and Water and Fire do not get in each other's way. If there is no Wood and control runs along several lines at once, the pair will need more conscious effort. All of this is settled by data, not by proverbs. The general method is in BaZi Compatibility: 5 Layers of the Real Method, and the portraits of the signs are Horse and Pig. If your own theme is choosing "the wrong" people, look at the article on why you keep attracting the wrong partners.

Are the Horse and the Pig incompatible because of Water and Fire?
Water does control Fire, and that gives a noticeable pressure. But there is no direct clash 沖 between 午 and 亥, and in the hidden stems there are the combinations 丁壬 and 甲己. The signs of this pair are not condemned.
What is the hidden combination 午亥?
The classics call it 暗合 (àn hé). Inside 午 lie 丁 and 己, inside 亥 lie 壬 and 甲. The stems 丁壬 and 甲己 combine in pairs. The link is quiet and not visible on the surface, but it is felt as an unexpected closeness.
How do the Pig and the Horse get along at home?
The Pig brings comfort, generosity and patience, the Horse brings movement and initiative. Conflicts grow from a different speed and a different sensitivity: the Horse is quick and blunt, the Pig takes longer to live through things.
What does 2027 give this pair?
The Horse has 午未 and 巳午未, the Pig has the half-alliance 亥未 of the element Wood (an incomplete 亥卯未). Both signs are tied to the year, which creates a shared warm background. Wood also acts as a bridge between Water and Fire.
Can a Horse and a Pig run a business together?
They can, if the spheres are divided. The Horse handles sales and public presence, the Pig handles people, conditions and service. Conflict is possible around risk: the Pig is more cautious, the Horse more daring.
Can a pair be assessed by birth year alone?
No. For reliability you need two full charts: the Day Masters, the day branches, the elemental balance, the relationship stars and the Luck Pillars.
