How to Read a BaZi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

You entered your birth date, got your chart back — and now you're looking at a set of characters, elements, and percentages. What do you do with all that? In this article we'll break down the structure of a BaZi chart step by step: from the overall layout to the specific questions it answers.

The BaZi system (八字, literally "eight characters") is built on the idea that the moment of your birth — year, month, day, and hour — is encoded in eight characters. Four pairs, four pillars, eight characters. That's where the name comes from.

Step 1: The Four Pillars — the chart's frame

Each pillar consists of two characters: a heavenly stem (天干) on top, and an earthly branch (地支) below. The four pillars are four moments in time from your birth:

Step 2: Heavenly Stems — visible energy

The heavenly stems (天干, tiān gān) are the top character of each pillar. There are ten in total, two for each element:

• 甲 Jiǎ / 乙 Yǐ — Wood (Yang / Yin)
• 丙 Bǐng / 丁 Dīng — Fire (Yang / Yin)
• 戊 Wù / 己 Jǐ — Earth (Yang / Yin)
• 庚 Gēng / 辛 Xīn — Metal (Yang / Yin)
• 壬 Rén / 癸 Guǐ — Water (Yang / Yin)

The heavenly stems are visible energy. They're apparent at a glance, act directly, and shape the core character of each pillar. The Day stem is your Day Master. The Month stem shows the dominant element of your birth season. The Year stem is the outer context of your generation.

Step 3: Earthly Branches — hidden depth

The earthly branches (地支, dì zhī) are the bottom character of each pillar. There are twelve, and each corresponds to one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac:

子 (Rat) · 丑 (Ox) · 寅 (Tiger) · 卯 (Rabbit) · 辰 (Dragon) · 巳 (Snake) · 午 (Horse) · 未 (Goat) · 申 (Monkey) · 酉 (Rooster) · 戌 (Dog) · 亥 (Pig)

But unlike the stems, each branch holds hidden stems inside it — anywhere from one to three. This creates layers of meaning: a branch's visible element can differ from what's hidden within it.

Step 4: Determine the elemental balance

Look at all eight characters in the chart (plus the hidden stems) and count how much energy falls to each element. Our service does this automatically — you'll see the percentage breakdown of the five elements.

There's no such thing as a perfect balance — every person has their own unique mix. But understanding what you have in excess and what's lacking gives you the key to interpretation:

• An element in excess means the area of life tied to that element will be "overheated." Plenty of energy, but plenty of conflict too.
• A shortage of an element means the corresponding area is weakened. It needs outside support — through lucky periods, your surroundings, or deliberate action.

Step 5: Find your Day Master and its strength

Your Day Master is the heavenly stem of your birth day. It's the center of the chart, your "self." The first question in any analysis: how strong is it?

A Day Master is considered strong if:

• The chart has plenty of elements matching it (for example, Wood for a Wood Day Master)
• The birth month supports its element (born in "its own" season)
• There's an element that nourishes it (Water for Wood, Wood for Fire, and so on)

A Day Master is considered weak if it's surrounded by controlling or draining elements, with little support.

Your Day Master's strength determines which elements are favorable for you: a strong one needs elements that spend its energy, a weak one needs elements that support it.

Step 6: The Ten Gods — the roles elements play

Every element in the chart plays a specific role relative to your Day Master. These roles are called the Ten Gods (十神):

• Friend / Rob Wealth — the element matching your Day Master. Competition, camaraderie, social activity.
• Self-Expression / Rebel — the element your Day Master produces. Creativity, children, ideas.
• Direct / Indirect Wealth — the element your Day Master controls. Finances, property; for men, the wife.
• Direct / Indirect Power — the element that controls your Day Master. Discipline, career, status; for women, the husband.
• Direct / Indirect Resource — the element that nourishes your Day Master. Support, knowledge, your mother, mentors.

Step 7: Luck Pillars — what lies ahead

Beyond your natal chart (which is fixed forever), every person moves through a series of Luck Pillars (大运) — 10-year periods that overlay the chart and shift its elemental balance.

Luck Pillars are calculated from the Month Pillar. They show which elements will dominate during each period of your life. A favorable pillar is one that brings the elements you need. An unfavorable one deepens your imbalance.

If you just got your chart, here's a minimal plan for your first analysis:

1. Find your Day Master — the top character of your Day Pillar. Read what it means.
2. Look at your elemental balance — what's in excess, what's lacking.
3. Identify your birth season — which month, and which element dominates it.
4. Study your current Luck Pillar — which elements are affecting you right now.
5. Ask the Oracle a question — something specific about career, relationships, or health.
