Some pairs in Chinese astrology get discussed endlessly because there is plenty to discuss: combinations, clashes, punishments. Almost nobody writes about the Ox and the Monkey. The reason is simple: between 丑 (chǒu) and 申 (shēn) there is not a single classical link. They do not share a trio, they do not make a Six Harmony pair, they do not stand opposite each other, and they do not "harm" one another.
For a reader looking for a quick "do we fit or not", that sounds like a dead end. In fact, the absence of a link is the most flexible situation in BaZi. The pair receives neither ready-made support nor a ready-made conflict. Whatever happens between them depends on the people's characters, and in BaZi character is defined by the whole chart, not by the sign of the birth year. Below we cover what can still be said about 丑 and 申 through the elements, and where the line runs beyond which birth-year signs stop working.
1 What a "neutral pair" means in BaZi
The classics give the twelve branches a set of relationships: Six Harmony 六合 (liù hé), Three Harmony 三合 (sān hé), Directional Combination 三會 (sān huì), clash 六冲 (liù chōng), harm 六害 (liù hài), destruction 六破 (liù pò) and punishment 三刑 (sān xíng). Any branch may have one, two or none of these with another branch.
The Ox 丑 has such links with the Rat (the 子丑 Six Harmony), the Goat (clash), the Horse (harm 丑午), the Dragon (destruction 辰丑), the Dog and the Goat (punishment), the Snake and the Rooster (the 巳酉丑 trio), and the Pig and the Rat (the 亥子丑 directional combination). With the Monkey the Ox has nothing. The Monkey 申 is linked with the Rat and the Dragon (the 申子辰 trio), the Snake (Six Harmony and destruction 巳申), the Tiger (clash), the Pig (harm 申亥), and the Rooster and the Dog (the 申酉戌 directional combination). The Ox is missing from that list as well.
No classical link means that at the level of the birth-year branches nothing pushes the pair in either direction. What remains is the elements, and there is a hook: 丑 is Earth by nature, 申 is Metal by nature, and Earth produces Metal 土生金 (tǔ shēng jīn).
2 Earth that feeds Metal
Inside the Ox lie three stems: 己 (jǐ, soft Earth), 癸 (guǐ, water) and 辛 (xīn, yin Metal, "jewelry"). The Monkey carries a different set: 庚 (gēng, yang Metal, the axe and the blade), 壬 (rén, big water, a river) and 戊 (wù, yang Earth, a mountain). Both branches hold Earth, Metal and Water. The hidden contents echo each other, though they are distributed differently.
| Ox 丑 | Monkey 申 | |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity | Yin | Yang |
| Nature | Earth, storehouse of Metal | Metal, start of autumn |
| Hidden stems | 己 · 癸 · 辛 | 庚 · 壬 · 戊 |
| Tempo | slow, accumulating | fast, cutting |
| Tendency | hold on, see it through | invent, switch |
In real life, Earth producing Metal looks like asymmetric care. The Ox creates conditions in which the Monkey is comfortable: a stable household, a solid back, predictability. Against that background the Monkey blossoms, tries new things and comes up with ideas. If both understand how the scheme works, the result is a sturdy tandem: one provides footing, the other provides movement.
But producing has a flip side, and the classics know it too: the "mother" gets drained when the "child" takes and returns nothing. An Ox who carries the house for years while the Monkey is "finding themselves" will eventually tire, and the fatigue will come out as a dry reproach. The Monkey will take the reproach as an attack. That is not a clash of branches. It is an ordinary imbalance in giving.
3 Love: how they meet and how they live
The Ox and the Monkey seldom fall in love at first sight. The Ox looks things over for a long time and reliably, while the Monkey is curious and sociable but not very open. At the start the pair runs on interest: the Monkey amazes the Ox with a quick mind, and the Ox wins the Monkey by being someone to whom any secret can be entrusted.
Then the household differences begin. The Monkey likes to change plans, postpone and try. The Ox is used to an agreement being an agreement. For the Monkey, revising plans is a natural property of a mind at work. For the Ox it is unreliability. He does not shout. He writes out a mental invoice.
An honest agreement about frames works well in this pair. For example: all changes to next week's plans are discussed by Thursday, and after that what was decided stands. The Monkey may see this as a restriction, but in fact it protects her from the feeling that her partner is pressing on her, and it lets the Ox avoid clenching his teeth at every change.
A separate word on trust. The Monkey tends to joke where others stay silent, and at first the Ox finds it hard to tell a joke from a signal. He takes words seriously and keeps them. A year later the Ox may answer with a quote the Monkey forgot long ago. One simple habit helps: after a joke on a sharp subject, ask "are you serious?" The question takes three seconds and saves months of misunderstanding. On the Ox's side the opposite rule works: if something stung, say so at once rather than filing it away in the "archive".
A neutral pair: the day pillars and stems decide
When the birth-year branches are silent, the other layers of the chart decide the fate of the union. A Couple Compatibility Reading compares the pillars of both people and shows where you find support.
Couple Compatibility Reading · $14.904 Work and money: who generates, who delivers
In business the Ox–Monkey pair is potentially strong, because the functions separate naturally. The Monkey finds the idea, negotiates, sells and reacts quickly to the market. The Ox builds processes, counts, keeps deadlines and closes debts. It is the classic pairing of "author and producer", "salesperson and logistics".
The pitfalls are the usual ones for any union of ideas and execution. If the Monkey brings ten ideas a month, the Ox will soon stop telling important ones from casual ones and will answer them all the same way: "later". If the Ox overloads the Monkey with regulations, she loses interest and looks for an outlet elsewhere. The cure is a division of roles and a rhythm of meetings: a short weekly review of what goes into work and what goes into the "piggy bank".
On money: the Ox likes to save, the Monkey likes turnover. For a shared budget it helps to separate a cushion from working money. The Ox manages the cushion, the Monkey manages the working money. Each gets the right to make mistakes on their own territory.
5 Friendship and everyday contact
As friends they turn out warm and a little odd. The Ox admires the Monkey's speed but does not try to keep up. The Monkey values the Ox for not judging her by her mood. They may not have many topics in common, and that is fine: they are friends through difference, not similarity. The main danger of the friendship is losing touch without a quarrel. They can simply stop calling because each thinks the other "knows we are friends anyway".
6 What the hidden stems show
When the branches are silent, the classics go one level deeper and compare what lies inside. Our pair has an interesting echo there. The Ox hides 辛 (xīn), soft Metal, while the Monkey's main stem is 庚 (gēng), hard Metal. These are "brother and sister" by element: the same material, but one stem is the jeweler's, the other is the cutter's. The Ox keeps the metal in reserve, the Monkey holds it in the hand.
Their Earths echo too: 己 in the Ox and 戊 in the Monkey, soft ground and a mountain. The water also rhymes: 癸 in the Ox is a quiet stream and 壬 in the Monkey is a river. It turns out that by inner composition these branches understand each other better than they do from the outside. The Ox and the Monkey sometimes surprise their friends: "so different, and yet they somehow fit". The reason is that they speak the same inner set of materials, only at a different volume.
Three scenes where this shows. On holiday, the Monkey wants to see as much as possible, the Ox wants a proper rest in one place. A compromise of "one base for the week and two excursions" suits them both. In a renovation, the Ox works out the estimate and the Monkey thinks of how to do everything differently and cheaper, and together they find a solution neither would have reached alone. In an argument, the Monkey speaks fast and to the point, and the Ox answers a day later, slowly but on the merits. If the argument is not finished that same evening because of the difference in tempo, a week can be lost to grievances nobody intended.
7 What this pair lacks
Because the branches have no classical link, this pair gets no "gifts" from the structure itself. The Horse and the Goat (午未合, a Six Harmony pair) have a natural warmth, and the Ox and the Rooster have a shared metal trio. The Ox and the Monkey have to build a common language on purpose.
- A shared project. Any real undertaking: a house, a trip, a course. Neutral pairs come alive when they have a task, not only a relationship.
- Meeting rituals. The Ox values regularity. The Monkey needs novelty. Keep the schedule regular and vary the format: a date every Thursday, but in a new place each time.
- A direct talk about roles. Who in the couple is "the one who holds" and who is "the one who moves". It is better to say it aloud and revise it than to leave it in the subtext.
8 The Ox and the Monkey in 2027
2027 is a 丁未 year (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat. It begins around 4 February 2027 (立春, Start of Spring), and in this year 未 acts as Tai Sui 太歲, the "lord of the year". The two signs stand differently relative to it.
In 2027 the Ox is in a clash with Tai Sui: 丑未冲, and also in the 丑戌未 punishment if the Dog shows up in a chart or in a month. The classics regard such a year as mobile: decisions may change, circumstances may press, the familiar may be reviewed. This is a general background, not a prediction of events.
The Monkey in 2027 has no classical link with 未. What matters is something else. The main stem of the Goat, 己 (Earth), produces Metal, so for the Monkey the background of the year is rather supportive. But on top sits the year's heavenly stem 丁 (Fire), and Fire controls Metal. So support comes with a little pressure: the conditions are there, but you should not relax or burn resources on nothing. For the Monkey it is more of a "quiet feeding without an alliance", as the separate article on the Monkey in 2027 puts it.
For the pair this adds up to a picture in which the Ox is more loaded and the Monkey is freer. The danger is that the Monkey, feeling a reserve of strength, will pull shared plans toward risk, while the Ox, already under load, will take it as frivolity. A simple rule for the year: discuss any big step (a purchase, a move, a change of job) together and without hurry, giving the Ox time to "digest" it.
By the calendar, the Monkey has its own month, 戊申, running roughly from 8 August to 7 September 2027 (the borders float by a day either way). For the Ox there is no direct influence in that period. That window can be used for joint decisions that would be harder for the Ox to make in other months.
9 Why the sign of the year is only the top layer
Everything above is built on two branches out of the eight characters in each person's chart. The rest is decided by the full chart. First you look at the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ), the heavenly stem of the day of birth. Then at the day branch, the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng). Then at the elemental balance: what the chart lacks and what needs to be added.
For our pair the key question is this. If the Ox has the day branch 子 and the Monkey has 辰, then together with the year branches a chain 申子辰 and 子丑 appears: connections show up between the charts that the year signs do not display, and they work in the pair's favor. If, instead, the Monkey has the day branch 寅, then 寅申冲 (yín-shēn chōng, the Tiger–Monkey clash) right inside the union adds tension that the year branches do not show.
The five structural checks for a pair are: the chemistry of the Day Masters, the Spouse Palaces, the balance of elements (the "healing" quality of the union), the relationship stars, and the synchronicity of Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). No compatibility percentage comes out of it, and that is correct: a percentage would hide the substance. The method is described in detail in the article BaZi Compatibility: five layers of the real method. To see your own pillars first, start with a free chart, then compare two people on the compatibility page.
By birth-year signs, the Ox and the Monkey are a pair with neither a curse nor a blessing behind them. What comes of it is decided by the people and their charts.

Are the Ox and the Monkey compatible?
There are no direct classical links between the branches 丑 and 申, so the pair is neutral. The Ox's Earth produces the Monkey's Metal, which can give gentle support. But the outcome is decided by the full charts of both partners, not by the birth-year signs.
What does a "neutral pair" mean in BaZi?
It means there is no combination, trio, clash, harm, destruction or punishment between the branches. The structure neither helps nor hinders, and everything depends on the other pillars of the chart and on the people's characters.
Who supports whom in this pair?
By the elements, Earth (the Ox) produces Metal (the Monkey), so the Ox tends to provide the base. But if the giving flows in one direction only, the "mother" gets tired, and the pair has to watch the balance.
How does the Goat year 2027 affect the Ox and the Monkey?
The Ox is in a 丑未 clash with Tai Sui, and the Monkey has no direct link. This is the general background of the year, not a forecast of events. Big decisions are better discussed together and in advance.
Do I need other data to judge compatibility?
Yes: the date, time and place of birth of both people. From them come the Day Master, the Spouse Palace, the elemental balance and the Luck Pillars 大運. The birth-year sign is one of eight characters.
