Open any chart of Chinese zodiac compatibility and the Goat and the Pig land in the green zone. The reason is simple: 亥 (hài, the Pig) and 未 (wèi, the Goat) belong to the Three Harmony 三合 (sān hé) 亥卯未, which the classics call the "Wood trio." The third branch of that trio is 卯 (mǎo, the Rabbit). That is why popular horoscopes always say "Goat, Rabbit and Pig are the best of friends."
Now the refinement that makes this page worth reading. When a couple holds only two branches of the three and the central one is absent, the alliance is "incomplete," and such a pair behaves differently from a full trio. The sympathy between a Goat and a Pig can be real, but you need to understand what it stands on and what it lacks. Along the way we will deal with a paradox: by branches you are allies, yet by elements the Goat's Earth "smothers" the Pig's Water.
1 The 亥卯未 trio: who is the lead
Every trio has three roles: "birth" 長生 (cháng shēng), "peak" 帝旺 (dì wàng) and "storage" 墓 (mù). In the Wood trio the Pig 亥 is the birth, the Rabbit 卯 is the peak, and the Goat 未 is the storage. The central figure is the Rabbit, the climax of the element. The Pig and the Goat are the beginning and the end of the cycle: the Pig launches, the Goat receives the result and puts it into storage.
An alliance of two branches from a trio is called 半合 (bàn hé), a half combination. The classics treat it as working when the central branch is present, as in 亥卯 or 卯未. A pair of "birth plus storage" without the center, which is exactly 亥未, is a so-called arching combination 拱合 (gǒng hé): the center is implied but absent. This is the weakest variant, and some schools do not count it at all. So a Goat and Pig pair is more a predisposition to an alliance than a ready alliance. A Rabbit in either chart (day, hour or month), or arriving from outside as a year, month or Luck Pillar, closes the trio and switches it on at full strength. More on how such combinations work in the article on the Three Harmonies.
What does this resemble in life? Two people understand each other without explanations, share tastes and direction, but need a "third" thing, such as a project, a child, a home or a shared job, for the bond to become truly durable. A couple that lives only for each other often loses momentum.
2 The paradox of elements: Earth over Water
Now the interesting part. The element of 未 is Earth, and the element of 亥 is Water. Earth controls Water (土克水): an embankment stops the river. On the surface it looks as if the Goat "commands" the Pig. In work with real charts this explanation usually turns out to be too crude.
First, the main hidden stem in 亥 is 壬 (yang Water), and the second is 甲 (yang Wood). The Pig is "big water" with a seed of Wood lying in it. Second, the Goat hides 己, 丁 and 乙: Earth, Fire and Wood. So both have Wood. That is exactly why they belong to the Wood trio: Water feeds Wood, and Earth stores it.
| Branch | Hidden stems | What it gives the couple |
|---|---|---|
| 未 Goat | 己 · 丁 · 乙 | Care, warmth, the habit of "putting things in storage": keeping, protecting, not throwing away |
| 亥 Pig | 壬 · 甲 | Scope, generosity, fluidity; the urge to grow and move |
There is also a subtlety that not everyone takes into account. Some schools look at "secret combinations" 暗合 (àn hé) through the hidden stems of two branches. The pair 亥未 is not on the short classical list of 暗合 for branches, but by stems there are two combinations here: 丁 in the Goat and 壬 in the Pig form 丁壬合 (dīng-rén hé), and 己 in the Goat and 甲 in the Pig form 甲己合 (jiǎ-jǐ hé). Both are submerged and secondary; if you count them, they say one thing: beneath the outward differences the pair has an attraction that is not always noticed. If you like the mechanics, see the article on stem combinations.
The conclusion on elements: the Goat's Earth does restrain the Water, but the way a riverbed restrains a river, that is, it directs. In the good version of the pair, the Goat gives form and the Pig gives movement. In the bad version the Goat starts to "regulate" the Pig, and the Pig retreats into its own world: no quarrel and no conversation.
3 Love and marriage: two different kinds of generosity
Goat and Pig are both generous, but the generosity differs. The Pig gives widely and at once: gifts, treats, attention, money. The Goat gives quietly and precisely: it remembers what a person actually needs and brings it. The first generosity is loud and warm, the second is quiet and long-lasting.
In a good configuration they build a real home: cooked meals, guests at the weekend, friends who drop by without calling. Goat and Pig couples are known for their coziness. But coziness has a price. They can linger too long in comfort and put off difficult conversations. The Pig dislikes sharpening things, the Goat is used to enduring, and together they can live for years with a small but chronic resentment.
What helps? A conditional "review" every half year: sit down and say what you want to change in your life, what you want to keep and what you are silent about. It sounds funny, but couples like this most often part not over quarrels but because "for a long time nothing has been right, and there was nothing to say." For how to read a partner more deeply than by sign, see marriage in BaZi.
4 Friendship and family
As friends, Goat and Pig are pleasant in every respect. The Pig knows how to gather people, the Goat knows how to hold the atmosphere. If you have seen a pair of friends who cook together, drive to the countryside together and split the bill without a word, it is often exactly this tandem. There is less rivalry than in same-element pairs and less drama than in clash pairs.
In a family bond (parent and child, brother and sister) the picture is similar with a caveat: the Goat tends to look after, and the Pig accepts being looked after too willingly. In childhood it is a warm picture; in adulthood it turns into dependence. Better to mark boundaries ahead of time: who is responsible for what, and where each decides alone.

In business the Pig is a generator of ideas and contacts, and the Goat is the "warehouse" and the executor. The ideal version: the Pig brings in clients, the Goat brings the order to a result and watches quality. This works especially well in services, food, teaching, beauty and creative professions, anywhere human warmth matters and the combination of "invite" and "guide with care" is needed.
The weak point is money and control. The Pig spends easily and lends easily, while the Goat writes everything down and remembers. The first version of the conflict is "you are too petty," the second is "you are too extravagant." A simple thing helps: divide the budget into shared and personal, and spell out honestly which sums each person spends at their own discretion. The principles of choosing a business partner by charts are covered in who to go into business with, by BaZi.
6 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them
- The Goat holds on, the Pig lets go. One saves, the other gives away. Fix: shared rules for large expenses and gifts.
- The Pig speeds up, the Goat freezes. The Pig wants change now, the Goat needs time to get used to it. Agree on a "reflection period": seven to ten days for any major decision, but no more.
- The unsaid. Both avoid open conflict. Schedule the conversation in a neutral place: on a walk it goes more gently than at the kitchen table.
- The "adult" role. The Goat sometimes takes the lead in the couple, and the Pig relaxes. After a few years both get tired of it. Swap roles on purpose: let the Pig do the planning sometimes while the Goat simply follows.
- Fatigue from long comfort. Introduce at least one shared novelty a year: a trip, a course, a renovation, a hobby.
7 The couple in 2027
2027 is the year 丁未, a Goat year. For the Goat it is ben ming nian 本命年 (běn mìng nián), "your own year," which in branch terms is 伏吟 (fú yín): the year branch repeats the person's own branch. What to do in such a year is described in the guide to 本命年 and in the forecast for the Goat. For the Pig, 2027 is something quite different: 亥 and 未 form an arching half alliance with the year itself, covered in the forecast for the Pig.
An interesting arrangement results. The Goat is tense and sensitive in its year, while the Pig, together with the year branch, assembles two branches of the Wood trio, which works "for the common cause." At the sign level the year is rather even for the Pig, though part of its personal strength goes into shared affairs. In 2027 the couple is often built so that the Pig "pulls" the Goat along: invites it to meetings, cheers it on, suggests stepping outside the usual frame. The Goat should accept this help without letting it turn into pressure, and the Pig should watch that shared affairs do not drain personal resources.
| Period (±1 day) | Month | How it touches the couple |
|---|---|---|
| 4 Feb – 5 Mar | 壬寅 | The Tiger 寅 forms 寅亥合 with the Pig and 寅亥破 at the same time; neutral for the Goat |
| 6 Mar – 4 Apr | 癸卯 | The Rabbit 卯 closes the 亥卯未 trio together with the year: the best period for joint projects |
| 6 Jun – 6 Jul | 丙午 | 午未 is a harmony for the Goat; a warm month, convenient for planning trips |
| 7 Jul – 7 Aug | 丁未 | The month duplicates the year pillar: a double "own" period for the Goat; the Pig gets 亥未 in the month |
| 8 Aug – 7 Sep | 戊申 | The Monkey 申 harms the Pig (申亥害): a spat over small things is possible |
| 7 Nov – 6 Dec | 辛亥 | The Pig's month: the Pig is in its own month and forms 亥未 with the year |
| 7 Dec – 5 Jan 2028 | 壬子 | The Rat harms the Goat (子未害): the Goat should protect its nerves |
| 6 Jan – 3 Feb 2028 | 癸丑 | The Ox clashes with the Goat (丑未沖): an anxious month, better without big decisions |
The most favorable window is March and early April, when the month branch 卯 completes the trio: by the classics, in such periods the bond of the pair feels stronger and joint undertakings go more easily. The most sensitive is the end of the year: the Goat has to live through the "harm" of the Rat and the "clash" of the Ox in a row. If you and your partner are planning a wedding, a move or a child, it makes sense to consult the individual charts and not fit the event to a single month.
8 Assembling the third figure when there is no Rabbit
A pair without 卯 is not doomed; it simply lives without an "amplifier." Practitioners usually suggest three things. First, look in each chart for a Rabbit off to the side: in the hour of birth, in the month, in a Luck Pillar 大運 (dà yùn). A person can be born in a Goat year and carry a Rabbit in the hour, which means their own chart already holds a closed trio. Second, remember that 卯 also arrives temporarily: in Rabbit years (2023 was 癸卯; the next is 乙卯 in 2035) and in every 卯 month (in 2027, 6 March to 4 April). In such periods the bond of the pair revives without any effort.
Third, you can create a "third figure" in the everyday sense. The classics do not claim, of course, that a child or a shared project replaces a branch, but practitioners notice that Goat and Pig couples are noticeably sturdier when they have something that unites them outwardly: a home, a business, a pet, a circle of friends. There is no magic here, only the organization of life. The Pig needs scope, the Goat needs to care for someone; a shared object of attention covers both needs.
For 2027 a practical plan looks like this. Until early March, settle into shared plans calmly and decide nothing "in the heat of the moment." In March and April, launch what you have long postponed: a move, joint work, studying. In summer, keep things steady, especially for the Goat in its own month 丁未 (7 July to 7 August). In autumn, be careful with small things: the month 戊申 brings a light harm for the Pig, and in December and January it is better not to hurry with fateful conversations.
9 Why the birth-year sign settles nothing finally
Everything above concerns the year branches. They give an outline, not a portrait. People with the very same "Goat and Pig" pair can have entirely different relationships: in one couple the day branches are in harmony, in another they clash. One person's Day Master may be weak and the other's strong, and that changes the whole dynamic.
The classical order is five checks: the Day Masters 日主 (rì zhǔ), the Spouse Palaces (the day branches), the useful gods, the relationship stars and the sync of Luck Pillars. They are described in detail in the compatibility guide. If your two charts pass most of the checks, even a weak link between the year branches will spoil nothing. If they do not, a beautiful 亥卯未 alliance will not save the relationship from difficulty. There is no single "percentage," only structure.

Are Goat and Pig an ideal pair?
There are no ideal pairs. The branches 亥 and 未 belong to the 亥卯未 trio, which is a good structural plus, but without the central branch 卯 (the Rabbit) the alliance is incomplete. The final conclusion comes from comparing full charts.
Why do the elements of Goat and Pig conflict while the branches are allied?
The Earth of 未 restrains the Water of 亥 by element, but both branches hide Wood (乙 in the Goat, 甲 in the Pig). At the branch level they are united by the Wood trio. In practice the Goat directs the Pig more than it suppresses it.
How will a Goat and Pig couple get through 2027?
2027 is the Goat year 丁未. For the Goat it is a "home" year, 本命年; for the Pig the year forms the half alliance 亥未. The best time for the couple is the month 癸卯 (6 March to 4 April); the end of the year is tenser, with the months 壬子 and 癸丑.
Do they suit business together?
Yes, especially in services, food, teaching and creative work. The Pig brings contacts and ideas, the Goat takes charge of quality and order. Agree in advance on the budget and on who has the last word on key questions.
