In the Chinese calendar the months are grouped into seasons, and each season has its own alliance of branches. They are called 三會 (sān huì), the Directional Combination, literally a "gathering of three". Winter consists of three consecutive branches: the Pig 亥 (start of winter), the Rat 子 (deep winter) and the Ox 丑 (end of winter). The three gather into one powerful block of Water, 亥子丑. A Directional Combination is considered stronger than a Three Harmony: it is as if it says "we are one season".

The Ox and the Pig occupy two of the three places. The Rat, the very middle of winter, is missing. The result is a pair that has a beginning and an end but no core, with a feeling of an unfinished composition. These two sense each other as people of one era, but do not always understand what to put in the space between them.

Next we look at what really stands behind this scheme: how the pair lives, where it feeds each other and where it controls, and what 2027 changes in the arrangement. The condition for reading is the same as in all articles about year signs: it is one character out of eight in a person's chart.

1 Winter as a shared language

The Pig (亥, hài) stands on the threshold of winter: its month falls roughly on 7 November to 6 December. It is the beginning of the cold, when water has not yet frozen but the day has clearly shortened. Inside 亥 are two hidden stems: 壬 (rén, big water, the ocean) as the main one and 甲 (jiǎ, the big tree). Water, and the tree that grows from it. The Pig in BaZi is not at all "lazy and well-fed": it is deep, branching water in which the coming spring is born.

The Ox (丑, chǒu) stands at the exit from winter: roughly 6 January to 3 February. The water has gone deep and the ground is frozen. Its hidden stems are 己 (Earth), 癸 (small water) and 辛 (metal). The Ox also has water in it, 癸, the remnant of winter.

That is where the feeling of kinship comes from. Both signs wait out the cold and are not afraid of it. They do not need to "pull" each other out of gloom: they sit equally calmly in silence, eat simple food and hurry nowhere. For many couples this quiet togetherness is worth more than all the fireworks.

2 Earth controls Water: what that means at home

Now the elements. Earth controls Water 土克水 (tǔ kè shuǐ): the image of a dam, a channel, a bank. The Ox is Earth by nature and the Pig is Water by nature. The classics see in this relationship not "victory and defeat" but a form. Water without banks spills over, and the earth gives the channel its limits.

In a living pair it looks like this. The Pig is generous and emotional, and tends to spend and give without counting. The Ox is neat and a little tight-fisted, and can say "enough". If both understand that these are complementary functions, the result is a moderate, calm household. The Pig makes the home warm, the Ox makes the home solid.

If, however, the Ox starts to see himself as a "limiter" and the Pig as a "victim of limits", a feeling of pressure arises. The Pig withdraws and begins to hide small spending and small joys. The Ox, sensing mistrust, tightens control. The way out is an explicit division: the Pig should have her own sum and her own territory, where nobody checks.

There is a subtlety in the hidden stems too. The 壬 of the Pig is big, yang water, while the 癸 of the Ox is small, yin water. They are the same element but different in strength: the Pig is deeper, the Ox shallower. But the Ox has a storehouse that gives the water stability. So in "winter" matters (feelings, intuition, a sense for people) the Pig pulls toward the depths and the Ox grounds.

3 Love and marriage

The Pig and the Ox are not the kind of pair that quarrels in public. At home it is usually calm: cozy, well fed, predictable. The Pig knows how to create an atmosphere and the Ox knows how to preserve it. In the first years they are comfortable together and sincerely glad to have found "their person".

Problems begin when one of the two wants more than peace. The Pig is by nature drawn to sensual pleasures, trips, guests and beautiful things. The Ox prefers what is tried and true. By postponing "let's go somewhere" again and again for the sake of "it's too early", the Ox builds up in his partner a feeling that life is passing by. In such situations the Pig does not make a scene; she finds joys elsewhere: girlfriends, hobbies, purchases. The Ox does not notice at once and feels hurt when he does.

The remedy is a routine of "small joys": an agreement on two or three trips a year, a dinner out once a week, a budget for pleasures with no accounting. For the Ox these are expenses; for the Pig they are oxygen.

4 How they see each other

The Pig sees in the Ox what she often lacks herself: a base, a routine, the ability to say "no". The Ox sees in the Pig what brings warmth into his life: generosity, a gift for hosting, an ease in conversation he does not have himself. In the first years each values in the other what they consider their own shortcoming. This is a good foundation, but it works only while the shortcoming is perceived as a shortcoming. When the admiration passes, the same quality begins to irritate: generosity turns into extravagance, reliability into dullness.

The classics name this mechanism with a simple word, polarity. Both signs are yin in essence (although 亥 is counted as a yin branch with a yang main stem, 壬), and both tend to hide feelings. Neither the Ox nor the Pig likes to have it out, so what works best for them is care through action: cook, repair, give a lift, buy the thing mentioned in passing yesterday. For them this is a love language, and if the partner does not recognize it, he feels unloved. It is useful to ask each other honestly: "what is proof of care for you?" The answers surprise.

5 Two scenes from the life of a pair

A big purchase. The Pig has found an apartment or a car she fell in love with at first sight. The Ox asks for a week to calculate and check the documents. For the Pig a week means the feelings cool off, and she fears she will miss out. For the Ox it is the minimum time to sleep calmly. The solution: the Pig takes on scouting and preparing options, the Ox takes on checking and calculating, and the decision date is set in advance. Then each has a legitimate role of their own, and nobody is "braking" or "pressing".

A family celebration. The Pig wants to gather everybody, lay the table and invite the neighbors. The Ox tires of noise and dreams of a quiet evening. A format of "one big celebration a year and one small evening for two each month" works well. The Pig gets her joy, and the Ox has time to recover and a sense that his boundaries are respected.

6 Money and business

The business tandem of the Ox and the Pig often turns out more successful than the partners themselves think. The Pig builds connections, senses people and makes the right acquaintances. The Ox runs the operation: accounts, deadlines, supplies. The pair looks especially good in a family business and in services, food, hospitality and real estate, where both warmth and reliability are valued.

There is one weak spot: boundaries. The Pig may promise more than the Ox is willing to do, and the Ox may refuse in a form that makes the partner lose face. It is solved by roles and an agreement on who takes obligations on behalf of the business. A good practice is that any big promise made outside is agreed with the partner the same day.

7 Friends, family, children

As friends they are calm. The Pig invites and the Ox arrives with something tasty. They discuss simple things: the home, the parents' health, the vegetable garden, prices. It does not matter if they have not met for a month. With children they usually make kind but strict parents: the Pig indulges, the Ox holds the rules, and the child grows up in a warm but structured environment. The only risk is that the Ox may see the Pig's softness as weakness, and the Pig may see the Ox's firmness as coldness. It is worth agreeing in advance on a few shared principles of upbringing and leaving the rest to each person's discretion.

8 The Goat year 2027: an alliance for the Pig, a clash for the Ox

2027 is a 丁未 year (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, beginning at 立春 (Start of Spring) around 4 February 2027. Here the pair finds itself in unequal positions.

The Pig 亥 with the Goat 未 forms part of the Three Harmony 亥卯未 (hài-mǎo-wèi), the alliance of Wood. The alliance is incomplete (it needs the Rabbit 卯 too), but the link is there. The year is friendly: the Goat "opens the door" to the Pig, and themes of team, help and shared work come to the fore. The classics describe it as a year in which the Pig has support, but her own goal may step back in favor of a common one. The article on the Pig in 2027 puts it as "your own team, but someone else's goal".

The Ox 丑 with the Goat 未, by contrast, is in a clash 丑未冲 and in the incomplete punishment 丑戌未. For him the year is mobile and sometimes heavy: changes in affairs, a review of plans, pressure of circumstances.

For the pair as a whole this means: in this year the Pig can be the support and the Ox needs support. It is a fortunate arrangement if both notice it. The danger is that the Pig, inspired by shared projects and the team, may give the Ox less attention, and the Ox, under pressure, will close up and not ask for help. The solution is to set a regular "talk for two" once a week and ask each other the same thing in it: how can I help you?

What you can do in advance. If big steps are planned for 2027 (a renovation, a move, a child, a change of job), spread them so that the Ox's heavier months do not coincide with the peak of the Pig's shared projects. It is better for the Ox not to take on new obligations in the first half of the year while he feels for the ground. The Pig, by contrast, can use the year's "team" background: to negotiate, to meet people, to invest in joint plans. These are notes on the general background and guarantee nothing: if the charts of the two carry other accents, the year will go differently.

Calendar markers. The Rabbit month 癸卯 (roughly 6 March to 4 April 2027) brings the Pig the missing corner of the trio with the Goat. For the Ox there is no direct clash in the same period. The Rat month 壬子 at the end of the year (roughly 7 December 2027 to 5 January 2028) brings the missing branch for the winter combination 亥子丑. In that period the pair gets a "full winter block", although the Rat itself is linked with the Goat of the year by harm, 子未害. Nothing dramatic: it is more a time of quiet summing up.

The Pig and the Ox cope well with long commitments. A mortgage, a plot of land, care for parents, raising children: their temperament suits such tasks perfectly. So in a pair of these two there is often more attention to the future than to the present. Do not forget to leave room in the schedule for light things unconnected with duties. A couple that has only obligations turns over time into a well-organized enterprise rather than a union of two people.

9 What is hidden behind the signs

As always, we are speaking of the branches of the birth year, one quarter of a chart. The Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ) can change the picture radically. A Pig with a Day Master of 甲 (tree) has a root in the branch 亥 (the 甲 is hidden inside it), and the link with the trio 亥卯未 is more tangible for her than for a Pig with a Day Master of 丁, who has no fire stem in her 亥 branch.

The Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng) lies in the day branch. If the Ox has 寅 there and the Pig has 亥, the result is a Six Harmony 寅亥合 (though with a shade of destruction). If the Ox has 午, that is a harm 丑午害, and then your pair is more tense than the years show.

A compatibility check by charts consists of five layers: Day Masters, palaces, balance of elements, relationship stars and Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). It gives no percentage and pins no label; it shows where the pair is strong. The method is described in detail in the article BaZi Compatibility: five layers of the real method. You can start with a free chart and compare two people on the compatibility page. For the broader mood of the year in love, see love in 2027.

10 Frequently asked questions

Are the Ox and the Pig compatible?

The branches 丑 and 亥 belong to the winter combination 亥子丑, but the Ox's Earth controls the Pig's Water. This is a general background. Real compatibility is decided by the full charts of both partners.

What is the 三會 亥子丑?

It is the seasonal Directional Combination of the three winter branches: Pig, Rat, Ox. It strengthens the element of Water. In an Ox–Pig pair the combination is incomplete, because the Rat 子 is missing.

Who controls whom: the Ox the Pig, or the reverse?

By the elements of the branches, Earth (the Ox) controls Water (the Pig). That does not mean the Ox is "senior": the classics see in it a form and boundaries, not subordination.

What awaits the Ox and the Pig in 2027?

The Pig is in an incomplete trio 亥卯未 with the Goat, and the Ox is in a 丑未冲 clash. This is the background of the year, not a prediction. The Pig can be a support, and the Ox benefits from help and a plan for the time.

When does the pair get the full winter block 亥子丑?

In the Rat month 壬子 (roughly 7 December 2027 to 5 January 2028) or when 子 is present in one of the charts. This is a calendar landmark, not a promise of events.
