Open the circle of twelve branches and find 丑 and 未. There are exactly six steps between them in either direction, so they face each other like twelve and six on a clock. BaZi calls such pairs the Six Clashes 六冲 (liù chōng), and 丑未冲 (chǒu-wèi chōng, the Ox–Goat clash) is the most earthbound of them. There is no wind, water or fire here to slam the doors. Two Earths collide. The sound is dull, like a spade hitting frozen ground, and people often do not hear it right away.

The Ox (丑, chǒu) and the Goat (未, wèi) look very much alike on the surface: both are yin, both belong to Earth, and both are considered "quiet" signs. That similarity is what misleads people. They look at the two calm Earths and assume they will understand each other without words. Sometimes they do. More often these two spend years storing what they have not said, and then discover that they have been using the word "order" to mean entirely different things.

Below we look at what this pairing is made of, how it behaves in love, friendship and business, and what 2027 does to it. That year is 丁未 (dīng-wèi) and it is a Goat year. One caveat has to come first, because nothing else in the article reads correctly without it: the birth-year sign is a single character out of the eight in a person's chart. Real compatibility in BaZi is read from two complete charts. What follows is only the surface layer.

1 Two Earths, but not twins

Before talking about the clash, it helps to see that these are two different kinds of soil.

丑 is "wet earth" 濕土 (shī tǔ). It is the end of winter, roughly 6 January to 3 February: frozen clay that still holds the water of the previous month. The Ox is slow, dense and cold to the touch. Inside the branch sit three hidden stems, with 己 (jǐ, soft Earth) as the main one, then 癸 (guǐ, water) and 辛 (xīn, refined Metal). That is why 丑 is called the storehouse of Metal 金庫 (jīn kù): it holds what has been maturing all winter.

未 is "dry earth" 燥土 (zào tǔ). It is the end of summer, roughly 7 July to 7 August: baked ground and a parched vegetable garden. It also has three hidden stems, with 己 as the main one, then 丁 (dīng, candle flame, heat) and 乙 (yǐ, grass and vines). 未 is the storehouse of Wood 木庫 (mù kù): the roots still hold, but the grass has already turned yellow.

They share one stem, 己. That is the thread the pair hangs on: both cling to what is familiar, and both want a home and a plot of ground under their feet. Everything else inside the two branches is in opposition, and that is the subject of the next section.

2 What actually collides in 丑未冲

The classical explanation of a clash runs through the hidden stems. Lay 丑 and 未 side by side and you get three pairs: 己 against 己 (shared Earth, nobody's), 癸 against 丁, and 辛 against 乙. Water puts out fire, and Metal cuts Wood. Two "calm" branches are full of mutual blows inside, and that is where the dull friction comes from.

In everyday terms, the Ox in a partnership stockpiles: money, projects, grievances, food in the freezer. The Goat does the opposite and spends and redistributes. She needs the people around her to feel warm and sympathetic, and reliability alone is not enough. For the Ox, "good" means "solid". For the Goat, "good" means "humane". Each one considers their own position obvious and therefore never explains it.

There is a third line as well. These two signs belong to the trio 丑戌未 (chǒu-xū-wèi), which forms the punishment 三刑 (sān xíng) of a special kind: the classics call it 無恩之刑 (wú ēn zhī xíng), the ungrateful punishment. A full trio needs the Dog 戌 too. While the Dog is absent, the punishment is incomplete, but the aftertaste remains. Both branches are Earth, made of the same dough, and they hurt each other in a family way: they expect a lot from one another and do not forgive small things. In charts where the Dog turns up in another pillar, or in a year when it arrives from outside (more on 2027 below), the trio closes and the friction becomes noticeable.

A clash is not a breakup. 冲 is movement, not a sentence. Branches that face each other have no default compromise, so they push each other, whatever happens. The pair either learns to move together or drifts apart. A combination 合 in other pairs does not guarantee an easy life either; it just binds in a different way.

3 Love and marriage: how it looks at home

If your day branches (the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮, fū qī gōng) are 丑 and 未, the link is much stronger than when only the birth-year signs match. A "year against year" pairing usually shows up more gently: it is a background, not a palace.

The first months of such a couple are often remarkably harmonious. Both are unhurried, both value home, and nobody demands fireworks. The first quarrel grows out of something small: someone did not take out the trash, did not call the parents back, or spent money on something that "could have been skipped". The Ox takes this as a breach of contract. The Goat takes the Ox's reaction as coldness, and the less people talk to her, the more she withdraws.

A typical scenario goes like this. She is the Goat, he is the Ox. She feels unloved because he is silent. He feels guilty without being told why, because he is investing, providing and doing things. Both sincerely believe it is obvious from the outset. A couple that has not found a shared language for the word "attention" risks becoming two good people living in parallel.

What helps in practice is agreeing on rituals: once a week a conversation without phones, one evening for just the two of you. It also helps to split spending into "shared" and "personal", so the Goat has her own sum for spontaneous pleasures and the Ox has his untouchable reserve. It sounds dull, but rules like these turn 丑未冲 from a fight into everyday routine.

4 Friends and the family around them

Ox and Goat make friends much more easily than they make partners. A friendship has no joint household and no shared money, so it has no main point of impact. The Ox shows up to help with a move and asks no unnecessary questions. The Goat brings tea and conversation after which it is easier to breathe. Each gets from the other what they have little of themselves.

Family is harder. If the Ox is the parent and the Goat is the child (or the other way round), the conflict moves into evaluation. The Ox wants the child to "make something of themselves". The Goat as a child wants recognition regardless of results. A Goat parent, in turn, tends to look after an Ox child in a way that feels like an intrusion into private life. A simple rule helps here: do not assess, ask what is needed right now.

5 Work and business: who is responsible for what

A business pair of Ox and Goat is productive within a narrow corridor. The Ox runs processes, counts, keeps discipline. The Goat senses people, smooths things over and finds the words for clients. As long as the roles are separate, they complement each other. When the Ox reaches into the "human" side and the Goat into the "numbers", 丑未冲 appears in its pure form: each one invades the zone where the other feels like the owner.

In a partnership it pays to write down who decides on money, who decides on people, and who holds a veto. The Ox tends to agree silently and remember it later. The Goat tends to promise more than she can deliver and to delay answering. If the agreement has no deadlines and no named owners, the pair will stall without ever quarrelling.

One more feature comes from the storehouses. 丑 stores Metal, 未 stores Wood, and Metal chops Wood. In business terms, the Ox may cut the Goat's ideas off at the root by calling them unrealistic, while the Goat can wreck deadlines that are sacred to the Ox through her soft inertia. The cure is the same as at home, in working form: write ideas down, fix deadlines, and make decisions in a meeting rather than "along the way".

6 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

Where it rubsWhat it looks likeWhat eases the tension
MoneyThe Ox saves, the Goat spends "on life"Two wallets, shared and personal, each with its own untouchable remainder
SilenceThe Ox is quiet out of reliability, the Goat reads it as rejectionOnce a week, a talk about "what is on my mind", with no decisions and no reproaches
OrderEach has a different system for things and tasksDivide the zones: everyone keeps their own, and the other's rules do not apply there
RelativesThe Goat depends on the family's opinion, the Ox on principlesDecide about relatives together and in advance, not after the fact
GrievancesThe Ox stores them, the Goat flares up and cools downDo not postpone the talk: after a day a grievance has already turned into a "system"

One rule holds for every 冲: the clearer the personal territory, the softer the collision. Two Earths quarrel when they have to share a single plot with no boundary strip. Put in the boundary and you can sit down to tea together on the shared veranda.

7 These two in 2027: the Goat has her own year

2027 is a 丁未 year (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat. It begins at 立春 (lì chūn, the Start of Spring), around 4 February 2027. For our pair this means each partner has a separate storyline.

The Goat is in her ben ming nian 本命年, her own year, which the classics call 值太歲 (zhí Tài Suì, "meeting Tai Sui"). Her branch 未 matches the year's branch, a configuration called fu yin 伏吟, "repetition". The classics do not treat it as a disaster, but they advise against pushing yourself: your own year more often brings heightened sensitivity, a wish to change something, and a sharp sense of "I am at the center now". A Goat in such a year needs her partner's attention more than usual and gets more irritated when it is missing.

The Ox is in a direct clash with Tai Sui: 丑未冲. The Ox in that year more often feels pressure from outside: a change of duties, a review of plans, the need to move earlier than he would like. There is also the incomplete punishment 丑戌未, which comes alive if the Dog appears in a chart or in a month (the 庚戌 month falls roughly between 8 October and 6 November 2027). The Ox keeps his strength through all this. The clash moves him, and many people use such a year to do something they have long postponed.

In the couple this looks like the Goat "at the center" and the Ox "under pressure". There is a trap here: the Ox partner may read the Goat's heightened emotion as whims, and the Goat partner may read the Ox's fatigue as coldness. Agree a year ahead that big decisions (moving, a mortgage, a job change) are discussed no sooner than a week after the first thought of them. It is no guarantee of a calm year, but it removes half the arguments. All of this is general background for the year, not a prediction of events.

One more detail. The year of birth 1967 is also 丁未, the same stem and branch as 2027. For people born that year, 2027 brings back their own pillar and completes a full sixty-year cycle. If one of you was born in 1967, this year will sound louder in your chart than it does for an ordinary Goat. For the wider picture of the year itself, see the Ox in 2027 and the Goat in 2027.

8 Why the sign of the year is only the top layer

Everything above describes the branches of the birth year. That is one of the four pillars of a chart. In BaZi the main figure is the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ), the heavenly stem of the day of birth, which stands for the person's essence. Two Oxen can behave completely differently: if one has a Day Master of 甲 (big tree) and the other 癸 (rain), they will be different people in a marriage too.

The birth-year signs say nothing about what stands in each partner's day branch. And the day branch is the one that holds the Spouse Palace. If by year you are an Ox and a Goat, but your day branches form a combination (say 午 and 未, a Six Harmony 六合), your home will be noticeably warmer than the year signs promise. If your day branch is 丑 and your partner's is 未, your pair has 丑未冲 right at the center of the union, which is a different level of tension altogether.

A professional compatibility check has five structural layers: Day Masters, Spouse Palaces, elemental balance (what each person needs and lacks), relationship stars, and the synchronicity of Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). There is no compatibility percentage in such a reading, because the classics do not have one. What you get is a description of where the pair supports each other and where it is thin. The method is laid out in the article BaZi Compatibility: five layers instead of one percentage.

Here is an example of how charts can overrule signs. Say the Ox has a Day Master of 甲 and the Goat has 己: that is 甲己合, a stem combination, and a strong pull. By year branches the Ox and Goat collide, yet by day stems they are firmly bound. Or take an Ox with a Day Master of 庚. For him the 丁 of 2027 is Direct Officer 正官, the "proper boss", while the Goat's main stem 己 gives him Direct Resource 正印, support and a base. The same 2027 reads differently for Oxen with different Day Masters. You can only read it from a full chart: date, time and place of birth. You can start with a free chart at our free chart page, and compare two people on the compatibility page.

9 Frequently asked questions

Are the Ox and Goat compatible?

The branches 丑 and 未 form a Six Clash 六冲, so in that sense the pair is considered tense. But this is the compatibility of birth-year signs only, one of the eight characters of a chart. What decides it is the full chart of each partner: Day Master, Spouse Palace and elemental balance.

What does 丑未冲 mean in plain words?

The branches 丑 and 未 stand opposite each other on the circle. Their hidden stems fight: 癸 (water) against 丁 (fire), 辛 (metal) against 乙 (wood). In life this shows up as different ideas about order, money and closeness.

What does the 三刑 丑戌未 punishment mean for an Ox and a Goat?

It is an incomplete punishment: two of the three participants are present, and the Dog 戌 is missing. It shows as a tendency to press on each other and an unwillingness to give way. It closes fully when the Dog arrives in one of the charts or in a month of the year.

What awaits an Ox and Goat couple in 2027?

The Goat is in her own year (本命年, 值太歲), and the Ox clashes with Tai Sui 未. This is the general background of the year, not a prediction of events. It is better to agree in advance on how to make big decisions and on each person's personal space.

Can I use the birth-year sign to choose a partner?

Only as a surface hint. It is more useful to look at both Day Masters and at the Spouse Palace branches. Those show how people actually live together.
