The word "punishment" in the name 三刑 (sān xíng) is scarier than it deserves. In classical BaZi it does not describe a penalty but a characteristic friction between branches: they do not destroy each other, as in a clash, but press, rub and push. It is more like tight shoes than a fall down the stairs. You can walk, but you notice every step.
The Ox (丑, chǒu) and the Dog (戌, xū) belong to a trio of exactly this type: 丑戌未 (chǒu-xū-wèi). The third participant is the Goat 未. And as it happens, 2027 is a 丁未 year, the Fire Goat. So in that year the Goat arrives and closes the trio, forming it on the "field" of the Ox–Dog pair. Because of this the pair gets an unusually vivid two-phase reading: a shared structure at the level of the signs and a special year at the level of time.
Below we look at what this punishment is, how it shows up in everyday life, where the pair finds support, and what to do about it. All the usual caveats hold: the birth-year sign is one character out of eight, and a couple's fate does not follow from it.
1 Three Earths and three storehouses
The trio 丑戌未 is assembled entirely from Earth branches, and it is the only one of the three "punishment" groups that contains no sign of another element. Each of the three branches is a storehouse 墓庫 (mù kù): a place where an element is "buried" and accumulates.
| Branch | Storehouse of | Nature of the earth | Hidden stems |
|---|---|---|---|
Storehouses keep what has been put into them, and they "open" through a clash or a punishment. That is an important image: in the classics the trio 丑戌未 is read as the "opening" of accumulations, and not necessarily for the worse. What was hidden comes out: abilities, money, grievances, secrets. Which contents open is determined by the rest of the chart.
The Ox–Dog pair already carries two corners of the trio. The Ox stores Metal (and holds 辛 too), the Dog stores Fire, and its own set also includes 辛 and 丁. The shared stem 辛 (xīn) is a thin thread that binds them inwardly: both carry a "jewel" inside that they do not show.
2 Which punishment this is
The classics distinguish three kinds of 三刑. 寅巳申 (Tiger, Snake, Monkey) is 恃勢之刑 (shì shì zhī xíng), the punishment of power. 子卯 (Rat and Rabbit) is 無禮之刑 (wú lǐ zhī xíng), the rude punishment. Ours, 丑戌未, is 無恩之刑 (wú ēn zhī xíng), the ungrateful punishment.
The name tells you the character of the friction. 無恩 literally means "without gratitude". All three branches of the trio are related by the element Earth, made of the same dough, and for that reason they hurt especially much: the way close people quarrel when they expect a lot from each other and do not forgive small things. Neither the Ox nor the Dog is inclined to yield: the Ox stands on principle, the Dog on fairness, and both think they have the right to insist. When both are "in position", a silent pressure starts: reproaches, demonstrative non-participation, "I told you so".
A separate nuance: between 丑 and 戌 themselves there is no clash and no harm, only this part of the punishment. So until the trio "closes", the pair lives more gently than an Ox with a Goat or a Dog with a Goat. But when the Goat is present (in a chart, a month or a year), the amplification is clearly noticeable.
3 Love: the quiet persistence of two people
The Ox and the Dog as a couple make a union of two serious people. Both are faithful, both take on obligations, both believe that love is expressed in deeds. In the first years such a relationship looks very solid: nobody flirts, disappears or springs surprises that frighten.
Tension arises over questions of fairness. The Dog is extremely sensitive to injustice, especially toward those close to her. She notices who invested how much, who said what, whose contribution was not appreciated. The Ox, who by temperament saves up and does not comment, often underestimates this sensitivity and misses the moment when the Dog is already hurt. Her response is not a shout but a separation: "fine, do as you like." The Ox takes this as permission and really does it his own way. So distance builds up.
What helps in a pair with a punishment is to agree on words in advance. If "fairness" means different things to each of you, write down what exactly: who cooks, who pays, who decides about the children, how time is divided. It sounds like an employment contract, but these pairs work precisely by contract. When the rules are transparent, the wish to "impose by force" falls away by itself.
Another marker. Both signs bear public quarrels poorly. So conflicts go deep, and a conversation happens only when three rounds have piled up. It is better to talk in small portions and on time. In a pair with 刑, a small talk today beats a big scene a month from now.
The trio closes: what that means in your couple
A Couple Compatibility Reading shows where 丑戌未 really exists in the charts and where it lives only in the year signs. The difference is large.
Couple Compatibility Reading · $14.904 Work and business: strong discipline, weak flexibility
In business the Ox and the Dog make a very solid pair. They are honest, they do not abandon projects, they do not cheat clients. The Ox is responsible for the foundation and execution, the Dog for quality control and the protection of interests. These two will not steal from each other and will not set each other up. For a business where trust matters (legal services, construction, consulting), that is serious capital.
The weakness of the pair is rigidity. 丑戌未 as a punishment reflects stiffness: standing your ground even when the market or circumstances demand change. If the Ox and the Dog make the same mistake in business, it will be hard to correct from outside, because they reinforce each other. It is useful to have a third participant in the partnership who asks uncomfortable questions, and a ritual of "annual review": once a year, sit down and ask what we are doing wrong.
Dividing zones of responsibility here is not a wish but a necessity. If both hold a veto over everything, every decision becomes a negotiation. If each is master in their own area and in common matters you decide by turns or by lot, work runs smoothly.
5 Friendship and everyday life
They are good friends, but not intrusive ones. The Ox is reliable and quiet, the Dog is devoted and straightforward. Do not expect raptures from them; expect help at a hard moment. The friendship of an Ox and a Dog can last for decades without ever becoming an "event". The main risk is a disagreement on a matter of principle (politics, religion, raising children). If neither is ready to compromise, contact simply winds down without explanations.
A separate word on money, because this is the slipperiest zone for the pair. The Ox saves and invests in the long term, while the Dog sacrifices herself for her own people and gives away the last easily. The Ox may see this as wastefulness, and the Dog sees in the Ox's savings a distrust of others. A "generosity tax" works well: the budget sets aside in advance a sum the Dog may spend on helping others without accounting for it. The Ox is calm because everything is within limits, and the Dog is free because she does not have to ask.
6 Typical conflicts and how to soften them
| Scenario | How it shows | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| "Who is right" | Both consider their position obvious and neither yields | Replace the question "who is right" with "what do we do next" |
| Quiet resistance | Agreed in words, did not do it in practice | Record agreements in writing, with a date |
| Unspoken grievance | What has piled up bursts out over a trifle | A weekly 15-minute talk, strictly without reviewing the past |
| Outside pressure | Relatives, bosses or circumstances inflate the quarrel | Speak to third parties together, not separately |
| Rigidity | Neither wants to be the first to soften | Agree that whoever first notices the deadlock softens, with no score-keeping |
7 Roles in the pair: who presses on whom
A punishment has no "guilty party", but there is a distribution of roles that is worth noticing. In an Ox–Dog couple one of two schemes most often forms.
In the first, the Ox sets the course and the Dog tests it for honesty. The Ox has decided where to put the money and where to live, and the Dog inspects the decision from the angle of "is this fair to both of us, to the children, to the parents". While the check is friendly, the pair gets a solid foundation. When the Dog begins to see a catch in every decision of the Ox, and the Ox sees mistrust in every check, a cycle of mutual claims begins.
In the second scheme the roles swap: the Dog leads because her sense of duty is stronger and she is readier to take responsibility, while the Ox patiently follows and accumulates disagreement. The danger in this scheme is that the Ox's consent looks complete to the Dog, and she learns his real position too late. A simple habit helps: before an important decision, ask your partner to say aloud what they disagree with, even if they "agree in general".
The pair is helped by a shared activity outside the relationship: a hobby, volunteering, a plot of land, a club for the children. Both signs feel excellent where there is a concrete task and a clear result. Busy together, they "dissect" each other less and work side by side more. For a couple with friction that is exactly what is needed: shared labor, not endless analysis of the relationship.
8 The year 2027: the Goat closes the trio
2027 is a 丁未 year (dīng-wèi), starting at 立春 (Start of Spring) around 4 February 2027. The branch 未 here is Tai Sui 太歲, the lord of the year. For the pair this means the following.
For the Ox the year brings two influences at once: the clash 丑未冲 and participation in the punishment 丑戌未. For the Dog 2027 is not simple either: the punishment 丑戌未 and the destruction 戌未 (六破 liù pò). On the whole it is a year the classics call "moving": agreements are reviewed, what has accumulated becomes visible, and what was stored may be opened up.
Now the pair. Because both partners carry branches of the trio and the year brings the third corner, the trio 丑戌未 is considered closed at the level of the year in 2027. The effect is moderate, because it works through the general background rather than through the pillars of the personal charts. But in practice it is noticeable: for many couples of this combination 2027 will be a year when old unresolved questions come to the surface. For example, unspoken matters about money, parents, children, and who owes what to whom. This is a general background for the year, not a prediction of events.
The good news is that "opening a storehouse" is not necessarily a loss. If what has accumulated in the pair is warmth, support and resources, these become visible and available too. It all depends on what was stored. If the pair spent years storing grievances, the year will remind them of it. If they stored care, the year will let it come out.
A calendar marker: the 庚戌 month in 2027 falls roughly on 8 October to 6 November (the borders vary by a day either way). That is the season of the Dog, and 戌 in the month, together with the Goat of the year and the Ox in the pair, gathers the trio again. For sensitive couples it is a time not to put off hard conversations "for later" and not to make irreversible decisions in a state of irritation.
9 What the year sign will not show
In a real chart the trio 丑戌未 can appear to different degrees. If one partner has 戌 in the day branch and the other has 丑 in the year branch, the punishment acts on the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng) directly. If the Dog stands only in the year and the day branches are harmonious (for example 卯 and 戌, a Six Harmony), the pair gets off more lightly than the signs hint.
It also matters that the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ) determines how a person relates to "pressure" in general. For a Day Master of 辛 (refined Metal), both the Ox and the Dog contain its own stem, so the trio is felt as "its own". For a Day Master of 乙 (grass), the same trio is the opening of a storehouse where it gets "cut". The same signs, quite different feelings.
A professional compatibility check goes in five steps: Day Masters, Spouse Palaces, balance of elements, relationship stars, and Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). It gives no compatibility percentage and does not say "you fit" or "you don't"; it shows where the pair is strong and where it needs conscious work. The method is covered in the article on the five layers of compatibility. To see your own pillars, begin with a free chart and compare two people on the compatibility page.

What is the 三刑 丑戌未 punishment?
It is a punishment of three Earths: the Ox 丑, the Dog 戌 and the Goat 未. The classics call it 無恩之刑, the ungrateful punishment. It shows as stubborn friction and pressure, not as destruction.
Are the Ox and the Dog compatible?
At the level of birth-year signs the pair forms an incomplete 丑戌未 punishment and is considered tense. It is not a sentence: the outcome is decided by the full charts and the Day Masters.
What does 2027 hold for an Ox and a Dog?
The Goat 未 closes the trio 丑戌未. The Ox is also in a 丑未冲 clash and the Dog in a 戌未 destruction. That is the general background of the year. Regular talks about money and obligations help.
Why does an Ox–Dog couple not quarrel loudly?
Both signs lean toward restraint. Conflicts go into silence and quiet resistance, so they are harder to notice. It is better to discuss small things at once than to save them up for an explosion.
Can the 刑 be softened in a pair?
Yes: clear zones of responsibility, written agreements, regular short talks, and the habit of not proving who is right. The full picture is always determined by the charts, not by the signs.
