In the Chinese classics the Rabbit and the Rooster have a reputation as a loud pair. Not necessarily an unhappy one: a loud one. They fall in love quickly, notice faults quickly, argue quickly and make up quickly, if both know when to stop. The reason lies in the geometry of the circle of earthly branches: 卯 (mǎo) and 酉 (yǒu) stand exactly opposite each other, like east and west on a compass.
The classical term for such a link is 六冲 (liù chōng, the "six clashes"). We will go through what it means for a pair at the level of birth-year signs, in love, friendship and work, and how to live with it so that the energy of opposition serves rather than destroys. Everything said here concerns the annual branch only. A living couple is defined by the whole chart, and at the end we show what else has to be checked.
1 The East-West axis: the geometry of conflict
The earthly branches are arranged in a circle. 卯 stands in the east, in the middle of spring, and carries the element of Wood. 酉 stands in the west, in the middle of autumn, and carries the element of Metal. These are two "cardinal" directions, among the strongest points of the circle. Together with 子 (north) and 午 (south) they make up the four Peach Blossom branches, 四桃花 (sì táo huā), which govern charm and attraction.
Such symmetry creates a magnet effect: opposite points attract and repel at the same time. Rabbits and Roosters are often drawn to each other more strongly than to "neutral" signs. This explains the eternal plot: "we suit each other so well, and we fight so often."
If you look at the elements, the picture adds tension. In the controlling cycle of the five elements, Metal cuts Wood (金克木, jīn kè mù). In this pair the Rooster ends up as the "knife" and the Rabbit as the "branch." But a breakdown by elements is simpler than real life: stems are hidden inside the branches, and their interaction adds nuance.
2 What is inside: 乙 against 辛
The branch 卯 holds one hidden stem, 乙 (yǐ), Yin Wood, the vine. The branch 酉 also holds a single stem, 辛 (xīn), Yin Metal: jeweller's metal, a gemstone, a thin knife. The pair 乙辛 is also called a clash of stems in the classics (乙辛冲). In other words, the conflict runs on two levels at once: branches and stems. Both are "pure," undiluted. There is no Earth and no Water that could soften it. That is why the clash of these two signs is called "clean."
That is not only bad. "Cleanness" makes the link transparent: what is on the mind is on the tongue. You quickly understand what is not working for your partner, and you quickly receive an answer. In a Rabbit + Rooster pair there is no long "fog" in which many other couples get lost.
| Layer | What the pair 卯 + 酉 has | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Branches | 六冲 卯酉 | Head-on collision, quick emotions, vivid scenes |
| Stems | 乙 against 辛 (乙辛冲) | Soft Wood and sharp Metal: the Rabbit's vulnerability to the Rooster's abruptness |
| Elements | Metal (酉) controls Wood (卯) | The Rooster "shapes" the Rabbit; too strong a shape turns into pressure |
| Peach Blossom | Both branches belong to 子午卯酉 | Attraction, flirting, jealousy |
| Rhythm | Spring and autumn | Growth versus harvest: different assessments of what matters now |
3 Love: passion with an audit
In love the Rabbit and the Rooster resemble a couple in which one is full of romance and the other full of requirements. The Rabbit dreams of harmony, beauty, gentle communication. The Rooster values order, precision, kept promises. It notices being five minutes late, clothes folded wrongly, an unwashed cup. The Rabbit takes each remark as personal rejection, although the Rooster, as a rule, is just "putting things in order."
The paradox of this pair: the Rooster's faults are a mirror of the Rabbit's faults, and the other way round. The Rabbit avoids conflict, so problems pile up. The Rooster avoids nothing, so problems fly out at once, and head-on. If both admit that each has their own way, conflicts become part of a ritual. If not, mutual "treatment" begins: the Rooster tries to teach the Rabbit directness, the Rabbit teaches the Rooster gentleness, and both are dissatisfied.
The classical recommendation for pairs with a clash in their annual branches is not to settle into the relationship "in a single space" without personal boundaries. Each should have their own territory, their own schedule, their own time. This is not about distrust but about prevention: a clash is better kept apart than needlessly knocked together.
A clash of signs is not a sentence for a couple
A Couple Compatibility Reading looks at both charts in full: Spouse Palaces, Day Masters and stem combinations. It will show whether your 沖 is softened by other links.

Friends from this pair are those who value the other highly for what they do not find in themselves. The Rabbit admires the Rooster's businesslike nature, the Rooster admires the Rabbit's ability to create an atmosphere. At a distance this works wonderfully. Up close, in shared daily life or daily contact, small frictions begin. So these friendships often have one feature: they live best in the format "met once a week, discussed everything, went our ways."
In business the same contrast turns from a minus into a plus. The Rabbit and the Rooster can be a strong duo if the roles in the project are clearly separated. The Rooster is responsible for accuracy, processes, control. The Rabbit is responsible for communication, diplomacy, the aesthetics of the product. The danger is in violated boundaries: when the Rooster climbs into "diplomacy" and the Rabbit into "processes," arguments start in which each is right from their own bell tower.
Money and shares are better fixed in advance and in writing. For the Rooster this is natural; the Rabbit may consider formalities superfluous. But formalities are exactly what protects such a pair from sorting out the relationship after the first conflict. For launching a joint business it also makes sense to look at the charts of both and choose a date (see business opening date).
5 Family and home: two systems of order
When a Rabbit and a Rooster live under one roof, it quickly becomes clear that each has their own image of order. For the Rooster, order means every thing lies in its place and everything is done on time. For the Rabbit, order is an atmosphere: soft light, clean air, absence of tension. The Rooster looks at the sink, the Rabbit looks at the mood. Both are right in their own way, but they have no words to talk to each other about it.
A working solution is to divide the house into zones. The kitchen and the schedule of chores are the Rooster's territory; the bedroom, the living room and the decor are the Rabbit's. In their own zone each sets the rules, and in the other's the "guest rule" applies: you may suggest but not demand. This removes a host of small arguments and gives both a sense of being the master.
With children the picture depends on roles. A Rooster parent tends toward a strict regime, a Rabbit parent toward gentle concessions, and the child quickly learns to play on this difference. Agree in advance on three or four unchanging rules, and leave the rest to whoever is with the child at the moment. A united front on matters of principle matters more than a united style.
6 Weddings and dates: what a pair with a clash should consider
A topic that often comes up for couples with an annual clash: "can we marry?" The answer in the spirit of the classics: marriage is decided not by birth-year signs but by the Spouse Palaces and the overall dynamics of the charts. If the day branches of both form a combination or are at least neutral, the annual clash does not interfere. If there is a clash there too, it is a reason for a calm conversation and, possibly, for choosing a way of living that gives each more personal space.
As for the date of the ceremony, a sensible general principle is to choose it not at random but taking into account the personal branches of the bride and groom, trying not to reinforce the clashes already present in their charts. This is done from the full data of both and remains just one factor: a date does not change characters and guarantees nothing; it only removes an obviously unfavourable backdrop. Which days and months are worth avoiding is visible only from the specific charts, so there is no universal list of "forbidden dates" for all Rabbit + Rooster pairs. If you want to look at it in detail, there is a separate wedding date selection.
7 A protocol for clashes: how to quarrel safely
This is the practical part. If you are a Rabbit and a Rooster, you have a high probability of sharp moments. To keep them from destroying the relationship, a simple order will help.
- Stop. As soon as you hear the tone rising, both take a twenty-minute pause. Do not leave slamming the door; simply say "I need to cool down, let's come back in twenty minutes."
- Facts. On returning, each speaks only of what they saw and heard, without judgement: "you came at eleven, although you promised nine."
- Feeling. Then one sentence about the feeling: "I was anxious." Not an accusation but information.
- Request. One concrete change you want: "let me know if you are running late."
- Return to closeness. A hug, tea, a walk. A clash is healed not only with words.
The protocol looks simple, but in pairs with a 沖 it is surprisingly effective. It gives the Rabbit time for a soft reaction and the Rooster a structure for directness. When both sides feel that their format is respected, the conflict loses its edge.
One more thing to keep in mind: the classics say a 沖 can also be "opening." It loosens frozen situations: it forces people to change habits, to move, to rethink the relationship. Many pairs with a 沖 by signs live together for years precisely because they are never bored. They do not fall asleep in comfort but keep proving to each other why they stayed.
But this variant is possible only where both are ready to grow. If one partner tends toward calm and stability while the other wants movement, the 沖 will press on that partner like pressure in a closed vessel. Again: full charts are needed to understand who in your pair this suits.
8 2027: two monthly windows against the backdrop of a calm year
The year 丁未, the Fire Goat, begins at Lì Chūn (立春) around 4 February 2027. For the Rooster there is no direct link with the annual branch 未; for the Rabbit it is half of the Three Harmony 亥卯未. The general backdrop for the pair is neutral and calm: the annual branch does not strengthen your clash.
The calendar of months, however, switches your 沖 on twice. The month 癸卯 (roughly 6 March to 4 April) brings the branch 卯 into the Rooster's chart: the clash with 酉 switches on from its side. The month 己酉 (roughly 8 September to 7 October) brings 酉 to the Rabbit: the clash switches on from the other side. In these weeks both signs feel somewhat wound up: they react more sharply and draw conclusions faster. The good news is that these are time-limited periods, and they can be lived through consciously.
There are also softening months. 甲辰 (roughly 5 April to 5 May) brings the Rooster a Six Harmony 辰酉, although for the Rabbit 辰 harms 卯 (害). 庚戌 (roughly 8 October to 6 November) gives the Rabbit a Six Harmony 卯戌 and the Rooster a harm 酉戌. You see: in every month the signs have their own weather, and it does not coincide. We have discussed the yearly forecasts for each sign in the articles on the Rabbit and on the Rooster.
9 The birth-year sign is not the whole pair
The clash 卯酉 lives in the pair only at the level of annual branches. In the full charts there are three other branches for each, four heavenly stems and a Day Master. If both of you have branches in the day pillars that form a Six Harmony, or the Day Masters feed each other, the annual 沖 becomes a backdrop. If palace conflicts are added to the annual clash, the pair needs particular attention.
BaZi practitioners make five checks: the Day Masters, the Spouse Palaces, elemental balance and Useful Gods, relationship stars, and the synchronicity of Luck Pillars. The result is not "compatibility 43%" but a map of the pair: where it leans, where it is thin, which years are better for decisions. Learn more about the method in the step-by-step guide, about how clashes work in the article on 沖, and about what to do if the relationship has run into a crisis in the material on crises and divorce.

Can the Rabbit and the Rooster not be together at all?
They can. A clash 沖 describes the style of a relationship, not a prohibition. Such pairs live more vividly and quarrel louder, and they need maturity and the skill of taking pauses. If the charts contain softening factors (combinations 合, shared useful elements), the clash of birth-year signs is hardly felt.
How does 沖 differ from 害 and 破?
沖 (chōng) is a direct head-on blow of opposite branches: loud and noticeable. 害 (hài) is a quiet harm, an undermining of trust. 破 (pò) is a destruction of agreements. The Rabbit and the Rooster are characterised by the first picture: a sharp reaction, quick emotions, not always long grudges.
Why are signs that clash so drawn to each other?
Both branches, 卯 and 酉, belong to the four Peach Blossoms 四桃花 (子午卯酉). These are signs of charm and attraction, and between opposite points of the axis a tension arises that can be mistaken for love at first sight. The attraction is real; it simply comes with friction.
What changes for the pair in 2027?
The year 丁未 is not directly linked to the Rooster, and for the Rabbit it gives the half-triad 亥卯未. The general backdrop is calm, but the monthly windows 癸卯 and 己酉 switch on the clash 卯酉 from both sides. In those weeks it is useful to be more careful with important conversations.
Can a wedding date be chosen to soften the clash?
A date does not cancel the chart, but it is chosen with the personal branches of the bride and groom in mind. Classical rules avoid days that reinforce clashes. Such a selection gives no 100% guarantee; it only removes obviously unsuitable options.
