At first glance everything is in order between the Goat and the Rooster. The classical links of the branches pass this pair by: no clash 沖, no harm 害, no destruction 破, no punishment 刑. There is no harmony 合 either. The elements also look pleasant: the Earth of the Goat generates the Metal of the Rooster, a mother feeding a daughter, one more link in the seasonal cycle. If astrology were limited to the table of branches, we could stop there.

But I do not like to stop at the surface. Experience shows that "quiet" pairs most often have some fine detail that they feel without being able to name it. In the Goat and Rooster pair the detail is hidden in the stems, and taking it apart is pleasant, like taking apart a watch: at first everything looks smooth, then you see the springs.

Let me restate the frame. Everything below concerns properties of the year signs, one pillar out of four. The real life of a pair is determined by two full charts, and the last section is about checking them. If you do not yet have your own, you can build a free chart.

1 What is inside 未 and 酉

The Goat 未 (wèi) contains three stems: 己 (soft Earth), 丁 (yin Fire) and 乙 (yin Wood). It is a "warehouse" of Wood, late-summer Earth with a remnant of warmth. The Rooster 酉 (yǒu) contains one stem: 辛 (xīn, yin Metal, precious, jeweller's). Elementally that is purity: no admixtures, only Metal.

BranchHidden stemsImageTime of year
未 Goat己, 丁, 乙a garden at the end of summerroughly 7 July to 7 August
酉 Rooster辛a jewel, a sharp instrumentroughly 8 September to 7 October

Now join the stems. The 己 of the Goat generates the 辛 of the Rooster (Earth gives birth to Metal), a line of support. But 乙 and 辛 form a clash of stems, 乙辛冲 (yǐ-xīn chōng): the jewel-blade cuts the young Wood. And 丁 burns above 辛: yin Fire melts yin Metal. So inside the "quiet" pair there are two lines of pressure on the Goat or the Rooster, and one line of support.

In fairness: hidden stems work more weakly than open ones, and a clash of branches 沖 is quite another thing from a hidden clash of stems. But when the charts start to interact, these secondary links can "wake up", especially in years when the corresponding heavenly stem appears in the chart.

2 Earth generates Metal: a soft foundation

The main elemental line of the pair is generation. The Earth of the Goat feeds the Metal of the Rooster. In life it looks like care: the Goat creates the conditions in which the Rooster flourishes. A home, comfort, a calm rear, support at hard moments. The Rooster, in turn, turns this base into a result: organized affairs, polished projects, outward shine.

There is no sharp imbalance here, as there is in the pair of the Goat with the Monkey: the Rooster is not so demanding, she loves order and values care. So the generation in this pair sounds softer. The Goat likes it that her work is seen; the Rooster likes it that around her it is calm and beautiful.

The same mechanism can become a trap, however. The Rooster gets used to being cared for and starts correcting trifles: "this tablecloth doesn't fit", "why are you late again". The Goat takes the corrections as an appraisal of herself and loses confidence. The harder she tries, the more fault-finding the partner becomes, since faults are easy for her to see.

Practical marker. If after your partner's remarks you are a Goat and begin to doubt yourself rather than their rightness, the pressure of metal on your soft foundation exceeds the norm. Ask for corrections to be phrased as requests for the future ("next time let's...") rather than appraisals of the past.

3 Love and marriage: order and warmth

In a romantic relationship the Goat brings warmth, sensitivity and aesthetics. The Rooster brings clarity, care for form and an eye for detail. Together they create a pair that people around call "beautiful". Inside it is often calm as well: the Rooster dislikes loud scenes, the Goat avoids them.

The danger is suppressed dissatisfaction. Both prefer not to have it out head-on. The Goat withdraws into silence, the Rooster into irony or cold precision. Both leave traces. After a few years a quiet estrangement builds up in the pair: all the words are polite, and there is no closeness.

I suggest a simple practice. Once a week you hold an "audit evening": each names one thing that works and one that irritates. The Rooster gets a chance to say what she usually hides behind criticism, and the Goat what she usually hides behind silence. The wording begins with "I feel" and "I need".

The Spouse Palaces are read from the day branches. If the Goat has 午 in the day and the Rooster has 酉, those are signs with no direct link, but each may have other layers. And if the Goat has 丑 in the day, a clash 丑未 appears in her own palace, and the calm of the year signs ceases to be an indicator. A check on the charts is a must.

4 The scenario in which the pair flowers

The best variant for this pair looks like this. The Rooster accepts the softness of the Goat as a value and does not try to "straighten" it. The Goat accepts the precision of the Rooster as care, not as an appraisal. Both have a shared task that demands both taste and neatness: renovating a house, a garden, a trip with a well-planned route, a family business. Each sees that the partner's contribution makes the result better.

In such unions the Goat gains confidence over the years: beside her is a person who notices details and values them. The Rooster softens: beside her is a person who does not compete or attack, and the sharpness of Metal stops being a defence. Earth and Metal work as the classics intended: Earth nourishes, Metal gives form.

The worst variant should be named too. The Rooster turns into a permanent auditor, the Goat into a permanently guilty party. They walk on tiptoe, avoid honest conversation, and holidays pass politely and emptily. Usually this comes not from bad compatibility but from the absence of direct speech. And it takes the longest to cure, because both get used to it.

So when choosing what to change, begin with speech. Agree on three things. Criticism is voiced in private and to the point. Praise is spoken aloud and in company. Questions that hurt are discussed on the day they arise, not half a year later.

5 Friendship: respect and fine taste

In friendship this pair works well. The Goat and the Rooster value beauty, order, good food, comfort and culture. They love the same things: pleasant evenings, beautiful objects, attentive talk. Conflicts in friendship are rare, while respect is firm.

The Rooster can be too blunt in her appraisals, and for the soft Goat that is sometimes painful. If you are a Rooster, watch the reaction: does your friend avert her eyes, does she fall silent. If you are a Goat, do not store up resentment; say plainly what hurt. The Rooster values openness and, as a rule, knows how to apologize.

6 Work and business: quality and care for the client

In a shared venture the pair is good where quality, service and reputation matter: a studio, consulting, design, education, a shop with an author's assortment. The Rooster is responsible for numbers, standards and checking; the Goat for atmosphere, clients and the team.

Difficulties arise when push is needed: sales with cold calls, hard negotiations, a fight for a contract. Neither sign likes aggressive methods. So either hire a salesperson or build the business on recommendations and reputation, where your strong sides work.

Distribute the zones: the Rooster signs off on documents and reports, the Goat talks to clients and makes decisions about people. Record agreements in writing: the Rooster will appreciate it, the Goat will feel supported. And define beforehand how you resolve disagreements, for example "the Rooster's vote on numbers, the Goat's vote on people".

8 The pair in 2027

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, and its start falls on 立春 (lì chūn, the Beginning of Spring), around 4 February. For the Goat it is a 本命年 (běn mìng nián): the branch 未 coincides with Tai Sui, a repetition 伏吟 (fú yín). By tradition such a year asks for attentiveness: the energy of the personality meets itself, and changes are therefore felt more strongly. This is not a prediction of events but a reminder not to take sharp steps without preparation and to look after health and routine.

The Rooster 酉 has no direct link with the year branch 未; that is a neutral background. However, the year carries the heavenly stem 丁. For a Day Master of 辛 (if you know your Rooster is exactly that), 丁 appears as 七殺 (qī shā, Seven Killings), that is, outside pressure, expectations and inspections. This does not mean the year is necessarily hard. It means that with such a Day Master it is better not to overload yourself with commitments and to rest more. For other Day Masters 丁 reads by its own rules, and the answer depends on the chart.

The calendar of months adds shades. 丁未 (roughly 7 July to 7 August) is the "double Goat": year and month coincide, a peak of attention for the Goat. 己酉 (roughly 8 September to 7 October) is the Rooster's month: her clarity and her voice in the pair grow stronger. Between them lies 戊申 (roughly 8 August to 7 September), a transitional month.

It is useful to lay the year out by seasons. The spring months 壬寅 and 癸卯 (February to April) bring Wood: for the Goat this is a time when the 乙 inside her branch revives and pulls toward growth, learning and new ideas. Summer with its Fire (the months 丙午 and 丁未, June to August) warms the emotions of both and calls for care with words. Autumn with its Metal (己酉 and onward) returns confidence and clarity to the Rooster: a good time for joint matters where order and quality count. If you spread large steps across these seasons, the Goat year passes noticeably more evenly.

For the couple this means the following. In 2027 the Goat is more sensitive than usual, and the Rooster should soften her criticism: more words of support, fewer remarks. The Rooster, in turn, has in her partner a person who this year especially needs stability. If you can build a shared routine (sleep, food, joint rituals), the year passes calmly. If the Rooster keeps "correcting" the Goat and she closes up, the 本命年 sharpens the tension.

9 Why the year sign is only the top layer

A Goat by year may be the most "rooster-like" by character: exact, demanding, fond of order. Everything depends on the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ). If your Day Master is 辛, as in the typical Rooster, you live by the logic of Metal even as a Goat by year. And a Rooster by year with a Day Master of 己 will be soft Earth with all the goat-like traits.

For a reliable assessment of a pair, five layers are compared:

  1. Day Masters. Feeding, control, stem combination.
  2. Day branches. The Spouse Palace: 合, 沖, 刑, 害, 破.
  3. Elemental balance. What each gives the other of the missing.
  4. Relationship stars. Attractiveness, boundaries, solitude.
  5. Luck Pillars 大運. The coincidence of the big decades.

The result of this check is a map of the union without a compatibility percentage: where the pair has support and where the zones of attention are. The method is laid out in BaZi Compatibility: 5 Layers of the Real Method. The portraits of the signs are Goat and Rooster. And if you want to see how marriage is read for a pair at large, see Marriage in BaZi.

10 Frequently asked questions

Are the Goat and the Rooster compatible?

There are no direct classical links between 未 and 酉: it is a neutral pair. The elements are favourable: Earth generates Metal. In the hidden stems there is tension between 乙 and 辛 and the heat of 丁 over 辛, but that is a detail, not a sentence.

Why do people say it is hard for the Goat with the Rooster?

The Goat is soft and avoids conflict, the Rooster is precise and prone to criticism. If the Goat is criticized often, she closes up. With goodwill the Rooster helps her keep form and finish tasks.

What is 乙辛冲 and what does it have to do with this pair?

It is a clash of heavenly stems: 乙 (yin Wood) is hidden in 未 and 辛 (yin Metal) in 酉. A hidden clash is not the same as a clash of branches, but it explains the subtle tension that the pair feels without naming the cause.

How does 2027 go for this pair?

For the Goat it is a 本命年 with the repetition 伏吟. For the Rooster there is no direct link with the year 未, but the year stem 丁 acts for a Day Master of 辛 as 七殺, outside pressure. If your Rooster partner is exactly 辛, she should save her strength.

Can they run a business together?

They can. The Rooster is responsible for precision, numbers and quality, the Goat for clients and atmosphere. The conditions: clear roles and written agreements on money and deadlines.

Are year signs enough to assess a pair?

No. The year sign describes one pillar out of four. You need two full charts: the Day Masters, the day branches, the elemental balance, the relationship stars and the Luck Pillars.
