March in Chicago is slush, in São Paulo it is the end of summer, and in the BaZi calendar it is the month of the Rabbit, 卯 (mǎo), the most "springlike" point of the year. From 驚蟄 (jīng zhé, "awakening of insects"), around March 6, until 清明 (qīng míng, "clear and bright") on April 5, the pillar 癸卯 (guǐ mǎo) is in force. In the middle of the month, around March 20, comes 春分, the spring equinox: day equals night, and Wood stands at its peak.

In one line: 癸 is thin Water, mist, rain, dew; 卯 is young grass and twigs, pure Wood without admixture. Water feeds Wood, so the pillar is soft, damp and growing. But above it stands the year stem 丁, a quiet candle, and between 癸 and 丁 the classics record a clash of stems, 丁癸沖. Meanwhile the branch 卯 forms half of the Wood Three Harmony 亥卯未 with the year branch 未.

It is a contradictory combination, and worth lingering over. Below we look at how it works, which signs and Day Masters it suits and who feels cramped, and what to do about practical matters. The warning is the same as always: this is the general background of the month, with no promises of events. If you want to see how it meets your own pillars, you can calculate your chart for free.

Gui Mao · Rain and the Rabbit
guǐ mǎo · second month of the year 丁未, March 6 – April 4, 2027

1 Rain on a candle: 丁癸沖

Let us start with the most noticeable part. The year stem 丁 is Yin Fire, the flame of a candle, a lamp, an ember in a stove. The month stem 癸 is Yin Water, fine and drizzling. The pair 丁癸 is one of the four classical clashes of Heavenly Stems (together with 甲庚, 乙辛 and 丙壬). The force of a stem clash is considered milder than that of a branch clash, because the stems are the "visible" layer, the setting, and not the core. But in a month where it operates, you often feel an inner "dampening": plans keep burning, but they smoke.

In everyday terms it goes like this: what you considered settled at the start of the year receives clarifications, amendments, new conditions. Not a catastrophe, more of a drizzle that makes the papers damp so that they have to be looked at again. For a Day Master of 丁 the pair feels especially personal, and we come to that in the table below.

2 The Rabbit 卯: pure Wood without admixture

Most branches hide two or three stems, and the character of a branch comes from their mixture. 卯 is a rare exception: inside there is only 乙, Yin Wood. No admixtures. That is why the Rabbit month is considered the "purest" month of spring Wood: growth, flexibility, softness, diplomacy.

For the same reason 卯 can be fragile: it has no hidden reserve of another element to lean on. Wood in the Rabbit month grows fast and reaches for the light, but it breaks easily in a hard wind, which is to say Metal. This is why the branch 酉 (Rooster), which clashes with 卯 along the line 卯酉冲, is the most painful one for people of this sign.

For the elements of a chart, this gives a clear hint. If your Day Master is Wood (甲 or 乙) and Wood is helpful to you, the Rabbit's March works like a tailwind: more strength, ideas come by themselves, starting is easier. If your Day Master is Earth (戊 or 己), the pure Wood of the month presses as control (木克土), and it can feel as though something is constantly being demanded of you; it helps not to argue head-on but to spread tasks out in time. And a Metal Day Master (庚, 辛) should remember that it is precisely the "wind" in question: there is a pull to trim, correct, criticize, and in a month of flexible Wood that easily turns into fault-finding. These shades continue what is gathered in the Day Master table below.

To see how the branch fits into the larger picture of the season, it is worth rereading the material on the month command: in these weeks Wood "commands", and everything else plays around it.

3 Half of the trio 亥卯未

Now the year and month branches. 未 (Goat, the year) and 卯 (Rabbit, the month) belong to the Wood Three Harmony 亥卯未 (hài mǎo wèi). For a full union, 亥, the Pig, is missing. A pair of two members of a trio is called a half Three Harmony (半三合): the pull toward Wood is there, but the element is not definitively formed. In plain language, it feels as though the winds blow in one direction, but nobody is in command.

By itself a half union is weaker than a full trio, but it is also gentler and less "intrusive". It creates an effect: the Rabbit and the Goat are inclined toward each other, and people of these signs understand each other half a word in such a month. At the same time, Wood as an element turns out to be a strong helper in a Fire year in 2027: Wood feeds Fire. How a Three Harmony works is covered in the article on 三合, the Three Harmony.

An important detail for personal charts. If you have 亥 in your natal chart, this month turns into the full trio 亥卯未, and Wood in your life suddenly lifts its head. If you have 未, the month forms a half union inside your personal chart, not only in the chart of the year. If you have no part of the trio at all, you simply experience the month as soft and growth-oriented.

The annual frame deserves a look as well. March is the second month of the year 丁未, and in it the seasonal Wood works for the Fire of the year: the Water of 癸 feeds the Wood of 卯, and the Wood feeds the Fire of 丁. That gives a long chain of generation, 水生木生火, in which each link passes strength to the next. In terms of feeling, tasks started in February receive nourishment in March and begin to grow instead of standing still. At the same time 丁癸沖 at the top of the chain reminds you that while a plan rises from below, it is being dampened from above. March is good for developing what has already been started and for refining details, but not for announcing something big for the first time. Large announcements land more calmly at the end of spring, when the season changes and the chain rearranges itself.

4 The twelve signs in the Rabbit month

Below is the link of the month branch 卯 with each of the twelve branches. The birth-year sign gives a surface layer, while what really works are the four branches of your chart. When the relevant branch stands in the day pillar, the influence is more noticeable.

Sign branchLink with 卯What it means in the 癸卯 month
子 Rat刑 rude punishmentThe Rat and the Rabbit: the punishment for lack of courtesy (無禮之刑). Watch your tone in conversation, good manners and promises.
丑 Oxno direct linkNo direct link. The Ox goes evenly but feels that spring takes longer to arrive for it than for others.
寅 Tigerhalf 三會 Directional CombinationA seasonal gathering of Wood (half): the Tiger feels lift, energy and confidence, and stays close to a strong element.
卯 Rabbit伏吟 fu yin, doublingYour own month, the branch repeats. The Rabbit is more visible, more sensitive and carries more of other people's expectations.
辰 Dragonhalf 三會, 害 harmA seasonal gathering, but with harm: support is present, yet other people's trifles irritate and sting.
巳 Snakeno direct linkNo direct link. The Snake watches calmly, Fire is fed by Wood, and it is possible to act.
午 Horse破 destructionDestruction: the Horse and the Rabbit wear each other down. Quarrels over small things and revised plans are possible.
未 Goathalf 三合 Three HarmonyA half Wood union: your own year and a friendly month. Good for communication and for supporting those close to you.
申 Monkeyno direct linkNo direct link. The Monkey keeps its distance, but Metal around is weakened, so the pressure is small.
酉 Rooster冲 clashThe main clash of the month: Metal cuts Wood. Changes, quarrels, turns in plans.
戌 Dog六合 Six HarmonyThe union 卯戌: the Dog and the Rabbit find a common language. A good month for relationships, though the Dog affects the rhythm.
亥 Pighalf 三合 Three HarmonyA Wood union: the Pig and the Rabbit, together with the Goat of the year, close the trio. Growth, lucky coincidences, support.

The most strained pair of the month is the Rabbit and the Rooster: 卯酉冲 (mǎo-yǒu chōng) is considered one of the sharpest clashes, because it is the clash of Wood and Metal, axe and branch. A quieter but very recognizable story belongs to the Rat: 子卯刑, "the punishment of rudeness", often linked with relationships in which one side breaks the unwritten rules of courtesy. Another view of such combinations is in the articles on punishments and harms 害.

5 What the stem 癸 means for different Day Masters

The rain of 癸 falls on each Day Master in its own way. The Ten God column is calculated from the scheme of generation and control of the elements, and the right-hand column explains how it is felt:

Day Master癸 for themHow it sounds this month
Yang Wood (甲)正印 Direct ResourceWater as a Direct Resource: support, a mentor, study. A good month to learn and recover, and to put documents in order.
Yin Wood (乙)偏印 Indirect ResourceWater as an Indirect Resource: unusual sources of knowledge, self-teaching; it is quiet inside, so you may withdraw too far.
Yang Fire (丙)正官 Direct OfficerFine Water presses as a Direct Officer: rules, bosses, requirements. Order and responsibility help.
Yin Fire (丁)七殺 Seven KillingsA stem clash and Seven Killings: pressure, urgent matters. You need a time reserve and a calm schedule.
Yang Earth (戊)正財 Direct WealthThe combination 戊癸 and Direct Wealth: money, partnership, agreements. Good for proposals and deals, but without haste.
Yin Earth (己)偏財 Indirect WealthSudden opportunities and gains, and the temptation to take a risk. A cool head helps.
Yang Metal (庚)傷官 Hurting OfficerA sharp tongue, criticism, rebellion against rules. Suited to creativity, worse for formalities.
Yin Metal (辛)食神 Eating GodTalent, taste, pleasure in the work. A month for creative and practical projects.
Yang Water (壬)劫財 Rob WealthCompetition and shared money. Beware of guarantees for other people and vague agreements.
Yin Water (癸)比肩 FriendYou and your like-minded people. Teamwork goes well, but excessive self-confidence is possible.

There is a special case for the Day Master 戊: 戊癸合, a combination of stems. It connects the person with the idea of partnership, marriage, a contract, and in the Rabbit month that line comes to the fore. The mechanics of such combinations are in the article on 天干合. The Day Master 丁 has the hardest time: both the clash and Seven Killings fall on it. That sounds threatening, but in the classics 七殺 in a well-built chart gives discipline, not just pressure.

6 Work, negotiations, personal life

Work. The month suits everything that grows: hiring, training, launching small projects, newsletters, publications. Water feeds Wood and Wood feeds the Fire year, so the general trajectory of the month is upward. Be careful with sudden movements: if a project rests on a single channel or a single person, insure against it in advance.

Negotiations. Because of 丁癸沖, clarifications come into play: an agreement reached in the first week may be revised in the third. Put things in writing and leave a window for amendments. The best days for signing lie in the middle of the month, around the equinox, when Wood has fully unfolded.

Money and resources. The pure Wood of the month pulls toward investing in growth, such as training, tools and new directions, and on the whole that is justified as long as the investment is meant to pay back. The danger of a soft 卯 is different: sprawl. Wood sends out shoots in all directions, and March makes it easy to take on more commitments, subscriptions and promises than you can carry. A simple seasonal rule: before adding something new, prune one old thing. It is the everyday analogue of a gardener shaping the crown in spring, and for the Rabbit month the image works literally.

Personal life. In the classics the branch 卯 is the 桃花 (táo huā, Peach Blossom) for those born in the years of the Tiger, Horse and Dog (寅午戌). For them March is particularly noticeable in relationships and communication. For everyone else the month has no such coloring. What the star means in general is covered in a separate article on Peach Blossom.

There is also a second line concerning relationships, the half union 亥卯未 itself. For Rabbits and Goats, March takes shape agreeably: two members of the Wood trio are drawn to each other, and people of these signs find it easier to understand the other person and more willingly meet them halfway. If your chart contains 亥 (Pig), the month completes the full trio, and the themes of closeness, shared plans and joint projects come forward noticeably. It is important not to confuse this soft pull with a promise of a "fateful meeting": a union describes the general mood of a period, not a specific event, and how it plays out in your life depends on whether Wood is useful to you in the full chart.

A small practical test. Open your chart and look for 亥, 卯 and 未. If at least two of the three are present, this month is special for you: the Wood union in your personal chart switches on. If you have none, the month works as a general background.

7 Rest and well-being, without medical conclusions

For well-being, the classics associate Wood with the liver and tendons and Water with the kidneys. We do not treat or diagnose here; this is a system of images. But a practical remark is possible: in a month of strong Wood, gentle stretching, walks and a regular sleep schedule are better than intensive training to exhaustion. If something is urging you to drop an evening habit and "start on Monday", March is a good time.

It is best to rest where there is greenery and water: a park, a river, a greenhouse. The feeling of "spring in the head" lasts until 清明, the beginning of the next month, 甲辰, which already leads back toward household chores and order.

Laid out by weeks, the month looks like this. The first week after 驚蟄, roughly March 6 to 12, still carries the inertia of winter's 丑: people switch on slowly and forcing things is pointless. The second and third weeks, around 春分 (about March 20), are the peak of Wood and the best window for launches, meetings, publications and signings: the day already equals the night and the energy of the season has unfolded completely. The last week, before 清明, is good for finishing what has been started and preparing for a "practical" April, not for beginning something new. Given 丁癸沖 at the level of the year, important agreements are best fixed in writing in the middle of the month, when the ground is firmest.

8 How to check the month against your own chart

A small example for orientation. Suppose a person has the Day Master 辛, and the chart contains 酉 and 子. For them the month 癸卯 brings 食神 (Eating God) through 癸, which is the pleasant side, but at the same time the Rabbit clashes with the Rooster and "punishes" the Rat. The conclusion from such an example is not "March will be bad" but "in March, look more carefully at relationships and the people around you, while creative work goes well". Two different layers are read independently, and the conclusion comes from both.

One more example with the opposite sign. If the chart contains 亥 and 未, then in the Rabbit month the full Wood trio 亥卯未 forms, and Wood in your life lifts its head: people, ideas, growth. If Wood is a useful element for you, that is the luck of the season. If it is harmful, you will need to guard against overload, sprawl of commitments and other people's expectations.

Any forecast for a month describes an average temperature, while your chart is a specific body. To understand the personal meaning of 癸卯, check four things: your Day Master; whether your chart has 亥, 卯, 未, 酉 or 子; the position of Water and Wood (whether they are useful to you, which is decided by the 用神 yòng shén); and your current luck pillar. If Wood is a useful element for you, March can be one of the best months of the year, and if it is harmful, the most tiring.

A month is general background, not fate. The precise picture comes only from a full chart: date, time and place of birth. The general logic of reading monthly pillars is in the material on 流月 and in the 2027 calendar by month.

9 Frequently asked questions

When does the Rabbit month begin in BaZi in 2027?

The 癸卯 month opens with the node 驚蟄, around March 6, 2027, and ends around April 4, before 清明. The exact time depends on the moment of the astronomical transition.

What does 亥卯未 mean in this month?

In the Rabbit month the year 未 and the month 卯 form two of the three members: a half Wood union. The full trio appears only if 亥 is also present in your personal chart or luck pillar.

Why is 丁癸沖 not a catastrophe?

A clash of Heavenly Stems is considered milder than a clash of branches. It is a feeling that plans are getting "damp" and need clarifying, not an event that destroys something.

Which sign has the hardest March?

The Rooster: 酉 clashes with 卯, one of the sharpest pairs. A little softer but still noticeable for the Rat (子卯刑), the Dragon (害) and the Horse (破).

Is this a good month to start something new?

Wood is growing and Water feeds it, so the general background supports beginnings. But for a specific date you need to check against your chart; the month gives no guarantees.
