Open any list of "bad zodiac pairs" and the Tiger and the Snake are very likely to be on it. The source of the warning is entirely real: in the classical theory of branches there are two links between 寅 (yín, the Tiger) and 巳 (sì, the Snake) that are considered unpleasant. The first is the Harm 六害 (liù hài); the second is their share in the triple Punishment 寅巳申 (yín-sì-shēn). But once you look at what these words mean in practice, the picture softens a great deal. Besides, the elements of the pair are quite friendly: the Tiger's Wood gives birth to the Snake's Fire in the cycle.
This article looks at how two things fit together, a "bad" branch structure and a "good" elemental one, and what to do with them in a real couple. The main point first: the birth-year sign is one layer out of eight characters, and a harm and a punishment in the charts of two people carry weight only when those branches stand in significant places, above all in the Spouse Palaces.
A separate section is devoted to 2027, because for the Snake that year has an unexpectedly vivid feature, while the Tiger passes through it neutrally.
1 The Harm 寅巳: what it is
The Six Harms 六害 are pairs of branches that interfere with combinations. The idea is that each of the two branches strikes the natural ally of the other. The Tiger is in harmony with the Pig 亥 (寅亥合), but the Snake clashes with the Pig (巳亥冲). The Snake is friends with the Monkey 申 (巳申合), but the Tiger clashes with the Monkey (寅申冲). So each, without wishing to, interferes with the other's alliance. In a relationship this is felt as a faint, hidden reticence, petty jealousy, an awkwardness that is hard to pin down. A harm is usually considered weak: it does not break, it wears away. The link is described in detail in the article on the Six Harms 害.
In a chart the harm shows itself not alone but through the place where the branches stand. If they are in the Spouse Palaces, we are talking about hidden grievances within intimacy. If one is in the day and the other in the year, it is about family and origins. In the hour pillar, it is about children and later life.
2 The Punishment 寅巳申: why an incomplete triple is not a catastrophe
Punishment 刑 (xíng) is a more serious category. The triple 寅巳申 is called the "punishment of relying on power" 恃勢之刑 (shì shì zhī xíng): each side is thought to lean on its own weight and position and not give way. In full, when all three branches are present in a chart, it can describe situations in which people are close but argue from a position of strength and push their own line. In a pair of two signs the third branch is absent, so such a link cannot be called a full punishment. It is a potential that activates when 申 appears in the chart or in the year. We covered it more fully in the article on Punishments 刑.
Note that 巳 and 申 form a Six Harmony 六合 and, at the same time, a Six Destruction 六破. This duality is typical: branches interact in several modes at once. The classics require looking at which mode is stronger in the specific chart rather than delivering a verdict on one.
| Link | What forms it | How to read it for a couple |
|---|---|---|
| 害 harm | 寅 and 巳 | A wearing-away link; more often a feeling of things left unsaid than a scandal |
| 刑 punishment | 寅巳申, 申 is still needed | Incomplete: a potential that comes alive when 申 appears in the chart or in time |
| Elements | Wood gives birth to Fire | The Tiger feeds the Snake; the pair has warmth and a sense of "you charge me up" |
| Shared hidden stems | 丙 and 戊 are in both | A common language: Fire and Earth, joy in work and at home |
3 The elements say otherwise: fire and firewood
Now the opposite side. The Tiger's hidden stems are 甲, 丙, 戊; the Snake's are 丙, 庚, 戊. The two share 丙 (bǐng) and 戊 (wù), that is, Yang Fire and Yang Earth. In everyday terms that means a common language on questions of warmth, brightness, sociability and home comfort. The Snake is itself Fire, and Wood is its fuel. So beside a Tiger the Snake usually feels supported, and beside a Snake the Tiger feels that his energy is going somewhere useful.
But the Snake holds 庚 (gēng), Yang Metal, and by the rules of control it chops 甲, the Tiger's main stem. Is that not too frightening? No: the 庚 in the Snake is weak and embryonic, lying at the bottom (the "birth" stage of Metal, 長生 cháng shēng). Still, it exists, and in suitable circumstances it exerts pressure. The Snake's visible fire sometimes covers a "small hatchet" of calculation, and the Tiger, used to directness, notices it late. Because of this duality the Tiger–Snake pair is closer to a "warm union with reservations" than to a "cursed combination."
4 Love and marriage: warmth, jealousy, secrets
Partners often describe such a pair as a strong attraction with slight instability. The Snake 巳 also has a strong tendency to reserve: it reveals its plans as needed. The Tiger, for his part, takes any pause as a signal and asks directly. Direct questions worry the Snake; silence worries the Tiger. That is the everyday expression of the harm: not a war but a growing awkwardness.
What helps in practice is agreeing on a way to share. The Tiger needs words ("what's going on with you?"); the Snake needs time. The formula "I'll tell you within a day" works. The Tiger gets certainty, the Snake gets distance. It also helps to agree in advance on financial transparency: secret spending and things left unsaid about money are the most common place where a wearing-away link turns into a real conflict.
Which of the two is which matters too, though only a little. A Tiger man and a Snake woman often make a pair in which he announces loudly and she decides quietly; the reverse arrangement frequently produces a Tiger woman who takes responsibility for action and a Snake man who takes it for strategy. These are tendencies, and in charts with a strong Day Master they flip easily.
One more observation. Partners with a harm in their day branches are often very attached: it is hard for them to leave each other even when that would be sensible. The classics link this with the fact that a harm acts "from within," not as an outside blow. So the strength of the pair is determined not by the absence of friction but by the ability to talk about it. For more on how the branches in the Spouse Palace lie on a relationship, see marriage in BaZi.
Separately, about the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮. If 寅 and 巳 stand in the day branches of both, the harm and the incomplete punishment work at the level of intimacy itself, and then it is worth seeing what compensates for the link: combinations elsewhere in the chart, the needed element, soft stems. If the signs are only in your birth years while your days are quite different, the whole story about the harm remains theory, and the real union is decided by something else. This is exactly why an article about birth-year signs has no right to give a pair a grade; it only explains what to look at next.
5 Friendship and work
In working relationships the pair's elements come forward and the harm recedes. The Tiger thinks up and launches; the Snake analyzes, sees hidden risks and negotiates. When there is trust in the project, this pair is effective: the Tiger is not afraid to act, and the Snake keeps him from running into the obvious pitfalls. Good niches are consulting, finance, research, anything that needs a combination of decisiveness and thoughtfulness.
Risk arises where money and information are unevenly distributed. If the Tiger does not know what the Snake is doing and the Snake does not discuss her decisions, the partnership slides into parallel efforts. Transparent reports, a shared document with goals and one regular meeting a week rescue it. It sounds dull, but dull mechanisms neutralize wearing-away links best of all.
Check what is really in your couple
A harm and a punishment of branches read differently in different charts. A Couple Compatibility Reading shows where the Tiger–Snake link actually appears in your couple and where it stays in the background.

Things left unsaid. The Tiger asks, the Snake is silent. Introduce a rule of answering within a day.
Jealousy and checking up. If one partner has started checking on the other, this is no longer the harm of branches but the result of accumulated reticence. Return to a direct conversation about boundaries.
No pressure by position. An echo of the "punishment of relying on power": each is inclined to push their own line. Agree in advance who decides in which area, rather than sorting it out in an argument.
Speed of decision. The Tiger decides fast, the Snake slowly. Give the Snake the right to a pause within agreed limits and the Tiger the right to a "stop" after three days of silence.
Money. A shared budget with three parts: ours, mine, yours. No exceptions.
7 2027: the Snake in the Goat year, with the Tiger beside her
The year 2027 is 丁未, the Fire Goat. It begins around 4 February (立春), and Tai Sui 太歲 is the branch 未. The Tiger has no direct links with the Goat, so it is a neutral year. The Snake is different: 巳 and 未 belong to the Directional Combination 三會 巳午未 (sì-wǔ-wèi, Fire, summer). It is incomplete, with the Horse 午 missing, but it already sets the direction of the year for the Snake: a bright, fiery background, higher visibility, energy for action.
The missing branch is brought by the month 丙午 (6 June to 6 July 2027): for the Snake the full seasonal combination 巳午未 closes in that period. In the same month the Tiger gets half of the Three Harmony 寅午戌 and benefits from the shared "summer" energy of the pair. In the month 戊申 (8 August to 7 September), however, the branch 申 is activated: the whole triple 寅巳申 appears, provided the couple's charts really do hold both the Tiger and the Snake. We make no predictions from this, but it is natural to expect a bit more roughness around questions of "who owes whom what." Watch your wording and do not decide things in irritation. More on the Snake's year in 2027 for the Snake.
| Month in 2027 | Link in the pair |
|---|---|
| 乙巳, 6 May – 5 Jun | The Snake's month: 巳 is doubled and, in relation to the Tiger, strengthens the harm 寅巳. |
| 丙午, 6 Jun – 6 Jul | For the Snake, the full combination 巳午未; for the Tiger, half of the triple 寅午戌. A charged, warm period. |
| 戊申, 8 Aug – 7 Sep | The branch 申 closes the punishment 寅巳申 and brings the clash 寅申 for the Tiger. A time for careful wording. |
| 辛亥, 7 Nov – 6 Dec | For the Snake, 巳亥 is a clash 冲; for the Tiger, 寅亥 is a harmony tinged with destruction. A month of change, especially for the Snake. |
For the Snake the year also has a reverse side. There is a lot of Fire in 2027: the stem 丁, the summer branch 未 with the same 丁 inside, and in June and July a full summer combination on top. If the Snake's chart already has enough Fire, the summer can pass in overheating: many tasks, many people, little sleep, flares of temper over trifles. The Tiger, without meaning to, throws on wood: his Wood feeds Fire. So in the pair it is useful in summer not to speed each other up with new plans but to hold the tempo back. A holiday by water, an early bedtime and a rule of "no serious conversations after ten in the evening" work better in June and July than any talisman.
The year is easier for the Tiger, but he has points of his own. The year's Fire drains the Wood's strength, so tiredness builds toward autumn, and August with its clash 寅申 lands exactly on that dip. If you plan a move, a major purchase or a job change, by the background of the signs it is easier to close them before May or move them to December, when the Water of the month 壬子 gives Wood its support back. November (辛亥) is mobile for the Snake by itself because of the clash 巳亥, so it is not worth loading it with a move as well. Exact dates, of course, are read from full charts.

8 What really decides compatibility
If the harm 寅巳 and the punishment 寅巳申 sound alarming, compare them with how a real assessment is built. First: the Day Master of each of the two. If the Tiger has 甲 and the Snake has 丁 or 丙, the pair gets a powerful Wood–Fire link in which the harm of branches decides little. Second: where exactly 寅 and 巳 stand. In the year pillars they hardly affect closeness. In the days and months they affect it noticeably. Third: the needed elements. If Fire is needed by the Tiger's chart, the Snake becomes not a rival but a remedy. Fourth: the relationship stars. Fifth: the Luck Pillars 大運.
We went through all of this in the guide to the five layers of compatibility. That whole complex explains why two "Tiger and Snake" couples live completely differently, and why the words "harm" and "punishment" are not a reason to give up a union but a reason to look more closely at your own chart. 9 Frequently asked questions
Are the Tiger and the Snake incompatible?
No such conclusion can be drawn from one sign. Between 寅 and 巳 there is a harm 六害 and an incomplete punishment 寅巳申, but these are wearing-away rather than destroying links, and the elements are friendly: Wood gives birth to Fire. Everything depends on the other parts of the chart.
What does "punishment of relying on power" mean?
The name of the triple 寅巳申 applies in full to charts in which all three branches are present. For a pair of two signs it is a potential that comes alive if the Monkey 申 appears in the chart or in the year.
How does the Goat year affect the Snake and the Tiger?
For the Tiger the year is neutral. The Snake gets an incomplete seasonal combination 巳午未, which closes in the month 丙午 (6 June to 6 July 2027). This is general background, not a forecast of events.
How can conflicts in such a pair be avoided?
Remove the unsaid: a rule of answering within a day, a transparent budget, a weekly conversation. That removes the main practical problem of the harm 害.
Is it worth separating over a harm in the charts?
No. The classics require taking into account the place of the branches, the Day Masters and the needed elements. People decide about a union; the chart shows where caution is needed.
