Of all the pairings the Dragon can make with other signs, the one with the Rooster looks the most "official": the branches 辰 (chén) and 酉 (yǒu) form the Six Harmony 辰酉合 (chén yǒu hé), one of the six liù hé 六合 pairs, the warmest links between branches. In readings of the signs such pairs are usually called "ideal." In BaZi practice the word "ideal" is treated more carefully: a 合 combination is a structure with conditions, a price and vulnerable points. Without understanding those conditions, a beautiful name easily turns into an inflated expectation.

Below we go through what binds the Dragon and the Rooster at the level of elements and hidden stems, how the combination shows up in love, friendship and work, what can break it (and these, alas, are quite specific branches), and how 2027 unfolds, a Fire Goat year tied to neither of the two signs. As in all our pair readings, we are talking about birth-year signs; the real picture is determined by the full charts.

1 What 六合 is and why it is not a guarantee

The classics list six combinations: 子丑, 寅亥, 卯戌, 辰酉, 巳申, 午未. Each is a "handshake" of two branches standing symmetrically about the axis of the cycle. In a 合 the branches are considered to be drawn to each other and to soften each other's sharpness. 辰酉 is a union of Earth and Metal and in theory transforms into Metal (化金, huà jīn, "transformation into Metal").

But in real charts the transformation happens rarely. More often one sees 合而不化 (hé ér bù huà): the branches are "bound" but have not changed their nature. This state is also called 合絆 (hé bàn, "binding by combination"): the branches are tied to each other and distracted from other tasks. In life it looks like this: a pair drawn to each other finds it easy and pleasant to be together, but the link can be "tying," and it is hard for the people to part even if the relationship is due for review.

Another shade: a 合 is easy to disturb. If a third branch clashes with one of the branches of the combination, the combination weakens or "dissolves." For the Dragon that branch is the Dog 戌 (辰戌沖); for the Rooster it is the Rabbit 卯 (卯酉沖) and also the Dog 戌 (酉戌害, a harm). That is why in the charts of such pairs it is worth looking for 戌 and 卯: they can "break" the combination even though it exists at the level of birth-year signs. We wrote about the structure of the six combinations in general in a separate article on Six Harmony 六合.

2 Earth gives birth to Metal: the elemental scheme of the pair

The Dragon 辰 is Yang Earth, the Water storehouse. The Rooster 酉 is pure Yin Metal, the branch of autumn, an autumn shard of metal: scissors, a piece of jewelry, a fine knife. In the Five Elements Earth produces Metal, meaning the Dragon feeds the Rooster. This is one of the gentlest elemental schemes: "material" (Earth) turns into "product" (Metal).

The hidden stems confirm the picture. The Rooster has only one stem, 辛 (xīn, Yin Metal), a "pure" branch without admixtures. The Dragon has three: 戊 (Yang Earth), 乙 (Yin Wood), 癸 (Yin Water). The Earth 戊 directly produces 辛, which means the Dragon's main stem literally feeds the Rooster's only stem.

BranchHidden stemsHow it feels in the pair
辰 Dragon戊 Yang Earth · 乙 Yin Wood · 癸 Yin WaterMany layers, reserves, strategy, hidden depth
酉 Rooster辛 Yin MetalClarity, precision, exacting attention to form and order

The difference in "makeup" reads easily: the Dragon is a vessel of many themes, the Rooster is a single line drawn clearly. Next to the Dragon, the Rooster finds it easier to see the big picture, and next to the Rooster, the Dragon finds it easier to bring ideas to precise wording. This is what mutual respect, which we often see in such pairs, rests on.

3 Love and marriage: order and warmth

In relationships the Dragon and the Rooster usually build the union thoroughly. The Rooster brings care for detail: the house is in order, plans are written down, dates are not forgotten. The Dragon brings scope: ideas, resources, readiness to make decisions. Many couples of this type say that they are comfortable in daily life and that they are "of one blood" in matters of values and propriety.

The most frequent difficulties are connected with criticism. The Rooster tends to notice shortcomings and voice them, often from the best of motives. The Dragon reacts in his own way: he is silent and accumulates. After a time a situation arises in which one "corrects" the other and the other "stockpiles" grievances. It is cured by the ability to split remarks into two categories: "requests," which can be fulfilled, and "evaluations," which nobody needs. Voice the request, keep the evaluation to yourself.

Another warning is connected with the combination itself. When branches are "bound," a couple can go for years without deciding on either a break or a new stage, because "it's fine as it is." If you notice that the relationship is standing still, discuss it aloud. For how to read a partner more broadly than by birth-year sign, see the article Marriage in BaZi.

4 Friendship and social circle

Friendship between the Dragon and the Rooster is, as a rule, dependable and without showy drama. They pair well in the roles of "strategist and executor": the Dragon dreams up, the Rooster organizes. Shared interests usually involve work, study, running a household or organizing events. The minus is the same as in love: the Rooster often makes remarks, and the Dragon may take offense and say nothing. In friendship this is not terrible as long as both can say in time, "let me explain what I meant."

This friendship also has a pleasant property that follows from the union of branches: the Dragon and the Rooster rarely compete. The Rooster does not need the Dragon's scale, and the Dragon is not interested in the Rooster's thoroughness, so each calmly acknowledges the other's strong side and does not measure themselves against it. In practice this makes them convenient partners in any joint task where one must both devise and finish cleanly: from a home renovation to launching a small project. The main thing is that the Rooster does not turn advice into a stream of corrections, and the Dragon does not vanish in silence when the order feels cramping.

5 Work and business: system and scope

In a business setting 辰酉 lives up to the name of the combination. The Dragon sees the prospect, finds resources and people, and the Rooster builds the processes and answers for quality and deadlines. If roles are distributed correctly, such a link can grow an organization calmly and without emergencies. It is convenient to assign control and order to the Rooster, and strategic questions to the Dragon.

The risks: the Rooster is prone to pedantry, and the Dragon may feel that his strategy is being "squeezed into a frame." In turn, the Dragon sometimes changes course on the fly, and the Rooster takes that for chaos. It is useful to agree on a procedure in advance: decisions on a change of course are made at a scheduled meeting, not in passing. More on business compatibility is in the article who to do business with according to BaZi.

6 What can shake the combination: the Dog and the Rabbit

A "safety list" deserves a section of its own. Three branches weaken or break 辰酉合, and it is useful to know them by sight:

BranchWhy it is dangerousWhere it shows
戌 DogClashes with the Dragon (辰戌沖) and harms the Rooster (酉戌害): strikes the combination from both sidesIn charts, and in 戌 months and years
卯 RabbitClashes with the Rooster (卯酉沖) and harms the Dragon (卯辰害)In charts, and in 卯 months and years
丑 OxDestroys the Dragon (辰丑破), and forms a half combination 酉丑 (Metal) with the Rooster that "draws away" the RoosterLess often; in charts and 丑 months

This does not mean that a pair is doomed if a Dog is present in a chart. A clash and a combination interact in a complicated way: sometimes 戌 even "opens" locked resources. But as a warning the list is useful: if you have 戌 or 卯 in your charts, do not lean on the beautiful name of the combination.

7 Home, children, money: how the combination looks in daily life

So that the combination does not remain an abstraction, let us look at three everyday zones. Home: the Rooster wants order and a schedule, the Dragon tolerates order as long as it does not interfere with freedom of movement. A convenient formula: the Rooster's rules in shared rooms, the Dragon's rules in personal zones. Money: the Dragon saves with an eye to something large, the Rooster keeps small accounts and likes to see the numbers. Let the Rooster keep the spreadsheet and the Dragon make decisions about large expenses on the basis of it. That way both get what they need.

Children and upbringing: here the combination shows most vividly. The Rooster sets the frame and demands tidiness, the Dragon supports ambition and inspires. For a child it is a good combination if the parents do not diverge on the essentials. If they do, the child quickly learns to play on the difference: to go for permission to whoever is softer. Set a rule: decisions about the children are made together and announced together.

A separate word on the partners' families. The Rooster is sensitive to how relatives treat her, while the Dragon tends not to notice small slights and may therefore be inattentive. A simple practice helps here: one partner is always the "interpreter" between the other and the relatives, and the role is taken in turns in different situations. Then small rough edges do not turn into family stories that last for decades.

9 Dragon plus Rooster in 2027

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng wèi), the Fire Goat, beginning at 立春 (lì chūn) around February 4. Neither the Dragon nor the Rooster forms a direct link with the yearly branch 未: no combination, no clash, no punishment. The yearly stem 丁 is Yin Fire. In the Five Elements Fire produces Earth (the Dragon), and Earth produces Metal (the Rooster); Fire, however, also controls Metal. In other words, the yearly background supports the Dragon and presses slightly on the Rooster's Metal. This is a general tendency, not a forecast of events; the degree depends on the elemental balance of the charts.

The calendar by month, boundaries approximate (give or take a day):

MonthDates in 2027Dragon 辰Rooster 酉
卯 (癸卯)March 6 – April 4害 卯辰 (harm)沖 卯酉 (clash): pressure on the combination
辰 (甲辰)April 5 – May 5Its own monthThe 辰酉 combination "comes alive"
巳 (乙巳)May 6 – June 5No linkHalf of the 巳酉 combination (Metal)
酉 (己酉)September 8 – October 7六合 辰酉: activeIts own month, self-punishment 酉酉
戌 (庚戌)October 8 – November 6沖 辰戌 (clash)害 酉戌 (harm): the combination under pressure from both sides
子 (壬子)December 7, 2027 – January 5, 2028Half of the 子辰 combination (Water)破 子酉 (destruction)
丑 (癸丑)January 6 – February 3, 2028破 辰丑 (destruction)Half of the 酉丑 combination (Metal)

The table reads like this. In spring (the 卯 month) the combination is tested for strength, in the 辰 and 酉 months it comes alive, and in 戌 it takes its strongest blow: both partners feel pressure at the same time. Decide in advance how you will behave in October and November, and do not start painful conversations in that window if they can be moved to September, when the combination is on the rise. Yearly overviews for each sign: the Dragon in 2027, the Rooster in 2027.

10 Why the birth year is only the top layer

The 辰酉 combination, by birth-year signs, touches only one position of each chart. The true "marriage" branch is the day branch, the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng). If your day pillars lie in other branches, the palaces are connected in their own way, and the Dragon and the Rooster at the level of the year will be a pleasant addition but not the center. If 辰 and 酉 stand on the day pillars or next to them, you get that very "strong combination" which popular horoscopes write about, and still with the conditions from the section above.

A correct check takes five steps: the Day Masters, the Spouse Palaces, the elemental balance and useful gods, the relationship stars, the synchrony of the Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). They are described in the compatibility guide, and the comparison of the birth-year signs, the Dragon and the Rooster, remains only a first approximation. A single figure of "compatibility percentage" does not exist: after the calculation you receive a description of the strong and weak places of your pair.

11 Frequently asked questions

Are the Dragon and the Rooster an ideal pair in BaZi?

They have a classical combination, 辰酉合, but the word "ideal" is inexact. The combination does not always transform the branches and can be disturbed by the Dog 戌 or the Rabbit 卯 in charts and time cycles. The real picture is shown by the full charts.

What is 合而不化 in a couple?

It is a state in which the branches are bound by a combination but do not turn into a shared element. In life the pair is drawn together but may settle into the familiar and postpone change.

Who feeds whom by the elements?

The Dragon's Earth produces the Rooster's Metal. The Dragon acts as the resource and the Rooster as the shaper. This is a general scheme, not a law.

How does 2027 shape up for them?

Neither the Dragon nor the Rooster has a direct link with the yearly branch 未. The combination is tested in the 卯 month (March 6 – April 4) and the 戌 month (October 8 – November 6) and comes alive in 辰 and 酉.

What matters more than the birth-year sign?

The Day Master 日主 and the day branch (the Spouse Palace). Comparing them gives real compatibility; the birth-year sign only completes the picture.
