Place the Monkey and the Rooster side by side on the map of the twelve branches and they turn out to be neighbors: 申 is the ninth branch, 酉 the tenth. The first opens autumn, the second crowns it. Both signs belong to the Metal element, both are tied to the western sector of the circle and to the time when the harvest is in and you must decide what to keep and what to discard. But Metal differs from Metal, and that difference is where everything interesting lies.

In the classical tables the Monkey and the Rooster have no Six Harmony 六合, no clash 沖, no punishment 刑, no harm 害 and no destruction 破. What remains is only the "seasonal gathering" 三會 (sān huì) 申酉戌, which in our case is incomplete, since the third branch 戌 (the Dog) is absent. This is a neutral pair with a strong shared element. Let us see what comes of it in life.

1 Two Metals: 庚 and 辛

The main stem of the Monkey is 庚 (gēng), yang Metal: raw metal, an axe, a sword, a rail. The only stem of the Rooster is 辛 (xīn), yin Metal: a piece of jewelry, a polished gem, a needle. The classics compare them like this: 庚 chops and gets reforged, 辛 is polished and shines. One is force without finish, the other is finish that fears scratches.

The main point is visible in the table: the Monkey has three "floors" (Metal, Water, Earth) and can turn different sides to the world. The Rooster has one stem, pure, clear and without admixture. The Rooster is more definite and stricter, the Monkey more mobile and many-sided. In a couple this gives a familiar picture: the Monkey improvises, the Rooster objects that this is not how it is done; the Monkey shows an option, the Rooster spots five flaws in it.

Do not be frightened by the word "objects." Often this is exactly what is needed: the Rooster has a good sense of quality, the Monkey has speed and inventiveness. Together they can make things that separately are either fast and raw or flawless and late. More on the Metal element and its temperament in the article on Metal 金.

2 The seasonal gathering 申酉戌: what "half" means

BaZi has three-branch seasonal gatherings 三會: branches that stand in a row and together "name" a season. 寅卯辰 is spring, Wood; 巳午未 is summer, Fire; 申酉戌 is autumn, Metal; 亥子丑 is winter, Water. The Monkey and the Rooster are two thirds of the autumn gathering. The Dog 戌 is missing, so the gathering is incomplete, but the pair clearly leans toward the Metal element.

What does that mean in practice? First, you share a common "climate": similar values, an interest in order, a drive to bring things to a result. Second, there is a shared load on the element: if both charts already contain a lot of Metal (庚, 辛, 申, 酉, 巳, 丑), the pair intensifies this trait, and coldness, rigidity and criticism come to the front. If both charts have little Metal, then each gets the "composure" they lack.

The key lies in full charts: Metal is not useful to everyone. For people with strong Metal it is already an excess, and they need Fire or Water. For those with little Metal, a Metal partner brings structure. This is the simplest example of why a birth-year sign is only the top layer.

3 2027: one under care, the other under pressure

2027 is 丁未 (the Fire Goat). The Monkey and the Rooster have no direct link to 未, and in the overview of the year both are among the "neutral" branches. But neutral does not mean identical. By the generating cycle Earth produces Metal (土生金), yet 未 is a special Earth: dry, summery, with Fire 丁 inside. For such a case the classics have a caveat, 燥土不生金, "parched Earth does not generate Metal." For dry clay to start feeding Metal, it needs moisture. The Monkey has its own: the branch 申 hides 壬, big Water, and also 戊, its own Earth. That is why the forecast for the Monkey reads the year as quiet support: the background is even, and leaning on structure and elders is easier than usual.

For the Rooster the picture is different. The forecast for the Rooster explains that the Rooster has a single 辛 inside, not a drop of Water, and the Goat's dry Earth remains parched clay for it. There is little support through the branch. On top of that, the year stem 丁 is Fire, and Fire melts Metal (火克金). The Rooster has to "warm up" under pressure, and the finer its Metal, the sharper the pressure.

In a couple this creates an asymmetry worth seeing in advance. At the sign level the Monkey has a smoother 2027 and the Rooster a tenser one, with more work for the same result. If the Monkey takes its ease as the norm and does not notice the partner's fatigue, resentment builds in the Rooster. The solution is simple: this year the Monkey takes on more household and organizational tasks while the Rooster copes with the load. What exactly the load is depends on the Rooster's Day Master: for 辛 the stem 丁 is Seven Killings 七殺, for 庚 it is Direct Officer 正官, and they feel different.

4 Love and marriage

In love this pair often starts with intellectual interest. The Monkey likes that the Rooster "speaks to the point" and sees details; the Rooster likes that the Monkey is quick to get going and can make people laugh. The early stages tend to be light: there are shared topics, a value placed on neatness and taste, and mutual respect.

The serious test comes when it reaches the household. The Rooster has an idea of how things should be: dishes, schedule, the order of things. The Monkey treats such matters as "default settings that can be changed." The classic conflict is born: the Rooster feels disregarded, the Monkey feels controlled. A clear division helps: the areas in which the Rooster sets the rules (kitchen, finances, schedule) and those in which the Monkey decides (entertainment, trips, informal socializing).

The good news: since there are no formal 破 or 害 links between you, sharp blows to trust are not characteristic of this pair. What happens is rather grinding against each other, which, as we know, can make both better or simply wear off the edges. Everything depends on the wish and the ability to talk. How to read a partner from the full chart is explained in marriage in BaZi.

Friendship and family

The friendship of a Monkey and a Rooster is an alliance of "taste plus idea." They like going to galleries together, choosing gadgets, arguing about books and films. The Monkey carries people along, the Rooster picks the best. If they have a common circle of interests, they can stay friends for decades without needing frequent contact.

Monkey and Rooster relatives (mother and daughter, brothers) communicate briefly: they have fast feedback, question, answer, decision. The drawback is slightly less emotion than loved ones would like. Both should remember that warmth has to be spoken, not assumed.

5 Work and business

In business a Monkey and Rooster pair looks almost like an ideal tandem: idea and quality control. The Monkey finds options, the Rooster polishes the result. The most suitable fields are those that combine creativity and precision: design, high-standard products, auditing, law, finance, jewelry, teaching, technical services.

Make sure not to "freeze" the business with the Rooster's perfectionism or to "scatter" it with the Monkey's enthusiasm. A working technique is to split the process into two stages: "options" (the Monkey decides) and "release" (the Rooster decides). Then each has their own zone of authority. On choosing business partners by charts, see who to go into business with, by BaZi.

6 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

  1. "You criticize everything." The Rooster notices flaws faster than it appreciates achievements. A rule: for every remark, one acknowledgment of what worked.
  2. "You're changing everything again." The Monkey changes plans on the fly, and the Rooster needs predictability. Agree on "frozen" zones: the weekly schedule is not touched without discussion.
  3. Coldness. Two Metals can communicate too much in business mode. Introduce a ritual of non-business time: walks, dinners without phones.
  4. Competing at being clever. You do not have to prove who is right. It is enough to state both opinions and pick one for today.
  5. Metal overload. If both charts hold a lot of Metal, add warmth and water to your life, literally: cook together, go to the water, keep living plants. This is not feng shui; it is an attempt to balance the elements at least at the everyday level.

7 The months of 2027

Months bring specific links to the pair that the year lacks. Dates are approximate, give or take a day.

8 Sep – 7 Oct己酉申酉 is part of the autumn gatheringown month, 酉酉 self-punishment
8 Oct – 6 Nov庚戌申戌 is part of the gathering酉戌害: harm
7 Dec – 5 Jan 2028壬子申子 is part of the Water trio子酉破: destruction

The most telling moment is the month 庚戌 (from 8 October): the branches of the Monkey, the Rooster and the month together make the full seasonal gathering 申酉戌, and this autumn becomes as "metallic" as it can be for the pair. At the same time 戌 is a harm for the Rooster and, for the year 未 itself, a destruction. So the month both helps and presses: ideal for finalizing affairs, not for new beginnings. February and March, by contrast, pull the pair apart: first the Monkey is struck, then the Rooster. Do not take this as a quarrel; it is alternating tension, best waited out in turns, and whoever's month it is receives more attention and indulgence.

Looking a few years ahead, the pair has two notable years. 2029 is 己酉, the Rooster's own year: the branch 酉 is among the self-punishments 自刑 (酉酉), and the Rooster tends to be stricter with itself and with the partner that year. 2030 is 庚戌: the year branch 戌 completes your seasonal gathering 申酉戌 for the whole year. There will be a great deal of Metal in the pair. For some it is a year of big shared results, for others a year when coldness and fault-finding come to the front. Which of these is yours is decided by the balance of elements in the two full charts.

8 What changes with the amount of Metal in the charts

Before drawing conclusions about the pair, look at the element balance in both charts. If you were both born in summer, or have a lot of Fire and Wood, the Metal of the Monkey and the Rooster works as a needed "supporting" element: discipline, clarity, the ability to sift out the unnecessary. If you were born in autumn and the chart already holds many 庚, 辛, 申, 酉, the shared element turns from a resource into an overload. Such couples often complain about coldness, a "dryness" in the relationship and mutual nitpicking, although separately both people are warm and pleasant.

A third variant happens too: one has an excess of Metal, the other a shortage. Then the weak Metal receives from the partner what it lacks, and the strong Metal needs someone who "takes away" the surplus, that is, Water (Metal generates Water). Here the Monkey with its hidden 壬 can be a good partner. Element balance of exactly this kind is examined among the five layers of compatibility.

Do not forget the day branches either. If one of you has the day in 辰 (the Dragon) and the other in 酉, a 辰酉合 arises, an alliance of the palaces; and if one has the day in 卯 (the Rabbit) and the other in 酉, the palaces clash: 卯酉沖. Any such match changes the picture more strongly than the year branches. That is why two "Monkey and Rooster" couples can live in opposite realities.

9 Why the birth-year sign is only the top layer

We have looked at the year branches. But every chart also has a day pillar, and in it the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ), the thing a person feels themselves to be. Two charts in which both have strong Metal, and two in which one has Metal and the other Water or Wood, are entirely different. In the latter case the elements can balance one another, and a "dry metallic pair" turns into a harmonious one.

The classical compatibility check looks at five layers: the Day Masters, the Spouse Palaces, the useful gods, the relationship stars and the Luck Pillars. These layers are described in the compatibility guide. A compatibility percentage does not exist: there is a description of structure and an honest answer about where the pair has support and where it is thin. For a Monkey and a Rooster, a shared element is a useful starting point, but not the result.

10 Frequently asked questions

Are Monkey and Rooster compatible?

There are no direct classical links between 申 and 酉: it is a neutral pair. The shared Metal element and the incomplete autumn gathering 申酉戌 give similar values, but the result depends on the full charts of both partners.

How does the Monkey's Metal differ from the Rooster's?

The Monkey's main stem is 庚, yang Metal (axe, steel); the Rooster's only stem is 辛, yin Metal (jewelry, a blade's edge). The first is faster and more flexible, the second more exact and stricter.

What does 2027 bring to a Monkey and Rooster couple?

Neither sign has a direct link to the Goat year 未. But dry Earth like 未 barely feeds Metal (燥土不生金). The Monkey is helped by its own hidden Water 壬, so the year is smoother; the Rooster has no such support, and the stem 丁 presses on its 辛 with Fire. In a couple that is an asymmetry worth taking into account.

What does the incomplete 申酉戌 gathering mean?

These are the three autumn branches that make the season of Metal. The pair holds two, and the Dog 戌 is missing. In 2027 the Dog arrives in the month 庚戌 (from 8 October) and for a time closes the gathering.

Can compatibility be determined by signs alone?

No. The birth-year sign gives the top layer. A reliable conclusion comes from comparing full charts through five structural checks. BaZi has no compatibility percentage.
