Ask anyone who has read even a little about the Chinese zodiac which pairs "click on their own," and the Snake and the Rooster will come up almost at once. The reason is not a pretty legend. It is the arithmetic of the branches: in the trine 巳酉丑 (sì-yǒu-chǒu) three branches gather around the element of Metal, and our pair holds two of the three.

The phrase "click on their own" is easy to misread, though. A harmony of branches describes a shared direction and the ease with which two people switch on to the same task. It does not cancel the fact that the Snake's Fire melts and tempers the Rooster's Metal, and tempering is not always a pleasant process from the metal's point of view. In this article we look at how the pairing behaves in love, friendship and work, where its weak points are, and what the year 2027 changes.

One caveat that we repeat in every article about pairs: compatibility by birth-year sign is a surface layer. The sign describes only the year pillar. What really happens between two people shows up in two full charts, and at the end we list the checks that this requires.

1 What the classics say: the Three Harmony 巳酉丑

In the system of Earthly Branches the twelve animals are grouped into four Three Harmony combinations 三合 (sān hé), and each one "closes" around a single element. For Metal the three branches are 巳 (Snake), 酉 (Rooster) and 丑 (Ox). Each branch has its own role in the trine: 巳 is the "birth" of the element (長生, cháng shēng), 酉 is its bloom and peak (帝旺, dì wàng), and 丑 is the storehouse (墓, mù) where Metal is put away.

In this logic the Snake is the starter: Metal is only just being born in 巳, like a blank in the forge. The Rooster is the mature, polished form. So in a pair the Snake usually brings the idea, the impulse, the raw energy, and the Rooster turns it into a finished result. If nothing in either chart gets in the way, the two can divide the labor with almost no discussion.

BranchRole in the trine 巳酉丑What it gives the pair
巳 SnakeBirth of Metal (長生)Launch, concept, an instinct for the right moment
酉 RoosterPeak of Metal (帝旺)Finishing, quality standards, attention to detail
丑 OxStorehouse of Metal (墓)Absent from the pair, but it can arrive through the day, hour or a Luck Pillar

Our pair's trine is incomplete, because the Ox 丑 is missing. A half trine (半三合, bàn sān hé) that contains the central branch 酉 is considered workable, although weaker than a full one. If either partner has 丑 somewhere else in the chart, in the month, day or hour pillar, the union closes and the link becomes noticeably firmer. That is why one of the first questions in a real reading is whether either person has an Ox in the chart.

For a closer look at how trines work and how full ones differ from half ones, see the article on the Three Harmony combinations 三合.

2 Fire and Metal: who melts whom

Now the elements. The Snake is Fire (the main hidden stem of 巳 is 丙, Yang Fire) and the Rooster is pure Metal (酉 hides only 辛, Yin Metal). In the controlling cycle Fire melts Metal. On paper that is a conflict; in practice it is the classic blacksmith pairing. Without fire, metal stays ore, and without metal, fire has nothing to work on.

Among the hidden stems of 巳 there is also 庚 (Yang Metal), the Snake's own reserve of metal. That is why the Snake understands the Rooster's language better than the label "Fire" would suggest. And 丙 and 辛 form a stem combination, 丙辛合 (bǐng-xīn hé), often described as a couple that is drawn toward each other. Transformation into Water rarely happens in practice, but the pull is a real motif.

What does this mean at home? The Snake tends to "heat things up": hurrying, arguing, proposing improvements. The Rooster takes those improvements as criticism, especially when they pour onto something already checked and finished. It answers with precision and exact wording, and at some point the two discover that they are discussing a comma rather than the point. If you recognize the scene, it is not "bad compatibility." It is the mechanics of the pairing, and it can be tuned.

A practical adjustment. Agree on which areas the Rooster has the last word in (order, deadlines, the final check) and which belong to the Snake (choosing a direction, new ideas). Fire that has been given its own territory stops burning someone else's.

3 Love and marriage

In romance the Snake and the Rooster usually start with conversation. Both love beautiful things: the Snake for depth and mystery, the Rooster for form, style and presentation. The attraction often begins with shared taste in objects, places, a way of speaking. For a while the couple looks flawless, and that is exactly the period in which it is easy to mistake the backdrop for a guarantee.

Friction appears in daily life. The Snake is secretive: it can think something over for a long time and announce the result rather than the doubts. The Rooster is the opposite and likes to talk things through and check them. It needs clarity: who, when, why. To the Snake those questions feel like an interrogation; to the Rooster the Snake's silence feels like coldness. Couples with this dynamic are helped by simple agreements such as "I need two days to think, then I will answer." The Snake gets peace, and the Rooster knows what to expect.

The marriages that last longest are those in which each partner has an area of their own to be respected in. The Snake values the Rooster's reliability and the ability to finish things; the Rooster values the Snake's depth and strategic sense. If the Rooster starts to feel like the support staff for someone else's schemes, or the Snake feels permanently audited, the balance breaks.

Remember too that real marital ties in BaZi are read from the day branch, the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng). A Snake by birth year may have any branch at all on the day pillar, from 子 to 午, and it is the day branch, not the year branch, that shapes the picture of the marriage. More on that in the article on marriage in BaZi.

4 Friendship and everyday contact

As friends these two are usually comfortable together. There is no harsh rivalry over leadership: the Snake freely sets the direction, and the Rooster gladly takes over the organizing. A shared hobby project works well, whether a trip, a renovation, an event or a course of study. Each of them naturally finds a role in it.

The weak spot of the friendship is mutual demandingness. The Snake may store up displeasure for a long time and deliver it in a single remark, while the Rooster hands out small, regular "recommendations." Two different manners of criticism collide, and one of them is offended before the other realizes that anything hurtful was said. A direct question helps: "Is this remark about the task, or do you just not like it?"

Friends in this pair share one more trait: they feel good together in silence. The Snake is not afraid of pauses, and the Rooster does not insist on filling them when the person next to it understands. BaZi ties this comfort to the common "metal" background of the trine.

5 Work and business

In a business partnership the 巳酉 link gives one of the most practical divisions of labor. The Snake handles strategy, negotiation and finding the niche; the Rooster handles bookkeeping, quality control and procedures. In an agency, a studio or a consultancy such a pair looks almost ideal: vision plus diligence.

TaskWho leadsWhat to watch
Choosing a directionSnakeThe Rooster asks about the numbers before the decision, not after
Accounting and contractsRoosterThe Snake does not reopen what has been agreed "because of a mood"
Negotiating with clientsSnakeThe Rooster checks the wording before it is sent
Keeping deadlinesRoosterThe Snake does not read control as distrust

The business risk is this: the Snake may change decisions on the fly if it senses a more interesting option, and the Rooster may get stuck in polishing and miss the moment. The habit of writing a decision down and reviewing it only on pre-agreed days rescues the situation. If the matter is serious, look at our material on business compatibility, which shows which layers of the chart matter most when two people work together.

6 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

Notice that in all these scenes the culprit is not a "bad sign" but a mismatch of manners. Manners can be tuned as long as the branches do not obstruct each other, and for this pair they do not.

7 The Snake and Rooster pair in 2027

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat; it begins around 4 February 2027, at the moment of 立春 (lì chūn, the Beginning of Spring). The year branch 未 is the Tai Sui 太歲, and every sign looks at it as a point of reference.

If you would like to understand each sign's general character first, start with the materials on the Snake year and the Rooster year. For the Snake 巳, the branch 未 belongs to the seasonal Directional Combination 巳午未 (三會, sān huì), the "summer" group. The full trine is not assembled for the Snake unless 午, the Horse, is present in the person's chart. Even so, two of the three branches are already there, and the "fiery" backdrop of the year is noticeably stronger for the Snake. In real life it can feel like a surge of energy, a wish to act, more ideas and more impatience.

For the Rooster 酉 there is no direct link with 未: no clash, no combination, no harm. A light "feed" comes from the fact that the Earth of 未 (its hidden main stem is 己) generates Metal. At the same time the year stem 丁 is Fire, and Yin Fire controls Yin Metal 辛, so the backdrop is not only gentle but slightly "hot." The result for the Rooster is a neutral, workmanlike year with no obvious jolts.

For the pair this means that the Snake has more fuel in 2027 and the Rooster meets neither special obstacles nor special acceleration. Expect the Snake to propose changes more often and the Rooster to accept or consider them more calmly. Be more attentive during the 巳 month, from 6 May to 5 June 2027 (乙巳), when the Snake receives another dose of seasonal fire, and during the 酉 month, from 8 September to 7 October (己酉), when the familiar core of the pair runs at full strength. The dates are approximate, give or take a day, and without your chart they are a frame, not a forecast of events.

8 Why the year sign is only the top layer

Everything described above concerns the branches of the year pillars. That is the outer layer of a chart, the way other people see a person. It matters as a general backdrop but does not decide the fate of a couple. A full chart gives each person four pillars, eight characters and a web of links among them.

A genuine assessment of a relationship runs through five layers.

  1. Day Masters 日主. The elements of the people, not of the signs. A Snake whose Day Master is 壬 (Yang Water) and a Snake whose Day Master is 丙 (Yang Fire) are two different people.
  2. Day branches, the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮. This is where a couple meets face to face: combination, clash, punishment, harm.
  3. Useful Gods 用神. Whether each partner supplies the other with the element needed. For a Snake with excess Fire and a Rooster with strong Metal, the usefulness may coincide or may not.
  4. Relationship stars. Peach Blossom 桃花 and the stars of marriage and solitude, and where they sit.
  5. Luck Pillars 大運. Whether the next ten years match in tone for the two: both rising, or one climbing while the other stands still.

Instead of a compatibility percentage you get a map of the connection: where the supports are, where the vulnerable spots are, what deserves attention. The method is described in detail in the article on BaZi compatibility, and you can build your own chart for free.

An example. Two Rooster women were born in different years: 1981 (辛酉) and 1993 (癸酉). In the first, the year stem 辛 is of the same kind as the branch, so the Metal is "doubled." In the second, 癸 (Water) stands over 酉 and softens that Metal. Next to a Snake they have a different tone of communication, even though the sign is the same.

9 Frequently asked questions

Are the Snake and the Rooster a good pair?

By the branches it is one of the favorable ones: 巳 and 酉 form the half Three Harmony 巳酉丑 (Metal). But that is a tendency toward shared effort and mutual understanding, not a guarantee. What comes of it for two specific people shows only in their two full charts.

Who is in charge in a Snake and Rooster couple?

By the elements, the Snake: the Fire of 巳 controls the Metal of 酉. In practice the Snake more often sets the direction while the Rooster finishes and polishes. If the Rooster feels that it is only being "corrected," tension grows, and then it needs clear zones in which it decides.

How is 2027 different for this pair?

For the Snake, 2027 (丁未) brings half of the seasonal combination 巳午未: 未 joins its 巳. The Rooster has no direct link with 未, so its backdrop is neutral. The difference in the "temperature" of the year may be felt, but it does not predict events.

Can a Snake and Rooster couple break up?

Any couple can, and any couple can hold together. A trine of branches is a favorable backdrop and does not cancel clashes within the charts themselves, for example if the partners have a 沖 or 刑 in their other pillars.

What matters more, the year sign or the Day Master?

For judging a relationship the Day Master 日主 and the day branch weigh more than the year sign. The sign is the year pillar, the outermost layer of the chart. Two Roosters with different Day Masters can be completely unlike each other.
