流年 Liu Nian — The Current Year
as the third layer of luck

When people first come to BaZi from popular astrology, they often ask: "So what will happen to me this year?" And they expect an answer like "it's the Year of the Dragon — success in your career." In reality, in the classical Ziping school canon and its modern presentations, the annual forecast is Liu Nian (流年 (liú nián — "the current year")), and it's nothing like a "year sign." It's an entire system in which the annual pillar interacts with the eight characters of your chart and with your current Luck Pillar (Da Yun, 大運 (dà yùn — "Luck Pillars")).

The character 流 means "flow," and 年 means "year." Together: "the current year," "the annual flow." Every year arrives with its own heavenly stem and earthly branch, and this pair interacts with your entire chart. Understanding the rules of this interaction lets you forecast the themes, strengths, and risks of a specific calendar period.

1 What the Liu Nian annual pillar is

The annual pillar is two characters denoting the current solar year within the Chinese 60-year Jiǎ-Zǐ (甲子) cycle. The first character is the heavenly stem (天干), the second is the earthly branch (地支). For example, 2026 is Bǐng-Wǔ (丙午): the stem Bǐng (Yang Fire) and the branch Wǔ (Horse, Yin Fire).

This pillar exists alongside the four pillars of your birth chart (year, month, day, hour) and your current Da Yun pillar. So at any moment in life, six pillars act on you: the four natal ones, plus Da Yun, plus Liu Nian. And it's exactly Liu Nian that's the "trigger" — it activates or defuses the events built into the chart.

It's important to understand: Liu Nian is not a sentence and not a gift. It's the energetic theme of the year, and it lands differently on different charts. The same 2026 Bǐng-Wǔ year makes one person a star, and drives another into burnout. Everything depends on how the year's stem and branch interact with your eight characters.

2 How Liu Nian interacts with the chart and Da Yun

To read Liu Nian correctly, you need to work on three levels at once:

1. The natal chart — the foundation. What's built in at birth, which of the 10 gods sits where, who your Day Master is, how the elements relate to each other.
2. Da Yun (大運, the 10-year Luck Pillar) — the current cycle. This is the "set design" for 10 years, the theme of the decade.
3. Liu Nian (流年) — the specific year within that cycle.

First we look at the natal chart: we identify the Day Master, its strength, and the favorable elements (Yong Shen, 用神 (yòng shén — the "Useful God")). Then we overlay the Da Yun, which strengthens or suppresses certain elements for 10 years. And only then, Liu Nian, which triggers the specific events of the year.

An example. Say your Day Master is Jiǎ (甲, Yang Wood), and you need Fire as your Yong Shen (to unlock your talent). Right now you're in a Bǐng-Chén (丙辰) Da Yun — a decade of Fire and Earth. That's already a favorable backdrop. And then 2026 Bǐng-Wǔ arrives — even more Fire. A triple overlay of Fire (natal → Da Yun → Liu Nian) gives you a breakthrough year: public recognition, acclaim, monetizing your talents.

But imagine the reverse. A Day Master of Bǐng (丙, Yang Fire), already strong, needs Water. A Gēng-Shēn (庚申, Metal) Da Yun is already creating pressure. And a Bǐng-Wǔ 2026 Liu Nian is fire on top of fire, with no water. A triple dryness — burnout, conflicts, heart problems.

3 The year's stem vs. the year's branch — different roles

In Liu Nian, the stem and the branch play different roles. This is a critically important point most amateurs miss.

The year's stem (天干) — outward events and visible themes

The heavenly stem governs what happens "outside," what other people can see. These are career events, public situations, relationships with people, visible movements of money. The year's stem directly clashes or combines with the stems of your chart (year, month, day, hour) — and events are born out of these interactions.

If the year's stem is, say, Bǐng (丙, Yang Fire), and your Day stem is Rén (壬, Yang Water), that's a Fire-Water clash — a conflict. The year's theme: outside pressure, a test of your principles, important public decisions.

The year's branch (地支) — inner processes and long-term change

The earthly branch governs what happens "deeper down": emotional processes, hidden conflicts, changes within the family, health. The year's branch interacts with the chart's branches through specific rules: chōng (冲, clash), hé (合, combination), hài (害, harm), xíng (刑, punishment).

In 2026 the branch is Wǔ (午, Horse). If your chart has a Zǐ (子, Rat) branch, there'll be a Zǐ-Wǔ chōng, a direct clash. This will trigger changes exactly in the life domain where Zǐ sits (year = family, month = career, day = marriage, hour = children).

4 Which of the 10 gods gets activated each year

The Ten Gods (十神) are BaZi's "language." They describe what a specific element is to your Day Master. And it's through the Ten Gods that we translate "Bǐng-Wǔ 2026" into the language of real-life events.

The principle is simple. Take the year's stem and identify which of the 10 gods it is for your Day Master. Then do the same for the main hidden stem of the year's branch. Together, that gives you the year's "dual theme."

The Ten Gods and their life domains

• Bǐ Jiān (比肩 (bǐ jiān — "shoulder to shoulder")) and Jié Cái (劫財 (jié cái — "the wealth robber")) — friends and rivals. A year of friendships and partnerships, but also of spending through people close to you.
• Shí Shén (食神 (shí shén — the "Eating God")) and Shāng Guān (傷官 (shāng guān — the "Hurting Officer")) — self-expression. Creativity, children, public life, rebellion against the system.
• Zhèng Cái (正財 (zhèng cái — "Direct Wealth")) and Piān Cái (偏財 (piān cái — "Indirect Wealth")) — money. Salary, assets, for a man the wife. Business.
• Zhèng Guān (正官 (zhèng guān — the "Direct Officer")) and Qī Shā (七殺 (qī shā — "seven killings")) — power and pressure. Career, superiors, laws, for a woman the husband.
• Zhèng Yìn (正印 (zhèng yìn — "Direct Resource")) and Piān Yìn (偏印 (piān yìn — "Indirect Resource")) — support. Knowledge, education, your mother, real estate.

Say your Day Master is Dīng (丁, Yin Fire). In 2026 Bǐng-Wǔ, the year's stem Bǐng is your Jié Cái (a rival). The Wǔ branch's main hidden stem is Dīng (yourself), plus Jǐ (己, Yin Earth = your Shí Shén, children/creativity) and Yǐ (乙, Yin Wood = your Piān Yìn, unconventional support).

The decoding for a Dīng Day Master in 2026: through Jié Cái, the year warns of competition and spending through people close to you; through Shí Shén it promises creative projects and the theme of children; through Piān Yìn it brings unexpected knowledge and meeting a mentor. Real life weaves these themes into a single story.

5 A Chōng with your birth day — the most dangerous

Chōng (冲) is a "clash" between branches, a standoff between six pairs. The most famous: Zǐ-Wǔ (子-午), Chǒu-Wèi (丑-未), Yín-Shēn (寅-申), Mǎo-Yǒu (卯-酉), Chén-Xū (辰-戌), Sì-Hài (巳-亥). When the year's branch chōngs your day branch, it's considered one of the strongest events of the year in BaZi.

The day is you yourself, and your marriage palace. A chōng with the day means your foundations are shaking. This can look like:

• A move, a change of home, a change of country.
• A crisis in marriage — a flare-up, a divorce, or, conversely, a wedding (if the chart overall is favorable and the person is single).
• A job change, getting fired, moving into a new field.
• Injuries, surgery — especially if the year's branch carries fire/metal and clashes with water/wood.
• Deep psychological change — an identity crisis, psychotherapy, a spiritual search.

How to read a chōng with the other pillars

• A chōng with the birth year — changes in your parents' family, in your lineage, in your country of residence.
• A chōng with the month — career, your professional environment, superiors, siblings.
• A chōng with the day — you and your partner, marriage, core beliefs.
• A chōng with the hour — children, creative projects, later life.

6 Hé combinations with the year — harmony and transformation

If chōng is a clash, hé (合) is a union, a merging. Hé combinations in the Liu Nian show that the year will bring harmonious unions: partnerships, alliances, marriages, business tie-ups.

Stem combinations (天干合)

Five pairs of heavenly stems form unions, each transforming both sides into a new element:

• Jiǎ + Jǐ (甲己) → Earth. The union of "loyalty" — stability, reliability.
• Yǐ + Gēng (乙庚) → Metal. The union of "honesty" — structure, discipline.
• Bǐng + Xīn (丙辛) → Water. The union of "sincerity" — depth, philosophy.
• Dīng + Rén (丁壬) → Wood. The union of "love" — growth, romance, emotion.
• Wù + Guǐ (戊癸) → Fire. The union of "expression" — passion, being seen.

If the 2026 year's stem is Bǐng, and your chart has a Xīn, you'll get a Bǐng-Xīn hé → Water. The year's theme, through this union: "sincere partnerships that shift your life's direction toward depth." If the hé lands on your day stem, it's often a year of marriage or a serious partnership.

Branch combinations

Liù Hé (六合 (liù hé — "the six unions")) — six paired branch unions: Zǐ-Chǒu, Yín-Hài, Mǎo-Xū, Chén-Yǒu, Sì-Shēn, Wǔ-Wèi. In 2026, the Wǔ branch forms a hé with Wèi (未, Goat). If your chart has a Wèi, the year brings reinforcement, union, warm relationships.

Sān Hé (三合 (sān hé — "triple unions")) — a three-way combination: three branches unite and transform into one strong element. Hài-Mǎo-Wèi → Wood, Yín-Wǔ-Xū → Fire, Sì-Yǒu-Chǒu → Metal, Shēn-Zǐ-Chén → Water. If the year supplies the third, missing branch, the chart "activates" a strong theme.

7 Signs of a favorable year — what to look at

A year is considered favorable if at least a few of these conditions hold:

1. The year's stem = your Yong Shen (Useful Element). The main blessing.
2. The year's branch carries favorable hidden stems, and they're not blocked by chōngs and punishments.
3. A hé with the day or month produces a needed element. For example, for a Jiǎ Day Master, a Dīng-Rén hé produces even more Wood — support.
4. The year's 10 gods activate favorable roles: for a poor chart, Zhèng Cái (wealth); for a weak DM, Yìn (support); and so on.
5. There's no chōng with the day palace, no triple punishment, no "dangerous trios."
6. The year matches the Da Yun's theme, not contradicting it. When Da Yun and Liu Nian pull "the same direction," a breakthrough follows.

Signs of a "star" year: everything you'd planned before falls into place quickly; resources arrive on their own; the right people show up; health holds steady; you have the energy for long projects.

8 Signs of a difficult year — where to be careful

A year is considered risky if:

1. The year's stem = your Jì Shén (Unfavorable Element). Outside pressure, depletion.
2. A chōng with the day branch — especially with the Marriage Palace branch.
3. A triple punishment (Zǐ-Mǎo, Yín-Sì-Shēn, Chǒu-Xū-Wèi) is activated by the year's arrival.
4. An already-strong DM is strengthened further into "stubbornness" — overconfidence, conflicts.
5. Shí Shén facing Qī Shā or other classic dangerous structures are activated.
6. The year repeats a Da Yun that's already suppressing you — a double dose of an unfavorable element.

Key warnings

• A year with a Chōng-Tài-Suì (反吟伏吟) — when the annual pillar directly clashes with your birth-year pillar. A classic "hard" year, especially within the 60-year cycle.
• A Tài Suì year (本命年, běn mìng nián) — the year of your own sign. It brings change and a mandatory "reckoning with yourself."
• A year of triple Qī Shā activation — especially heavy pressure, a risk of conflicts with the law, with superiors.

9 Specific domains — career, love, money, health

There's no universal "annual forecast" — there's a forecast per domain. Each domain is read through its own god and its own pillar.

Career

Career is read through Guān-Shā (官殺, Zhèng Guān and Qī Shā). If the year's stem forces your DM through a Guān-Shā, it's a year of career decisions. A strong DM + a good Guān = a promotion. A weak DM + Qī Shā = conflict with superiors, pressure, getting let go.

Love and marriage

We read love through the day palace and through the partner star. For a man, that's Cái (財, wealth = wife). For a woman, that's Guān (官, officer = husband). If the year activates Cái (for a man) or Guān (for a woman) and there's a hé with the day — it's a year of meeting someone or getting married. If there's a chōng with the day, it's a year of relationship crisis.

Money

Money is Cái (財). Zhèng Cái is stable income, a salary. Piān Cái is unstable, one-off, investments, business. If Cái appears in the year, there's financial activity. But! Cái for a weak DM can actually mean loss — the DM "can't hold onto" the wealth. The DM's strength matters here.

Health

Health is its own topic. Each element governs its own organs:

• Wood — liver, gallbladder, eyes, tendons.
• Fire — heart, small intestine, blood, the psyche.
• Earth — spleen, stomach, muscles, the GI tract.
• Metal — lungs, large intestine, skin.
• Water — kidneys, bladder, bones, reproduction.

If the year's element is excessive and attacks an already-weak organ in the chart, problems are possible. For example, a Fire year for a Metal Day Master puts the lungs at risk.

10 Example: the 2026 Bǐng-Wǔ year, for different Day Masters

Let's take 2026 — Bǐng-Wǔ (丙午). The stem Bǐng is Yang Fire, the branch Wǔ is Yin Fire. This is the so-called "horse" year, a year of pure fire (天干地支同氣, stem and branch of the same element). Fire in 2026 is especially strong.

Hidden stems in Wǔ: Dīng (丁, Yin Fire, primary), Jǐ (己, Yin Earth). So the year is dominated by Fire, with Earth just beneath the surface.

For a Jiǎ (甲, Yang Wood) Day Master

Bǐng, for Jiǎ, is Shí Shén (食神, the god of creativity, children, self-expression). The Wǔ branch's Dīng is Shāng Guān (傷官, the god of rebellion, fame, scandal). A year of creative explosion: public projects, media, performances, having children. The danger: burnout and conflict with superiors, through Shāng Guān. Wood's strength is spent into Fire — drink more water, rest.

For a Rén (壬, Yang Water) Day Master

Bǐng, for Rén, is Piān Cái (偏財, unconventional wealth, business, and for a man, a mistress). The Wǔ branch's Dīng is Zhèng Cái (正財, stable wealth, the wife). A double financial year! Major deals and business luck are possible. For a man, a year of romantic events. But if the DM is weak, Cái turns into an attack, and money can be lost.

For a Gēng (庚, Yang Metal) Day Master

Bǐng, for Gēng, is Qī Shā (七殺, the heavy officer, pressure). The Wǔ branch's Dīng is Zhèng Guān (正官, the officer, authority, and for a woman, the husband). A year of career pressure and testing. For a woman, marriage is possible. For a man, major responsibility, possibly a serious career shift. Fire chops Metal — lung health is at risk.

For a Bǐng (丙, Yang Fire) Day Master

Bǐng-Wǔ, for Bǐng, is Bǐ Jiān (比肩, your own double) and your own element. If the DM is weak, it's a year of revival, support from friends, gaining confidence. If the DM is strong, it's an overdose of Fire — conflicts, burnout, losing money through friends. A very polarizing year.

For a Guǐ (癸, Yin Water) Day Master

Bǐng, for Guǐ, is Zhèng Cái. The Wǔ branch's Dīng is Piān Cái. A financial activation, like for Rén. Guǐ is delicate dew — it can "evaporate" under Fire if the DM is weak. It needs Metal's support, education, real estate, your mother.

This is only the basic framework. An exact forecast accounts for all eight characters of your chart, your current Da Yun, chōng-hé with specific pillars, a month-by-month run through the year, and much more. But even a basic understanding of Liu Nian already gives you a huge advantage — you stop drifting in the current at random.

Remember: Liu Nian isn't a prediction along the lines of "it'll be good/bad." It's a navigator. Knowing which themes are activated in a given year, you can consciously choose where to put your effort, what to avoid, when to push events forward, and when to step back. BaZi doesn't replace your will — it gives that will a map of the terrain.
