In Asia, no serious entrepreneur opens a shop, signs a major contract, or launches a company on a random day. Before starting, they consult a master about 開業 (kāi yè — "opening a venture") — choosing a favorable launch day. It's part of the broader tradition of 擇日 (zé rì — "selecting a day"), the art of choosing the right moment for an important event.

Kai Ye · Opening a Venture
kāi yè · "to open a business, start a company"

The idea is simple and profound at once: the moment a venture is "born" sets its energetic pattern — the way a person's birth date sets their BaZi chart. That's why choosing a launch day is treated with the same seriousness as choosing a child's name. In this article, we'll break down why the start date affects a business's fate, how to read the "company's birth chart," how to match a day to the founder through 用神, which elements suit a given industry, how to activate a wealth day 財, what to avoid, and how to choose the hour for the first deal.

1 Why the start date shapes a business's fate

In BaZi, every beginning is a "conception." The moment an event officially begins fixes the combination of Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch for the year, month, day, and hour. That combination is the event's "chart." A wedding, a move, a factory opening, a café launch — everything has its own birth chart.

For a business, the "point of birth" is usually taken to be the day operations officially begin: the first working day, the grand opening, the day of the first sale, or the date the founding agreement is signed. It's around this date that the venture's "energetic character" is built — whether it will grow easily or against resistance, whether it will attract money, whether it will hold onto its team.

真The "good seed" principle. A good start date doesn't guarantee success — it still needs to be "watered" with effort, strategy, and capital. But a bad date is a seed planted in rocky soil: even a strong entrepreneur will spend extra energy fighting the environment's resistance. Choosing the date removes that unnecessary friction.

2 The launch-day chart = the company's "birth chart"

When we choose an 開業 day, we're effectively constructing the company's future BaZi chart. It has its own Day Master — 日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day," the Heavenly Stem of the chosen day), its own element, its own strengths and weak zones. A good master "assembles" this chart so that it's balanced, has an active wealth star, and supports the owner.

Month

Wu / Zi

庚

Geng (DM) / Shen

In the example above, the "company's" Day Master is 庚 (Geng, Yang Metal), strong (rooted in Shen). Wealth for Metal is Wood (乙 in the year), and it's present. Authority (structure, governability) is Fire (巳 and 午). The day's chart is balanced: there's money, there's governability, and there's the strength to hold onto it. That's the goal — not "magic," but constructing a sensible chart for the event.

The launch day becomes the company's birthday. We choose it as deliberately as parents would want to choose a child's birth date.

3 Matching the founder's chart through 用神

A company's chart doesn't exist in a vacuum — it has to "get along" with its owner's chart. The main bridge is the founder's Useful God, 用神 (yòng shén — "Useful God," the key balancing element of a chart). It's the element that heals and strengthens a specific person's chart.

The rule: the launch day should carry the owner's 用神 element, or at least feed it. If the founder's Useful God is Water, we'll prefer a day that gently adds Water, rather than one flooded with Fire (which depletes Water). Then the business becomes an "extension of the owner's strength," rather than working against them.

The order of selection. First, we look at the owner's chart and determine their 用神. Then we look for days carrying that element. From those, we filter out days that clash with the owner's chart (section 6). From what's left, we choose days that activate wealth, 財 (section 5), and fall into the "opening" category, 開日 (section 7). That narrows the list to 2-3 ideal dates.

If the business has several partners, the chart of the lead partner — the "engine" and majority holder — is used. Ideally, the day supports the 用神 of all key partners at once, but in practice, priority goes to the primary one.

4 Favorable elements by business type

Every industry "belongs" to one of the five Wu Xing elements (五行, wǔ xíng — "five elements"). It's good when the launch day strengthens the business's "home" element — like a tailwind for the sail of exactly your type of venture.

Industry elementBusiness typesSupporting day element
木 Woodeducation, fashion, medicine, furniture, publishing, ecologyWater 水 (feeds Wood)
火 FireIT, advertising, media, restaurants, energy, marketingWood 木 (fuel for Fire)
土 Earthreal estate, construction, agriculture, government services, consultingFire 火 (warms and births Earth)
金 Metalfinance, jewelry, law, machine-building, automotiveEarth 土 (births Metal)
水 Waterlogistics, tourism, trade, shipping, translation, beveragesMetal 金 (the source of Water)

For example, an IT startup is Fire, 火. A good start day adds Wood, 木 (fuel), so the business's "fire" burns bright. A day that floods everything with Water, 水, is undesirable for IT — Water douses Fire. This is the second filter, after the owner's 用神.

5 An active wealth day, 財

Business is about money, so the heart of choosing an 開業 date is the wealth star, 財 (cái — "wealth, money"). In the Ten Gods system, 財 is the element the Day Master controls — what it "owns." For an entrepreneur, an active, healthy 財 star on the start day symbolizes an inflow of money.

What does an "active 財" mean? The wealth element should:

The balance of strength and money. The classic formula: 身強財旺 (shēn qiáng cái wàng — "the body is strong, wealth flourishes"). A strong Day Master plus an active 財 is a chart that both attracts money and holds onto it. An imbalance (lots of wealth, but a weak stem) produces "money slipping through your fingers." So we choose a day where both strength and wealth are in harmony.
💰
正財 Direct Wealth
Zheng cai (zhèng cái — "Direct Wealth"). Steady, regular income: salaries, rent, repeat customers. Good for a stable business.
🎲
偏財 Indirect Wealth
Pian cai (piān cái — "side wealth"). Large, irregular sums: deals, investments, trading. Good for entrepreneurship and speculative models.

6 Avoiding clashes with the owner's chart

As with choosing any date, the main "red flag" is a 沖 (chōng — "branch clash"). The launch day shouldn't clash with the key branches of the founder's chart — especially the Day branch (the person's own palace) and the Year branch.

BranchClashes with
子 Zi ↔ 午 WuRat ↔ Horse
丑 Chou ↔ 未 WeiOx ↔ Goat
寅 Yin ↔ 申 ShenTiger ↔ Monkey
卯 Mao ↔ 酉 YouRabbit ↔ Rooster
辰 Chen ↔ 戌 XuDragon ↔ Dog
巳 Si ↔ 亥 HaiSnake ↔ Pig

For example, if the owner was born on a day with the 寅 (Tiger) branch, we don't launch the business on a 申 (Monkey) day, because 寅 沖 申. Launching then is read as "the business against the owner": conflict, instability, a sense that the venture drains strength rather than giving it. We also avoid a day that conflicts with the owner's 用神, and many schools also avoid launching in their 本命年 (běn mìng nián — "the year of one's own sign").

The team matters too. If the business's "face" (the director, the lead salesperson) will be present on the start day, we try to make sure the date doesn't clash with their chart either. A business is made of people, and a day that conflicts with key figures creates hidden friction within the team.

7 "Opening" days in tradition — 開日

The traditional Chinese calendar has a system of twelve day-officers (建除十二神, jiàn chú shí èr shén — "the twelve spirits of establishing and removing"). Each day carries one of twelve "duties" that set the character of actions taken on it. For launching a business, the ideal day is 開 (kāi — "to open")日 — the "Day of Opening."

DayMeaningGood for
開日 KaiOpening, beginninglaunching a business, openings, new projects ✅
成日 ChengCompletion, achievementsigning, closing deals ✅
滿日 ManFullness, abundancewarehouses, accumulation, trade ✅
破日 PoDestruction, breakingdemolishing the old, closing — NOT opening ❌
閉日 BiClosing, sealingstorage — NOT for a start ❌

The days 開 (Opening), 成 (Completion), and 滿 (Fullness) are traditionally favorable for 開業. The days 破 (Destruction) and 閉 (Closing) are categorically not: opening a business on a "closing day" symbolically contradicts itself. This is the third filter, layered on top of 用神 and clash-checking.

8 The hour of launch and the first deal

Once the day is chosen, we also choose the hour — the Chinese day is divided into 12 double-hours (時辰, shí chén — "great hour"), each with its own Earthly Branch. The opening hour (ribbon-cutting, first transaction, sending the first invoice) shouldn't clash, 沖, with the chosen day's branch or the owner's chart, and ideally gently strengthens wealth, 財, or the 用神.

Double-hourTimeSymbolism
寅 Yin03:00–05:00dawn, a new beginning
辰 Chen07:00–09:00the "hour of the dragon," rising, growth
巳 Si09:00–11:00activity, the height of business hours
午 Wu11:00–13:00the peak, maximum Yang energy

In practice, shop openings often pick the "rising" morning hours (辰 or 巳), symbolizing an upward climb. For a first major deal, an hour carrying 財 that doesn't conflict with the owner is chosen. The hour is a powerful, but supplementary, layer: it strengthens an already good day, but won't rescue a bad one.

9 Linking it to the choice of name and direction

Choosing a date isn't a standalone technique — it's part of a larger system. Experienced entrepreneurs in Asia synchronize several layers at once:

The synergy effect. When the name, the direction, and the date all "resonate" in the same element supporting the owner, the business feels like a natural extension of their strength. That's the goal of applied BaZi for an entrepreneur — not "luck magic," but aligning every decision with the person's chart.

10 How a classical launch-date selection works

To choose an 開業 date properly, two things are needed: the founder's chart and an acceptable window for the start. From there, the same filtering funnel we described applies. (This is the method itself; a personal launch-date selection is not on sale on this site yet.)

  1. Calculate the owner's chart, determine the Day Master's strength and the Useful God, 用神.
  2. Determine the industry's element and the support it needs.
  3. From the window, select days carrying 用神 and supporting the industry.
  4. Among those, keep the days with an active wealth star, 財, and an "opening day," 開日 / 成日 / 滿日.
  5. Cross out days that clash, 沖, with the owner's or team's charts, and any 破日 / 閉日 days.
  6. From the finalists, pick 2-3 dates and choose a launch hour.

This is the classic date-selection method used across Asia for everything, from opening a corner shop to launching a corporation. First, the person's chart; then, the venture's chart; then, the moment that unites them best.

The main thing to remember. A good date is a tailwind, not an engine. The engine is you, your product, and your team. But if you can catch a tailwind instead of a headwind, it would be foolish not to. That's exactly what choosing an 開業 date does.

In the 開業 tradition, they say: 「天時, 地利, 人和」 — "heaven's timing, earth's advantage, people's harmony." Choosing a date is about "heaven's timing." Pair it with the right place and a strong team, and your launch will have all three pillars of good fortune.
