If you lay the year out by seasons, summer is taken by three branches in a row: 巳 (Snake), 午 (Horse) and 未 (Goat). The Snake opens the season in early May, the Horse stands right in the middle, in June, and the Goat closes the summer in July. The Snake and the Horse are the first two steps of this staircase. In the classics the three summer branches together are called 三會 (sān huì, the "triple meeting," a Directional Combination) and give pure Fire.

From this comes the first conclusion about the pair: they share a "climate." Both signs live in Fire, both feel the temperature of a relationship on their skin, and both react fast. In everything else they differ. The Snake's fire is shrewd and concentrated; the Horse's is open, like a bonfire in a clearing. Let us look at how they get along and where they get burned.

1 Two fire branches, and how they differ

The hidden stems 藏干 (cáng gān) of the two branches are not the same.

BranchHidden stemsThe Fire here
巳 Snake丙 Yang Fire, 戊 Yang Earth, 庚 Yang MetalFire on the rise, mixed with Earth and Metal
午 Horse丁 Yin Fire, 己 Yin EarthFire at its peak, pure and softly glowing

Note that the Horse is called the most "fiery" branch, yet its hidden stem is Yin 丁, a candle or lamp rather than the sun. It is a strong fire that does not blind: it warms and attracts. The Snake, by contrast, has 丙 (Yang Fire) as its main stem, and Metal 庚 hides inside it, which the Horse lacks. Hence a practical difference: the Snake can be sharp and exact, the Horse generous and carried away. One cuts, the other warms.

2 The character of the pairing

Together, these two make the impression of a very alive, noticeable couple. The Horse brings energy, movement and openness; the Snake brings meaning and the ability to choose. The Horse says "let's go," the Snake asks "where, and what for?" In the healthy version it is quick and free of foolishness. In the unhealthy one, the Horse feels supervised and the Snake feels overloaded with someone else's enthusiasm.

By temperament the pair is alike: neither likes sluggishness, boredom or routine without meaning. When they quarrel, it is emotional, without long silent wars: the Horse blows up and cools down, while the Snake answers with an exact remark that later has to be apologised for. A fire in which nobody yields burns out quickly. This pair needs water in the most literal sense: walks by a river, a holiday by the sea, conversations in the evening rather than on the run.

3 Love and marriage

In romance, the attraction between these signs is strong and quick. The Horse draws with openness and warmth, the Snake with depth and mystery. They read each other's mood well and know how to have fun, travel and start something new. The passion here is not invented: Fire on Fire really burns.

The pitfalls are standard for hot pairs. The first is jealousy: the Horse's is loud, the Snake's is quiet and clinging, and together they can stage a show out of nothing. The second is money: both love beautiful things and experiences, and Earth and Metal (savings and discipline, that is) may run short in such a pair. The third is fatigue: too much shared Fire leads, within a few years, to both wanting quiet while neither knows how to arrange it.

If 巳 and 午 sit in the day pillars (the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮, fūqī gōng), this story is daily. The rule then is that the home needs cooling elements: water, dark tones, quiet evenings. There is no superstition here, just the ordinary logic of elemental balance: when there is too much Fire nearby, the home needs something that cools it.

4 Friendship and work

The Snake and the Horse become friends easily: curiosity, mobility and a love of bright events unite them. The Horse pulls the Snake out of its shell, and the Snake teaches the Horse to choose where to spend its strength. A Horse friend rarely holds a grudge, and the Snake knows how to value that.

In business the pair is productive wherever speed and precision are needed together: sales with serious analytics, event organising, media, trade, teaching, consulting. The division of roles comes naturally: the Horse is the face, the negotiator, the rhythm; the Snake is strategy, finance and checking details. The danger is a lack of support. Two fire branches without Earth and Metal in their charts can generate ideas but not carry them through to consolidation: contracts, bookkeeping, reserves. Put those in the written agreements and do not leave them "for later."

5 Typical conflicts and how to ease them

6 The pair in 2027, the year of the Goat

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, and it begins with 立春 (lì chūn, the Start of Spring), around 4 February 2027. It is unusual for both branches: the summer triple 巳午未 gets its missing link. In your pair you already hold 巳 and 午, and the Goat arrives as the year branch. In 2027 the three summer branches stand side by side, though the third one is not yours; it comes from outside.

For each of the two it looks different. The Snake enters 2027 with two thirds of the combination: 巳 and 未 are in place, waiting for 午. The Horse receives two links with the Goat at once: the Six Harmony 午未合 (wǔ-wèi hé) and a part in the 三會. For the Horse, the Goat is a warm ally, and this year is usually described as one of support and closeness. But when a Snake is also in the pair, both links intertwine and there is a great deal of Fire.

The months show where the peak is. The fifth month, 丙午 (about 6 June to 6 July), brings a second Horse: for the Horse in the chart this is the self-punishment 午午 (自刑, zì xíng), and for the Snake it is the closing of the Directional Combination. The sixth month, 丁未 (about 7 July to 7 August), adds the Goat again. This is the hottest window of the year: decisions, arguments, departures and romances are best considered without hurry. February sounds quite different: in 壬寅 (about 4 February to 5 March) the Tiger forms half of the 寅午戌 combination with the Horse, and with the Snake a harm 寅巳害 and two of the three branches of the punishment 寅巳申 (incomplete without the Monkey); the pair enters the year at different temperatures. In 壬子 (about 7 December 2027 to 5 January 2028) 子 clashes with the Horse (子午冲), and in 辛亥 (about 7 November to 6 December) the Pig clashes with the Snake (巳亥冲). Month boundaries are approximate, give or take a day, and all of this is a general backdrop and not a promise of events.

In the second half of the year the pair diverges. In 戊申 (about 8 August to 7 September) the Monkey touches the Snake with three links at once: the combination 巳申合, the destruction 巳申破 and two of the three branches in the punishment 寅巳申. For the Snake this is a month when business agreements are easily made and just as easily fray, so check the wording twice. The Horse is classically unconnected to the Monkey, so August passes more evenly for it. In 庚戌 (about 8 October to 6 November) it is the Horse that receives support: 午戌 gives two of the three branches in the Fire Three Harmony 寅午戌, while the Snake and the Dog are not directly linked. So in autumn the pair has different "good" months, which is convenient: whoever is steadier can take on more of the shared tasks.

What to do in practice: in June and July, look after water and cooling in the widest sense. Rest by water, a calm rhythm, fewer public conflicts. Big spending and big promises are better made earlier or later than these two months.

7 Why the year sign is only the top layer

The Snake and the Horse by year are two branches out of eight, and the conclusion "you share Fire" does not yet mean "you suit each other" or "you will burn out." Other layers are needed for that. The Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ) of each person determines how they relate to Fire at all. For someone with a 壬 (Water) Day Master, such a partner can be both dangerous and necessary (Fire is Wealth for Water); for a bearer of 丙 or 丁 it is the native element. For a person with weak Wood and a cold chart, a shared summer pair is a gift, while for someone born in a hot month who is already "overheated," it can become an excess.

So the real check goes through five layers: the Day Masters, the day branches (the Spouse Palaces), elemental balance, the relationship stars and the alignment of the Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). We described the method in the compatibility guide; each sign on its own is covered in the articles on the Year of the Snake and the Year of the Horse. There is no single percentage here, as there are no "ideal" signs, only a description of supports and thin spots.

Snake and Horse by birth year

The Snake and the Horse follow each other in the cycle. If the Snake is older, the age gap is 1, 13 or 25 years; if the Horse is older, 11 or 23 years. The relationship of the year stems depends on that gap. The most common case is adjacent years, with the Snake a year older; the stems are adjacent too:

SnakeHorseYear stems
1965 乙巳1966 丙午Yin Wood → Yang Fire: feeding
1977 丁巳1978 戊午Yin Fire → Yang Earth: feeding
1989 己巳1990 庚午Yin Earth → Yang Metal: feeding
2001 辛巳2002 壬午Yin Metal → Yang Water: feeding
2013 癸巳2014 甲午Yin Water → Yang Wood: feeding

With a gap of exactly one year, the Snake's stem always produces the Horse's stem. For other gaps this rule does not hold. With the Snake 13 years older, the Snake's stem controls the Horse's (1965 乙巳 and 1978 戊午: Wood against Earth). With the Snake 25 years older, the stems form a combination (1965 乙巳 and 1990 庚午: 乙庚合). With the Horse 11 years older, the stems share an element (1966 丙午 and 1977 丁巳, both Fire). With the Horse 23 years older, the Horse's stem produces the Snake's (1966 丙午 and 1989 己巳: Fire feeds Earth). The year stem is a layer of ancestors and family background; it guarantees no happiness and promises no trouble. Years are counted from 立春 (around 4 February): people born in January and early February belong to the previous year.

How to make use of the shared Fire

A pair of two summer branches has a large resource if handled correctly. In BaZi, Fire is linked with light, expressiveness, visibility and the ability to ignite others. Such people feel at home in public work, in creative fields, in professions where you have to lead others. A joint project with an open "shop window" is natural for them: a blog, a studio, a school, events, a small business with a personal brand.

But Fire needs fuel and a channel. The fuel is Wood: study, reading, new acquaintances, travel, anything that feeds ideas. The channel is Earth and Metal: a schedule, bookkeeping, agreements, clear boundaries. If you live together, try to turn these words into household rules. For example, look at the money together once a week, discuss plans three months ahead once a month, and go away once a quarter to somewhere with neither work nor relatives.

And finally, about water. It is needed not only in the household. It is also conversation without hurry, the habit of listening, pauses between remarks. For this reason a partner, friend or mentor with a "watery" character often turns out to be the most valuable person for such a pair: beside them, Fire stops scorching.

A tip for each

Horse: do not take the Snake's caution for distrust, and do not press for an answer "right here, right now." Give it time, and the answer will be more accurate than your first reaction. Snake: do not cut down with a witty remark what the Horse says in the heat of emotion. Those hot words usually mean nothing, and within an hour she or he will have forgotten them. Both: agree on a "cool-down zone," a small ritual after a quarrel, whether tea, a walk or five minutes of silence. It works better than any long clarification, because Fire goes out without fuel and not through discussion.

8 Frequently asked questions

What is 三會 巳午未 and how does it differ from 三合?

The Directional Combination 三會 gathers three neighbouring branches of one season and in most schools is regarded as the strongest link between branches: it feeds a single element, here Fire. The Three Harmony 三合 joins three branches four steps apart: the birth, peak and storehouse of one element. It is weaker than the Directional Combination.

Is it true that Snake and Horse are a "fire" pair?

By branches, yes: both belong to Fire. But the real picture depends on whether your charts need Fire. For one person it is a source of strength, for another overheating.

What does 2027 change for this pair?

The year branch 未 completes the Directional Combination 巳午未 together with your 巳 and 午. For the Horse, the Six Harmony 午未合 is added. The peak of Fire falls on the months 丙午 and 丁未, roughly 6 June to 7 August.

Does this pair have weak spots?

Jealousy, spending on experiences, and fatigue from a shared rhythm. Water in the household, a clear budget and a habit of planning pauses all help.

Can I trust an assessment based on signs alone?

As a first impression, yes. For decisions about marriage, business or a move you need the full charts of both partners.
