Some pairs get a lot of attention in the classics: Rat and Horse, Ox and Goat, Tiger and Monkey. Others get a single line in the textbooks: "no links." The Rabbit and the Monkey are exactly that case. No Three Harmony, no clash, no quiet harm. That does not mean the relationship is easy or hard. It means there is no ready-made script, and the couple writes its own.

We will look at what remains when the branches are silent: the elements, the hidden stems, the characters. We consider only birth-year signs, which means one branch out of the four pillars of each person. That is a thin layer, and at the end we explain why a real answer needs the full charts.

1 What "no links" means, and why it is not emptiness

BaZi knows six types of links between branches: Six Harmony 六合, Three Harmony 三合, clash 沖, punishment 刑, harm 害 and destruction 破. For the pair 卯 + 申 there is not one of them. For comparison: the Rabbit and the Dog are linked by a Six Harmony, the Rabbit and the Rooster by a clash, the Rabbit and the Horse by a destruction. Here there is silence.

Silence at this level is a rather comfortable position. Pairs with a pronounced link receive a "set tone": a harmony pulls toward agreement, a clash toward sparks. Neutral pairs build their tone out of small things: habits, the rhythm of life, character. That is why there are so many stories around the Rabbit and the Monkey, from "the best couple in the world" to "could not stay in one room." It means everything is decided by the other layers.

2 Two constructions: a vine and a wise axe

卯 (mǎo) holds a single stem, 乙 (yǐ), Yin Wood: the vine, the grass, the flower. The Rabbit is flexible, avoids direct collisions and reaches for beauty and safety. More about it in the article on the Year of the Rabbit.

申 (shēn) is the branch of early autumn, Metal at its birth. It holds three hidden stems: 庚 (gēng, Yang Metal, a blade, an axe), 壬 (rén, Yang Water, a river) and 戊 (wù, Yang Earth, a mountain). The Monkey is many-sided: sharp, fast steel, but with moving Water inside and stable Earth at the base. So its behaviour is more complex than "cunning and nimble." You will find more in the article on the Year of the Monkey and in the overview of hidden stems.

Now put them together. In the controlling cycle of the five elements, Metal cuts Wood (金克木, jīn kè mù). In everyday imagery: an axe and a vine. At first glance the picture looks alarming: the Rabbit risks being "pruned" by someone more decisive and quicker. But look at the hidden stems and you find that the axe 庚 and the vine 乙 form the combination 乙庚合 (yǐ-gēng hé), the classical "union of soft and hard." The vine winds around the handle rather than retreating. This does not replace a union of branches, but it shows that the pull between them is not accidental.

3 Love and marriage: who impresses whom

The beginning of a relationship between a Rabbit and a Monkey often looks like admiration on both sides. The Rabbit values resourcefulness, wit, the ability to solve in five minutes what it has been pondering for a week. The Monkey notices a rare quality in the Rabbit: the ability to be close without imposing. Two people who find it easy to talk are a rarity.

Difficulties arise at the transition from lightness to responsibility. The Monkey does not like being tied to a plan, and the Rabbit needs predictability. The first year is usually fun; in the second the Rabbit begins to ask "so what's next?", and at that moment the Monkey either picks up the question or escapes into a joke. If it escapes into a joke, the Rabbit feels a lack of support, withdraws and convinces itself that it "asked for too much."

A simple rule helps the pair: serious topics are discussed in the morning, not in the evening after work. At that hour the Rabbit is less anxious and the Monkey less irritable, and the conversation more often ends in a decision than in a barb.

4 Friendship: the easiest format

In friendship the neutrality of the branches turns into a merit. There are no obligations that would make the pair clumsy, and no pressure from shared goals. The Monkey pulls the Rabbit into trips and new company; the Rabbit brings the friend back to the people the friend has forgotten. Friends from this pair usually keep in touch for years, even if they do not meet often.

The only trap is jokes. The Monkey is used to joking sharply, and the Rabbit is more sensitive than it shows. If after a meeting it silently leaves and replies to messages in single syllables, the joke has landed in the wrong place. The best remedy is to ask directly, without making an event of it.

5 Work: strong roles and an uneasy distribution of credit

At work the Rabbit + Monkey pair is often effective. The Monkey quickly finds a solution, the Rabbit brings it to a presentable state: formats it, coordinates it, softens sharp corners in correspondence with a client. The classic scheme is "the ideas person and the editor."

The weak spot is the distribution of credit. The Monkey sees its contribution in the idea, the Rabbit in the execution, and each considers its part undervalued. Agree in advance on the criteria by which a contribution is judged, and review the agreement once a quarter. For opening a joint business, practitioners also look at the charts of both and choose a date by classical rules (more in the article on choosing a date for a business).

6 Five typical arguments and what to do about them

1. "You are too blunt"

The Monkey speaks directly, and for the Rabbit it sounds like a verdict. Agree on a format: first the fact, then a proposal. "The contract isn't finalised, let's sign tomorrow" instead of "you've dragged it out again."

2. "You always doubt"

The Rabbit weighs, and the Monkey counts that as lost time. Give the Rabbit a "decision window": until evening, until tomorrow, and no pressure within that term.

3. Different rhythm

The Monkey lives intensely and multitasks; the Rabbit prefers pauses. Plan days on the principle of "active day, quiet day" and do not demand someone else's rhythm from your partner.

4. Over-polishing

The Monkey wants to optimise the Rabbit's life: schedule, habits, finances. If this happens without being asked, it becomes pressure. A helpful phrase: "I'm not asking for advice, I'm asking you to listen."

5. Jealousy without a cause

The Monkey is sociable, the Rabbit is sensitive. Talk about it at a calm moment, not after a party.

7 Home and money: how to share territory

The Monkey loves to experiment: new gadgets, a new route to work, a new system for tracking expenses. The Rabbit prefers what is tried and beautiful. In a shared home this turns into funny conflicts: your partner rearranged the kitchen "for efficiency" and you cannot find the sugar for three days. A simple division works here. One space, say the kitchen, is led by the Rabbit, and another, say a work corner or a storeroom, belongs to the Monkey. Experiments are allowed on your own territory; on someone else's you need consent.

With money the picture is also double. The Monkey tends to invest, try, change the instrument; the Rabbit saves and doubts. Instead of arguing about whose approach is correct, divide the common budget into three parts: obligatory expenses, savings and a "play fund" for each. In the play fund the Monkey can make as many mistakes as it likes, and the Rabbit can allow itself a beautiful thing without explanations.

A separate topic is how you quarrel. The Monkey talks fast and slips from the subject into a joke, the Rabbit goes silent and withdraws. The meeting of these two styles becomes a dead end: one jokes, the other is silent, and nobody says the main thing. Try introducing a "stop word," any phrase after which both sides go to different rooms for ten minutes and then return with one sentence: "here is what I need." It sounds naive, but for neutral pairs, where no tone is set in advance, such small rules play the part of a frame.

8 Two signs in 2027: months instead of a general backdrop

The year 2027 is 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, starting at Lì Chūn (立春) around 4 February 2027. For the Rabbit the year is favourable: 未 and 卯 form half of the Three Harmony 亥卯未. For the Monkey there is no direct link with 未, and this is the "quietest" year for its sign: fewer bright events, more normal working rhythm. So the general backdrop for the pair is rather even. The monthly layer is more interesting.

Month of 2027Dates (±1 day)What happens to the signs
壬寅4 February to 5 MarchThe branch 寅 clashes with 申 (寅申冲): a noisy window of change for the Monkey
甲辰5 April to 5 MayThe branch 辰 harms 卯 (卯辰害): the Rabbit needs care in matters of trust
乙巳6 May to 5 June巳 is tied to 申 in several layers (harmony, punishment, destruction): a mixed backdrop for the Monkey
戊申8 August to 7 SeptemberRepetition of the Monkey's branch: the time of its maximum activity
己酉8 September to 7 October酉 clashes with 卯 (卯酉冲): the Rabbit gets nervous, a pause is needed
辛亥7 November to 6 DecemberFor the Rabbit, 亥 + 卯 + 未 close the Wood Three Harmony; for the Monkey, 申亥 gives a light harm

In these months each person's own branches pick up "noise," and the pair may feel heightened irritability. This is normal dynamics, not a reason to reconsider the relationship. Plan your load accordingly: do not choose a month of clash for difficult family decisions, and do not leave your riskiest negotiations for an unlucky window.

Translated into everyday language, the table gives this picture. February with its 壬寅 shakes up the Monkey: it wants to change jobs, move, start something new, and the Rabbit partner does well not to hold it back by force but to help turn the impulse into a plan. April (甲辰) touches the Rabbit along the line of trust, 卯辰害. It is a month when it is easy to become jealous or to imagine too much, so conversations are better held directly, not by hints. September (己酉) is the most noticeable window: 卯酉冲 hits the Rabbit directly, it becomes prickly and touchy, and exactly the pause described above helps. November's 辛亥, on the other hand, completes the Wood Three Harmony 亥卯未 for the Rabbit: a good time for shared plans, purchases and trips, when one of you is rising and pulls the other along. The remaining months pass more evenly and need no special marks. For a personal picture of the year, look at the forecasts for the Rabbit and for the Monkey.

9 Neutral pairs: what full charts decide

For pairs that are neutral by signs, the full chart is especially important. It is where the links that are invisible in a single branch are found. After the signs, a BaZi practitioner looks further. The Day Masters 日主 (rì zhǔ) determine which of you is in essence Wood, Metal or any other element. The Spouse Palaces, that is the day branches, show how partners feel each other in daily life. The elemental balance in the charts tells whether you need your partner's element. Relationship stars and Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn) add colour and time.

A Rabbit whose Day Master is 辛 or 庚, and a Monkey whose Day Master is 乙 or 癸, can form a pair in which the "roles by signs" have swapped. That is why the conclusion "Metal controls Wood" works as a starting point but not as a verdict. You will find more about the method in the step-by-step guide, and about situations where a person is simply not yours in the article on how to tell that someone is not right for you.

10 Frequently asked questions

What does a "neutral pair" mean in BaZi?

It is a pair with no classical links between the earthly branches: no harmony 合, no clash 沖, no punishment 刑, harm 害 or destruction 破. The signs neither help nor hinder each other, so the elements and the other characters of the charts come to the front.

Metal controls Wood: does that mean the Monkey is always above the Rabbit?

No. Control in the five-element cycle describes a type of influence, not a hierarchy. The Monkey can "prune" what is excessive, and the Rabbit gets shape, like a bush after trimming. Trouble begins when pruning turns into pressure. In a real couple the roles depend on the Day Masters and on the strength of each element in the charts.

Is there anything that links 卯 and 申 despite the neutrality?

Yes, at the level of hidden stems. 卯 holds 乙, and 申 holds the main stem 庚. The pair 乙庚 forms a stem combination 天干合 (tiān gān hé), which the classics call a "union of soft and hard." It is not a Six Harmony 六合 of branches, and in calculations it is counted cautiously, but it suits the description of the pair's attraction.

Which month of 2027 is the most sensitive for this pair?

For the Monkey a tense window is often 壬寅 (roughly 4 February to 5 March): the branch 寅 clashes with 申. For the Rabbit it is 己酉 (roughly 8 September to 7 October): 酉 clashes with 卯. These months touch the signs personally, not the pair, but when the windows coincide they give a common "noisy" period.

Is such a pair suitable for business?

Often yes. The Rabbit handles negotiations and clients, the Monkey handles decisions and the technical side. You need to agree in advance on boundaries: who makes decisions and how contribution is assessed. Experience with charts shows that for business, practitioners additionally look at dates and shared useful elements.
